The Lady in the Van Fri 20 November – Thu 3 December

Based on the successful stage play, The Lady in the Van is a delightful cinematic adaptation of Alan Bennett’s homageto his friendship with the cantankerous homeless woman who became an integral part of his life. Directed by NicholasHytner (who also brought Bennett’s The History Boys to the big screen) and starring the one and only Dame MaggieSmith, this is a witty and moving portrait of the bond that can develop between strangers.

Moving into his new Camden home in the early1970s, the introverted Bennett cautiously gets toknow his neighbours. They quickly warn him aboutMary (Smith), a demanding and prickly elderly ladywho lives in her rundown old van on the leafy crescent. Partially out of kindness and partially out of guilt, Bennett (Alex Jennings) finds himself becoming more and more involved with the plight of this unusual woman. She too takes a shine to Bennett – well, in so far as she tolerates him slightly more than she does anyone else – andmoves into his driveway. Initially proposed as a temporary arrangement, she ends up staying for 15 years.

Playful from beginning to end, the film has a poignant story of a lost soul at its heart; one which we’re told is “mostly true”. Smith, reprising the role she played on stage, is marvelous and Jennings, who has played Bennett before, is droll and dry to absolute perfection.

Steve Jobs Fri 20 November – Thu 3 December

With the talents of filmmaker Danny Boyle, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and actors Michael Fassbender and Kate Winsleton board, we’re almost guaranteed to see the words Steve Jobs appearing on the next Oscar shortlist.

Divided into three parts, the film follows Jobs’ career as he launches new products: the Mac in 1984 (this section wasshot on 16mm), the NeXT black cube computer (shot on 35mm) and the iMac G3 (shot in HD). With each episode welearn more about the complex man and the people who shaped his life – his early days working with Steve Wozniack(Seth Rogen), his troubled relationship with his daughter Lisa, his loyal and constant marketing manager Joanna Hoffman (Winslet) and his destructive competition with colleague John Sculley (Jeff Daniels).

Not surprisingly, with Boyle at the helm this is a dynamic, technical triumph and Sorkin brings an intriguing darkness to this portrait of a genius who revolutionised our contemporary world. Fassbender gives an Oscar-worthy turn asJobs, his performance is an assured blend of confidence and steely determination with a hint of pathetic isolation. This is a fascinating portrait of a man who was described in equal measure as a visionary and a megalomaniac, someone who stopped at nothing to achieve success.

Les Anarchistes Mon 23 – Thu 26 November

Elie Wajeman’s second feature is an intriguing crime dramaset at the turn of the 20th century which brings together twoof the most exciting acting talents working in French cinematoday, A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim and Blue is the WarmestColour’s Adele Exarchopoulos.

Corporal Jean Albertini’s (Rahim) working class roots makehim the perfect candidate for an undercover assignment thatinvolves infiltrating a cell of young revolutionaries in Paris.Unassuming and unremarkable, it doesn’t take long before he is taken under the wing of Elisée Mayer (Swann Arlaud). As friendship grows between the two men, Jean begins tofeel conflicted about his assignment, not least because of his attraction to Elisée’s girlfriend Judith (Exarchopoulos). The constant threat of exposure coupled with increased demands from his superiors for more information take theirtoll on Jean’s psyche. When the group begins to plot theirmost daring action ever, he is faced with deciding on whichside his loyalties truly lie.

Rahim has a brooding presence that literally sizzles on thescreen alongside Exarchopoulos. Although featuring qualitydetail in terms of costume and set design, this is far from astuffy period drama and the energetic, contemporary storyseems just as relevant today.

Taxi Tehran Mon 23 November – Thu 3 December

Forbidden from making films for 20 years by theIranian authorities, director Jafar Panahi defiantly continues to ply his craft. His latest film, TaxiTehran, is a delightful portrait of life in contemporaryTehran, shot entirely inside a yellow cab. With twocameras fixed to the dashboard, the film sees a diverse cross-section of the city’s inhabitants comeon board as passengers, with Panahi himself astaxi driver.

Not a particularly good driver, Panahi is unsure ofthe routes to well-known Tehran landmarks and is less than diligent about collecting fares and delivering customers to their destinations. “I’ll letyou out here and you can get another cab,” hesays more than once. This creates a lot of turnover, and a series of “chance” encounters with fellow citizens, including two older women carrying goldfish in an open glass bowl. Conversationswithin the car cover a huge range of topics, fromcapital punishment to illegal video piracy, to therules and regulations of how to make a correct Islamic film. An absolute delight is Pahani’s youngniece Hana, a little girl who is wiser than her yearswith a sharp and witty sense of humour.

Faced with restrictions most filmmakers couldnever imagine, Panahi has taken a simple conceptand turned it into a revealing and very entertainingpolitical statement. The fact that the film was made, edited and snuck out of Tehran is a testament tohis courage and that of his team.

