One wonders how, on one hand, many of our MPs are wringing sanctimonious hands where the Fiji situation is concerned, yet are prepared to ride roughshod over what is pretty obviously the will of most of the people our MPs claim to represent.

I refer to the question of parents’ freedom to discipline their chil-dren by a sharp smack where all else fails.

What we are seeing is, once again, the idea that The State knows better than parents, and in fact, parents are less able than are State run organisations.

What a turnaround for our Prime Minister, when she has led people to believe she would not be in favour of the Green’s bill, but is not only now sidling up to the Greens, but forcing all her MPs to block vote, despite many ap-parently being against the change. No conscience voting allowed, as she knows jolly well that the bill would fail.

The same appears to be true of

the Maori Party - their leader mak-ing out that making his party vote for the new bill is “leadership”, despite apparently knowing that most of those who voted them in to power are not in favour of the change.

In the discussion re smacking, people in favour of the new law cannot seem to discern the differ-ence between child discipline and child abuse.

The passing of legislation is never going to stop child abuse.

With the banning of strapping in schools, for many young people whose parental discipline was pretty lax, school discipline was the only discipline they experi-enced.

No wonder so many young people get put out of schools, and teachers have increasing problems with pu-pil behaviour.

I fear for the future of families and young people growing up. One wonders what form the next attack on families will take.

Political hypocrisy

Ratepayers of the Waipa are blissfully unaware that money from their rates could have helped convicted pack rapist Peter McNa-mara and his partner of 14 years, Joanne Percy conceive their con-troversial baby and fund McNama-ra’s expensive leave from prison to be at the birth.

H2O is the company they owned together until McNamara’s con-viction and H2O is the company Council has entrusted Te Awamutu Events Centre to.

I am unbelievably angry, as are others I have spoken to, that our Council feels that it is acceptable to conduct business with this com-pany.

I will be shouting loudly all the way to election day about this.

Storm fells trees throughout areaKawhia power cut for three hours - Waipa Networks staff handle 150 fault calls

High winds that swept up the North Island on Wednesday hit the Te Awamutu area late afternoon, causing damage to the power network and customer service lines.

There were reports of felled trees and tree limbs throughout the district. There were network outages on the Pukeatua, Ohaupo and Kawhia feed-

ers.Kawhia experienced the longest outage of approximately three hours.“Despite these outages, the network itself fared reasonably well given the

severity of the storm,” says Ray Milner, CEO of Waipa Networks.“Most of the incidents our staff had to attend involved damage to indi-

vidual service lines.”About 150 individual fault calls were received from affected customers

meaning staff were kept busy well into the night. With such a large number of faults, many sites had temporary repairs

carried out with Waipa Networks staff revisiting them on Friday morning when conditions had improved.”

LIMBS from large oak trees at Pirongia Cemetery fell across fences onto headstones late Thursday afternoon as the storm ripped through the Waikato. Fortunately there was little damage caused to the headstones or graves. 079073A,BD

The Arawata Street Farmers and Craft Market is expanding, with the addition of a second hand goods section.

Spokesman, Ken George says there has been continual inter-est for stalls to sell second hand goods.

The monthly market has been operating successfully in St John’s Church Hall and carpark over the past 15 months - next one this Saturday.

“Community fundraising garage sales in the hall on market days have been suc-cessful, as have free community fundraising group stalls,” Mr George says.

“So far 17 community groups have benefi tted from having stalls.”

Money raised from all stall hire charges goes towards St John’s Church Mission and charity donations.

Mr George says extensive advertising on approach roads into Te Awamutu has been suc-cessful in attracting out of town visitors to market days.

“On site music, barbecues, morning teas and an oppor-tunity shop have proved to be popular attractions. The market is a great place to buy and sell your trash or treasure.”

By Cathy AsplinWhen you think of a home-

less person, you probably don’t envisage someone like John Alexander.

There’s no shaggy hair, unkempt appearance or un-washed state.

In fact if you passed him in the street you would have no idea he has been reduced to begging for food and sleeping in his car.

Mr Alexander separated from his wife and decided to leave their home, but wanted to stay close by for his chil-dren’s sake.

So he packed up his posses-sions and left with his wee dog, Bruno.

The problem was where to go and how to survive?

