Introduction to the Cayce Readings onHealth and Healing

No matter what illness or ailment concerns us, certain basic principles about health and healing are relevant. These are the premises upon which all of the Cayce health information rests. For those who would like to make a more careful study of these basic principles, the recommended Circulating File is entitled “Principles of Healing.” Here, in essence, are the ideas found in that file. They may prove to be very useful to your more in-depth study of the specific ailment that requires healing for you.

The first fundamental idea about healing requires that we maintain a creative balance between two principles:

1. All healing comes from the infinite - that is, from attunement and harmony with our spiritual source. The infinite is just as accessible and available in the visible, physical world as it is in the invisible realm.

2. At the same time, each person must take responsibility for his or her own healing process. No one can simply sit back and wait passively for healing to occur.

This second principle - the need for self-responsibility - can take many forms. For example, healing requires attunement, and no one knows better than ourselves exactly what has gotten us out of attunement in the past. Often, if we'll look closely at our lives, we can see (without needing a gifted medical clairvoyant such as Edgar Cayce) what's causing our illness.

To illustrate self-responsibility further, the human body has a marvelous, innate drive to heal itself, but we've got to do our part to help. A broken bone will naturally try to mend; however, the fracture needs to be set properly for the healing to be complete and effective.

Another important principle relates to energy medicine, a new field for which Edgar Cayce was a pioneer. His readings consistently speak of the roles played by vibrations or vibratory forces - right down to the level of individual atoms. According to Cayce, there is a type of consciousness that exists in each atom. Although most of the passages about the atomic physics of healing seem rather esoteric, it might be easier to follow the analogy of the attunement of a stringed musical instrument. A violin or piano that is out of tune makes sour, discordant music - symbolic of disease or illness. Just as a skilled musician can bring the instrument back into attunement, we experience healing when our vibrations - right down to the atomic level - are adjusted in a correct manner. In essence, all healing is the changing of vibrations from within.

Balance among body, mind, and spirit is another key to Cayce's philosophy of healing. For healing to be complete and lasting, we must recognize and meet the needs of each of these three levels. Virtually no illness or disease can be treated successfully at only one of these three levels.

What's more, Cayce affirms that the human body will naturally stay healthy - and even rejuvenate itself - if a kind of internal balance can be maintained. “Dis-ease” starts when one part of the body draws energy from another part. One portion of an organism may become overcharged with the creative life force, while another portion becomes

undernourished. The result is a gradual disintegration of the body and the onset of illness.

The opposite of this sort of disintegration is rejuvenation. The readings assert that we are continuously rebuilding our bodies. Within any seven-year period, each cell is replaced. If we'll allow it, our bodies will transform any problem and resuscitate any condition. But our ingrained habits usually block this healing potential - the habits of action and, even more potent, the habits of mind.

What role do drugs and medicine play in the healing process? Cayce's philosophy clearly sees a place for them, but warns of misunderstanding how they work and of expecting more of them than is possible. Any healing method attempts to create an experience of oneness, in hopes of then stimulating a similar response in the body. For some people in some situations, a drug may be the best way to accomplish this - just as in other cases, surgery may be the best way to stimulate healing. Medicines can be a practical application of the one life force. Occasionally they must be very potent in their reactions in order to get the patient through an acute illness. But Cayce from time to time encouraged people to consider the herbal formulas he recommended to be tonics and stimulants, rather than medicines.

The dangerous side of medicines is their potential to diminish the body's own healing work. This is what Cayce alluded to when he warned about “palliatives” that deceive the soul with half truths and temporary relief. It's also what he meant when he warned that we shouldn't come to rely on any condition outside of ourselves that could be assimilated by the body inwardly. All of this is to say, take the medications prescribed by the physician you trust. But keep in mind this thought: what those chemicals can do is temporarily - and somewhat artificially - give your body an experience of greater oneness. Healing that really takes hold and lasts must come from changing one's inner consciousness and vibration. That happens most effectively from consistent and persistent human effort (i.e., engaging one's desires, purposes, and will) - something that pills all too easily allow us to skip.

Cayce's healing philosophy includes other insights that can help us avoid misunderstanding. For example, one principle states that the best treatment procedures sometimes cause a temporary worsening of conditions. If we didn't recognize this possibility, we might give up just before the benefits begin to appear. A closely related principle states that when a body is re-establishing its attunement, it tends to be more sensitive. Again, if we misunderstand that heightened sensitivity, we might not see the good that is slowly being effected.

The mind is a focus of other healing principles. The unconscious mind plays a role in many illnesses and diseases. One example of this is the karmic factor in health problems. Memories from previous incarnations, stored in the soul mind, can trigger problems in the body. Of course, we shouldn't go so far as to suppose that every health challenge has past-life roots; nevertheless, the perspective of reincarnation can help us understand what we could possibly be dealing with as we seek healing.

The familiar Cayce axiom, “Mind is the builder,” leads us to wonder exactly which attitudes and emotions best foster healing. The readings emphasize several:

* Self-acceptance. As we rid ourselves of self-condemnation, we make room for healing forces to enter.

* Optimism and hope. We're encouraged to expect healing.* Patience. It's much easier and quicker to destroy health than it is to rebuild it.

We need to be willing to patiently invest whatever time is required.

Alongside these specific attitudes and emotions, we're invited to use the creative potential of visualization to stimulate our own healing. The mind's image-making capacity can be directed in such a way that we “see” the healing transformation taking place. This is not something that's accomplished in a single visualization session. Like all the Cayce health-promoting approaches, it requires persistence and works best in conjunction with other healing methods.

Perhaps the most important principle of the mind's relationship to healing concerns purposefulness. A person can experience temporarily an outer healing - that is, in the physical body only - yet still be spiritually sick. What cures the soul? A commitment to a purposeful life. Not just any purpose, but instead one that reflects care for other people.

On occasion a reading from Cayce would pose this question to the person who was ill: What would you do with your life if you were healed? The position of Cayce's psychic source was simply this: Why correct the physical condition unless there's also going to be an inner correction? People who are looking for both inner and outer healing are the best candidates for restored health and vitality. In Cayce's philosophy, healing should equip us to be more useful to others.

With this ideal of service in mind, we might also wonder just how we can be channels of healing to others. What principles govern our efforts to be healers to those for whom we have concern? One principle is based on the spiritual connections that exist between all people. It states that as we bring the experience of oneness into our own consciousness, it can profoundly help someone else experience oneness, attunement, and healing. Cayce's way of putting it was, “...raising the Christ Consciousness in self to such an extent as it may flow out of self to him thou would direct it to.” (281-7)

For this to be most effective, the recipient must desire such help and have requested healing prayer. Of course, we can always pray for someone, even if that individual hasn't asked us. But it's important that we not assume we know what's needed in any person's life. For one who hasn't specifically asked for prayer, we can simply offer prayers of protection and blessing, rather than try to direct healing energies to that person or for a specific condition.

In summary, the Cayce readings remind us that our natural state is wholeness and health. An innate wisdom within ourselves knows what's needed for healing. We should expect to get well, and we should be willing to do our part to make it possible.

BACKGROUND OF READING 673-1 F 25B1. 9/20/34 Cousin's letter: “Through the recommendation of Mrs. [601], I hasten to write you in reference to a cousin of mine in whom I am greatly interested and for whom I would leave no stone unturned to help. “This girl, last year in July, took sick very suddenly, never having had a sick day in her life. Her first symptoms were double vision, vomiting spells, severe headaches and dizziness. After seeing many neurologists, she was sent to a hospital for diagnosis. After a two weeks stay, her case was diagnosed as a case of brain tumor, inoperable and incurable, and a series of x-ray treatments prescribed. After a few months time, she almost completely recovered, regaining possession of all her faculties. After a time, due, which we think, to worry and aggravation, over depleted finances and illness of her mother, she became ill again and by spring of 1934 she was in a deplorable condition again, this time losing use of her left arm and leg. At the instigation of her doctor, she again entered the hospital for two weeks and after many severe tests, she was sent home, no better and with no definite course of cure or medication. “She has been incapacitated to the extent of being an invalid, although she is slowly regaining the use of her arm. “Now, these people have used all their resources to date, besides what they could borrow, to help this girl. She has been under a terrific strain [nervous strain], as her mother is critically ill with Bright's disease and her father has had two paralytic strokes, and as I stated previously, every available dollar has been spent to alleviate her suffering. “Therefore, I appeal to you, if there is anything humanly possible to be done for this girl who is the victim of circumstances far beyond her control, I am enclosing a check for $5 of my mother who is willing to help out in any way she can. She has limited means also but we feel if anything can be done for this poor child, we will use every effort to help her... “I neglected to state her age is 25 and she has an indomitable spirit of cheerfulness and optimism and courage.”

P R E S E N T Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis and L. B. Cayce. R E A D I N G Time of Reading 4: 00 to 4: 20 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., N.Y. (Physical Suggestion) 1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [673]. 2. As we find, there is a complication of conditions. Some may be said to be wholly psychopathic, and others more the outcome of these disorders, as well as pathological conditions. Hence we have those things that unless there is a great deal of patience and persistence will prove of little value in bringing a normal condition for the body; but rather prolonged and hopeless from the physical standpoint.

3. There has been, as we find, a great shock of a mental nature to this body; a betraying of confidence, a betraying of faith in someone. This then, combined with the pathological conditions makes a mental and a physical condition to be considered. This does not necessarily mean hopeless, but unless there can be an awakening to the inner self as to the abilities of a soul to meet the emergencies in a material world - and that there are those influences within self that may be aroused to the infinitive forces within and without self - the applications may be of little avail. 4. That there are the complications from toxic forces is indicated by the physical conditions that make - for one of the age, one of the general life that has been lived in an activity and in a usefulness in body and mind - a very unusual pathological effect. Yet these must be met, as well as the psychopathic conditions within the physical body. 5. The BLOOD SUPPLY, then, has been not only destroyed in its ability for its usefulness in the carrying of hopefulness to the vital forces, or psychic forces of the body itself in the inner self, but has also brought with it - in the effects from the HUMOR that is created within the fluids of the blood supply - that which produces the inflammation in the lymph; the stiffness to the whole of the tendons in such measures and ways as to make for very detrimental conditions. 6. Of course, from a shock to the whole system the NERVOUS SYSTEMS are all shattered; making for periods even when the body-physical is unable to control its emotions, even its will force, until they have been overcome and at times even subjugated - which has been done so often through the applications of the hypnosis, through the activity of drugs, and through the activity of those things that have made for the deadening of the conditions until these have added to the psychopathic and the pathological conditions within the system itself; making for conditions or poisons that should also be eliminated. 7. In the general effect that is created over the system, then, WE find it would be necessary - if we are to follow these conditions - that these be taken rather step by step. This may be given that may be helpful, hopeful for the body in the immediate, but these must be carried on two and a half to three weeks; then other measures must be meted or added at such a period. 8. First, then, in making the application for those things that we find would be the most helpful, we would begin by taking internally the Animated Ash, that will make for the creating of a greater ability for the separation from those activities in the system through the creating of greater abilities for the blood supply, the activities of the organs as related to the creating of a stabilizing of the physical forces in the body, the abilities to assimilate, to create, to designate - as it were - IN the activity of the functioning those things to be used in the system itself, in producing resuscitating influences in the body. So: 9. At least once each day we would take a quarter grain of the Animated Ash; and when this is taken we would have the application of the ultra-violet ray for the DEEP therapy. This we would apply to the cerebrospinal system, making the direct rays over the 6th, 7th and 8th dorsal centers, that there may be carried into the flow of the circulation the activities of the Ash upon the whole body, taking from the system those effects created by the activity of the lymph being inflamed through this condition that has been described in the torso of the body, that would create more for the activity of the liver, the spleen, the pancreas, the lacteal ducts, the kidneys, all the organs as related to this portion of the

