“Cinema for Peace is a wonderful organisation. For years, they’re paving the way and financing smaller

filmmakers, who are dealing with social issues. That’s important, because especially in my industry, you

know, it’s all about the almighty Dollar, how much is going to earn the box office.”

Leonardo DiCaprio, Recipient of the International Green Film Award 2009

“I am very happy to be present together with you at this phantastic, emotional and inspirational event. I

have to admit I made a mistake that should have not been done: I have not decided at once to come to

Berlin. But I see now that one has to come here to meet people who accepted to take over the challenges

of that time when we helped the world to emerge from the Cold War and opened up to an era of universal

cooperation. This event and gathering as well as the accomplishments of filmmakers have shown the

world that we posses great strength and potential to overcome this crisis. … Sadly there are still many

walls existing today: the wall of suspicion, of disbelief, the wall between the rich and the poor. People

must be realistic and see these walls! If this faith, which made the Fall of the Wall possible, had not existed

in 1989, the Wall would not have fallen, Germany would not have been reunited and the Cold War would

not have been ended. Therefore these walls must be shattered and especially the walls in the minds and

hearts of people, which I consider most important.”

Honorary Chair Mikhail Gorbachev, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

“I’ll tell you the story of a monk who escaped from Tibet and had an audience with the Dalai Lama. The

Dalai Lama remembered him from before 1959 … [The monk] … said yes, he had been in danger – the

danger of becoming angry, the greatest sin for a Tibetan. Being capable of forgiving, being capable of

seeing the humanity in a torturer – it’s a jewel that we cannot allow to be destroyed. And freedom for all

and every faith of China and Tibet. Think what you can do to help. It can be done. Every time you hear the

word ‘China’, think about Tibet. Think about this jewel – this jewel, this power of love and compassion.

China – Tibet, Tibet, every time you hear it. Thank you very much.”

“I have been speaking openly about environmental issues including global warming with a variety of differ-

ent organizations for over 13 years now and it wasn’t until that film came out, where Al Gore was truly able

to display the science to a worldwide forum in laymen’s terms making us truly understand the dangers that

face us in the future. That inspired me as a filmmaker, as an artist, to create my film, which was awarded

here last year, “The 11th hour”. (…) What I realized was I wanted to give these people, these experts, these

heroes of mine that devoted their lives to these issues a forum in which to speak that wasn’t reduced to a

10 second sound vibe in the media. Giving them an opportunity to express what they learned in their entire

lifetimes. And that’s the importance of this event here tonight. That is the importance of promoting and

protecting films like these that give people that voice in the world.”

Leonardo DiCaprio on presenting the International Green Film Award 2010

“For me it is important to assure you filmmakers, that the Lubanga case will reverberate all over the world

and the message has to be strong and clear: 12 year old boys and girl should go to school, they should be

protected. They should NOT be not be soldiers. Children should not be soldiers. Even before the decision

of the judges, in different countries like Columbia, Sri Lanka, Nepal children are being demobilized as a

consequence of judicial activities. And we need a better news, we need a world free of child soldiers. That’s

what we need. (…) I am responsible for what happens in court, but we need film makers to explain the lives

of these young kids who have been abducted to those people living here in Berlin, or in NY, Tokio und Sao

Paolo. That is why I am delighted to present the Cinema for Peace Award for Justice to a film about Joseph

Kony, to a film about child soldiers, the Cinema for Peace Award for Justice goes to “Children of war” by

Bryan Single.” Luis Moreno-Ocampo in his Laudatory Speech for the Cinema for Peace Award for Justice 2010

C I N E M A F O R P E A C E

“Cinema for Peace is a very different cinematic event. It doesn’t happen in NY, it doesn’t happen in Cannes,

it doesn’t happen in London, or at any other cinema festival around the world. It happens here in Berlin,

Germany and Berlin should be very proud of this event. (…)This is a powerful little thing here. It’s a power-

ful little thing, when George Clooney can be called a traitor for simply being here. It’s a power ful little thing,

when Dustin Hoffman doesn’t want to talk about his film here, but wants to talk about something greater.

