Lights, Camera, Service! DCON Weekend has arrived!
This weekend, the District Board has put together a
phenomenal convention filled with enlightening speakers, delicious food, and informative workshops, but the major component is the election of the new
District Board, who will guide us into the future and into the upcoming service year. During the convention,
candidates will spend their time campaigning, caucusing, and debating, followed by voting of the
NJCKI members. If you are interested in running for an executive board
position, such as Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, or Lt. Governor, you should review the Election Packet. It isn’t too late to run either, because you can
run off the floor just like a lot of our current board members did this past year! You just need to be a
dues-paid member from a New Jersey Circle K club and not an elected international or Club Officer Position holder in the same respective CKI year! For more
information concerning positions, look on page ____ or refer to the CKI website.
District Convention 2016 The time is finally here! From March 11-‐13th,
the District board will be hosting its annual District Convention at the Edison Hotel and Conference Center at Raritan Center. Come join us and walk the red carpet of service as we celebrate the end of a great service year and the start of a new one! We are glad that so many people have signed up and are looking forward to all the great times ahead!
If you have any questions, please feel free to email District Governor Rocky Trifari at [email protected] or Convention and Conference Committee Chair Nehali Thakkar at [email protected].
Spring Break? No Problem, we got the service for you!
During Spring Break, it gets a little boring being stuck at home watching Netflix for 10+ hours, so here are some fun ideas for you to keep busy (and rack up those service hours)! • Animal Shelters – Your local ASPCA or Humane Society is a
good place to go if you don’t mind doing some dirty work while getting rewarded by animal kisses. Most will take one-time volunteers, provided you sign a waiver.
• Helping out a neighbor – If you know that you have an elderly or disabled neighbor, family member, or friend, spring is definitely a good time to lend a hand, especially with spring cleaning getting started!
• Food Kitchens – Soup kitchens are always looking for people to lend a hand, whether its preparing food to dishing it out on people’s plates.
• Donating clothing – Get going on Spring-cleaning and clean out your closet. Donate all of those old clothes that are just sitting in your closet or the ones you cant fit in any more to a person in need!
• Cleaning up the community – This might not be happening in your community, but many have “Clean Up Days” where they ask for volunteers to come help clean up the local park, beach, or community garden. This is a great way to get involved in your community, getting to know the locals and helping to make the world a cleaner place!
A Word from our
Garden LTG Rachael
Hello New Jersey District! My name is Rachael Stieg, and I am your Garden LTG. Each year, a team of extremely dedicated Stockton University students and staff and myself host Relay for Life. Relay is an overnight walk that raises funds for the American Cancer Society. Since it’s founding in 2013, Stockton University has raised over $76,000. The funds we raise benefit a variety of programs including, but not limited to: cancer research grants, transportation services for chemotherapy sessions, the “Look Good, Feel Better” program meant to empower women, and the “Hope Lodge.” There are “Hope Lodge” locations across the country and in Puerto Rico, and they are temporary living arrangements for patients to reside free-of-charge while they receive life-saving chemotherapy treatments. Cancer has touched many lives, including my own. I relay in honor of my niece Evelyn. Evelyn is eight years old, and loves singing and cheerleading. She is in second grade this year, and will live a long and healthy life thanks to the extensive time and funding the American Cancer Society has put into blood cancer research. I also relay in memory of my uncle, Richard Norris, who was given an additional ten years with his family and friends through alternative treatments that were a direct result of cancer research grants. Relay for Life is unique in that it celebrates the lives of cancer survivors while also remembering those we have lost to cancer.
Stockton Relay for Life is a high-energy event that incorporates a variety of programs and activities. We start the night with a survivor dinner and an opening lap led by our survivors and their caregivers. We continue on to the Luminaire Ceremony later in the night, which remembers those we have lost. Stockton Relay for Life also incorporates various themed laps throughout the night as well, such as ZUMBA, a talent show, laser tag, and wake up yoga. Stockton Relay for Life will take place Friday, April 22nd, at 6 P.M. and will continue until 6 A.M. on Saturday, April 23rd. It will be hosted in our Sports Center, Big Blue, at 101 Vera King Farris Drive, Galloway NJ 08205. Registration is $10, which can be paid at the door. All cancer survivors may register free-of-charge. Your registration fee includes a Relay for Life t-shirt, and both dinner and breakfast will be provided. Participants may leave at any point during the night, so if you would like to support Stockton RFL, but are not a night owl, no worries! You can sign up to be a member of Stockton Circle K’s team at: http://relay.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLCY16EA?fr_id=72891&pg=entry Thank you for your support and I hope that you join me in finding a cure! Sincerely, Rachael Stieg Garden Lt. Governor
Governor’s Corner
Hello New Jersey District!