He had been driving trac-tors but was laid off, had no money and no family in town.

He came to Te Awamutu fi ve months ago from the Bay of Islands, but he didn’t have money for petrol to travel north again and didn’t want to be away from his children.

So he headed to WINZ to apply for a benefi t.

“But I was told that if I don’t have a mailing address I can’t get any help.

“How is a homeless person supposed to have an address?

“I realise the people at WINZ are just following guidelines and doing their job, but it seems ridiculous to demand an address from someone who clearly doesn’t have one.”

Mr Alexander decided to be resourceful and try to fi nd some help himself.

“But I’ve been turned away

from most places - I offered to do work in exchange for food, but I couldn’t even get a stale loaf of bread.

“I got to the stage that I sat outside the supermarket with a sign asking for help.

“The only thing put in the box was a sachet of sauce.

“I am disappointed by the public’s response to someone being in dire straits.

“People seem to move heav-en and earth for a stranded whale, but don’t want to help another human being.

“I didn’t want to sit around and wait for handouts and I’m not looking for sympathy or pity.

“I just feel there needs to be a better system to help home-less people.

“There must be others that

fi nd themselves in this situa-tion.”

After visiting the Te Awamutu Courier offi ce Mr Alexander was heading off to search for a job and back to WINZ with an address pro-vided by an acquaintance.

He’s not sure what the future holds, but he’s deter-mined he won’t be living on the streets forever.

World their oyster for teen artists

Teen art from around the world is set to in-spire visitors to the Royal Easter Show, thanks to an international competition organised in Otorohanga.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view and purchase art by teenagers from around the world.

The inaugural International Student Art Con-test, set up by Otorohanga Rotary Club, is open to high school students worldwide.

Several hundred entries have been received from as far-fl ung places as Nepal, Mongolia, Romania, South Africa, Peru, Israel, Argentina, Jamaica, Turkey, Canada and the US, as well as from throughout New Zealand.

There are prizes for both international and na-tional placegetters.

First prize in both categories carries $1,000 prize money and the opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural exchange. The international win-ner gets to visit and travel around New Zealand for three weeks. While the New Zealand winner gets to travel to the overseas winner’s hometown and country.

Otorohanga Rotary Club member and contest curator, Barry Marx says the aim of the project is to forge links between young people interna-tionally and increase international and cultural awareness and understanding.

Entrants must be under 19 years of age on April 4, 2007 and studying at high school level at some time during the past 12 months. Art works can be paint, ink, collage, painted ceramic or com-puter-generated. Home schooled, disabled and hospitalised students are eligible to enter, and there are special allowances for any winner who would have diffi culties travelling.

The winners will be announced at the offi cial opening of the Royal Easter Show on Wednesday April 4, and all entries will be on display and for sale at the Royal Easter Show, on from April 5-9 at the ASB Showgrounds, Auckland. The sale proceeds will be paid directly to the artists, less 25% that will go towards Rotary-funded child and youth charitable initiatives around the world.

“The works are of an extremely high calibre and truly inspirational given the circumstances of some. All have a story and all are for sale, so this is a rare opportunity to purchase beautiful art while also doing good by helping fund Rotary youth initiatives around the world.”

For more information contact Mr Marx at 021 626 090, [email protected], with full details at www.oto-rotary.org

Premiere befi tting theatre

By Dean TaylorLast week I was sitting in the Regent

Theatre beside my former fi lm lecturer, fi lm critic and friend Sam Edwards, watch-ing the New Zealand premiere of ‘Miss Pot-ter’ to celebrate the theatre’s 75th birthday, thinking this is absolutely perfect.

Sam was chuckling in baritone and mak-ing notes in the dark. I wrote some notes too, but I couldn’t read them later.

People spoke before the screenings that day - various speakers, but all with one real message. Movies are magic, and Te Awamutu is lucky.

It has been written about many times before - provincial cinemas die and we all have to drive to the city multiplex, cue for tickets in the confectionary aisle, look up at the screens, endure endless commercials and forgo intervals. All except us.

The Regent is 75 mainly because owner Allan Webb is passionate about movies and movie theatres. And so the biggest little provincial theatre in New Zealand gets the premiere of ‘Miss Potter’ - an absolutely charming fi lm about a woman everyone knows, but of whom we knew little about.