(…) And the ‘green Oscar’ becomes more valuable , more treasured, because it isn’t simply art, its about

implementing that change, it is about forwarding that change. And it is through movies that you can tell

people, that you can create longings. (…)” Sir Bob Geldof in his Welcome Speech, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2010

“I am here because I believe that this mission deserves great support. I believe that cinema alone is ca-

pable of presenting the world with all its beauty but also with all its dangers. And I very much appreciate

the initiative of those people who are now my friends who have initiated this project and who are now

successful in pursuing it.(…) So today is a challenge to every one of us in our homes, in our countries, and

on the planet Earth to save nature. (…)”

President Mikhail Gorbachev on presenting the International Green Film Award 2010

“I just felt the it needs to be mentioned, what an extraordinary example the people of Northern Ireland are

for the rest of the world, because what they have been achieving in the past years during this peace project,

or let’s say peace process, shows an example for the world. They really show the world how it is possible

to finally, after decades of violence, terrible things, draw a line behind the past, and move on. This is not

easy, but they do it, it’s a painful process, and they do it in a way, in a peaceful way, not in a way that they

are looking for easy answers. I think this little film points a finger at that and shows the world how peace

is possible.” Liam Neeson in the aceptance speech for the Cinema for Peace Award for Reconciliation 2010

„Any man, and he’s amongst us tonight, who can look at a wall from a position of tremendous authority

and say to his peers: this is not working, it must come down, will, as you see in the context I’ve mentioned,

run the risk of becoming a martyr overnight. The removal of partitions in our minds and walls in our

hearts has come as a tremendous sacrifice, and there have been many who have martyred themselves in

this course. It is a miracle that this man is with us today. He’s a deeply charming and glorious man, the

most courageous son of Russia, the bravest of our European citizens: Mikhail Gorbachev!“

“It is really my great honour to be here and to talk about my fellow colleagues and people in this film who

are now in prison for more than sixty years. Although I’m here to celebrate at this ceremony, I can never

enjoy even the minimum of freedom. So I hope you will keep alive our hope to bring democracy to my

country, to Burma. To keep help us our journalism working inside Burma to let the world know what is

happening, and about the oppressions by the regime in Burma.”

Aung Htun for Burma VJ, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

“There will be no peace on earth if by 2015 these eight Millennium Development Goals will not be

achieved. So, let’s not forget them, that’s what we made this movie for, this might really help us more

than anything else. ” Gus Van Sant, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

“The return to the past was not always easy. It was very emotional, filled with memories, sometimes

pleasant, but sometimes very painful. The film has brought many concepts into clearer focus to me …

concepts such as Heimat, identity, faith, pride, family, good, evil, guilt, and forgiveness. Today, some of

my friends are Germans. My, our leitmotiv is: let us not repeat the sins of the fathers on the children.”

Menachem Meyer, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

“Our family was deported from that tiny village, because we were Jewish. On our way in from the airport

yesterday, we drove by that overwhelming sight, the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. I know of no other country

in this world who has or would have the courage, the audacity, the daring, yes, even the nerve to put this

scar on the German psyche in so prominent a site … adjacent to the Brandenburg gate, the Bundestag

and Reichstag, Unter den Linden. Germany has come a long way. I feel welcome again.”

Fred Raymes, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

“I really want to thank Cinema for Peace. This statement, our vision, will only come to life if we live togeth-

er. That is the statement. And I hope that the 21st of September, unanimously adopted by every member

state of the United Nations, is the day that brings us together – separate from politics and religion, in the

hope that we can live the level of consciousness that exists around the fundamental issue that humanity

faces, which indeed is the protection of each other. I and many others, including the people in this room,

will work tirelessly to see a day of global unity, a true day of intercultural cooperation, and the 21st of Sep-

tember is the starting point! Jeremy Gilley, Founder Peace One Day, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2009

Quotes 2003–2008 Quotes 2003–2008

“When I started acting, my hope was to find the thing inside me that connects me to everyone and as I

continued to grow as an artist, the primary thing I continued to look for is that same thing. I found out

that I’m from a tribe in East Africa and I went back there and went to a place called The Cave Of The First

Man, which is underneath the roots of a tree. When I reached the tree, I realised I was going back to man-

kind and it gave me a huge connection to everyone, and to you. And I’m so grateful to be a part of this,

because this is trying to love and to understand that we’re all connected in the deepest possible way: in

our hearts and in the life that rests inside of us. This is a great honour and I thank you for this moment.”