body, a more normal reaction to the conditions in the system - or more ORDERLY. The ultra-violet should be applied once each day, following the Ash; and after the quartz light (and it should be given with the quartz light) is heated to its strength - or for a minute and a half to two minutes' burning, then apply to the body not more than a minute and a half. 10. Each evening when the body is to be retired, we would massage along the whole cerebrospinal system equal parts of Tincture of Myrrh and Olive Oil (heating the oil and adding the myrrh), that will make for a strengthening to the superficial circulation that will strike in, especially in those centers where there is the coordination with the sympathetic and cerebrospinal - or in the upper portion from the 1st to the 4th and 5th cervical; from there to the 4th and 5th dorsal, and the whole of the lumbar area and throughout the locomotories (that is, in the lower portion of the body), over all the lower limbs. This we would keep. 11. We would be mindful of the diet; and that which has been indicated is very good. Keep this. 12. We do not find that the whole of that which has been prognosed in the diagnosis heretofore should come to pass, IF there are kept together the desires for the BODY - and on the part of the body - to complete within THIS experience that whereunto it has come into the experience. 13. Then, in twenty-eight days - or twenty-one to twenty-eight days - we would give further instructions. 14. Ready for questions. 15. (Q) Was her condition diagnosed correctly by the physicians? (A) As indicated, we do not find it so. It is as much a psychopathic condition as it is a condition of the system itself, or pathologic. Do these things. Watch closely the activities. Keep the cheery word about the body. Awaken as much as possible the desires on the part of the body not only to be rid of those obsessions that overcome the body at times, but that the usefulness of the abilities in the mental and material world may be filled in this experience. 16. (Q) Any advice to those who would help her? (A) As has just been given; in keeping that attitude of hopefulness for a PURPOSEFULNESS in its activity. 17. (Q) Was her whole condition due to this shock as mentioned? (A) As indicated, this was the basis of the condition. Then the giving of those things that have produced as much of the pathological condition as anything else, or a great deal of it; with the other. 18. (Q) Is her condition curable? (A) As we have indicated, it will be hard to meet; but if there is patience and persistence - and the ability to awaken within the body the DESIRE on the part of ITSELF to WANT to carry on, it may be eliminated. It'll mean some radical changes, as we find; not only for the treatments but for those things in the ABILITIES of the body to do for itself. 19. We are through for the present. (Letter was enclosed explaining the Animated Ash. Empty the Ash OUT of capsule on tongue and wash down with water; do not take IN capsule. Letter was enclosed to one applying ultra-violet ray.

TEXT OF READING 1121-1 F 50This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of February, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1121] via husband, new Associate Member of the Ass'n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [623]'s husband, Mr. [2461]. P R E S E N T Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. R E A D I N G Time of Reading 11: 25 to 11: 40 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., Ohio. (Physical Suggestion) 1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1121]. 2. As we find, there is a complication of disturbances. These arise from more than one cause. And one becomes a contributory cause to the other; thus producing other disturbances through this combination of causes. 3. There have been pressures in the system, and after effects of disturbances when there became an involvement of tissue through the lack of proper circulation through portions where adherence in soft tissue produced a lesion and scar tissue. 4. Then, with the effect of changes in the body through the lack of eliminations, or the changing of same - or during those periods of menopause, there became then - through this gradual change - an excess of calciums, and the effect of the potash that had not been absorbed by the body. 5. Hence we have in the extremities, in the pressures in the body, in the various portions of the system, this combination of effects. 6. And while there may be aid brought for the body, as we find, it will require a consistent effort and persistency upon the part of those making such applications. Also there will be the necessity for changes to be made in the applications from time to time. For these, as we find, must be met as not only the chemical changes are wrought in the blood stream itself, but as there are the variations of the affectations through the disturbances where hindrances have produced same in the body. 7. These, then, are the conditions that are to be met. 8. For the BLOOD SUPPLY shows these effects; as do also the conditions through the NERVOUS FORCES, and the activities in the FUNCTIONING of the SYSTEM itself. 9. Then, in the beginning, we find: 10. It would be well first to seek the Mud from streams nigh to the body. But that from the clay, rather than the sands. 11. This, as we find, (the Mud or Clay) would be applied to the body along the area from the lumbars to the area between the shoulders, along the spine; or from the sacral to the cervicals. This we would apply and use for periods of two or three hours at the time, until this has AFFECTED the system - as it were - by the DRAWING that is effected by mud in this PARTICULAR portion of the country. As we find, this will be found out

from Dayton, north, and where there have been playgrounds - and swimming pools. This mud or dirt here, at the cliff, may be taken, dried, ground, purified by standing in water and taking the dross off; and then made into the form of an antiphlogistian poultice (though this, of course, is not of the same nature; but is of the same character or CONSISTENCY). 12. Such packs we would apply at least twice a day for three or four or five days. Keep quantities of this Mud on hand. 13. Then leave off the packs and begin with a massage, using this combination of oils: 14. To 6 ounces of Russian White Oil as the base, add - IN THE ORDER NAMED, and these proportions:

Olive Oil........................1 ounce, Cedar Oil (not Nut Cedar, but Cedar Wood Oil)...........1 ounce, Witchhazel.......................1 ounce, Sassafras Oil...................20 minims.

These, to be sure, will separate; but shake together before or as they are to be used. Then for a period of ten days, use this combination as a massage - only in the evening. This should extend (the massage) from the base of the brain to the end of the spine, and also over the lower limbs particularly to the feet, and to those areas along the sciatic centers. 15. During the whole period we would have the diet to be rather of nuts, vegetables, fruits, than meats or breads. But use these well cooked, or well prepared; as well as having one meal each day of only raw fruits or raw vegetables. 16. Coffee, tea or milk may be taken in moderation. Do not use creams or milk either in the tea OR coffee; but these are to be used (coffee and tea) merely as stimulants. 17. Again begin, after the ten days or evenings of the oil massage, with the use of the Mud Packs along the spine. Then we would begin to use these also across the diaphragm area, that the digestive forces may be affected. 18. After they have been used again then for ten days, twice each day, then we would give further instructions for this body. 19. Do these for these periods indicated. 20. Ready for questions. 21. (Q) How thick should the Mud Packs be? (A) About a quarter of an inch thick. They may be covered with a cloth on top, you see (though the Packs are to be direct to the body, on the skin), to prevent too much destruction to the bed or the places where the body lies. 22. (Q) Is there any particular part of the playground where the Mud should be secured? (A) As indicated, there where there is the cliff - and where the spring runs, or just under the bridge - Overlook. 23. We are through for the present.

R2. 2/26/36 Letter from friend [2461]'s wife [623], re [1121]: “I did not mail my other letter giving [1121]'s case history, but will enclose with this [as follows]: She [1121] was operated for tumor on the brain last spring in Ann Arbor; three times she has been dying, but seemingly because of her otherwise strong system, she lived and slowly got better. She talks a little now, but she is hard to understand and her right side and arm seem paralyzed. Her mind is clear and always has been when she was conscious. She gets blue and discouraged and cries very hard and long. This is very distracting to the rest of the family. My husband [2461] helps her husband bring her downstairs in a chair and then put her in a wheel chair. [Note by GD: This case history was written by [623] on 1/24/36 but was not mailed until she wrote again on 2/26/36, when she continued as follows: ] “I read Mrs. [1121]'s reading this morning, as it was in Mr. [2461]'s pocket, he having taken it with him yesterday to get the dirt... Mr. [1121] asked Mr. [2461] why he didn't mention you before she was operated on [he read my daughter [951]'s reading a year ago]... What I want to tell you is this. They all think the reading is very good. The trained nurse has read similar readings [of yours] but says nothing to compare with this. The Doctor says it is perfect, and is for it. Overlook Park and playgrounds is north of Dayton, Ohio, near W. Milton. Mr. [2461] says had you been there you could not have described it better. control of her limbs, her husband would have to lift them into the car. After doctoring 3-4 years she was operated on for brain tumor by Dr. Pete [...] from N.Y.C. in a hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. They removed all of the tumor (about the size of a dollar) but the jelly mass around the tumor (about the size of your hand) could not all be removed - too close to the brain. They were up there several months. She came home and was some better for a while, could get around the house some and could sit up. Then she began to get worse; I think it was then they asked for a Cayce reading. Doctor and nurse were amazed at its correctness, saying they could not have described the case so well themselves. They followed directions, but Mrs. [1121]'s patience was wearing out and she would not leave the packs on her spine. She had lost use of one arm and they sat by her bed and held the other arm, but as soon as they had left her, she would get hold of the pack and throw it; so they had to give up. She did not live many months after that. Died in September 1936.”

We have the body here, [1137]. 2. As we find, there are rather serious conditions or disturbances in the physical forces of this body. These have to do with conditions that have been long standing. And while in their incipiency or beginning they were apparently of a minor nature, these have gradually come to be very definite reactions; and those that without a great deal of persistence and precautions will be hard to deal with. 3. For first these began with an over-taxing of the physical strength of the body. Then there was the lack of the proper nourishments in a balanced order through the system, until the very walls of the muscular forces were effected, as well as the lymph flow along the arteries. Hence we had a seepage that has not been cared for. 4. These have produced first the effects of a rheumatic condition, then a condition of a low fever. Or apparently that of the nature of the strep in an easy stage in the blood, or malaria. 5. Then these have become, as we find, rather localized. 6. Hence we have a mental and a nervous and a muscular disturbance, which we find combined in one; yet oft these VARIED effects give reactions in themselves through the physical conditions of the body. 7. As we find, then, in making for replenishing forces in the system: 8. It would be necessary first that there be a vitalizing force in the circulatory forces of the body. A portion of helpful effects may be brought about in the diet, but there must be set up or stimulated a circulation that will be more effective, as it were - or more activative than at present, in what may be termed (for this body) that BETWEEN the superficial and the deeper circulation. 9. Hence while the food values should be body-building, in the first they should not be so rich in vitamins or calories or replenishing forces as not to be able to be handled by the digestive forces or the katabolism of the system. For if these were to produce such engorgements in the beginning, they would be less effective and later very destructive to the better influences through the body. 10. But use those foods that are rich in the vitamins that make for a stimulation to a lymph circulation.

11. And we would CONTROL same by the massages and the low electrical forces that may be had by the hand violet ray. 12. And rather than making most of these applications of the violet ray with the bulb appliance, we would use the rod that charges the whole system - and especially to the lower limbs. 13. These would be the helpful applications to this body, then, [1137], as we find: 14. First we would have two to three times each day an ounce and a half to two ounces of tomato juice; also the rich vitamins from the milk that is dried, or milk and egg, milk with bread that would be crumbled in same. Have these as a great portion of the diet. To be sure, these would be well- balanced with a diet consisting of a great deal of citrus fruit, the vitamins that may be had in Maltex or whole wheat as a cereal. But do not take the cereals at the same period when the citrus fruit juices are taken in the system; do not take them even on the same day! 15. Have raw vegetables during the noon portion of the day. 16. And have a well-balanced cooked vegetable diet for the evening meal, using three vegetables grown above the ground to one grown below; with lamb, fowl or fish. 17. Each day we would have a treatment of the violet ray. On Tuesdays and Fridays have the bulb applicator used from base of brain to the end of spine, and along the sciatic center, even to the lower portion of the feet. On the other days of the week have just the rod applicator where the electrical charge is taken, and let at least two or three of such treatments each week be with the rod to the feet, rather than held in the hand. 18. We would have the oil rubs; a combination of Olive Oil and Tincture of Myrrh - equal portions, heating the oil to add the myrrh. Always rub AWAY FROM the head, and TOWARDS the lower extremities. 19. These, as we find, would offer those helpful forces for the body, for the next six weeks. Then we would give further instructions. 20. Ready for questions. 21. (Q) Is there a clot on the brain, as doctors have diagnosed same? (A) It is rather the condition as described, in which there is a leakage - and it makes for a pressure on LYMPH, rather than being a clot. This may form into a clot unless the eliminations may be kept so, and the building up may be made so as to prevent these pressures increasing. 22. We are through for the present.

