CIO Europe LinkedIn & Social Media Research

1. Running a broad LinkedIn search we find 16k profiles who currently hold the CIO Job Title across

19 European locations. If we look only at companies with 1000+ employees this number reduces

to 6.8k results.

In this research we have investigated European CIO’s across social networks to better

understand their numbers, language preferences and channel popularity to support the

building of CIO focused communities and social media assets.

2. To better understand the nuances of Job Titles across Europe we have selected a cross section of

companies and examined CIO v “IT Director” Job Titles. What this highlights is that “IT Directors”

(also SVP of IT & IT Managers) are actually in CIO positions. However as a low percentage we

would recommend remaining focused on CIO only.

3. From the 16k CIO profiles within LinkedIn 10.5k are written in English, supporting the premise

that English as the world’s leading business language. There are two exceptions to this, Germany

and Spain where mother tongue dominate.

4. Using the content research tool (https://epicenter.epictions.com) we have examined a selection

of keywords to better understand which social platforms the CIO target audience are most

commonly using & engaging with.

Summary:

Target Audience Size

Depending on company size criteria and the possibility of creating country/language specific groups

there is the European CIO critical mass within LinkedIn to successfully build communities.

Job Titles

While we recognise there are professionals that have Job Titles like IT Director, SVP Technology, IT

Manager that are undertaking CIO roles, we feel the percentage is low enough to purely focus a

community for those that are currently using the CIO Job Title.

Countries/Languages

While two thirds of the CIO’s on LinkedIn within Europe have profiles written in English, we feel that

if countries such as Germany and Spain are of a high priority then we should consider creating and

managing these Groups specifically within these languages.

Which Social Platform

Our research strongly indicates that LinkedIn and Facebook are the social platforms of choice for

European CIO’s.