THEATRE USHEROne of the fi rst guest speakers was Jean

Westbrook (nee Owens) who was an usher for 11 years from 1950.

As a working teenager she would make 30 shillings week for six evening sessions and two matinees, keeping 10 for herself and giving the rest to her Mum.

She left school at 14 to work as a proof reader for the Courier, also keeping her ushering job. Mrs Westbrook says her boss never knew she would sneak out every Thursday to do the matinee.

Being an usher had its advantages. She says she got the fi rst look at all the

boys because the ‘pictures’ was such a popular social occasion, plus while still at school she made sure her favourite teach-ers got good seats and ‘courting couples’ got the back seats. Saturday nights were so popular people would book, and regulars had the same spot each week.

Patrons got a passout at the intervals so they could buy lollies and icecreams across the road at the Embassy, until they built their own confectionary bar.

Mrs Westbrook also recalls how people would enjoy keeping up with the news via the Newsreels, plus fi nd out about their own town via advertisements and current event notices run prior to the interval.

She remembers news of Edmund Hil-lary’s conquest being broadcast and every-one applauded.

At my screening of ‘Miss Potter’ people clapped at the end - I would say as much

for The Regent as for the fi lm.But it is a lovely fi lm and I am sure it will

do well. I went again on the weekend with my wife and that audience also loved it.

MISS POTTER REVIEWEDIt seems fi tting that a fi lm that recalls

the life of a magical writer and artist is shown in a magical theatre.

‘Miss Potter’ is not perfect - but it is very enjoyable.

Apart from the fact Renée Zellweger is also an associate producer, I am not sure why an American is cast to play an English woman. But it’s okay - and so is she in the role. I am sure some people will love her.

But it’s the beautiful production, the real capturing of that time in history (which is not that long ago), the clever humour and the insight into the life and passion of Bea-trix Potter that is so intriguing.

The animation effects are priceless - it is like sharing a secret, and shows in some ways just how naive a young woman she was. But she also shows she is wise and thoughtful, and her country owes her a great debt of gratitude, not just for being such a popular author and artist, but for her legacy of saving a great area of the Lake District, a great story inspiration, for future generations.

So if you’ve ever heard of Peter Rabbit - you need to see ‘Miss Potter’.

TE AWAMUTU patrons (above - in proper theatre seating) prepare to be fi rst in the country to see ‘Miss Potter’. 079076AD

Lloyd and Pam Solley love the difference Stutex Stone can make to a house or building.

“People just go ‘wow’ when they see the before and after shots.”

The Te Awamutu couple are the local franchise holders for the man-made stone that graces the Ale House, the Alexandra Hotel and a number of homes around the Waipa District.

“It’s been particularly popular in Cambridge - in two of the newer subdivisions you can see seven or eight homes in each that feature Stutex Stone.”

Stutex Stone designs are lightweight profi les, which resemble a range of natural stones.

The styles encompass a va-riety of schist, fi eldstone, river rock, cobblestone and mountain stone.

The profi les are manufactured

from a composite of crushed stone, perlite, pumice and ce-ment, and are coloured with high grade oxides, to ensure a close resemblance to natural stone.

“Because Stutex weighs around a third of the weight of natural stone there is no extra strengthening to buildings re-quired, installation is fast and effi cient and it is a cost-effective way to have the appearance of stone.

“Buildings and homes we have used Stutex Stone on have certainly increased in value as well.

“We have a number of exam-ples where some work has been done on a property and then it has been sold again quickly at a signifi cantly increased price, easily recouping the outlay for the Stutex Stone.”

As well as being suitable for

homes and commercial build-ings, Stutex Stone is also exten-sively used on fences, retaining walls and around barbecue areas.

It has been successfully used by councils for signage, memori-als and entrance ways.

“Several housing compa-nies now use our product and have included it on their show homes.

“This means many people have started asking specifi cally for this product to be used on their new home.”

The Solleys’ franchise covers the area from Pokeno in the north to Tokoroa in the south, but the bulk of their work is in Hamilton and Cambridge.

They have many photos and examples of their products available. For further details contact Lloyd Solley (ph 871 5311 or 0274 990 216).

By Cathy AsplinRebecca Roberts is

just 19 years old, but is quickly making her mark in hairdressing.