BACKGROUND OF READING 1365-1 M 63B1. 4/20/37 wife's letter: Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia Dear Mr. Cayce: I am interested in your readings for my husband, [1365] who had a tumor removed from his brain, (left side), September 23, 1935. A portion of the brain cell was also removed. Before the operation he suffered greatly and daily with a headache on this side of his head. And after suffering this way for about two years, I think, he began to lose use of his right arm, hand and leg. This was all gradual, and this was when he was informed by his physician that he had a tumor, and was advised to go as soon as possible and have it removed, which he did. He underwent the operation with satisfaction and returned home, but has never been well since. He was at home four months after the operation, returning to his office work the last week in January, 1936. He is a stock broker, having been a telegraph operator some years ago. Since the operation he has been gradually been losing the use of all of his limbs, he cannot write with his right hand, and has much difficulty in feeding himself sometimes. I have to bathe him and assist him in dressing and fix him comfortable when he lies down every time. His throat is effected too, his voice being weak and he has difficulty in talking, is always depressed and emotional, cries about himself often. Just can't seem to cheer him up. He is anxious that you give him a physical reading, and I believe that you can help him if any one can. I have been told that the operation was only to give room for the tumor to grow. He sleeps well, has a good appetite. His right hand right foot have been swollen ever since the operation and for the past two weeks, his left foot has swollen some, his neck is stiff and often aches.

Hence we find that there should be the application of that not only to aid in distributing the pressures and in relieving the activities of these pressures, but of that also in the system to go more to the basis or the cause of the condition; producing better coagulation, better and more effective coordination in eliminations; thus aiding the circulation to create a more perfect balance in the system. 6. As has been indicated through the description given here, the pressures in the locomotary areas, the effects upon the mucous membranes that cause a creating of a swelling in the extremities and the loss of activity in other portions, arise from those very disturbances that have been indicated. 7. Then, while we would make specific applications (as we will give) for the first thirty-six days, after these are begun then we would give the further instructions or the changes - according to the effectiveness of these in the system, and that which as we find may prove to be a rehabilitation of the activities. 8. Thus we should be able to prevent this accumulation again in portions of the brain forces or pressures there that hinder so much in not only the sensory forces but in the activities of the locomotions and in the effectual activity of the circulatory system. 9. First we would begin with the use of the low electrical vibrations of the Wet Cell Appliance carrying both the Nitrate of Silver and the Chloride of Gold solutions; one used one day, the other the next day. The applications would be made in this manner: 10. One day the smaller anode would be attached first, to the 2nd cervical center - or that close to the base of the brain, 1st and 2nd cervical center, see? while the larger plate, through which the 10% solution of Nitrate of Silver passes, would be attached last, to the 4th lumbar plexus - or the locomotary plexus, see? this just above or just at the axis of the sacral - applied for thirty minutes only, every other day. 11. The next day the smaller anode would be attached first, to the 9th dorsal center; while the larger plate through which the Chloride of Gold solution passes (3 grains to an ounce of distilled water; that proportion) would be attached last, to the umbilicus and lacteal duct center - and the attachments are to be kept for forty minutes, every other day. 12. Preferably give these in the evening when the body is ready to retire, one given one day, the other the next day. 13. The Nitrate of Silver solution will tend to eat or destroy the lead connection unless it is taken from the solution immediately when each application is finished, and it is wiped off. Then fifteen minutes before it is to be applied (which is every other day, as indicated), put into the solution and in the connection, in the jar carrying the solution, see? 14. Each evening following the Appliance treatment, give a general massage with a combination of oils that will not only be absorbed by the body but will aid in eliminating destructive forces to the muscular activities or to the superficial circulation. 15. When such a massage is given, let the body lie prone upon the face. Begin in the central portion, or the 9th dorsal area, and massage in a gentle and general circular motion along the cerebrospinal system towards the arms, you see; following out to the fingertips in both arms, from the point where the nerve forces direct to the arms; then from the base of the brain to where the connection has been toward the arms, see? Then begin at the 9th dorsal and go downward along each side of the cerebrospinal system, extending entirely to the feet, the lower limbs, the back side of the limbs especially but a circular motion with same. Take at least twenty to thirty minutes in giving such a

treatment. If there is any superfluous portion of the combination of the oils left, these may be sponged off; but massage preferably just what the body will absorb - and then the bath given of a morning, rather than of an evening after the oil rubs. For such massaging, put together the oils in this manner: 16. To 4 ounces of Russian White Oil as the base, add - IN THE ORDER NAMED:

Cedar Wood Oil.......................1 ounce, Oil of Wintergreen.................1/2 ounce, Oil of Pine Needles................1/2 ounce, Sassafras Oil......................1/4 ounce, Compound Tincture of Benzoin.........1 ounce.

These will tend to separate, but shake together and - when ready to use - pour into an open container or saucer. Dip the fingers in same and massage as has been indicated. 17. It is very well also that this combination be massaged AROUND the body at the diaphragm, or the 9th dorsal center or area - which would include, of course, the area at which the Gold Solution is to be applied, or the attachment from same, at the 9th dorsal and the lacteal and umbilicus center, or just three fingers from the navel to the right, you see - where the plate is to be attached that passes through the Gold Solution. 18. At least three times a week take Alcaroid after the meals, that there may be a better assimilation. 19. Once or twice a week take the Caroid and Bile Salts Tablets for the activity of the liver. 20. Use enemas when there are not the proper eliminations through the alimentary canal. 21. Do these for the thirty-six days; then we would give the further instructions. 22. In the matter of the diet: Be mindful that the tuberous or bulbous vegetables are not used too much in the diet, or hog meat of ANY nature. No fried foods of any nature. The vegetables should be of the leafy variety, or those such as beans or lentils, or the various forms of greens that may be cooked. 3. Now as we find, there are physical and mental disturbances with this body. These have their inception from conditions which have arisen from the general strain upon the physical body by childbearing, and conditions which have existed since the last of such, - as combined with some attempts for prevention of same. 4. These, then, are disturbances as we find with this body. 5. In the mental reactions do we find the greater disturbance. 6. The continued use of sedatives or hypnotics, and these combined with those forms of the compound from saltpeter, will only tend to make for a greater destruction to the impulse of the nerve force as related to brain AND to the activities in the body, as they reflect through the mental, imaginative and physical forces of the body. 7. These have begun to produce conditions in the portions of the brain where there is felt at times quite severe pain, of which the body complained before there was the breakdown. 8. This is NOT in the form of a tumor, but is rather a thickening of the tissue there, - owing to those conditions and pressures which exist in relationship to the organs of the pelvis with the nerve forces as related to the glandular reaction in the base of the brain, as well as to the frontal and the side portion of same where the glands in the head coordinate with the SYMPATHETIC nervous system. 9. As we find, we would bring the better conditions for this body if there were the transferring of the body from the present environs or surroundings to such an institution as in Macon, Missouri. For, there the body might have the hospitalization under more sympathetic environs, and also the use of manipulative forces to correct those pressures that exist along the cerebrospinal system; also the use of applications that, by absorption, might reduce those conditions which exist in portions of the brain cavity, or brain cellular force itself. 10. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2744]; this we have had before. 3. There are many changes in the general physical and mental forces since last we had same here. 4. Ready for questions. 5. (Q) What caused the condition? (A) As we find, and as we have indicated for the body, there were and are pressures that exist from those happenings at the time of childbirth. This pressure upon the centers - the end of the spine and in the lumbar and sacral-ileum axis - has produced those tendencies for deterioration of nerve reflexes. These conditions, as we find, will NOT respond to purely medical or drug reaction. There is the NECESSITY of the causes being removed, or the sources, if there would be any permanent help to the body. Hence we find that if the body were changed from the present environs, gradually leaving off the sedatives and removing the pressures - which might be done in the osteopathic sanitarium at Macon, Missouri, there might be responses sufficient to regenerate and build the body back to near normalcy. Thus the body might have the abilities to resume many - or most - of its responsibilities, and it become as a helpful association with the family; rather than there being a constant question in their minds as well as in the body's itself. It is true that unless there is the ability to relieve this pressure soon, there may be the necessity to give the body the vibratory metals - or the metallic reaction from gold - to aid the system in responding, for the nerves to the plasm in nerve tissue itself, AND to prevent softening or deterioration to brain cells. It is NOT a condition of brain tumors, though some of these MAY arise unless there is an even circulation of nerve impulse AND blood supply builded in the body. 6. (Q) If removed to Macon, is there any special direction to those in charge? (A) The pressures as we have indicated will be found to be existent. There should be the consideration of the first information we gave, for the corrections were never made properly. And this present information combined with same would indicate the condition existent through the pelvic, the coccyx AND the sacral and lumbar areas especially; though, to be sure, in the present there are lesions also in the upper portion of the spine.

Care, prayer, AND the better surroundings, would make for much quicker response for this body. 7. (Q) Approximately how long would it take to correct the pressures? (A) This depends entirely upon the response, you see, and as to how soon this would be begun. 8. (Q) Would it be advisable to take her home and try a method of cure? Each day take internally one-eighth grain of the Animated Ash (emptied dry on tongue and washed down with a little water). Ten minutes after this has been taken, use the Ultra-Violet Ray over the affected areas - only for a minute or a minute and a half, and have the green glass projected between the body and the Ultra-Violet light. Use only the Mercury Quartz Light, not the Carbon Light, and do not use this without the green glass. The Light would be about forty-two inches (42”) from the body - over the areas affected - and the green glass about fourteen inches (14”) from the body - a piece of green plate glass about 10x12” projected between the Light and the body. 9. This will bring ease for the body. 10. First take one-eighth grain of Animated Ash, you see. Ten minutes later apply the Light. Do this the same time each day - don't make it one time of morning and another time of evening, but each day at the same time. 11. Also to quiet the nagging pains at times there may be used a very heavy magnet over the areas where the distresses are indicated. My husband is critically ill and I wrote to a very saintly friend in California who in turn wrote to friends for prayer in his behalf. So I have just received a letter from a friend, Mrs. [5112], ..., Ills., who served on the Mission field in the Belgian Congo with us. She told me about you and of your great help to many, many people. My husband suffered an accident while in Mission Service in the Congo. He later developed a brain tumor. We came back to America and he was operated on for brain tumor, but the operation was not a surgical success. He has had four different series of deep X-ray therapy treatment in the last four years. Suddenly the tumor has begun to grow and X-ray therapy is not proving useful. As the tumor grows he is gradually losing the use of his right side and speech. I am inclosing a letter from his doctor from whom he took treatment at the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta - so that you might know how serious his condition is. I don't think he could come to Virginia Beach for a reading - and because he needs me so, and because of the seriousness of his condition I feel that I should not leave him. He suffers agony untold at times because of headaches caused by the growing tumor. He has 3 times within the last 16 months been to the Mayo Clinic has spent 7 weeks in Medical Centre, N.Y., and has been to the Vaughan Clinic in Richmond, Va... He was a flier in the last war, had walking typhoid while in Egypt. Became very allergic 10 years ago and has been on a wheat-free diet since. Four years ago his eyesight started to fail. Two years ago short spells of amnesia were experienced, a recovery from which left his eyesight worse. Eight months ago he had LaGrippe and from it a loss of memory for one week with eyesight so much worse that could only resume part of his work. Six months ago was found unconscious, complete loss of memory, almost total blindness, and is in this condition at the time of writing. Five leading medical men have diagnosed his case as: 1. The small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal. 10. Use the Appliance in this manner for thirty minutes each day for at least fifteen days. 11. Then leave off the Gold Solution and use in its place the Spirits of Camphor (commercial strength). The large nickel plate would still be attached to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus, but the small plate would then be attached to the 4th lumbar center. 12. 16. Shake the solution and pour a small quantity into an open saucer and massage in a circular motion all the body will absorb, daily. Do not pour back into the bottle any of the oils that may be left in the saucer. These will separate, so shake them well before these are applied each time. Then sponge off the body with rub alcohol. 17. Keep in the diet a great deal of those things that carry iron, silicon and phosphorous. 18. KalDak will be a good tonic. Take a heaping teaspoonful every other day, at first dissolved in a little hot water and then the tumbler filled with milk and cream - or milk that has not been separated from the cream. 19. There are both physical and mental conditions that are abnormal in this body and to the body itself. The beginning or seat of the trouble in the body, dates back to the childhood of the body. See? and has to do with the conditions which were brought about at the time of puberty of child. The affection and affliction brought on to the physical body produced in the body from the mental strains that are brought to part [bear?] on account of her conditions until at time she became abnormal to the extreme. Again when this was likened by suggestion to the body, the body was brought to normal again. After being a mother this condition became one well set up. Action on the blood supply to the brain from the portion of body affected by the genitive, organism of the system. Hence when any subject approaching these conditions in the body is brought about the mind at once becomes, well sickly, diseased, abnormal. The treatment accorded in the body, after this, physical treatment we are speaking of were not such to improve her, physical, mental, spiritual development and feeling and approach of the body. Until at present time, we find the body at times, its sickly, unwell, feeling bad, neurasthenia, hardening of the lobes of the liver. All these effects come in the system in the power of suggestion, when they were attempted to reach the body. All is put into one gallon of distilled water, reduced by simmering to one quart, filtered through cotton, add two gills of grain alcohol, sweeten with cane (not beet sugar) palatable to the taste. This taken in the system morning and evening until the whole quantity has been taken two teaspoonsful at a dose. This we will find will relieve the strain over the physical body. See? Tone up the system, resupply blood, rebuild force to the whole system. Then we will remove the clot that has formed at the base of the first vertebrae, or cranium. The clot is not within the cranium itself, but had formed in the entrance of this vein, coming out or carrying back blood from this. We find that the normal mind will return. This clot will have to be cut out. Cannot be removed by absorption, it is a simple operation. To the right side at the base of the cranium, just through the cuticle. Go over him carefully, examine him thoroughly and tell us what is the matter with him, if anything. 2. EC: We have in this body of Mr. [3748] a peculiar abnormal nervous condition of the whole nervous system, commencing from time away back. We have at present this condition: We have to do, or deal with that of brain force inside of the brain itself, and that of the nervous force of the cerebrospinal nervous system, with traces shown through that of the nerves as coming in special conjunction with that of the sympathetics, from the base of the brain where they join on up here from the inside, the first cervical. The condition is produced from two causes in the body. First, from the condition produced in the body internally, or that of the action of a foreign substance to the forces of the cardiac plexus. The secondary, not the first. This produced the first straining force or retarding to the rebuilding of the blood force, to the propagation of the nervous system, or the eliminating powers or taking away the used force in nerve matter, eliminated from the body. Second, from the condition produced in the head by a nervous shock or fear to the sensory organism of the system, which has produced into the brain itself a clot (that is not removed) of used matter not expelled through its proper channel. Hence the condition we have of the mental faculties, brought about by these two existing conditions in the body. 3. We have in the brain, cells, in the cranium, in the brain itself, impressions received by the nervous system, by the sensory organism of the system, transmitted to the brain through that of the channel of the cerebrospinal nervous system, by what is known as white and gray matter of the nerve tissue inside of it. The fear in the body, which is abnormal from healthful, or the opposite from a whole condition, becomes repressed, or suppressed by the conditions existing in the body. Hence we have, as would be termed from the exterior, or by material man from the outside, a man demented at times. At others, a normal, acting, working man. The fear, from some expression of thought, brought to bear on the sensory system, produces a flush of the condition over the whole system, and the man becomes, as it were, raving or falling. Once one way, once another. It depends on the condition we have expressed and how it is expressed to the body itself. Either through that of sight, that of hearing, that of the touch or that of all combined. It comes on without any fore-knowledge either to the observer from the outside or to the man himself, except at times he will know it is going to appear. 4. No resistive power from the outside, no material, has any effect, except to be with it, quiet it, soothe it. More is to be reached through that of the sensory system, through that of ease of mind. Repress the fear, soothe the temples, with pressing of the hands to the head and along the spine, a dash of water in the face. Those external expressions to the