Hand Gestures Fri 27 November – Thu 3 December

Following the creation of artist Velasco Vitali’s famous dog sculptures, from wax to glazed bronze at the Battaglia Artistic Foundry in Milan, Hand Gestures is an astonishingly beautiful documentary about makers and making.

Over the centuries many technological innovations havecome about in art, yet, even today, in order to create a sculpture in bronze, it is necessary to take the same stepsas were followed thousands of years ago. These steps are not taught in school, but are passed on in the ancientoral tradition and through apprenticeships from artisans. This documentary observes and feels the work of the foundry: a place where the past and present share the samegestures.

Hand Gestures is a meditation on the tradition of craft, care and artistry still very much alive today. Mixing archivefootage and interviews, the film takes us behind the scenes at every step of the process, viewing the work of a groupof skilled artisans at the 100-year old foundry, and revealing the ancient traditions of bronze sculpture which remain unchanged since the 6th century.

Sunset Song Fri 4 – Thu 17 December

This big screen adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Sunset Song, one of the most well-known works of Scottish literature, is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year.

Even when it was first published in 1932, SunsetSong was already describing a way of rural life thatwas fast disappearing. At the heart of the story isChris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn), a lively, intelligentyoung woman who gives up a career as a teacherto remain on the family farm. Her father John (Peter Mullan) is a harsh man and after her mother’s death, life for Chris is undeniably hard. When he passes away suddenly, she surprises many in the village by marrying local farm workerEwan (Kevin Guthrie), but when domestic bliss is interrupted by news of war, Ewan is called up to serve in the armyand their lives are changed forever.

Directed by another of our national treasures, filmmaker Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea) and shot in glorious70mm, this is a faithful recreation of a story beloved by generations of Scottish readers. Using a palette of greys, browns and dusty greens, Davies never treads into sentiment, keeping Sunset Song firmly rooted in the land. Deyn, a former model, perfectly captures the strength of character which made Chris an inspiration for those who love thebook. And although in danger of being typecast, there is no other actor who could possibly play the severe patriarchbetter than Mullan.

Bridge of Spies Fri 4 – Thu 17 December

Over the past 44 years Steven Spielberg has become one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. From Jaws and Jurassic Park to Schindler’s List and Lincoln, his films are always a grandiose spectacle, whether theyare action packed adventures or historical biopics.

Based upon a true story, Bridge of Spies is a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller that opens at the height of the ColdWar, as KGB intelligence officer Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) is arrested for espionage in the USA. When a CIA spy-plane is shot down over Soviet airspace and the pilot is arrested by the Communist regime, lawyer James B.Donovan (Hanks) is recruited by the CIA and tasked with negotiating the exchange and release of the prisoners,in a time rife with fear and suspicion.

Bridge of Spies is a fantastic addition to Spielberg’s legacy as one of Hollywood’s finest directors, with magnificentperformances by Hanks and especially from Wolf Hall’s Rylance. While Hanks might have started out as a comedicactor, the latter half of his 35 year career has seen him take on much darker roles and with Bridge of Spies, Spielbergand Hanks’ fourth collaboration as director and actor, it is obvious the pair have a very unique and comfortable working relationship, propelling this excellent historical drama to another level.

Black Mass Fri 4 – Thu 17 December

Based on the incredible true story of the alliance between James ‘Whitey’ Bulger and the local law enforcement, BlackMass is a twisted tale of power, greed and corruption – the darker side of the American dream. The film stars a virtuallyunrecognisable Johnny Depp whose screen charisma is undeniable – his role as Whitey, Boston’s crime boss, is perfect casting.

Based on a book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, the Boston Globe journalists who first broke the story, Black Mass isstructured around interviews given by Bulger’s associates and members of the gang. On Boston’s Irish Southside, theBulger family were legendary for decades; Billy Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch), a successful politician who served 18years as the President of the Massachusetts Senate, and brother Whitey, the criminal mastermind behind the rackets.Thrown into the mix was John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), their childhood friend newly appointed to the FBI. Still in aweof the person who used to take care of him on the streets as a child, John found a way to get Whitey on the books asan informant, ignoring his violent behaviour and reaping the financial rewards of their relationship. But, when an internal investigation threatens to expose their arrangement, everyone is left fending for themselves.

Black Mass is very much an ensemble piece with the Boston backdrop and terrible 70s fashion helping to paint a veryconvincing picture. The secondary characters add texture and colour to each scene, and Edgerton and Depp play offeach other beautifully in what is an unsettling but intensely gripping watch.

Carol Fri 11 – Thu 24 December

In the hands of Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There) this adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Priceof Salt, is as lush and beautiful as it is cool and melancholic. A story of secret love, against a backdrop of 1950s glamour, Carol features two central performances by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara which we’re sure will be recognised come Oscar time.

