Organisms & their

Environment

What I Know…

How I Know…

Unit 6 ObjectivesNB p. 58

Unit 6

My objectives for this unit…

I will OBSERVE & DESCRIBE how different environments, including microhabitats, support different varieties of organisms.

I will DESCRIBE how biodiversity contributes to the sustainability of an ecosystem. I will OBSERVE, RECORD, & DESCRIBE the role of ecological succession such as in a

microhabitat of a garden with weeds.

Key Content Vocabulary:

Adaptation – a change in structure or habits (behavior), often hereditary, by which an organism improves its condition in relationship to its environment

Biodiversity – variety of organisms in an ecosystem or biome Climax community – dominant community of plants and animals that come to live in an

area Ecological succession – the changing sequence of communities that live in an ecosystem

during a given time period Limiting factor – a condition or resource that keeps a population at a certain size Microhabitat –small or specialized habitat within a larger habitat Niche – the unique role or job of an organism in an ecosystem Pioneer species –first organisms to live in an area Primary succession – a process that develops a biotic community in a previously

uninhabited and barren habitat with little or no soil Secondary succession – a process started by an event that reduces an already established

ecosystem to a smaller population of species Sustainability – ability to maintain ecological processes over long periods of time; ability

of an ecosystem to maintain its structure and function over time

Ecosystems Q3 & B 1/21/15 & 1/22/15

Q3: (Write the question & the answer on p. 59)What is an ecosystem? (think about the word parts)

B: -Glue the Unit 6 Objectives onto p. 58 of your notebook. -Draw an illustration of what an ecosystem looks like below your Q3 on this page. -Complete the Circle Map on p. 57 when your done.

NB p. 59

Ecosystems Q3 & B 1/21/15 & 1/22/15

Q3: What is an ecosystem? A biological community of interacting organisms & their physical environment. Biotic & abiotic factors interacting together.

B:

NB p. 59

*Your illustration should include biotic and abiotic factors interacting together.

Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem Notes

NB p. 60

Level of Organization

Definition Illustration

Organism (Species) One organism or species.(Draw an illustration of

ANY biotic factor)

PopulationA group of more than

one organism or species.(Draw an illustration of 2 or more of the organism

you drew above)

CommunityAll the populations in a

specific area. A great community usually has

biodiversity.

(Draw an illustration of 2 or more types of

populations)

EcosystemAll of the abiotic and

biotic factors interacting in an environment.

(Draw an illustration of all abiotic & biotic

factors)

Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem Q3 & B 1/23/15

Q3: (Write the question & the answer on p. 61) Give an example of a living thing (biotic) interacting

with a non-living thing (abiotic).

B: Match the phrases below to complete the Ecology analogies.

campus environment ,teacher subject taught and last name, all science teachers on campus, all people on campus

___________ represents Species (Organism)___________ represents Population___________ represents Community___________ represents Ecosystem

Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem Q3 & B 1/23/15

Q3: (Write the question & the answer on p. 62)

What do the following word parts mean?

B: Create your own analogies representing the levels of

organization in an Ecosystem (organism, population,

community, ecosytem, biome).

Q3: (Write the question & the answer on p. 63) What is sustainability?

B: Create a public service poster illustrating and describing the effects of non-native invasive species on our

ecosystem. You can use zebra mussels in a local lake as an example. Include

detailed information on the causes and effects of invasive species and how to

prevent further spread. Be creative! An example of what a public service poster

Q3: (Write the question & the answer on p. 63) What is sustainability?

The ability to tolerate. In Ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse, productive, and balanced over time.