system. Nothing else has any effect, unless we produce a deadening to the whole nervous system, through that of a narcotic or hypodermic. 5. This condition is situated, as we have it, in the brain, at the right side, midway between the frontal and back brain, above the lower or third, above the sense as we know of remembrance, or to where impressions are brought to the mind of past occurrences, impressed to the brain, or those cells-like expressions transmitted and engraven [engraved] on the brain, or producing a cell wherewith it is remembered. 6. (Q) What treatment would you prescribe to relieve these conditions? (A) Never use force, that is, physical force, by over-powering of the body, or repressing those thoughts expressed by the patient at the time the condition comes over the body, but take the condition as we have it at the time of these spells. We humor, that is, we give in (force from the outside now) to these forces. We humor him in his acts and wants to what he expresses himself, until we gain control of the thoughts of the body itself and until we sink the body into a state of, not as it goes off at times, but through repression; or, as known, the control over the abnormal, or a state of hypnosis. Then we remove these thoughts from the body. A continuation of these forces, letting them gain power and control over himself, will bring him back to normal man and a normal condition in the body. Then, we will remove the rest of the conditions we have brought about over the system by this condition existing, as it has, through those of the blood forces and through the organs of the system in itself. Or, we can remove this clot from the brain, by use of the knife, on the scalp itself. 7. (Q) Any other treatment you would prescribe for the present. Now, we find the physical conditions in this body have not improved since last we had this here. The change that is most apparent is the effect as is produced in the brain center, especially that of locomotion to the left side, and the accentuation of that on the right, or from the left lobe, and the right side being involved, see? 4. This may be greatly relieved, and eventually the condition overcome, were those conditions carried out that would prevent the softening, or the cells from running together in brain, or from their forming tumors or the like on the brain, where cells have broken under stress and strain and eventually found their lodgement in centers in brain. 5. The condition would necessitate that of the attention in a place where the actions and the scissions (seizures?) of the body could be followed very closely for considerable time, for the conditions as are to be overcome must needs be met at least every third to fifth day. 6. In a change of those conditions accorded the body for the improvement under the present conditions, the first would be to use the manipulations to prevent the blood flow in the upper portion, or the normal flow be subjugated through the condition in the cervical and upper dorsal, and by keeping the condition in the general system in order. The reliefs for the body, would, of necessity, then, as seen, be met from time to time, as the changes develop from the change in circulation and the effects that same produce on the body, especially in the locomotion of same, and the brain's reaction to same. 7. Then, we would give at the present time that as best to be done, to use the vibratory force from electrically driven vibrator over the cervical and the upper dorsal. This will give REST to the body, see? Keep the body under those subjugations of mild bromides - not sufficient that same reacts to the outer portion, or to the capillary circulation, but such as the diluted Bromidia, or a combination of Bromide of Soda, Iodide of Potassium, and Bromide Potassium in small quantities, combined in a carrier of Peptotol, or a pepsin, with the simple syrup, see? proportions - about 10% solution Bromide Potassium, see? to 6 ounces of Pepsin, with simple syrup. Add 10 minims. A 10% solution of Iodide of Potassium 8 minims, 10% Bromide of Soda 10 minims.

I thank Him for enabling you to heal those who have been without hope. I do not know what to say except that I have been ill for the past year, and have prayed constantly for healing and that I might learn the lesson contained in the suffering. God's love has seen me through every siege of pain, but I am unhealed. The pain is of a nature often terrifying. Last year while serving as a nurse in the Outpost Hospital, I received a severe blow on the head. My head has been sore ever since, there being frequent headaches and a strange tightening of my head. The skull x-rays show a shadow, and I have been advised to see a brain surgeon. I am unable to do this, as I am without money. This does not discourage me; I believe that God can heal me, could I but attain to the faith and understanding necessary. My good friends, the Rosicrucian Helpers, have encouraged me with their love and beautiful letters, but my condition does not respond. The condition of my head limits reading and study. For the past years, I have tried to live as Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, but I have failed always. EC: Yes. Kind of cold. We have the body here, [5081]. 3. As we find these conditions where there was the injury to the head, by the fall and the strike, are gradually becoming worse; unless there are measures taken to reduce the thickening of the casement of the brain forces itself, and we will have eventually such a pressure on brain forces as to disable the body, possibly entirely. 4. If there is the use of the Wet Cell Appliance, carrying Nitrate of Silver and Spirits of Camphor, and then massage to carry this off in such a way as to eliminate, we may reduce the lesions being formed and bring back near normal conditions for this body. 5. The manner in which these administrations are to be given through the Wet Cell Appliance: This should be made with a small amount of increase in the strength, that is, with two pounds of the Copper Sulphate as the base. Use at least six drams of Zinc with one and one-half ounces of the Acid. Use only one-half pound of the Charcoal. 6. Make a two percent solution of the Silver Nitrate, using one ounce of the two percent Silver Nitrate solution, one ounce of grain alcohol and one ounce of distilled water. 7. The Spirits of Camphor should be commercial strength. 8. Apply the small copper plate, carrying the Silver Nitrate, to the 2nd cervical. Apply the larger plate, through which the solution passes, to the umbilical or lacteal duct centers, for this must pass through the assimilations and the circulations and will remove the hindrances to the injury in the cranium itself. This would be about four fingers from the navel center to the right, and two fingers up on this body (the width of the fingers). 9. The Camphor should be applied at the lower portion of the 3rd cervical, not the upper portion, but the lower portion of the 3rd cervical. 10. Use the Silver Nitrate one day and the Spirits of Camphor one day. Do this for at least thirty minutes, preferably when the body is ready to retire. 11. Follow this by the massage away from the head, commence at the temples, around back of ears, and then at the front of ears and across the chin, all the way down the neck and especially to the upper dorsal areas, to the 3rd, 4th and 5th dorsal, but the principal portions, of course, is through the shoulders, frontal portions across the bones of the neck and down either side of the spine. These should be well given each day following the applications, that is, one, one day and one the next day.

12. Do disconnect and take the connections out of the solutions when not in use. Do keep the attachments clean and attach at least twenty minutes before they are attached to the body and give this time to receive the charge while the U-shaped wire that passes through the solution will hold the vibration if laid in the sun, yet these should have sufficient time to make the connections in the Appliance when attached to the body. 13. Do that so the conditions will enable the body to better be the nurse, as it is. Administering to others is the best way to help self. More individuals become so anxious about their own troubles, and yet helping others is the best way to rid yourself of your own troubles. For what is the pattern? He gave up Heaven and entered physical being that ye might have access to the Father. Then what are you grumbling about because you dislike your mother? She dislikes you as much, but change this into love. Be kind, be gentle, be patient, be longsuffering, for if thy God was not longsuffering with thee, what chance would you have? 14. REPORTS OF READING 5081-1 F 31R1. 6/21/44 Letter: “I want to thank you for giving me the reading... In part your diagnosis states: 'We find that the head injury caused by the fall and strike is gradually growing worse. Unless there are measures taken...be such a pressure on the brain as to disable the body, possibly entirely.' To me, it seems that this diagnosis must be correct. I have had a sore head - right side only, for the past 2 years; there are usual disturbances accompanied by flashes of purple light, and sometimes headaches that seem to be tearing my life out by the roots. Last October I was examined by a neurosurgeon. X-rays of my head did not show that anything was wrong. I was told that I was suffering chiefly from imagination; to go back to work and 'snap out of it.' This, despite the fact that I had not been suffering from headaches at all before hurting my head. I did not believe that I was merely remote, so took up a study of Christian Science and tried to go back to work. Christian Science helped me mentally, but I could not retain a position for long at a time. The headaches and sore head keep me from working for any period. I took your diagnosis to the head of a mental hospital. I could not apply the treatment you suggest, so thought to work in the mental hospital a few hours daily in exchange for my board and treatment. The charge doctor ridiculed your report; he, too, told me to forget my condition. I have tried the best I know and have failed. I seem to be unable to learn how to contact God. He seems so very far away. It is often necessary to battle with the thought of taking my own life. Sometimes the unceasing soreness seems unendurable, but to do this would mean leaving a coward's record behind. Surely, there must be some other way? Would you be kind enough to make a suggestion? I felt that you have access to wisdom above that of the average man. Do you think that I should perhaps write to other Christian Science Practitioners - that they might heal me?”