The KLB stylist was one of two winners named at the 2007 Wella Young Professional Styl-ist Waikato regional com-petition in Hamilton.

She beat out 26 other stylists for a spot in the grand fi nal.

Matt Forsman from Hamilton and Rebecca go on represent the Waikato at the grand fi nal in Auckland on June 30.

For Rebecca the com-petition was a whole new experience.

“I haven’t done any-thing like this before and I must admit I was bit nervous about it, but once I got started I was fi ne.”

Rebecca was able to col-our her model’s hair prior to the event, but the cut-ting and styling was done live on stage at ‘Altitude’ in front of judges, other competitors and around 200 spectators.

She had just 45 min-utes to create her win-ning look.

Rebecca’s model Jessica Cook had her hair par-tially coloured blue, and was given a classic bob shape with a blunt fringe on the night.

The competition is judged across four catego-ries: cut, colour, styling and total fashion look.

Judges Jock Robson and Jennifer Morgan says the winners showed good confi dent use of cutting and styling tools and very relevant use of colour.

For her win at regional level Rebecca collected an i-Pod nano and a dig-ital camera.

If she is again success-ful at national level she will pick up a $5000 trip to the UK.

Relay for Life raises over $250,000Hamilton Relay For Life proved a huge success for the Waikato/Bay of

Plenty Cancer Society, with more then $250,000 raised by the weekend’s event.

Over 2000 people from a record 150 teams joined in the 21-hour over-night fundraiser at Claudelands Events Centre.

“The people taking part are an absolute inspiration, they put so much effort in and I know they get a great deal out of it too,” says Erin Mitch-ell, event co-ordinator.

She says the support of the public who came along was also greatly appreciated, along with the mighty efforts of volunteers.

“Relay For Life is an amazing fundraiser and people give so gener-ously. As well it provides a unique way of raising awareness of cancer in the community and of the Cancer Society who provide support services, cancer prevention programmes and research.

“We are delighted by the response to this year’s Hamilton Relay For Life. Every year the event grows and that is so much about the people who take part and become involved. It has become an amazing commu-nity event and one everyone is proud to be part of.”

Cars, horses to create classic atmosphere

The combination of classic cars and horses is an unlikely mix, but one that has become synonymous with the New Zea-land league of the FEI Eventing World Cup.

The Sky City Hamilton Clas-sic Car Picnic will once again feature at the show-jumping fi nale of the Mitavite Horse Trial at the Kihikihi Domain on Easter Sunday, April 8.

This novel, popular concept is now in its third year, with a lot of the same classic car own-ers enthusiastic to bring their cars for display and enjoy the proceedings.

The cars are all well treas-ured and polished and add a unique form of glamour and colour to the event.

These real old-timer classic

and vintage cars are set up with tables, chairs, umbrellas and hampers. The hampers contain an impressive array of gourmet food and beverages, including wines from the local award win-ning boutique winery Mystery Creek.

Each picnic caters for a party of 10, and provides prime ring-side viewing of the internation-al equestrian action. Adding to the ambiance will be live music and entertainment.

Kihikihi Waikato Eventing spokesperson Pip Kay says that the Sky City Hamilton Classic Car Picnic provides a unique entertainment and hospitality experience at a very affordable price.

“We sell the complete package at just $350 per party, and this

just covers our costs.“It is all about getting people

along and creating an atmos-phere to match the interna-tional status of this event.”

Kihikihi Waikato Event-ing hopes that the wider Te Awamutu community support their novel initiative by getting friends together and purchasing a picnic. It is an ideal opportu-nity for businesses to treat staff and clients.

More information can be found at www.teawamutu.net/eventing.

Bookings are being taken either by Pip Kay on (07) 827 3511, or on the event website. Pip would like to hear from any classic car owners who would like to display their vehicle.

SCENE SET: The combination of classic cars and excellent wine, beverages and cuisine should again create a magic atmosphere for the show jumping on the fi nal day of the Mitavite Horse Trails at Kihikihi Domain at Easter Weekend. Photo supplied

Call goes out to Waipa talent

The Mitavite Horse Trial - featuring the FEI Eventing World Cup Class at the Kihikihi Domain - has become a showcase for equestrian sport.