Forest Whitaker, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2007

“I am deeply thankful to Cinema for Peace for giving me the award of human rights and peace, the two

values that my unfortunate people have been deprived of for two decades. Although the authorities in

my country tried every possible way to prevent me of being with you here today, I am here and accept this

award on behalf of oppressed Afghan women who do not have the opportunity to speak for themselves.”

“A little small event has turned into something that strikes fear into the oppressor and hope into the op-

pressed and for those of you taking pictures tonight, for those of you writing about this evening, it is the

great shame of journalists that you write about the film stars’ dresses and the soccer stars’ indiscretions

and the pop stars’ drinking and drug taking – but when a journalist, a fellow journalist is murdered by

the state, where are you? What I would like tonight, what I would like to ask those of you who are editors,

those of you who are journalists, the journalistic trade unions – now when I return to England, I will ask

the journalists’ trade unions – as Garri Kasparov has just told us about the miraculous and the moving

vigil outside Anna’s flat. From now on, on Putin’s birthday (note: this was also the day Anna was murdered),

let us take as many journalists as possible – they can pay for it themselves – let the trade unions, the jour-

nalist trade unions, gather their members from all over the world and go to Moscow and stand outside

Anna’s flat. She is not dead, she is a living emblem of hope and journalists must bear vigil to this hope.

Every year on Putin’s birthday, you journalists!” Bob Geldof, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2008

“… I think it is the responsibility of the artists once in a while to switch on the monitor in our comfortable

lives to hear the cry that is happening elsewhere abroad. If we can do that – just somtimes remind people

gniht txen eht si taht dna gnireffus elbirret a ,ecitsujni elbirret a si ereht sevil ruo htiw suoenatlumis taht

is just wires and lights in a box – and cinema is just a way of selling popcorn and buying humans a new

house.” Richard Curtis, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2006

“I think it is now time for the artists, for the philosophers, and the poets, and the filmmakers to take some

responsibility and share their anguish and their pain, because if they share their anguish and their pain,

there is a possibility that we will all feel compassion … Let the artists, poets, and philosophers of today

collaborate to create that critical mass of peace consciousness and change world consciousness so that

the very idea of a violent solution to problems becomes abhorrent, becomes obscene, becomes disgust-

ing, becomes shameful, becomes disgraceful!” Deepak Chopra, Cinema for Peace, Los Angeles 2003

“I believe that I speak for everyone gathered here tonight to honour you and your work when I say: we stand

by you, behind you, for you, to help carry your voice for justice. Not only in Afghanistan, but the world. You

are a shining example of how one person can make a difference in millions of lives and in the future of mil-

lions. Bless you, Malalai, may God be with you.” Hilary Swank, Cinema for Peace, Berlin 2008

sort of striking. It made me a little angry and I wrote this film because of that – so you can honestly say

Cinema for Peace gala. There is, perhaps, no other European city which symbolizes better the changes of

time – from being the headquarter of World War II into a divided city for decades to the fall of the wall

“The Cinema for Peace Award for Justice: Why? Distance in space reviews our moral ability, our moral

ability to transform reality. Films are useful. Films showing crimes against humanity in Darfour, in Gaza,

in different places shock us and connect us. But also, films can show how to work together, how we can

act, how we can transform reality, how we can learn how to work with the new global institutions like the

International Criminal Court. Establishing peace and justice is a collective endeavour. And the Cinema for

Peace Award for Justice is doing its part.”

Cinema for Peace 2003: Dustin Hoffman’s speech received positive responses from the world media and moved the 600 gala guests, including George Clooney.

