It'S been learned that a very famous aerialstar of the 40's is confined to an easternsanitarium. This great star dropped out of

CLYDE BEATTY-COLE BROS. hv BILLY BARTON

In the title race for the "largest tented circusin America". Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros, is imquestionably a first-class front runner Thegreat white big top (150x300) brand newsprawled in l azy nobility under a bright sunon the grassy hagerstown (Md.) fairgrounds.(May 15) waiting placidly for the (wo packedhouses being assured by the Emrnett Kelly CFAmembers who. each year, sponsor and playhost to this "Empress" of the circus empire

The Empress seemed to stare down from herimperial peaks at the broad midway stretchingfrom her marquee, disdainfully perhaps at theupstart side show top - a 50 with three 30'salso white, also new: more benignly at themounted Hippo show, the "grease-joint"semi, the mounted Monkey show: at t in- officewagon and pony ride. Do we fancy a contentedsigh at the long lines of paying customers asthey que up at the ticket wagon fronting themidway9 Perhaps. But there the people wereand. as Dave Hoover and others commented"The CFA does a hell of a job for the show

here each year."

The Beatty-Cole Circus is a well-framed op-eration that looks and is smoothly professionalwithout sacrificing its primary function - that

of being a tented community of family entertain-ment. In other words, for all its mechanizedeff iciency, the show wears a warm, welcomingface.

Inside the Big Top. equipment is well kept andpainted. Seven steel seat wagons, and six largesections of chairs provide adequate seating. The old-fashioned chandeliers have been re-placed by banks of lights, spotting ring andtrack, mounted between quarter poles.

Complaints that last season's program wasscimpy won't be echoed this year. If anything, the show is overlong causing droves of patronsto "walk" during the last 15 minutes therebycutting into the side show's earning potential. For that reason alone time should be prunedfrom the performance.

The program gels off like a racehorse, gallopsin momentum until those last 15 minutes whenit slows to a crawl - all due to an unpardon-able delay in setting the flying act net whichcould be and should be set while the aerialmotorcycle is on. During this act. ring three -where the flying act is hung - is free. As itnow stands the aerial motorcycle follows thebulls, goes next to a perch display (too late in

the show) iind is followed by a long clown'crazy'numbet that cannot possibly lake up the slackwhile the net is being set. By this time thehouse is half gone which a judicious rearrang-ing of acts would rectify.

There are so many GOOD aspects to the per-formance i t is d i f f icu l t in a limited space to dojustice to all without slighting some. but...Ethel Joyce's Greyhounds is a standout. A proto her tot", Ethel center-rings with youthfulzest and winning personally. The final highhurdle leaps by the canines reap well-deservedohs and ahs.

Dave Hoover enters the steel arena like a latierday Clyde Bealty. dressed in white, brandishingwhip and chair, and gives the American pub-lic the sort of cage act they expect - lots oflion-fighting-chair. whip cracking, gun-pop-ping rough and tumble action. It's a fast actand. when that final lion emerging from thechute leaps across the arena to attack Daveand chair, the audience is brought up intheir seats.

Two teeierboard troupes. 7 people each, theSantiago and Canistrelli iroupes. further en-hance the program's speed. The Canistrelli'sappear earlier as the Ricardos with the first'troupe' tight wire act seen in many years.

Ken Dodd's Clown Alley (7). get strong laughsin numbers that are inventive and new. Thealley includes Dennis Stevens. Jimmy James

Jim sun/.. B i l l Smith. Louis N a p . Mike Fern eraand Dodd himself. The 'acupuncture' number isespecially clever.

A Bicentennial Aerial Ballet has 12 girls onrotating ladders spotted around the track, invivid costumes, working in perfect synchroniz-aiion. Center-featured is the iron jaw aerialjuggling of Ron and Mi tz i e Gi 11.

No Ziegfeld Girl ever made a more stunningentrance than does Miss Gill decked out inlavish red. white and blue willow umbrellaplumes that virtually sweep and f i l l the ring. The team's iron jaw juggling routines from a

jeweled chandelier are worthy of the star bill-ing they receive.

Fred Logan oversees three rings of bulls, three large ones in each end ring, three babiesin the center which he and his wife work with