Organisers now want to share the spotlight with the talented enter-tainers of Waipa.

A couple of selected groups or individuals will have the opportunity to perform at various times during the three-day long equestrian event over Easter weekend (April 6-8).

“The Waipa District has always been a nursery-ground for talent,” says organiser Robyn North.

“The Finn brothers, Carly Binding and the Datsuns are just a few big names in the enter-tainment industry that have connections with the Waipa District.

“We will have an open mind when putting to-gether the entertainment schedule. We envisage anything is possible, from bands, dancers, buskers to stilt-walkers. There are plenty of talented non-profi t groups and in-dividuals in our district.”

North says this would be an ideal promotional opportunity as well as great practice performing at a public event.

Anyone interested in performing at the Horse Trial should email [email protected].

Marx family honour Eric, GwenThe Marx family installed a memorial seat

at the top of the hill on the Stewart Alexander course in honour of Gwen and Eric Marx.

A family spokesperson says they built the seat so that members can sit and enjoy the beautiful view of the wonderful golf course where their par-ents spent many hours of pleasure and work.

Gwen and Eric Marx were both life members of Stewart Alexander.

They will be remembered by many of the cur-rent members as popular and enthusiastic mem-bers.

Gwen was a very keen player for over 40 years, while Eric was a tree planter and assisted with the many working bees. The trees now dominate the course.

The family had a remembrance day recently, including luncheon at the golf house and a fun game of golf.

It was a very special day for the whole fam-ily, including grandchildren and great grandchil-dren.

Waikato swim medal haul for Maidment

Te Awamutu’s Rachel Maidment was one of the top performers at the Waikato junior swimming championships at Waterworld in Hamilton.

The event for swimmers aged 12 and under was held at Waterworld in Hamilton.

Maidment dominated the 10 year old rankings achieving two golds in the 50m freestyle and but-terfl y events.

She also claimed silver in the 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 50m backstoke, along with bronze in the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m backstroke. She was also a fi nalist in the 50m breaststroke.

Navaar Atutahi chimed in making the fi nals of the 11 year 50m butterfl y and 50m freestyle.

Atutahi achieved her goal of qualifying for the national junior event in Auckland at the end of last month.

Coach Claire Schrieber is delighted with the progress of her two young charges. She is now working with the 13 and over age group for their Inter-regional fi xture with Bay of Plenty and Taranaki to be held at Waterworld at the end of the month.

The club’s senior swimmers have been training up to eight hours per week to give themselves the best possible chance in this inaugural inter-regional competition.

Novelty balloons heading our way

Balloons over Waikato are thrilled to announce another pair of gorgeous special shaped balloons that will be attending the Festival this year.

AeroNut and HazelNut (brought to you by WEL Energy Trust) are making the trip to New Zealand for the fi rst time from Bosque Farms, New Mexico. USA.

In fact this is the fi rst time they have left the country!

Pilot Roger Baldwin and his wife Kelly cur-rently own fi ve balloons (four of which are special shapes), including the two that will certainly be a draw card at the Balloons over Waikato Festival for young and old alike.

“In 2004, they brought their boy-squirrel, Aero-Nut, from Brazil., and we realised shortly after that Aero-Nut really needed a wife, and that’s how we got Hazel-Nut,” Mr Baldwin said of the couple’s second girl-squirrel.

Event Manager Michele Connell says: “We know the huge popularity of a ‘pair ‘of balloons and the public will remember the Bees in 2004, we are extremely lucky to fi nd another ‘matching couple’ to bring to our Event”.

“WEL Energy Trust’s grant enables us to source and ultimately invite these balloons to the Event and we thank them for their continued support.”

Gun club president NZ clay target hot shot

By Colin ThorsenGrant Wallace was in a class of his own

winning the 15 pair double rise title at the national clay target championships.

The 45-year-old Ngahinapouri builder was the only shooter out of 210 competi-tors to record the possible 30/30 at the Waikato Gun Club.

It was no mean feat in the demanding double rise event.

Two targets come out at once, each shooter has two shots to hit the two moving targets and Wallace nailed all 15 pairs.

He says the worst part was having to wait around for two hours to see if he’d won or had to have a shoot off.

“It takes time to get through a fi eld of over 200.