As many of you know, District Convention is right around the corner. In fact, it is tomorrow! I hope to see many of you there. At our 52nd district convention, there will be many opportunities to meet fellow Circle K members from around the district while walking down the red carpet of service. Through workshops, service projects, and general sessions, members will learn more about the organization and discover what it means to be a servant leader. I hope you are all as excited as I am. After celebrating the end of a great year of service, we will elect the next district board who will then lead New Jersey Circle K over the next 12 months. I trust that this convention will be one to remember.
I can't thank you all enough for providing me with the opportunity to serve as your District Governor for the 2015-2016 service year. It has been an honor to serve you. I hope those of you reading this will consider running for future leadership positions in Circle K and beyond while continuing to make a difference by serving your communities. Yours in Caring and Service, Rocky Trifari
A Letter From the Editor
Hello and Goodbye! This weekend, at the New Jersey District Convention of 2016, my term ends as Circle K
International’s New Jersey District Editor and I will move on to Stockton Circle K’s Club Secretary. I would like to
personally thank all of you for your contributions to this newsletter, for reading each issue, and for entrusting this marvelous position to me. I really enjoyed reading about all of the great events happening in our beautiful District and am looking forward to seeing all of the great things to come. With so many great minds working together, it does not
surprise me to see so many different ideas coming into play! Last year, I made it a point that I wanted people to express him or herself freely without the fear of judgment, and I feel like, together, we have spoke our minds and expressed
ourselves in more ways than one. Over the past year, I have seen so many people flourish and spread their ideas. I am so excited for the coming weekend where I, with the rest of the District Board, will be able to host a fun-‐filled weekend where you, the New Jersey District, will elect new Board members to lead you into the future. Thanks for this great opportunity and I am excite to see how the new successors will implement new, interesting, and innovative ideas in the
2016-‐2017 service year! Love, Jamie

Kiwanian Spotlight:
Ron Weber Ron Weber was inspired to join Jersey City Kiwanis in
1985 after his grandfather was a devoted Kiwanis member, and we are so glad that he joined and is still involved today! He, himself, became a devoted Kiwanis member when he took on multiple leadership responsibilities including Jersey City Club President from 1988-1989, Distinguished Lt. Governor for four consecutive terms, Zone Advisor for Circle K International, New Jersey Circle K Administrator for twelve years, and even Distinguished Club Secretary and Club Treasurer.
Ron has also received many awards over the last few years including the “Kiwanian of the Year” in 1994, “Hixon Fellow Award,” “Carrington Swain Award,” and the “Tablet of Honor” in 2006. Ron expresses his devotion by attending numerous Kiwanis International Conventions, twelve Circle K International Conventions, over twenty Circle K District Conventions, and numerous Insight and other NJ Circle K functions.
I, personally, am very honored to have met such a caring and devoted person. He enlightened me at my first Insight as to the true meaning of Kiwanis and Circle K, and that is helping others to make this world a better place. With every service I do, I hope to make a difference like Ron has in so many people’s eyes.
Kiwanian Spotlight:
Ron Weber One person who is especially grateful for having Ron in
his life was his son, Shawn Lukac. Ron became the stepfather to Shawn in 1984, and he made sure to include his stepson in the many projects and activities held by the Jersey City Kiwanis Club. Shawn soon became an active member of the Kean College Circle K Club. After college, Ron encouraged Shawn to join the chartering membership of the Kiwanis club of Old Bridge, where he has been a member for thirteen years. Through Kiwanis, Shawn has met his beautiful wife, and together they have three amazing children. Thanks to Ron’s Grandfather, Ron decided to join Kiwanis to give back to his community, and in doing so; he has touched the lives of so many people through the years! It just goes back to the old saying… “One Man Can Make a Difference!” Shawn recently shared with me, saying “I speak on behalf of myself and numerous others when I say how grateful I am to have known Ron and been a part of his life.”