R2. 7/7/44 Letter: “My impulse is to write and tell you something of the things that are so baffling to me; but I am not going to do so. God knows of my condition. He must, as my life is a tiny part of His greater Being. If this power does not see fit to relieve me from this torture, telling another human being will not help. I have a great deal of metaphysical literature. I find it sedative rather than curative in nature. But I am

thankful for the sedative, if nothing else, although it is becoming harder and harder to believe that I can attune myself with the power called God; that is, sufficiently to receive direct aid. However, I must count my blessings. God has led me to you, and you have diagnosed my condition. At least, I know where I stand. Even if medical doctors scoff at such a diagnosis and are unwilling to give me the treatment you suggest. We are told that God works in mysterious ways. Perhaps a turning point for the better will come soon. Your book 'A Search for God' may differ from the metaphysical literature that I have...thank you for your very kind gift offer... I am holding my own most of the time, and am able to take care of my support by working a few hours daily for my board. This arrangement keeps me from having to accept public charity. God is very good to allow me this much freedom.”

R3. 8/25/44 Letter: “It has at last been my good fortune to meet a medical man who is intelligently interested in the reading that you have been kind enough to give me. Unfortunately, the doctor cannot understand the terms in which you have couched your advice. He says that some of the terms do not have any similitude with known medical terms; that the wording is very ambiguous, not scientific and unreadable medically. In other words, 'it doesn't make any sense to him'. As the man is reputable and highly esteemed in his profession, I am wondering if perhaps some mistake has been made in the recording of the reading? Or, whether some inferior entity had dictated it. You have been most kind in your offers of assistance, Mr. Cayce. I did not wish to take advantage of your kindness further, but am afraid that the painful condition from which I am suffering, has strengthened my desire to seek help from any source. Because of this, I should like to ask whether it would be possible for me to have another reading. A reading that would perhaps designate the exact area of the thickening of the brain casement, as well as the position of the lesions that are said to be forming. R4. 10/16/44 Letter: “As you have not answered my letter, I fear that telling you of a medical doctor's comments re. the diagnosis you so kindly made for me, has distressed you. Please know that such was not my intention. I am in great pain a great deal of the time, and there are times when I do not feel like myself. Also my stepfather has turned me out, and suggested that I seek admittance in the Poorhouse; so earning a living with my head condition is something and sometimes a terrifying problem. I believe your diagnosis. There is something else that I should tell you. The doctors will not credit this either, despite x-ray proof. After striking my head, the severe blow, skull x-rays showed a shadow. This was diagnosed as a spicule of broken bone projecting inside the skull. There were no brain surgeons in our part of the country, so nothing could be done to help me. I could not afford to journey to a distant city in another province for help. Several months later, one night when in excruciating pain, I cried out to God with all my heart for deliverance. Almost instantly, there was a snapping round my head. I felt that the spicule of bone had gone back in place. The headaches continued after this, but I did not experience the sharp, pricking feeling that I used to have prior to

this occurrence. The next x-ray showed nothing to be wrong, proving my belief in divine aid. However, the doctors only ridiculed this. The latter x-rays were taken at a different hospital, and I was told that the first x-rays were probably read incorrectly. Being without money or position, I could not ask that the x-rays in both hospitals be compared. Your diagnosis as to a thickening of brain casement would easily be true, as a sharp piece of broken bone irritated the brain tissues of my head for several months. The doctors do not credit the extent of my illness, I believe, because of my attitude toward it. Because I have always been cheerful and have had a strong belief in God's ability to deliver me. This belief has enabled me to sleep without taking drugs and has been the dominating factor all through my illness. Stating that he has been recently in Davenport, Iowa, and came to Macon, Missouri, he at the same time has the impression that he may be in France and might be mistaken for a Frenchman. Asked if he has been reading the news, he insists that he has, but he if found to be without reliable information. He names General Pershing as commanding the armies and suggests that he may have read the classified ads and skipped the war news. He tells of hearing a Mr. Brakebill repeatedly telling him what to do. This party is said to live in Knoxville, but he is also thought to be here. His voice is thought to be heard coming from various parts of the building. He smilingly makes the statement that his conscience

Impressions occur that he has made others suffer, that he has in some way, broken the law, that someone has been killed, and that he, perhaps should be punished. General behavior is aimlessly detached and without purposeful motives. The problem represents tentatively a well established schizophrenic development. The Gold should be one grain to one ounce of distilled water. The larger plate (or the plate for each of these), would be attached, at the umbilical and lacteal duct center, which on this body would be the width of three fingers from the navel center directly to the right and four fingers up. 6. Recharge the Appliance every thirty days. Be careful that the plates are kept very clean and the connections are removed from the containers when not in use, and these connections also kept clean. The Appliance should be prepared or put together at least twenty minutes before it is attached to the body. 7. We would follow each of these treatments with a gentle massage along the cerebrospinal area, from around the ears down, with equal portions of Olive Oil and Tincture of Myrrh. R5. 7/60 Dr. Walter N. Pahnke's notes on Epilepsy cases from the Edgar Cayce records include this: Case [5204]. Given in 1944. 51 year old female. This case was classified [by me] in group 3. Symptoms were given as loss of memory, and some convulsions. The reading described the condition as being caused by clots on the brain capsule, produced by nervous shock from outside influences. After the patient died in 1949, a post mortem examination gave the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Cancer! Perhaps no other diagnosis is as feared. Yet many people fear the treatment options nearly as much as the disease itself – and rightly so. Conventional cancer therapy is toxic and dehumanizing – and, by and large, it doesn’t work. Its reliance on aggressive, invasive, and toxic methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy is based on the faulty paradigm that the body must be purged of cancer by any means necessary. This may have seemed reasonable in the early 1890s when William Halstead, M.D., performed the first radical mastectomy, but it has proven to be so wrong over the last century that continuing to adhere to it constitutes more fraud than honest mistake.

In this report, I am not going to tell you what you should do if you have cancer. Only you can make that decision. However, I will tell you what I would do if I had cancer. Equally important, I will tell you what I wouldn’t do. To begin with, I wouldn’t accept a diagnosis of cancer as a death sentence. I wouldn’t swallow everything my doctors told me. I would research treatment alternatives and become my own expert on my condition. In short, I would fight for my life by all means available to me.

The strategies that I would use to fight cancer are similar to strategies I would use to fight any serious illness such as heart disease or diabetes: dietary modifications, targeted nutritional supplements, and other natural therapies. The beauty of these therapies is that they can be used with whatever other treatment – conventional or alternative – you would choose to undergo. Together, they give your body a fighting chance to heal itself. Let’s first look at my anticancer diet.

My Cancer-Fighting Diet

Diet is a more powerful cancer therapy than most people realize. There is solid evidence that improved nutrition strengthens the immune system, slows the growth of tumors, and protects against metastasis (the spread of cancer). In a study conducted at the University of Victoria, B.C., researchers examined 200 cancer patients who had experienced “spontaneous regression” (an inexplicable cure or tumor reduction). A full 87 percent of these patients had made major changes in their diets.

If I had cancer, I would take this research to heart. I would switch to a primarily vegetarian diet and eliminate virtually all sources of saturated fat, including meat and dairy products, as well as trans fatty acids found in processed foods. Diets high in these saturated fat and trans fatty acids have been shown to stimulate cancer growth. At the same time, I would include healthy fats from cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and flaxseed. The omega-3 essential fatty acids in these foods are proven to protect against cancer.

In addition to small amounts of healthy fats, my anticancer diet would include moderate servings of protein, and abundant helpings of fiber-rich vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Plant foods are loaded with beneficial vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that slow cancer growth. I’d make a special effort to eat foods with known anticancer properties – soybeans, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli and cauliflower), leafy green and yellow-orange vegetables, berries, citrus and other fruits, garlic, and green tea.

I would also investigate macrobiotics. Macrobiotics is an Eastern tradition, defined by Michio Kushi, founder of the internationally famous Kushi Institute in Massachusetts, as “the universal way of health, happiness, and peace.” At its center is a “perfectly balanced” diet consisting of 50 percent whole cereal grains and 20 to 30 percent locally (and preferably organically) grown vegetables, supplemented with smaller amounts of beans, sea vegetables, soup, and occasionally white meat, fish, and fruit. Many studies have demonstrated the value of this kind of diet in treating cancer patients.

Nutritional Supplements Are a Must A healthy diet is only one tool in the fight against cancer. Equally important are

nutritional supplements. As a doctor, I know that cancer cells drain nutritional resources from the body and leave it in a state of malnutrition. Studies have shown that cancer patients have sub-optimal levels of a number of vital nutrients – particularly antioxidant vitamins and minerals.

If I had cancer, I would take a highpotency multivitamin and mineral supplement to ensure my body had the nutrients it needed in doses adequate to mount an attack on cancer cells. I would also take targeted supplements that have proven to strengthen the immune system and help the body fight back against cancer. Here are some of the most promising:

Selenium: The trace mineral selenium is one of our most powerful weapons against cancer. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1996, researcher Larry Clark, Ph.D., of the Arizona Cancer Center, presented convincing evidence that supplemental selenium could reduce cancer death rates by as much as 50 percent! In this study, Dr. Clark recruited 1,312 people with a history of skin cancer and divided them into two groups. Those in the first group were given 200 mcg of selenium per day, while those in the second group were given a look-alike placebo.

Though selenium had no effect on skin cancer recurrence in these patients, its effects on overall cancer incidence and mortality were dramatic – there was a 37 percent lower cancer rate and 50 percent fewer deaths from cancer in the selenium group. In fact, the results were so definitive that the study was stopped early, as researchers felt it would be unethical to deny the placebo group the benefits of this remarkable mineral.

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that facilitates the quick repair of free-radical damage to DNA – one of the primary causes of cancer. In addition to its own antioxidant properties, it is also essential for the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant and detoxifier produced by the body. But selenium’s ability to protect against cancer goes far beyond this. It actually causes cancer cells to self-destruct before they replicate, thereby short-circuiting cancer growth.

I take 200 mcg of selenium daily and strongly recommend that anyone concerned about cancer do the same. The form used in the study is high-selenium yeast, which is the most bioavailable form.

Vitamin C: Numerous studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C is associated with a decreased risk of cancer. But can it be effective in the treatment of cancer? Studies done by Scottish physician and researcher Ewan Cameron, M.D., provide compelling evidence that it can.

Malignant cells produce an enzyme called hyaluronidase that breaks up the “glue” that holds cells together. This allows cancerous cells to infiltrate healthy tissues. Dr. Cameron discovered that vitamin C inhibits the production of this enzyme, thereby strengthening the “cellular cement” and slowing cancer growth. When he gave high-dose vitamin C (an average of 10 grams per day) to cancer patients, he reported remarkable improvements in quality of life and survival time.

In addition to strengthening the “glue” between healthy cells, vitamin C enhances immune function and stimulates the formation of collagen that encapsulates or “walls off” tumors and prevents them from spreading. It also corrects the vitamin C deficiencies seen in most cancer patients, speeds surgical wound healing, enhances the effectiveness of some chemotherapy drugs, and reduces the toxicity of others.

Extra vitamin C is a must for cancer patients. If I had cancer, I would take 10,000-15,000 mg a day. High-dose vitamin C can cause gastrointestinal distress in some people, so it should be taken in small doses throughout the day, with food, to minimize that possibility. Some people tolerate buffered vitamin C better. Vitamin C may also be given intravenously.

Coenzyme Q10: Like vitamin C, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful anti-oxidant and cancer fighter. CoQ10 is most active in the mitochondria, the energy-producing factories in every cell. It functions like a spark plug within the mitochondria, igniting the creation of ATP, the basic unit of energy that runs your entire body.

Research has shown that cancer patients often have serious deficiencies of CoQ10. According to Dr. Karl Folkers, the “father of CoQ10” who began studying this nutrient back in the early 1960s, supplemental CoQ10 is extremely effective in reducing and eliminating tumors in some patients. In 1995, in conjunction with Danish researchers, Dr. Folkers published a study reporting complete tumor regression in five patients with advanced breast cancer using an average of 390 mg of CoQ10 per day.

I am convinced that CoQ10 is a valuable component of a comprehensive cancer treatment program. If I were facing cancer, I’d take 100-200 mg of this very safe

supplement, in an oil-soluble form, every day. CoQ10 requires a little fat to be best absorbed, so it is best taken with a meal.