Since 2002 Cinema for Peace has been a worldwide initiative, promoting humanity through film while inviting members

of the international film community to attend the Cinema for Peace Awards Gala Night, annually staged within the period

of the Berlin International Film Festival. Showcasing cinematic work which highlights the human condition and human

values, we have created a platform for peace and tolerance. During the evening’s proceedings at the Konzerthaus, while

excerpts from exemplary works are screened, directors and producers are celebrated with the Cinema for Peace Award for

commendable works. Cinema for Peace brings together international star guests and global personalities from the world

of film, media, politics, business and society, while celebrating the power of the moving image and its ability to unite cul-

tures. This prestigious event is a symbol of peace, freedom and tolerance, a symbol with a lasting effect on the world of

film and media, initiating important projects and the free exchange of ideas.

The Cinema for Peace Initiative: Proving artists can make a difference

The power of Moving Pictures – the social, political and cultural responsibility of filmmakers

Leonardo DiCaprio at Cinema for Peace 2010

Moving pictures shape our perception of reality. In our visual age, the role of the film artist is crucial in influencing our

views and action. Cinema for Peace highlights the responsibility of the world of film and media. War, terrorism and humani-

tarian catastrophes are sad realities in many parts of the world, and since our perception of this world is so fundamentally

shaped by the media and by pictures, it is clear that film has a particularly important role to play. No other medium has

such a direct impact on the consciousness and emotions of the people and consequently, filmmakers have particular re-

sponsibility in our global society.

Cinema for Peace Cooperation with ICC„Film in the Name of Justice“

The International Green Film Award Presented by Mikhail Gorbachev & Leonardo DiCaprio

C I N E M A F O R P E A C E

For years, ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocamo has been a very dedicated member of the CINEMA FOR

PEACE International Committee. He profoundly acknowledges the potential of fi lm as a medium. Therefore

Luis Moreno-Ocampo strongly advocates for the presentation of fi lms illustrating current challenges of our

global society to a worldwide audience.

The Hague Screenings: For the fi rst time ever fi lmmakers present movies at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The

Hague on April 22 and 23. The Cinema for Peace Foundation will screen in cooperation with Amnesty International’s “Movies

that Matter” the documentary about Ugandan child soldiers “Children of War” by Bryan Single and the feature movie “Five

Minutes of Heaven” about reconciliation in Northern Ireland by Oliver Hirschbiegel.

Kampala Screenings: With the ICC having been founded in 1998, states parties to this Court meet in Kampala, Uganda for the

fi rst Review Conference of the ICC at the end of May 2010. The purpose of the Conference is to evaluate the ICC, and make

it even more effective in prosecuting the world‘s most horrendous criminals. Those who attend will discuss the Court‘s past

and future, and will propose changes to the Court‘s founding treaty, the Rome Statute. Cinema for Peace was asked by the ICC

to also screen on this rare occasion movies depicting the fate of victims, one selected to show the delegates, and a series of

fi lms chosen to be screened to the public.

A Special Evening on Justice: Furthermore, on the occasion of the opening of the Conference, the Victims Trust Fund at the

ICC and the Cinema for Peace Foundation jointly stage “A Special Evening on Justice” on 30 May at the Munyonyo resort, the

offi cial conference site in Kampala. This events aims to effectively lend the voice of fi lm artists to the victims of crimes against

humanity, wherever they may occur, and to raise funds for the work of the Victims Trust Fund, which works to create circum-

stances under which victims may effi ciently claim reparations from their perpetrators and to enable victims to get involved in

the overall criminal justice process.

The ‘International Green Film Award’ pays tribute to an extraordinarily inspiring achievement of a

fi lm artist in the domains of environment and climate protection. This particular achievement may

go far beyond the world of fi lm, thus motivating the public to develop their own commitments to

protect natural resources based on the general understanding of the interconnectedness of all life

on earth. Patron and spiritual father of this award is President Mikhail Gorbachev.

