SEEING RED: Following last night’s 4-1 loss to the Reds in the series
opener, the Dodgers dropped to 1-2 in their six-game homestand against
Arizona (1-1) and Cincinnati (0-1) and have lost four of their last five
games. The last time Los Angeles started the season going 16-21 or
worse in its first 37 games of the year was in 2013, when the club went
15-22. After the slow start, the 2013 Dodgers won the National League
West division and reached the National League Championship Series
against the St. Louis Cardinals. Following the weekend series against
the Reds and a travel day on Monday, the Boys in Blue will begin a six-
game road trip with a couple of three-game series with the Marlins
(Tuesday-Thursday) and the Nationals (Friday-Sunday).
Despite the loss to the Reds last night, which snapped an eight-
game winning streak against Cincinnati, the Dodgers have won
17 of 20 games against the Redlegs since the start of the 2015
campaign. Los Angeles has also gone 9-1 in its last 10 games
at Dodger Stadium against the Reds since August 14, 2015.
The Boys in Blue swept the season series in 2017, 6-0, which
was the first time the club had accomplished such a feat since
2006, when the club also took all six-games.
The Dodgers tonight will host their third and final special event
theme night of the homestand, as they will celebrate UCLA
Night. This special event ticket package includes an exclusive
co-branded UCLA-Dodger t-shirt, which can be purchased at
Dodgers.com/UCLA. The UCLA Spirit Squad will be on-hand
to greet fans at the gates, while the PAC-12 and 2018 National
Champions, the UCLA Gymnastics Team, will be recognized
on the field prior to tonight’s game.
BRINGING THE BAND BACK: Starting this evening, the club will
honor the 30th anniversary of the 1988 World Series champions during
Alumni Weekend presented by Security Benefit, with 16 members of the
’88 club expected to participate in the festivities and the Alumni Game
on Saturday, May 12. Fans will also have autograph and photo
opportunities with Alumni at Dodger Stadium entrances prior to the
game tonight and Sunday. More information on Alumni Weekend
presented by Security Benefit can be found online at
www.dodgers.com/alumnigame.
MAEKEN MAGIC: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda will take the
mound tonight as he will make his seventh start of the season against the
Reds. Maeda last pitched on May 5 in Monterrey, Mexico against the
Padres, allowing three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings with seven
strikeouts as he did not factor in the decision. In six starts this season,
Maeda has gone 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA (14 ER/30.1 IP) and has struck out
39 batters against just 11 walks in 30.1 innings. The Osaka, Japan native
has posted a 11.57 strikeout per nine innings as a starter, which currently
ranks fifth best among National League starters, while his 3.55 strikeout-
to-walk ratio ranks 17th best in the Senior Circuit.
In two career games (one start) against the Reds, Maeda has
gone 1-0 with one save and has allowed just two runs in 9.0
innings (2.00 ERA), while striking out 11 batters against just
one walk. He has held Cincinnati hitters to a .182 average,
while posting a 0.78 WHIP.
In three starts at Dodger Stadium this season, Maeda has
posted a 1-1 record with a 1.98 ERA (3 ER/13.2 IP) and has
struck out 19 batters against just four walks. Throughout his
career, Maeda has performed very well at the Ravine, going
16-7 with one save and posting a 2.98 ERA, while holding
hitters to a .227 average in 32 career games (29 starts). He has
also struck out 182 batters against just 45 walks in 169.0 career
innings at home.
Since he made his Major League debut in 2016, Maeda is tied
with Clayton Kershaw, Carlos Martinez and Tanner Roark for
the sixth most wins in the NL, trailing just Max Scherzer (42),
Jake Arrieta (35), Jon Lester (34), Stephen Strasburg (34) and
Zack Greinke (33).
THE HISTORY OF BLUE & RED: During the 1970s, the Reds and
Dodgers combined to win the National League Western Division nine
out of 10 seasons. Cincinnati’s “Big Red Machine” won in 1970, 1972-
73, 1975-76 and 1979. The Dodgers’ “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” won
in 1974, 1977-78. The Giants won the West in 1971, finishing one game
ahead of the Dodgers.
THE MAN THEY CALL SILVER FOX: Dodger infielder Chase
Utley provided the club with their lone run of the game with an RBI
single in the first inning and collected two of the team’s four hits in last
night’s contest. Utley has seen success throughout his career against the
Reds, as he has slashed .297/.365/.544 with 53 runs, 18 doubles, 20
homers and 58 RBI in 88 career games. The 39-year-old has reached
base safely in 12 of his last 13 games against Cincinnati since August
26, 2015, hitting .442 (19-for-43) with 13 runs, two doubles, two homers
and six RBI along with a .547 on-base percentage and a .628 slugging
percentage.
Utley has also seen success against tonight’s opposing pitcher,
Matt Harvey, who is making his Reds debut, having gone 6-
for-18 (.333) with a double, a homer and two RBI along with
three hit-by-pitches against the righty.
IN A PINCH: The Dodger bench has proven to be very resourceful for
Dodger manager Dave Roberts as the club currently leads the Majors
with 23 hits by a pinch-hitter and ranks among the league leaders in
pinch-hit average (.307, 5th), RBI (12, T-1st), OBP (.416, 6th) and OPS
(.829, 4th).
Chase Utley has been very reliable when being called upon off
the bench, as he has recorded seven hits as pinch-hitter this
season, which is the most in the big leagues. His .583 batting
average (7-for-12) as a pinch-hitter ranks third in the Majors,
while his five RBI is the second most in the bigs.
PUNCH’EM OUT: The Dodgers’ 372 strikeouts and 3.10 strikeout-to-
walk ratio as a pitching staff ranks second in the National League,
trailing only the Nationals 384 punchouts and 3.28 strikeout-to-walk
ratio.
THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: Despite going hitless in last night’s
contest (0-for-3, BB), Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp currently holds the
third best batting average in the National League (9th, ML) with a .333
mark, trailing just the Phillies’ Odubel Herrera (.353) and the Braves’
Nick Markakis (.340). In 35 games this season, Kemp is slashing
.333/.376/.537 with 13 runs, seven doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI
in his return to the Dodger organization. He is currently tied with Chris
Taylor, Yasmani Grandal and Kiké Hernández for the most longballs
on the club, while also leading the Dodgers in batting average, slugging
percentage and OPS (.913, 13th NL). The 33-year-old has 264 career
home runs, which ties him for 201st on the all-time list, one behind
George Bell, Brian McCann and Matt Stairs.
Kemp’s 1,224 hits rank eighth in L.A. Dodger history and his
222 doubles ranks seventh, one shy of Ron Cey.
Thus far, Kemp has been one of the most valuable acquisitions
of the offseason:

READING IS LEADING: Earlier today, Dodger pitchers Alex Wood
and Ross Stripling helped recognize and presented awards to Para Los
Niños (PLN) top readers from the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation
(LADF) “Reading is Leading” Challenge. This school year PLN
students have combined to read over 25,000 books as part of the LA
Reads program, which is a joint initiative between the Dodgers and
LADF to help address the literacy crisis in Los Angeles by getting
children excited about reading. The Dodgers “Reading Champions”
challenge, will take place from April to August, further motivating 1st-
8th graders to read. Students who read more than 30 minutes per day
will be rewarded with incentives to include monthly opportunities to be
on field at Dodger Stadium. Students and families can learn more about
the program at Dodgers.com/LAReads.