Bovine and Shark Cartilage: One of the most exciting discoveries ever in cancer research was announced in the summer of 1998. Two drugs under development were able to dramatically shrink tumors in mice by choking off their blood supply. It may be years before these drugs, called endostatin and angiostatin, are ready for human use, but two natural agents that work in a similar way are available right now in your health food store – bovine and shark cartilage.

Research on cartilage dates back to the 1950s, when Harvard-trained physician John Prudden, M.D., discovered that bovine cartilage dramatically facilitated wound healing. Dr. Prudden later found that bovine cartilage inhibited angiogenesis, the growth of a network of blood vessels around a dormant tumor that allows it to grow and metastasize – the metastasize – the same mechanism by which the drugs endostatin and angiostatin are purported to work.

Attention turned to shark cartilage in the early 1990s. Sharks are unique in that they have no bones – their entire skeleton is cartilage. This ancient species also has an amazingly robust immune system, and unlike other animals, sharks rarely get cancer. Biochemist William Lane, Ph.D., was intrigued by Dr. Prudden’s work but thought shark cartilage might work even better as an anti-angiogenic agent.

After carrying out some early studies – and being given the run-around by the NCI – Dr. Lane teamed up with Charles Simone, M.D., a well-respected oncologist who utilizes nutritional therapies in his medical practice. In 1993 they set up a full-scale study of shark cartilage involving patients with advanced metastatic cancer, most of whom were considered to be “terminal” by conventional cancer doctors. Thirty-five of the patients went on an intensive shark cartilage program, along with dietary and lifestyle changes to enhance immune function, and over a third of these “terminally ill” patients showed improvement. Three patients experienced complete remission, and nine others experienced a significant reduction in their cancer. All of the patients reported improvements in overall quality of life, energy, pain, appetite, and mood.

The recommended dose for bovine cartilage is 9 grams per day. For shark, it is an average of 70 grams per day (1 gram per 2.2 pounds of body weight, or as much as 1 gram per pound in very advanced cases). Both bovine and shark cartilage come in capsules, but with the large amount of shark cartilage required, it is easier to mix a powder in juice or water three times a day – or to administer it by rectal enema. Because cartilage doesn’t actually kill tumors, but shrinks them by cutting off their blood supply, it should be taken indefinitely to avoid possible recurrence. The higher doses of shark cartilage may be lowered by half as improvement is noticed, usually after a minimum of 20 weeks, and then reduced to a maintenance dose of 8-10 grams daily.

Essiac Tea: In 1922, Canadian nurse Rene Caisse met a woman who told her she had been cured of cancer by drinking an Ojibway Indian tea which consisted of four herbs: burdock root, sheep’s sorrel, slippery elm, and Indian rhubarb root. Caisse made the tea for her aunt, who had inoperable cancer. Her aunt was completely cured, and Rene, naming the tea Essiac (Caisse spelled backwards), found her life’s work.

Rene Caisse never claimed that Essiac tea was a cancer cure, nor that it would help everyone. But neither should we dismiss it as just another old folk remedy – its history is too solid to ignore. The individual herbs in Essiac tea have all been shown in

recent years to have anticancer activity, and thousands of cancer patients in the past 70 years have claimed to have been helped by Essiac tea.

The most convenient and least expensive way to use Essiac tea is to buy the mixed herbs, brew your own, and store it in the refrigerator. Drink two ounces three times a day at least one hour before meals, and give it an initial trial of 12 consecutive weeks without interruption. Essiac tea is available in health food stores.

Hydrazine Sulfate: Most cancer patients don’t die from cancer. They die from cachexia – the energy loss, malnutrition, and wasting away that cancer causes – and from opportunistic infections and organ failure that accompany this weakened state. Cachexia results from the abnormal metabolism of cancer cells. Unlike healthy cells, cancer cells break down glucose for energy in the absence of oxygen, generating lactic acid as a byproduct. Lactic acid and other breakdown products are taken up by the liver and – with the expenditure of a great deal of energy – converted back into glucose. The glucose is again gobbled up by the cancer cells, more lactic acid is produced, and the energy drain is perpetuated.

Joseph Gold, M.D., an innovative physician who has been consistently hounded by the cancer establishment, has researched a safe, effective way to break this vicious energy-depleting cycle – hydrazine sulfate. This inexpensive chemical breaks the energy depleting cycle by blocking an enzyme that is required to convert lactic acid back into glucose. Instead of attacking a tumor, it simply deprives the tumor of the

energy needed to grow. Studies conducted in the former USSR and at the UCLA Medical Center have shown that hydrazine sulfate improves appetite, weight gain, energy levels, quality of life and, in terminal patients, survival time. It also appears to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The dosage of hydrazine sulfate Dr. Gold recommends is one 60 mg capsule before breakfast for the first three days; two capsules a day, one before breakfast and another before dinner, on days 4 to 6; and on day 7 and thereafter, three capsules a day, one before breakfast, one in the mid-afternoon, and one before bedtime with a snack. However, the dosage of hydrazine sulfate may vary with body weight, and should be discussed with your doctor. The course lasts six weeks and is then interrupted by a one- to two-week drug-free interval. This same cycle can be repeated as often as needed.

Alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers, and foods high in tyramine (cheese, raisins, cured foods like sausages, and fermented products like yogurt and miso) should be

strictly avoided while taking hydrazine sulfate, as they can interfere with the drug’s effectiveness and cause significant side effects and sickness.

Amygdalin (Laetrile): Amygdalin (also known as vitamin B17 or laetrile) has been the subject of more controversy than any other single anticancer agent. This naturally occurring substance is found in over 1,200 plants, and is especially prevalent in the seeds of apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, and apples. In the body, amygdalin acts like a “smart bomb,” breaking down into substances that selectively target cancer cells while leaving normal cells alone.

Studies carried out by biochemist Kanematsu Sugiura, Ph.D., at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the 1970s showed that amygdalin stopped the growth of small tumors and could dramatically reduce the spread of breast cancer in laboratory animals. However, the results of these studies were not made public by Memorial Sloan-Kettering. In fact, officials there set out to discredit this research. When one experiment failed to confirm Sugiura’s findings, the public affairs department was told to instruct the media that amygdalin had been “proven” worthless. What they didn’t say is that this experiment had used 1/40 of the dose used in Sugiura’s successful studies – hardly a fair trial of a potentially valuable cancer-fighting compound.

Likewise, a widely publicized 1981 clinical trial “proving” amygdalin to be worthless had serious flaws. This trial was carried out at the Mayo Clinic, with the support of the National Cancer Institute, among terminally ill cancer patients who had already had their immune systems devastated by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. These patients were unlikely to benefit from any therapy. To make matters more difficult, the substance used was not amygdalin (laetrile), but isoamygdalin, a relatively inactive form of amygdalin. Despite these challenges, the cancers of 70 percent of the patients stabilized during the three weeks that they received intravenous amygdalin. (Oral amygdalin did not halt the progression of cancer.)

While the cancer establishment continues its criticism of amygdalin, this natural compound remains one of the most widely used supplements among alternative physicians. Although it can be dangerous if too much is taken, at recommended intravenous and oral doses, it is safe and appears to be an effective anticancer agent, especially for improving well-being and relieving cancer pain. Apricot kernels or laetrile capsules can be ordered by mail. The usual dose is 250 to 1,000 mg or 10 to 20 apricot kernels daily.

Ukrain: Ukrain is a unique product consisting of an herb called greater celandine (Chelidonium majus) combined with a cancer drug called thiotepa. Greater celandine has a long history of use as a folk treatment for cancer, while thiotepa was the first anticancer drug produced by the German pharmaceutical industry. Although each of these compounds is highly irritating and toxic on its own, the combination is remarkable for its ability to destroy cancer cells while leaving normal cells unharmed.

Ukrain is the brainchild of Dr. J. Wassyl Nowicky, who named it after his native country (without the final “e”) and unveiled it at the 13th International Congress of Chemotherapy in Vienna in 1983. For a therapy that stemmed from folk cancer treatments, it has an impressive body of research behind it. In studies conducted at the National Cancer Institute, Ukrain was tested against 60 different human cancer cell lines and completely inhibited the growth of cancer in 57 of them, including leukemia, melanoma, and cancers of the lung, colon, brain, ovary, breast, and kidney.

Clinical studies of this anticancer agent are equally impressive. In a 10- year clinical study conducted by scientists at Dr. Nowicky’s Ukrain Anti- Cancer Institute in Austria, 93 percent of patients starting treatment at the earliest stage of tumor development (no metastases) experienced a total remission. In patients with minimal metastasis, the success rate was a still remarkable 72 percent. Even in patients with advanced metastatic cancer (considered “terminal” by most physicians), the success rate was 30 percent.

Ukrain works on several fronts to selectively destroy cancer cells. It inhibits DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis in malignant cells and reduces these cells’ oxygen consumption to zero, effectively killing them. Like shark and bovine cartilage, it also inhibits the growth of blood vessels around a tumor, starving the tumor of nutrients and helping to prevent the spread of cancer beyond the original site. And it fortifies the immune system by increasing the number of T helper cells, which coordinate key immune activities, and macrophages, which seek and destroy abnormal cells.

Over 120 scientific papers on Ukrain have been published by scientists from 16 countries and 47 universities and research institutes. Investigation of Ukrain continues not just in Austria, where it is produced, but at many institutions in Canada, France, Germany the Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand, and even Swaziland. Unfortunately, American oncologists are far less open to the potential value of this anticancer compound. Only a handful of alternative practitioners in the United States offer Ukrain therapy. (See Resources sidebar.)

Keep Searching: The therapies that I have described above are the ones that, in my opinion, would offer me the best chance of success in fortifying my immune system and helping me to combat cancer without destroying my body in the process. In contrast to the invasiveness of surgery, the toxic brew of chemotherapy drugs, and the destructive effects of radiation, these therapies have an impressive record of safety. What’s more, countless patients with “terminal” cancer have used these therapies to beat the odds and are living proof that “cut, burn, and poison” are not the only ways to combat cancer.

If I were battling cancer, I wouldn’t stop with what I know now. I would continue to search for effective, nontoxic therapies that would give me a fighting chance. I would likely turn to Ralph Moss, Ph.D., probably the most knowledgeable writer in the world on alternative therapies for cancer. His books are a much-needed antidote to the mainstream media’s glorification of conventional cancer therapy. Through a service called The Moss Reports, he also provides personalized recommendations on the best alternative cancer treatments worldwide, depending on the type and severity of cancer.

I would consult People Against Cancer, a nonprofit organization that provides a comprehensive counseling service called the Alternative Therapy Program. It includes a review of your medical records by a network of doctors who use alternative therapies.

Finally, I would look into cancer treatment clinics using therapies that promote the body’s innate healing powers rather than devastate the immune system. Here are two of the most promising clinics that I would explore.

Burzynski’s Antineoplastons: Antineoplaston therapy is a remarkable cancer treatment devised by Stanislaw Burzynski, M.D., and administered at his clinic in Houston, Texas. I firmly believe that antineoplastons are among the most important breakthroughs of the century in cancer therapy for one reason: they address cancer at its origins. Administered by mouth or intravenously, these small protein compounds enter

cells and alter specific functions of their genes. Some activate tumor suppressor genes that cause cancer cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), while others turn off oncogenes that would otherwise cause unbridled cell growth – the very definition of cancer. Dr. Burzynski recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Research Institute and the Burzynski Clinic. There was much to celebrate, for since opening his clinic, he has extended the lives of thousands of cancer patients, many of them with aggressive, “incurable,” or highly advanced cancer. Dr. Burzynski’s success rate is especially remark-able considering the types of cancer he is most closely associated with – virulent brain tumors that conventional medicine is powerless to treat. In one trial of patients with brain tumors, survival, complete remission, and partial remission rates were seven times greater with antineoplastons than have been documented in the published studies of patients with similar tumors treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

If you are interested in pursuing antineoplaston treatment, be aware that the FDA controls who gets to use the therapy and who doesn’t. Patients with malignant brain tumors or lowgrade lymphoma may begin therapy as soon as they are diagnosed, but those with other types of cancer are often required by the FDA to first undergo radiation or chemotherapy. Patients must be seen in the Burzynski Clinic in Houston, and may be required to stay in Houston for two to four weeks for daily antineoplaston administration and evaluation. It is an expensive therapy but is sometimes covered by insurance.