In 2009 the fi rst ‘International Green Film Award’ was presented to Leonardo DiCaprio by Nobel Peace Prize winner President

Mikhail Gorbachev for his long lasting dedication to green issues, as well as for his groundbraking fi lm “The 11th Hour”. In

his speech Leonardo DiCaprio called for more environmental dedication:

„Peace is not only the absence of war, but also the absence of poverty,

the importance of an educated society, and a clean and sustainable environment.”

In 2010 the ‘International Green Film Award’ was presented by

Mikhail Gorbachev and Leonado DiCaprio to “Crude”, directed

by Director Joe Berlinger. This harrowing documentary pictu-

res the story of a lawsuit by tens of thousands of Ecuadorans

against Chevron over the contamination of the Ecuadorean

Amazon.

Cinema for Peace – 9 years of dedication and action

Cinema for Peace – Previous Highlights

After nine years since the launch of Cinema for Peace, our focus is as topical as ever. Over the years, the Cinema for Peace ini-

tiative has received outstanding praise from the global public. In 2006 George Clooney announced that his Oscar-nominated

film “Good Night, and Good Luck” was prompted by the reaction to his visit to Cinema for Peace: “… you can honestly say that

you were an active participant in us making this film!” Many exceptional films have received our highest accolade, the Cinema for

Peace Award, including Danis Tanovic for his Oscar-winning film “No Man’s Land” in 2003, which Cinema for Peace distributed

in the Germany speaking territories. In 2003 Dustin Hoffman’s speech caused worldwide media interest – proving the ability

of artists to influence public opinion on a global level. Main areas of activities include:

• Fighting Poverty: In 2006 Richard Curtis received the Cinema for Peace Award for Best Director

for “The Girl in the Café”. Cinema for Peace produced a German remake of this film in 2007, tele-

vised at prime-time. 5 million viewers saw it two weeks prior to the G8 summit in Germany, when it

provided a clear message to fight extreme poverty. In 2007 Cinema for Peace also supported several

G8-campaigns including an Africa-Campaign with Europe’s biggest selling newspaper BILD and Bob

Geldof, who was Editor in Chief for one day at the end of the campaign.

• Furthering Knowlegde: The film “Letter to Anna”, initiated at the Cinema for Peace Gala in 2007,

premiered at the Berliner Ensemble before Cinema for Peace 2008. It received the Audience Award at

the ONE World Film Festival 2008 in Prague by Vaclav Havel. In 2009 President Mikhail Gorbachev

inaugurated the Cinema for Peace School Film Catalogue on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of

the Fall of the Berlin Wall to promote cinematographic education in schools worldwide.

• Promoting Climate Protection: The ‘International Green Film Award’, initially presented to Leonar-

do DiCaprio in 2009, is now established as one of the most important accolades at Cinema for Peace.

• Helping to Achieve International Justice: Since 2009 the Prosecutor of the International Criminal

Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, presents the Cinema for Peace Award for Justice at Cinema for Peace

each year.

Cinema for Peace distributes valuable movies (for example, the Oscar-winning anti-war satire No Man’s Land), as well as produ-

cing valuable movies itself with inspiring messages. In 2007, together with Richard Curtis and SAT1, Cinema for Peace produced

the G8-feature movie Suddenly Gina, which was seen by nearly 5 million TV viewers and was sold worldwide with all revenues

going to Schools for Africa, an initiative by UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. In 2008, our documentary A Letter

to Anna about the murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaja directed and produced by Eric Bergkraut, had its premiere

on February 2008, after being initiated on stage at Cinema for Peace 2007!

Right before the 9th Cinema for Peace Gala in February 2010 upon the initiative of committee member Richard Curtis Cinema

for Peace produced the German adaption of the “Robin Hood Tax” spot, called “Steuer gegen Armut”, directed by Maria von

Heland, with Jan Josef Liefers and Heike Makatsch acting as the main characters. This spot aims to raise awareness for the

potential tool of a small tax on bank businesses in order to successfully fight extreme poverty on earth. Cinema for Peace is also

involved in promoting this spot by distributing it as part of an extensive publicity campaign on this issue, originally executed

by Oxfam, and presenting it to various audiences at different screening occasions.Title page of “BILD”

her Moscow apartment. Anna’s death is a personal drama; she had just found out that she was going to be a grandmother.