“I was about the 100th shooter on the mound, so I had plenty of anxiety attacks until the last competitor had shot.”

He need not have worried. There were four guys on 29/30, he was the only one with the possible.

The huge fi eld included shooters from Australia and Norfolk Island.

An Australian has won the event four of the past eight years.

Wallace says he had no master plan to break through for his fi rst national title.

“It was a matter of being focused on the day. It just happened for me.

“Being national champion erases the disappointment of not making last year’s New Zealand Macintosh team.”

He was team reserve for the interna-tional postal shoot in 2006.

The father of two daughters, aged fi ve and seven, has been back shooting for four years since taking a break of 13 years from the sport.

He has dual membership at Pirongia Gun Club, where he is president, and Waikato Gun Club.

Other career highlights for Wallace include winning the Waikato club points score championship, and fi nishing run-ner-up to the national champion in a lu-crative points score event at Barrytown, north of Greymouth 18 months ago. The winner won $11,000, while Wallace pock-eted $500.

Wallace joins an elite group of Pirongia shooters to have won national titles in recent years, including Steve Vincent, Paul Vincent and Jim Tarrant.

Steve Vincent was the only local shooter from Waipa, Waitomo districts to make this year’s New Zealand Mac-intosh team.

Only the top 25 overall scorers from the national single rise, single barrel and points score championship events

made the team.Vincent vindicated his selection with

an outstanding score of 297/300 when New Zealand had their postal shoot on Saturday morning. He shot 100 targets but had three second barrels.

For anyone wishing to have a crack at clay target shooting, Wallace says come along to Pirongia Gun Club the fi rst Sunday of every month at 10am, except the months of May and August.

First year member Toni Cavey sent shock waves through Pirongia Golf Club after shoot-ing 88 off-the-stick on ladies’ day.

The 32 handicapper won the bronze II LGU scramble with a sizzling 56 net, having carded even halves of 44.

She also took out the division two scramble on par with 12-up. Her nearest rival was on 3-up.

Cavey’s previous best gross score was a far more sedate 97.

A continuation of this kind of form must make the rookie an excellent chance to feature prominently, if not win, come championship time.

Sue Young shot 70 net to be top qualifi er for the Fay Haberfi eld Rosebowl.

LGU winners: W Gray (silver) 73 net, E Black-wood (bronze I) 72, T Cavey (bronze II) 56.

Scramble on par, division 1: W Gray 1-up, E Blackwood square, J Reakes, P MacIntyre -1. Division 2: T Cavey 12-up, S Young 3-up, P Mc-Farlane 2-up, A Miers square.

Century 21 longest putt: N Hancock.STEWART ALEXANDER

Matthew Collett fared best with 24½ stabl-eford on the fi nal night of the twilight season at Stewart Alexander Golf Club.

Overall individual twilight tournament winners (since Christmas): C Wells (men), D Griffi n (la-dies).

Final night scramble, men: M Collett 24½, T Heke 22, S Parkes, B Watkinson 21, D Parker 19½. R Taylor, T Haumaha, D Heta 18; ladies: A McGhie 21, H Berg, E Ford 20, N Kemp 18, G Quarrie 17.

Midweek ladies’ scramble: C Forster 35, B Walker 34, C Formosa 33, H Berg 32, E Trout-beck, H Parker 31. Twos: H Parker, H Berg.

No midweek or Veterans results due to course being closed for coring of greens.

They’re back - Slayer - the Grammy award winning American thrash metal band, formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King.

And for their New Zealand show they are supported by Mastadon.

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate Slayer and Mastadon perform-ing an R18 gig at Auckland’s St James on Saturday, April 21 by winning a copy of Mastadon’s their latest album ‘Blood Moun-tain’.

Tickets from CDs4nix. Described as an album

that isn’t just unconventional but surreal, progressive and unrepentantly heavy it contains the song ‘Colony Of Birchmen’.

Nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards it lost out to none other than Slayer’s ‘Eyes Of The Insane’.

With other top singles ‘Crystal Skull’, ‘The Wolf Is Loose’ and ‘apilliarian Crest’ included in the mix, it’s an ideal appetite whetter

for the live show to follow.Slayer rose to fame as a leader

of the American thrash metal movement, with their 1986 release ‘Reign in Blood’, which has been called ‘the heaviest album of all time’.