Hoxsey’s Herbs: The Hoxsey therapy is one of the oldest alternative therapies for cancer. A self-trained healer, Harry Hoxsey used herbal formulas passed on by his great-grandfather to treat cancer. Some of these formulas were applied to the skin in order to selectively destroy cancerous tissue, while others were designed to be taken internally.

These tonics were believed to balance the body and create a healing environment in which the immune system is strengthened and tumors die.

Hoxsey established a clinic in Dallas, Texas, in the 1920s, where he had good success treating cancer patients. Despite popular support for his treatment, the conventional medical community dismissed Hoxsey as a charlatan and he was repeatedly arrested for practicing medicine without a license. In one twoyear period, he was arrested over 100 times! Eventually, his treatment was banished from the U.S. When Hoxsey retired, he passed the torch to his nurse, Mildred Nelson, R.N., who established the Bio-Medical Center in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1963. It was the first alternative medical treatment facility catering to American citizens outside the United States.

Since its establishment, the Bio-Medical Center has treated thousands of cancer patients. The types of cancer that seem to respond most favorably include melanoma, chronic leukemia, lymphoma, and other types of skin cancer. Patients with cancers of the lung, colon, prostate, cervix, and breast also report a good response. Recent research leaves no doubt that Hoxsey’s formulas, however strange their origins, do indeed contain many plant substances with therapeutic activity. In fact, scientists have identified antitumor activity in all but three of Hoxsey’s plants, including burdock root, red clover, barberry, licorice root, and prickly ash. When patients are confronted with a diagnosis of cancer, reason often flies out the window. At the very time they should be making calm, well considered, educated decisions, they’re paralyzed by shock, fear, and an extreme sense of urgency. Many patients in this situation rush headlong into whatever course of action their physician recommends. They do so not so much because they have faith in the effectiveness of current cancer therapies, but because they’re too scared to do anything else. Be an “exceptional” patient, even if you’re labeled “difficult.” Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for documentation, and don’t be reluctant to question what you don’t understand or disagree with. Absolutely get a second opinion, and possibly a third and a fourth. I know it takes courage to question your doctor’s recommendations and even more courage to reject them. Don’t forget, it’s his or her professional opinion. But it’s your life.

Dr. Burzynski discovered peptides and amino acid derivatives in the human body that control cancer, not by destroying cancer cells but by correcting them. He named these substances antineoplastons.

Antineoplastons are nontoxic substances that have shown to be a promising therapy for difficult-to-treat brain cancers, low- and intermediate-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and many common types of solid tumors. Residents of most other countries must receive FDA permission to ship antineoplastons to that country. All patients are treated on an outpatient basis. The treatment is self-administered and normally free of serious side effects.

Beating the Odds

Five in one hundred were the best odds the doctors could offer a sixty-one-year-old man who in 1971 entered a hospital of the University of Oregon medical school with weakness, extreme weight loss, difficulty swallowing, and troubled breathing. His disease had progressed to the point that he could hardly swallow his own saliva, let alone solid food. And the devastating result, a drop in weight to 98 pounds, had left him too weak to function. Unfortunately, he would probably never get to see his sixty-second birthday. Instead, he would most likely die from the carcinoma that resided in his throat.

In cases such as this, it is sometimes better to withhold therapy rather than put the patient through unnecessary pain and suffering with little chance of significant improvement. Many times the patient personally confronts this dilemma and is asked to make the final decision alone. But in this particular instance, the doctors decided for him and attempted to mount a last-ditch effort in his behalf. This time the effort paid off.

The patient was prescribed a course of radiation therapy in the hope that his tumor would at least shrink and thereby allow the ingestion of solid food. A total cure was not at all expected because of the advanced stage of the illness, but a reduction in the size of the tumor was hoped for. That would provide the outside possibility of some degree of life extension, be it weeks, months, or maybe a year. The chances were slim indeed, but hope was not abandoned. Therapy was begun.

In addition to the radiation, a completely new form of therapy was employed in this case. The patient was instructed to visualize the process by which the tumor cells were being destroyed. He was asked to view the radiation as millions of miniature bullets, striking and killing all malignant cells in their path, zapping the weaker, more vulnerable parasites in preference to the surrounding normal, healthy cells that were much stronger and able to handle the devastating radiation.

Far more important than this, the patient was requested to visualize the ultimate means of tumor cell annihilation-the complete battle between the malignant enemy and the body’s natural defense against cancer. He was told how his white blood cells would converge on and consume the dying or dead tumor cells, how they would carry the defeated enemy from the internal battleground to the ever-waiting liver and kidneys, where the remnants of the once-threatening foe would be flushed from the body forever. He was told to visualize a gradual reduction in the size of the tumor and his return to full health when the cancer had been completely eliminated. He was told to envision health in place of illness, life instead of death.

What happened next was completely beyond the expectations or even the imagination of the attending physicians. Certainly they had all seen improvement in terminal cancer patients, but nothing quite like this. The radiation treatments were working much better than anticipated and with hardly any deleterious side effects to the normal tissue of the mouth and throat. The tumor was shrinking so rapidly that midway through the therapy, the patient once again was able to eat. Slowly but steadily, he began to regain his strength and weight as his cancer progressively vanished before the eyes of his hospital physicians. Within two more months, he showed absolutely no signs of any cancer and had reentered society a new man with a new skill.

Since the visualization had worked so well on the cancer, the man decided to attempt to relieve his arthritis through the same technique. He pictured the white blood cells of his body first preparing, then repaving the surfaces of the joints of his arms and legs. He imagined them carrying away all the debris of previous inflammations, patching any defects, leaving the joints shiny and slippery smooth. He envisioned the youthful, healthy condition that had existed before the attacks. Sure enough, he restored the joints to good function, and, like the cancer, the arthritis slowly resolved.

Next this man revamped his sex life. Unable to have intercourse for twenty years because of impotence, he applied the visualization therapy to improving his sexual potency. Within a few weeks, he was restored to full sexual activity. Here was yet another overwhelming example of his ability to willfully influence his physical health through mental imagery.

The case as presented here is completely documented and portrayed faithfully and accurately. It comes from the annals of 0. Carl Simonton and appears in a more complete form in his book Getting Well Again, a highly recommended guide to visualization therapy and an excellent source of information on stress and cancer. Other cases and examples of successful visualization have been recorded by numerous other doctors and researchers, notably Jeanne Achterberg in her book Imagery in Healing; Elmer Green, Alyce Green, and Patricia A. Norris at the Menninger Foundation; Larry LeShan in his years of clinical work in New York; J. H. Schultz in the study entitled “Autogenic Training;” plus many others including the French gynecologist Fernand Lamaze of the Lamaze childbirth fame and Michael Samuels in his terrific books Be Well, Seeing With the Mind’s Eye, and The Well Body Book.

Relaxation And Mental ImageryRelaxation and mental imagery, as they apply to physical healing, are intended to

put the participant back in touch with his or her feelings, sensations, and bodily perceptions. The two techniques help to provide an understanding of the workings of the mind-body connection and the influence of beliefs, both positive and negative, on physical and mental health. Mental imagery can be used to create positive beliefs that ultimately lead to positive health. But before you can initiate the technique of visualization, you must achieve true relaxation of the mind and body.

One of the principle functions of relaxation exercises is to put the mind and body at ease. This is accomplished through the elimination of stress so that a state of deep internal relaxation extends from the conscious mind to the physical body. Breathing becomes slower and deeper, the heart rate subsides, and the muscles of the body release their tension. Associated with all of these events is a change in wave rhythms in the brain, proving once again that the mind can have a direct effect on involuntary physical functions.

In terms of attacking cancer, the relaxation has a further benefit; it reduces the tension that is associated with the diagnosis of malignancy. If you are a cancer patient, you need not be reminded of the internal anguish that arose when you were given the shocking news that you have cancer. If you are not a cancer patient, consider your likely response to the diagnosis: feelings of anger, frustration, and remorse; fear of the pain and suffering; the thought of death itself. Compound these reflections with family and financial concerns, and you have buckets brimming with worry.

This is why relaxation procedures are so important to the cancer patient. They greatly help to eliminate the intense feelings that parallel the disease and provide a more peaceful mental and physical environment that allows healing messages to arise from the inner self. These messages change the perception of the patient so that the illness and the circumstances surrounding it can go to work for, instead of against, him or her. With a clear and relaxed mind, the patient can reflect on past and future events. A true communion with one’s self can transpire, and a precise plan for dealing with life’s problems can take shape. The patient is placed in a position from which to direct the course of not only the illness but life events as well. Now add the process of mental imagery, and you have the setting for some remarkable happenings, including the remission of cancer.

It is important to note that relaxation as it is discussed here does not refer to the easygoing activities associated with recreation, rest, and recuperation. Therapeutic relaxation does not mean sipping a glass of white wine and watching the afternoon soaps or popping a frosty beer and viewing the evening ball game. While these are certainly not stressful activities, neither are they associated with the deep relaxation response that leads to real stress reduction and the preparation for healing. True therapeutic relaxation is a state of mind and body achieved through the use of specific techniques that relieve tension and stress. Real relaxation is the first step in breaking that horrible negative loop of ill feelings generating illness generating ill feelings. Deep relaxation is therapeutic in the true sense of the word.

Here’s one of many techniques that produces the desired state. First, before attempting relaxation, seclude yourself from all surrounding distractions-no telephone, no television, no radio, nothing but you and your consciousness. You must make an absolute commitment to dedicate five to ten minutes of your undivided time to achieve a state of relaxation that sets the stage for the practice of visualization. When you are ready, you can employ the following guidelines to assist you in your quest for complete inner peace and tranquility:

1. Find a quiet place with soft lighting and comfortable seating.2. Make yourself cozy, either sitting or lying down. Close your eyes.3. Concentrate on your, breathing, taking several slow deep inspirations and soft

prolonged expirations.4. Concentrate on your face. Isolate and dissolve away any tension that you feel.

Notice how the relaxation spreads to other parts of your body.5. Move your thoughts to the muscles of your neck, and relax them. Next, your

shoulders. Then your arms. Continue this way until you have. successfully melted away the tension of your entire body.

6. Always return to your breathing if you lose concentration. Focus on the slow movement of air in and out of the lungs, the movement of the chest and the abdomen, the subtle sound of respiration.

7. When you have relaxed your entire body, remain quietly in the same location and position for a few minutes. Continue to concentrate on your slow, steady breathing.

8. After the few minutes pass, slowly open your eyes and readjust to your surroundings.

9. Now you are ready to resume normal activities or engage in mental imagery. The entire process should take 10-15 minutes.

This series of steps represents just one technique of achieving a state of relaxation; several others can be used. If you elect to practice mental imagery as an adjunct therapy, study other methods of relaxation and choose the one best suited to your nature. Regardless of which method you choose, you must arrive at the same desired goal of stress elimination, which prepares you for a session of mental imagery.

The Visualization ProcessThe next step is the actual process of visualization – mentally altering

expectations of future events by forming an image of what is desired. For example, in Olympic high-diving competition, the participants are taught to visualize their dives before they actually perform them. By forming a mental image of the perfect plunge, the athlete psychically programs his or her body to duplicate the picture seen by the mind’s eye. The result: dives that are better and scores that are higher. Likewise, golfers visualize their shots before they swing their clubs, and dancers mentally perform their routines before ever entering the stage. Extensive psychological testing has shown the value of mental imagery techniques in all fields of activity, and experts have extended its use to cancer therapy.

Like the patient in the case study at the beginning of this chapter, you can learn to use visualization to destroy and eliminate cancer or any other disease that strikes you. Even if you are not ill, you can use mental imagery to maintain well-being and good health. The technique is universal; the application is individual.

For cancer patients, the technique will most certainly be life-extending and possibly life-saving. Visualizing the destruction of a tumor directs the internal forces of natural defense and greatly enhances their effectiveness. With positive, powerful images, the mind sends concrete messages to the body, messages that command tumor cell annihilation and the restoration of good health.