Her death, however, is also a political act, since Politkovskaya was an outspoken critic of the president.

Letter to Anna is also, however, a political film that shows how the Russian government turns back the wheel of history. The

film sheds dramatic light on the state of freedom of the press and opinion in Putin’s Russia. With: Vera

Politkovskaya(daughter), Ilya Politkovski (son), Alexander Politkovski (ex-husband), Sainap Gaschaieva (friend), Andrei

Mironov (friend/peoples’ rights activist), Elena Tregubova (exiled journalist), Boris Beresovski (oligarch and exilied oppo-

ser of the regime), Garry Kaparov (former chess champion and leader of the opposition), Yuri Tschaika (Russian General

State Prosecutor, former justice secretary).

2007: I don’t feel like Dancing by Evi Goldbrunner and Joachim Dollhopf

How to show the mechanism of war in a few minutes?

This was the question the film students Goldbrunner

and Dollhopf asked themselves when confronted with

the Cinema for Peace shortfilm competition Movies that

matter. Their story tells just a minor incident among the

cruelties of war which you wouldn’t even find in the

newspapers. But it makes the point of how people’s

characters change within an inhumane environment

where people separate into villains or victims and encounter each other as enemies or objects. And amidst the destruction

it implies the hope that people may wake up and begin to see each other as persons with a history again. Winning the

Cinema for Peace Talent Award 2007 they were given the opportunity to realize their idea and make a short film which can be

understood without dialogue.

2007: Suddenly Gina

Suddenly Gina, a remake of the hugely successful BBC movie The Girl in the Café by Richard Curtis, is the story of the shy

workaholic bureaucrat Laurens and his life-changing relationship with the unconventional girl Gina. As advisor to the

German Finance Minister, Laurens spends his entire day brooding over documents. Then one day he meets an enigmatic

woman named Gina, who intrigues Laurens with her sheer vitality. Suddenly aware of everything that has been missing from

his life, Laurens now faces a difficult choice – could he possibly give up his career for love? The film features Julia Jentsch ,

Jan Josef Liefers, Iris Berben, Catherine Deneuve, Andrea Sawatzki and Jürgen Heinrich.

The reopening of this urgently needed place for intercultural dialogue in the West Bank will take place prospectively in April

2011. With the outbreak of the first Intifada, the old Jenin cinema was closed in 1987. Now, Ismael Khatib and a group of

enthusiastics are bringing this venue back to life. When the film Heart of Jenin was awarded with the Cinema for Peace Award

for the Most Valuable Documentary 2009, jury members and prize winners such as Mikhail Gorbachev and

Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) were told about the idea of “Cinema Jenin” and have offered their support, just

as Cinema for Peace.

Zarganar, the leading Burmese comedian, film actor and director, was put into prison for his remarks on the military

regime. In September 2006, Zarganar was banned from performing publicly or participating in any kind of entertainment

related work. He was arrested in June 2008 for speaking to foreign media about the situation of millions of people left

homeless after a cyclone devastated the Irrawaddy delta. In November 2008 he was sentenced to 59 years in prison,

convicted of “public order offenses”. In February 2009, following the appeals by his family, the court reduced the sentence

to 35 years… Acclaimed director Rex Bloomstein (KZ) decided to bring public attention to this

case by producing a documentary about “Zarganar”, with whom he had worked in Burma for

another film. When Channel 4 had to withdraw the financing for this project due to the econo-

mic crisis, Cinema for Peace contacted leading comedians in America and Europe to raise

awareness for Zarganar’s plight and the duty to take immediate action. Cinema for Peace

initiated that Michael Mittermeier, leading comedian in Germany and dedicated activist for

humanitarian causes, has agreed to step in as producer and save the project. The premiere of

“Zarganar” is scheduled for summer 2010.