The band is credited as one of the ‘Big Four’ thrash metal bands, along with Megadeth, Metallica, and Anthrax.Slayer are known for their distinctive musical traits, involving fast tremolo picking, guitar solos, double bass drumming, and screaming vocals. The band’s lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as serial killers, satanism, religion, warfare and the Holocaust have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and strong criticism from religious groups and the public.

Their latest CD ‘Christ Illusion’ has been described as ‘a raging, forward-thinking heavy metal melding with hardcore thrash which is what made them such a breath of freah air in the fi rst place’. It features the singles ‘Cult’ and ‘Eyes Of The Insane’. The latter has also made it onto

the soundtrack of horror fl ick ‘Saw III’.

So, if you like your music heavy, hard, loud and proud and can stand a bit of controversy - this is the show for you. Check out www. myspace.com/dynamoshows for further info about this and other upcoming shows.

To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Mastadon CD Competi-tion’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Friday.

The Descent‘The Descent’ is the

story of an all-female caving expedition that goes horribly wrong, set in a cave system deep in the Appalachian Moun-tains.

On a daredevil cav-ing holiday, six women friends are unexpected-ly trapped underground when a rock fall blocks their exist.

Searching the maze of tunnels for a way out, they fi nd themselves hunted by a race of fear-less, hungry predators, once humanoid but now monstrously adapted to live in the dark…

As the others battle for their lives, Sarah, still recovering from a mental collapse brought

on by the recent deaths of her family, is fi ghting for her sanity.

When old secrets are revealed, the friends turn on one another, causing the group to implode. Betrayed and desperate, Sarah real-izes that to make it back to the surface, she must become as savage as the creatures themselves.

Deft direction and strong performances from its all-female cast make ‘The Descent’ a riveting, claustrophobic horror fi lm.

Orchestra Seats

Catherine, hugely popular (and wealthy) from her long-running television soap opera, longs for glory on the big screen.

She prepares to star in a Feydeau farce about to open on the 17th, but despite all her success she wonders if her work has any value or mean-ing.

Jean-Francois, piano prodigy with an inter-national reputation, is preparing for a major Beethoven recital on the 17th, yet he basically just wants to be alone. Jacques, a businessman turned art connoisseur, has amassed an ex-traordinary, highly per-sonal art collection, but on the 17th it will all be sold off.

Catherine, Jean-Fran-cois and Jacques have

all devoted their lives to art, yet what kinds of lives has art given them?

They cross paths and nurse their neuroses at a café where they are waited on by Jessica, recently arrived in Paris on her own quest for fame and fortune.

The History Boys

‘The History Boys ‘tells the story of an unruly class of bright, funny history students in pursuit of an under-graduate place at Ox-ford or Cambridge.

Bounced between their maverick English mas-ter (Richard Griffi ths), a young and shrewd teacher hired to up their test scores (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grossly outnumbered history teacher (Frances de la Tour) and a head-master obsessed with results (Clive Merrison), the boys attempt to sift through it all to pass the daunting university ad-missions process.

Their journey becomes as much about how edu-cation works, as it is about where education leads.

Through biting wit and rapid-fi re dialogue - not to mention mu-sic, song, vintage movie scenes, impassioned de-bates and moments of stark emotional truth ‘The History Boys’ hu-morously brings to the

fore the serious subject of how one generation passes its wisdom on to the next.

Hot FuzzNicholas Angel (Simon

Pegg) is a top London cop. In fact, he makes everyone else around him look bad.

As a result, his jeal-ous colleagues conspire against him and have him transferred to the sleepy wee country vil-lage of Sandford.

His intense, testoster-one-packed nights in the city have now been replaced by neighbour-hood watch meetings and elementary school appearances.

Even worse, Angel is coupled with a new partner, the hapless, but well-meaning Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), who dreams of being the next Mel Gibson-type hero.

The two eventually stumble onto a series of suspicious accidents that suddenly make Angel’s life a lot more interesting.

Motivated by the events and convinced of foul play, he now sees Sandford as a far less idyllic place than he originally thought.

‘Hot Fuzz is the ea-gerly anticipated second comedy feature from the co-creators of 2004’s award-winning sleeper hit ‘Shaun of the Dead’.
