Community In Partnership

Bristol City Council has started work on putting together the plan that will lead to new development in Knowle West. The plan, which is called the Knowle West Regeneration Framework, may bring new housing, new employment opportunities, new shops and community facilities, a new primary school building, and better public transport in future.

Urban Initiatives, which is a group of consultants appointed by Bristol City Council, are working closely with local residents and organisations to put the plan together. Once the Knowle West Regeneration Framework is completed and agreed at the end of 2009, it will be used to bring major investment to the area to fund new development over the next decade and beyond, so it is very important that all local residents get involved in making this plan as it will lead

to significant changes to how the area will look and feel.

As a part of their work, Urban Initiatives and other consultants will also be contributing to a plan that will define how the green spaces in the area will be used in the future.They will be working closely with Council officers from the Parks Department to ensure that consultation with residents on what should happen to the areas green spaces is carried out to the same high standard as across the rest of the city.

The consultation process for this will start in areas of the Northern Slopes and land adjacent to Kingswear & Torpoint Roads before being rolled out across the rest of the Knowle West.More on progress with the Knowle West Regeneration Framework will feature in the next edition of The Knowledge.

held on 12th March 2009 at the Park Opportunity Centre to give young people the chance to show an audience what special talents they had.

The Superstar Talent Show, was an enormous success. There were 16 performances from 20 young people who ranged in age from 8 to 18. each performer gave everything they had, which enthralled the crowd of 150 plus.

The quality of performances was very high, but in the end the judges decided to award the following prizes: 15-19 yrs:1st-Stacey Phillips & Jamie Lee Coyne10-14 yrs:1st-Chantelle Sperring (oasis Academy)2nd-Carina Simoes & Shannon Hancock (Victoria Park Juniors) 3rd-Shanice Rawlins (Brislington enterprise College5-9 yrs:1st-Giorgia McNeill (Connaught)Overall Winner: Kacey-May Carter (Christ the King)Superstar Talent Show 2 will be held on July 17th. May and June are good months to play catch-up if your growing year has had a slow start, or just forget what the experts say you should have done in March-April and go from scratch. you can sow directly onto your plot (as long as the weather is reasonable); peas, beans, sweetcorn, cucumber and squash. Summer salads can be sown from now until September, as can most annual flowers (or use bedding plants for colour) and plant autumn flowering bulbs by July.

Haven’t got a plot? Living in a concrete jungle? don’t worry - lots of food and flowers can be grown in pots or other containers. you can even grow a kitchen herb garden in a hanging basket. Happy Gardening!

good NeWS eNvIroNMeNTal TeaM aT KWMC Our Carbon Makeover project has received international recognition and been hailed as a great success by the European Commission (eC) after Project leaders attended a conference in Brussels on February 24th. The conference was a chance for the EC to explore the challenges of achieving social and environmental change. Carbon Makeover was selected as a good example of this. The eC said, “Carbon Makeover is a win-win project”. A big congrats to all the Carbon Makeover homes who’ve worked so hard to gain us this recognition!Green Mapping Once upon a time some Knowle West residents dreamt about walking round the area admiring the grand old trees, hearing the birds sing and buying eggs from their neighbours who kept chickens...Many months on these residents collaborated with 2 local young artists and have realised a way to achieve their dream! They are proud to announce the launch of the Knowle West Green Map. KNoWle WeST reCYled goodS STar IN HarrY PoTTer FIlMVICKy BeCKWITH, Re:WoRKRe:store are now selling furniture to Inns Court, Knowle Park and Hollywood! Re:store, Filwood Broadways premier furniture shop, has just sold almost £500 of goods for the film ‘Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows’. The set designing company were in Bristol purchasing props and heard of re:store through the Furniture Reuse Network (FRN).The shop has just finished an exhibition of furniture restored by students and volunteers in the Broadwalk Art Space. We ran workshops decorating items of furniture like ‘pimp my chair’. We sold over £200 worth of items and hope to repeat the experience over the summer. It is important that we have the best equipment available to support the educational needs of our children; the theft from OUR children’s schools of vital equipment will have an impact on their progress. This equipment belongs to OUR schools and is for OUR children, every penny we spend carrying out repairs/replacements has to come from the funds we have for their education.3 months + 8 schools + 34 break-ins = £55,000 wasted

Items are more than likely being sold in the area and most of the money made will be spent on drugs. If you are offered what you think is stolen property, don’t be tempted; give ouR children a chance by saying No! don’t forget buying stolen goods is also a crime and by doing so you can get a criminal record. you are encouraging them to continue and you may be their next target.

