Champion better work and working lives Your role as an HR or L&D professional is central to an organisation, having the responsibility for attracting, developing and retaining your company’s most important asset – its people.

And wherever you work, your position can involve and influence all areas of the business, and all members of staff.

Above all, it’s inspiring to remember that how you apply your knowledge and understanding today, will shape the world’s workforce in the years to come.

CIPD professional membership builds your careerWhether you’re starting out in HR or L&D, changing your career, or deciding to specialise after years of experience, CIPD professional membership will give you the edge in a competitive job market.

Professional membership differentiates you, it puts you in demand with potential employers and enhances your promotion and salary prospects.

Sought after by employers worldwide CIPD professional membership not only demonstrates that you meet internationally recognised standards, it’s a trusted benchmark against which employers can judge your workplace abilities beyond study and qualification.

‘I was keen to focus on my own professional development. That’s why I did my CIPD qualification and then my master’s. I encourage everyone who works for me to become CIPD-qualified.’

What is CIPD professional membership?Professional membership of the CIPD sets you apart from other HR and L&D professionals. It demonstrates the knowledge, experience and relevance you bring to employers and clients.

Available at three levels, Associate member, Chartered Member and Chartered Fellow, it shows your commitment to high standards, your professional development and compliance with an ethical Code of Professional Conduct, all of which enhances your credibility and builds trust in the HR and L&D profession.

Professional membership also entitles you to use designatory letters after your name, highlighting your professional standing within the HR and L&D community:

• Associate member (Assoc CIPD)• Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD)• Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD)

CIPD professional membership is highly valued by employers. It shows your ability to create an impact in the workplace and make a difference to an organisation’s strategy and its people. As you develop your HR and L&D expertise, professional membership opens doors to new career opportunities. That’s why an increasing number of talented HR and L&D professionals aspire to achieve CIPD professional member status.

8 Routes to professional membership

Why study a CIPD qualification?Whether you’re starting out or looking to progress your career, the CIPD’s internationally-recognised professional qualifications are a great way to acquire the knowledge and skills essential to becoming an effective HR or L&D practitioner.

CIPD qualifications are:

• relevant and practical

They are designed to enable you to apply your learning back at work immediately.

• valued by employers

You’ll develop the business understanding and technical knowledge that organisations are looking for.

Choosing the right qualification for youCIPD qualifications are available at three levels:

• Level 3 Foundation, which is equivalent to A-level

• Level 5 Intermediate, which is equivalent to foundation degree/HND level

• Level 7 Advanced, which is postgraduate level.

At each level you can follow an HR or L&D pathway or a combination of both. Our qualifications consist of a number of units across HR and L&D subjects. The number of units you choose (within rules of combination) will determine the size of your qualification (Award, Certificate or Diploma).

If you want to cover the essential units at a given level, a Certificate would be appropriate. A Diploma covers a wider breadth of subjects. An Award allows you to cover specific areas of interest.

Your study optionsWhen you’ve decided on the right qualification for you, the next step is to choose how you’d like to study. CIPD qualification providers offer flexible study programmes to suit your timescales, budget and home or work commitments:

• full-time or part-time study• block study• supported distance learning• mixed mode study.

Visit cipd.co.uk/qualification-finder to find out more.

CIPD professional membershipWhen you successfully complete a Certificate or Diploma, at any level, you’ll become an Associate member, meaning you can use the designatory letters Assoc CIPD after your name. If you complete the Level 7 Advanced Diploma, you can apply to upgrade to Chartered Member or Fellow (subject to eligibility).
