It is through your effort, along with that of so many others across our great state, that I have been able to represent South Dakota in the U.S . Senate. Once again, I am in need of your assistance. Will you be so kind as to help me circulate petitions for the Republican nomination for U.S . Senate this year? State law requires me to obtain the signatures of 1,955 registered Republican voters in South Dakota and file the petitions with the Secretary of State. I would sincerely appreciate your help in gathering at least 40 signatures on the enclosed petitions. If you would be able to gather more signatures, we would be glad to send you addit ional petitions. We ask that you please mail these back to us using the enclosed return envelope by February 1•t so we can send an early signal of strength and so we can ensure that we have gathered enough qualified signatures. The Republican-led Senate has had some important achievements over the last year but there is obviously still much work to be done. I be lieve the 2016 election could very well be the most i mportant election of our lifet ime. Your involvement in the process will be critical to our success up and down the ticket. To that end, you will likely be receiving a similar packet from Representative Noem soon. Please consider circulating both of our petitions simultaneously. Finally, I' ve enclosed a guideline document that should answer some of the frequently asked questions about circulating a petition. A member of my staff will be following up with you to confirm your willingness to help and answer any additional questions you may have. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact my campaign office at {605} 221-1010. Kimberley and I are grateful for your encouragement and support. John Thune U.S . Dear Friend,

I am so very thankful for the help and counsel you have provided over the years. It is through your effort, along with that of so many others across our great state, that I have been able to represent South Dakota in the U.S. Senate. Once again, I am in need of your assistance. Will you be so kind as to help me circulate petitions for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate this year?

State law requires me to obtain the signatures of 1,955 registered Republican voters in South Dakota and file the petitions with the Secretary of State. I would sincerely appreciate your help in gathering at least 40 signatures on the enclosed petitions. If you would be able to gather more signatures, we would be glad to send you additional petitions. We ask that you please mail these back to us using the enclosed return envelope by February 1•t so we can send an early signal of strength and so we can ensure that we have gathered enough qualified signatures.

The Republican-led Senate has had some important achievements over the last year but there is obviously still much work to be done . I be lieve the 2016 election could very well be the most important election of our lifetime. Your involvement in the process will be critical to our success up and down the ticket. To that end, you will likely be receiving a similar packet from Representative Noem soon. Please consider circulating both of our petitions simultaneously.

Finally, I' ve enclosed a guideline document that should answer some of the frequently asked questions about circulating a petition . A member of my staff will be following up with you to confirm your willingness to help and answer any additional questions you may have. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact my campaign office at {605} 221-1010. Kimberley and I are grateful for your encouragement and support.

Frequently Asked Questions for Petition Circulators

Who Can Circulate A Petition? A petition circulator must be a resident of the State of South Dakota who is at least 18 years of age.

How Do I Get Signatures? Find registered Republican voters from the State of South Dakota and ask them to sign the petition. As circulator, you must personally witness each signature on the petition being circulated. The quickest way to gather signatures is to just keep the sheet with you and ask your friends, family, and neighbors you see throughout your day. It will be filled in no time.

Do All The Boxes Need To Be Filled In? Yes. All the boxes must be filled in. Signers must sign their names as they are registered to vote or as they usually sign their names. The signer's legibly printed name must also appear. Each signature line must show a complete residence address. This can be street and house number or rural route and box number in addition to the city or town. Zip codes are optional. Each signature line must show the month and day it was signed. Numbers to designate the month are permissible. Abbreviations commonly used are also acceptable. Ditto marks may not be used.

Of course only the signer can sign their own name, but as you may be aware, the petition circulator can fill in the date, address, county of registration, and printed name (if the signer leaves these boxes blank).

Can A Signer List A PO Box As Their Address? If the signer is a resident of a smaller town, a post office box number may be used in lieu of a street address. PO Boxes are fine unless the signer is from: Aberdeen, Belle Fourche, Box Elder, Brandon, Brookings, Huron, Madison, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish, Sturgis, Vermillion, Watertown or Yankton.

I'm Done, Now What? If you filled all 40 entries or if you haven't and don't think you will be able to get more signatures, please send in what you have. Fill out the back of the sheet with the circulator's rinted name, address, city, state and then isign in the presence ofa South Dakota notary public. Mail the completed petitions back to:

I Need More Petition Sheets, Where Do I Get Them? Call our team at 605-221-1010 or email [email protected] and we'll get you more right away. Please don't make your own photocopies, as there are rules about how to correctly do so.

What's Your Deadline? Please return all petitions by February 1, 2016. We want a strong show of force well ahead of the state's deadline. Thanks for your help!