It’s harmful to the environment, dangerous to people and it’s illegal with fines up to £50,000 and 5 years imprisonment. If you use the council’s recycling collections correctly you should be able to manage with one bin a fortnight. Anyone who takes away your waste has to be a registered waste carrier (includes trades-man working on your home). WHaT To do aNd WHY?Food leftovers, peelings and cardboard make up a 3rd of what’s thrown away in the average Bristol bin.

Using the weekly food waste and cardboard collection service is easy, saves biodegradable waste from rotting in landfill where it releases harmful greenhouse gases, and is instead turned into compost that is used on farmland.

If your collection is kerbside, empty your caddy into your brown food waste bin (or large shared brown bin for flats). Keep the lid closed with the handle pulled forward to keep odours and animals at bay. Place this bin at the edge of your property on your usual collection day by 7am, with cardboard beside or underneath.

FooTPRINTS RAISe £’S oN Red NoSe dAy Staff and children at Footprints came to nursery in their pyjamas on 13 March all in aid of Comic Relief.We were delighted to raise £65.42. A big thank you to all who contributed.

Staff and children took part in a ‘Toddle Waddle’ on Wednesday 29th April in aid of The Meningitis Trust.

The Trust works to ensure all communities are aware of the impact of meningitis, and that anyone affected has access to quality care and support for as long as it is needed.

Knowle West Children’s Centre provides Day Care for children aged from 3 months - 4 years.We have a new early Years 1 room providing 6 paying places for babies aged 3 months - 2 years. early Years 2, children aged 2-3 years, has 36 places including 8 paying places.early Years 3 provides statutory nursery provision for 3-4 year olds as well as wrap-around care for up to 16 children.We are now open for sessional and wrap-around care from 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday.

Footprint’s Children’s Centre is part of Bristol City Council’s first phase of the Children’s Centres in the city. We are open 8am - 6pm weekdays, 50 weeks of the year. We went to the more

or less event on 7th March

at Knowle West Media

Centre . More or

less? was an eco

festival with

live debate, short films, pizza,

free cycle maintenance, recycled

bag making , live

music and lyrics, also

featuring Mother Earth,

her super helpers, and the fairtrade banana

world record.

I stayed at the event all day. My pizza was amazing. They had

a cycle bike what created a splash art and I did some sewing

where I made a bag. overall it was fantastic!

I have made lots of new friends from different

schools since joining the oasis Juniors Club at

Oasis Academy. I like the creative tasks and want

to go to the club again. It’s been nice to come to

the school and see what it is like. The teachers are

very kind.

My dad, Keith dean said: “Coming to the club has

helped Luke’s confidence, he’s made lots of new

friends and he’s really keen to come to the school

again, find out more about life at ‘big

school’and he’s got to know a

lot of the teachers

too.

on Thursday 12th March at

The Park opportunity Centre

in Daventry road there was a

talent show giving a chance

for all youngsters aged 5 living

in the Knowle, Filwood and

Windmill Hill area to show their

talent. There were three age

categories, which were 5-9,

10-14, and 15-19, and in each

of the categories there was at

least 1 winner. But there was an

overall winner who had the most

points out of all the contestants

and that winner was my cousin

Kacey-May Carter who lives in

Filwood. But I would like to say

a big well done to all the people

who participated you were all

fantastic I wouldn’t have the

guts to get up there. I would

also like to say well done to

Margret Rawlins for being a

fantastic MC.