The visualization can be realistic. You can view tumor cells and white blood cells in their natural forms, imagining their struggle as it actually occurs within the body. Or you can picture the entire scene symbolically, with tumor cells portrayed as tiny, scared fish schooled in a group that lacks direction, and white blood cells as fierce white sharks attacking with big teeth and ferocious appetites, devouring and digesting their timid prey. Other forms abound. The tumor cells can be visualized as frightened mice and blood cells as hungry hawks. Or use snakes and wolves, frogs and alligators. The examples are endless, and the choice is up to you. In any case, envision the cancer as the weaker form and the blood cells as the stronger, victorious opponents.

According to Jeanne Achterberg and supported by the research of other scientists and therapists, the characteristics of the images go far to predict the outcome of the therapy. For example, when asked to imagine the color of their tumors, patients described a host of colors from yellow to black. It was later determined that the softer colors of blue and green were associated with less intense feelings about the cancer and a poorer prognosis, whereas the colors of red and black evoked stronger convictions that led to more positive antitumor action. These results were recorded by R. L. Trestman of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Furthermore, when patients viewed the elements of the natural defense system in vague or conflicting terms, the course of the therapy was less than desirable. White blood

cells represented by snowflakes or clouds connoted a weak image of the immune system and also a frail image of self. How could these imaginary warriors ever destroy a malignant enemy? White blood cells represented by wolves and sharks, certainly more powerful forms, were linked with positive therapeutic results, but they were not the best images to associate with the cells of the immune system. The best forms, according to Achterberg, were “archetypal figures who fought for God and country and who were protectors of the people, such as Sir Richard or the knights of the Round Table. These images are not only powerful, they are also pure, righteous champions of good and just causes.

When the cancer was viewed as strong, overpowering, or irrepressible, a poor outcome was predicted. Cancer images like coal, crabs, or insects were almost impossible to overcome and consequently not well controlled, destroyed, or eliminated. Patients dealt with weaker cancer forms, like helpless, timid animals or soft mutable objects, in a more positive fashion and achieved much better results.

Still another component is generally added to the mental drama-the therapeutic agent being received by the patient. Chemotherapy is seen as poison that further weakens the tumor cells but not the white blood cells; radiation is seen as tiny bullets or laser beams that also aid in the destruction of the cancer. Again, it’s up to the patient to decide exactly what images make the most sense or which ones are the easiest to conceive, and then to form a mental picture and act out the scenario.

As an example, consider the following scene, and mentally visualize the good characters performing their life-saving functions. Think of the cancer as fragile and helpless. Think of the white blood cell characters as strong and noble, fighting for your survival. Then envision the drama that will end in the destruction and elimination of the cancer through the efforts of your natural defenses.

This example is a forceful image. The chemotherapeutic liquid, has drugged and weakened the tiny helpless bait fish, the tumor cells, making them even more vulnerable for the great white sharks (the white blood cells). Imagine the attack of the sharks as they converge on the helpless fish and devour every one of them, digesting the remains of their engulfed bodies until nothing is left.

Now think back on the function of white blood cells and the process of phagocytosis as described in Chapter 3, “What You Need to Know About Cancer.” Remember how macrophages engulf and digest their natural enemies: bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. This is the process you should envision in your mental dramas between imaginary characters of good and evil, the white blood cell sharks and the tiny, fragile, malignant bait fish.

Example #2:VISUALIZED IMAGE #2This second image is more powerful than the first. In addition to a strong

portrayal of the white blood cell images and a weak representation of the cancer images, there is also the association of good and evil in the two sets of characters. The knights in shining armor are protected from the falling rain of chemotherapeutic drugs, chemicals that poison the cancerous enemy. The knights represent a force of goodness that is ready to overcome the evil group of weak and confused snakes.

Now play out this drama in your own mind. Consider the conclusion. The gallant knights gather all the helpless evil snakes and systematically destroy them all until the kingdom is once again safe, purged of all the forces that bring illness and destruction to the realm. In like manner, the forces of the GOOD SYSTEM of the body contain and destroy the tumor cells to which they are directed by the mind.

The process of visualization should be controlled by therapists who have appropriate training. Under their instruction, the patient is encouraged to assume a comfortable position, generally a reclining pose, and listen to a relaxation message provided by the therapist or a tape recording. Following this message,

the therapists suggest a brief description of the disease process (how the tumor came into being) and the healing process (how the natural defense system of the body will eliminate the tumor). You have already learned this information in Chapters 3 and 4. Use it to increase your understanding of both processes so that you can increase the potency of your visualization.

The therapist then asks the patient to imagine the healing process at work, just as you were asked to visualize the outcome of the two different symbolic dramas between the sharks and the fish and the knights and the animals. During an actual session, no

specific scene is drawn for the patient. All representations are left entirely up to the imagination of the listener, but the therapist may question what the cancer looks like or how the immune cells will destroy it. The intention is only to guide the patient in the right direction and stimulate thoughts that will assist in the creation of positive images. The exact characters the patient envisions will mirror the patient’s feelings about the illness and him or herself. The visualization script the patient acts out will reflect his or her understanding of the healing process and the patient’s ability to control it. These aspects of the visualization process will determine the effectiveness of the treatment and are best left to the patient’s imagination.

A YOUNG PATIENTUnless the individual creates personally meaningful characters, the entire exercise

may be useless, and the patient may become frustrated by the experience. It is only through a strong association and relationship with the good forces of the natural defense system that the patient will be able to project him or herself into the struggle. To appreciate the value of the patient’s input in the visualization script, consider a case study from the Menninger Foundation as discussed by Patricia Norris in one of the foundation’s publications.

In this case, the patient was a nine-year-old boy who awoke one morning with a numbness in his left arm. Initially, this insensitivity was dismissed as nothing more than discomfort caused by sleeping in the wrong position. But the symptom persisted, and one day the child awoke with complete paralysis of his arm and was taken for immediate medical care.

His doctors didn’t take long to diagnose the problem. With the aid of a CAT scan, a specialized three-dimensional form of x-ray, they determined that the young boy harbored a malignant tumor within the right side of his brain. Inoperable by virtue of its size and placement, the astrocytoma was composed of brain cells that had somehow gone wild and grown unrestricted, displacing normal brain tissue and compressing the vital area in the brain that controlled the child’s arm.

Something had to be done quickly, or the tumor would continue to grow and compress additional brain tissue, producing more severe symptoms and ultimately taking the boy’s life. Since the tumor was considered inoperable, instead of surgery, the child was given a full course of radiation therapy, the next best treatment for astrocytoma. He was given all that he could tolerate, and when the regimen was complete, he was sent home with the hope that the symptoms would abate.

But as time passed, the worst possibilities were realized. His symptoms did not diminish. Instead, they continued to increase in severity to involve his left leg and most of the left side of his body. Since chemotherapy is of questionable benefit in cases of astrocytoma, and no more radiation could be tolerated, his doctors said they had done all they could, that they had exhausted all traditional modes of therapy, that they had nothing else to offer.

Fortunately for the child, his parents had something else to offer. They were aware of a revolutionary new cancer treatment, a program that involved the patient in his own therapy – a self-controlled plan to mobilize the body’s natural defense system to stage an internal fight against malignancy. To assist their son in his attempt to overcome his illness, the parents obtained one of the mental imagery tapes made by the Cancer Research and Treatment Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and with the professional guidance

available at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, the young boy was introduced to a special form of “mental” cure, a cure on which he staked his life.

After several attempts to use the relaxation and imagery tape, the child became discontented with the program and decided to make one of his own, using his own visual scenario. Since he was an avid fan of Star Trek and other space adventures, he decided to program his ego as a space squadron commander who was in charge of protecting the galaxy (his brain) from an invading alien (the tumor). His natural weapons, the white blood cells of his body, were represented by lasers and torpedoes, which constituted the arsenal controlled by the fleet of fighter planes. Mentally, he controlled those weapons; psychologically, he bombed his tumor.

In addition to this fantasy form of abstract visualization, concrete visualization was also employed, and in time this became the main component of the routine. Instead of conceptualizing rocket launchers and torpedoes, the child was instructed to envision the actual white blood cells that the imaginary weapons represented. He was taught to picture the destruction of the tumor by the ever-present and ever-hungry blood cells, and he often represented them in drawings as large balls with round mouths lined with many teeth. He saw hundreds of them attacking and eating up the tumor until nothing was left.

Also, at the onset of the imagery training, the child was taught basic techniques of biofeedback, such as warming the hands to ninety-seven degrees, deep muscle relaxation, and maintaining very low muscular tension for extended periods of time. These techniques were extremely important, not only to allow the child to relax and to dissipate his anxiety, but also to demonstrate that the mind and the body are connected. This realization was naturally extended to the visualization. After all, if the mind could direct warmth to the hands and extend relaxation to the muscles, why couldn’t it direct white blood cells to the tumor and effectively eradicate it?

Then a final component of the mental therapy was drawn into play: the unconscious. As a final and continuing step in the treatment, the therapist at the Menninger Foundation explained to the child that what he had envisioned during his imagery sessions was really a process that occurred naturally. Although he was consciously directing this natural defense mechanism and enhancing its effectiveness, it was always at work, fighting the tumor day and night, aided by an internal commander who was always on duty.

This subtle but powerful suggestion was of the utmost importance because it allowed the white blood cells to continue their battle even when the child was not consciously controlling them. They were directed in their effort by an unconscious force similar to a posthypnotic suggestion, and continuously reinforced by the child’s own volition. But would this therapy really be able to help the child in his fight for life, or did it merely distract the child from feeling despair and doom?

Immediately following the radiation treatments, the child’s condition took a turn for the worse, and his clinical picture continued to deteriorate during the first few months of mental imagery training. Of necessity he was put into a leg brace, which he required in order to walk, and he needed assistance to arise whenever he fell. His future looked bleak, so his doctors ordered a second CAT scan in order to better determine what was actually occurring inside his head. The results were discouraging; the tumor had grown much larger.

At this point the child was facing his own mortality and began to question those around him about the possibility of imminent death. His father was truthful and did not negate the possibility but remained positive and supportive. His therapist reduced the question to a choice: Did the child choose to live or die? That was the real point.

The child chose life.He worked harder than ever with his mental imagery and received constant

encouragement from his parents and therapist. They never lost confidence in the ultimate success of the therapy, even though the odds were certainly stacked against the child. He fought the tumor with a playful spirit and a oneness of purpose until suddenly things began to turn his way.

Physically he started to improve. His leg strengthened, and he could arise without assistance whenever he fell. His arm improved, affording more use. And his overall health improved to project a much better appearance. Finally one day, he announced that he could no longer “see” the tumor. It was completely destroyed. No matter where he searched within the confines of his brain, he was unable to locate the enemy invader, the thief of life. Still he continued with his mental imagery and envisioned his white blood cells searching endlessly for any stragglers that might have escaped eradication. Although he never pictured the tumor again and had full faith that it indeed was gone, he still desired some real proof that it was totally demolished. A third CAT scan was ordered.

Although it was much delayed because the physicians thought it was unnecessary, a series of physical problems and falls that plagued the child during this period of high anticipation eventually forced the issue, and the CAT scan was ordered. After the full series was completed, the news was released. There was no sign of the tumor anywhere. Without any further treatments, without chemotherapy and without surgery, the tumor had been eradicated. The child was in remission.

Even though his doctors were skeptical and felt that the visualization had played no role in the cure, the young patient, his parents, and therapist all knew otherwise. They had suffered through the shortcomings of traditional treatments, observed the physical deterioration that followed the radiation therapy, and witnessed the remarkable comeback and miraculous cure that occurred with the biofeedback and visualization techniques. They rejoiced in their success.

It was the child who really understood what had happened. As he put it, the radiation softened the tumor and made it easier for him to destroy it. Be that as it may, and this is probably the closest view to the truth, it was the child who went the extra distance on his own, crossing the finish line to win the race and his life. He truly “masterminded” his own miracle by pushing the imaginary buttons of an imaginary game that took place within his brain.