Shopping for a Christmas present in a Manhattandepartment store, well-to-do housewife Carol(Blanchett) meets shop girl Therese (Mara) andleaves her expensive gloves behind at thecounter, giving both women a perfect excuse to meet for lunch. Their attraction is undeniable from the beginning, butso are the obstacles in the path of this burgeoning romance. Carol’s divorce from Harge (Kyle Chandler) hasn’t beenfinalised, yet she still suggests that Therese spend the holiday with her in the family home. For Therese, a woman inher early 20s, Carol represents sophistication, excitement and mystery. But as their relationship develops it becomesclear that Carol’s life is far from perfect, with heartbreak ever present.

Living in a conservative society where same sex relationships were very much still taboo, Carol’s controlled exteriormasks loneliness and sadness, as well a steely determination not to compromise her heart – it is one of Blanchett’sbest ever performances. With a score by Carter Burwell, Super 16 photography by Ed Lachman and Sandy Powell’s incredible costumes, Carol is the whole package and one of the must-see films this awards season.

He Named Me Malala Fri 20 & Sun 22 November

Aged just 15 years old (she turned 18 this past July)Malala Yousafzei was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, pursued among extremists as a threat and a target. When she was shotin the head, Milala miraculously survived and was soonheralded as a transformative world figure, inspiring millions worldwide and becoming a leading campaignerfor girls’ education globally.

Melding candid interviews, footage from within Pakistanand vivid, hand-drawn animation, Malala’s memories of the past are brought to vibrant life in this film. The journey takes us from her early childhood, to making thebold decision (aged just 11) to blog for the BBC aboutlife as a girl in a Taliban-led city, to the Taliban’s shockingassassination attempt and her subsequent battle for life.

In Davis Guggenheim’s (An Inconvenient Truth) empowering portrait we see the Pakistani-born teenagerand youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner as a very realyoung girl – an alternately brave, compassionate, imperiled and fun-loving teen who simply insists on the right to live and learn... for everyone.

Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans Sun 6 & Mon 7 December

In June 1970, a decade before his death, film star Steve McQueen (The Great Escape, Bullitt) shot a vanity project called Le Mans. A hugely expensive undertaking,he wanted to create the ‘ultimate racing picture’ about the famous 24-hour race. It was a flop. The monosyllabic McQueen fell out with everyone involvedin the project, including his director, friends and family, and headed back to the safety of studio projects suchas The Towering Inferno.

This documentary tells the story of a life-changing sixmonths for McQueen, during which time his directorJohn Sturges quit the project, his marriage fell apart and his company faced potential bankruptcy. He alsolearned that he was at the top of Charles Manson’s‘death list’. The film – set to the soundtrack of McQueen’s voice – features never-before-seen footagethat was recently unearthed in a Parisian basement, alongside interviews with five-time winner of Le Mansand former McQueen housemate, Derek Bell; DavidPiper, who lost a leg during filming; McQueen’s co-starin the film Sigi Rauch; and Jonathan Williams, who drovethe camera car at the Le Mans race in 1970.

Perfect viewing for both fans of racing and of the moviestar, this is a fascinating watch.

Fear Of 13 Thu 10 & Fri 11 December

Award-winning filmmaker David Sington’s (In the Shadowof the Moon) latest film – a portrait of death row inmateNick Yarris – takes a minimalist approach which shines aspotlight not only on an incredible story, but also its teller.More monologue than documentary, Fear of 13 is utterlyspellbinding.

Nick, a convicted murderer who has spent more than 20 years on death row, is a natural born storyteller. Softlyspoken, articulate and philosophical, he considers theunbelievable set of events that make up his life. There is a thespian quality to his performance as he recallsevents in his life in depth, from the two years he spent in solitary confinement to the 25 days spent on the runas an escaped prisoner. So great is Nick’s skill thatthere’s a poetic surrealism to his yarn which he compounds by adding his own dramatic sound effects.Counting his time in prison in the number of words hecould learn each day, his new vocabulary includedtriskaidekaphobia, the fear of 13. We also find out thathe discovered a passion for literature and, in particular, adventure stories. But, just as you start to feel comfortable in Nick’s presence, he reveals the darkestsecrets of all and everything he’s told you previouslytakes on a new hue.

Words : Walls Sun 29 November, 13:00

Part road movie, part performance video, part travelogue, Words : Walls is a documentary about a2012 trip through the scarred landscapes of the WestBank. A group of poets and singers – including two ofScottish poetry’s leading lights: Liz Lochhead (NationalPoet for Scotland) and William Letford – encounter themany and varied forms that resistance takes throughmeetings with artists, activists and those just trying tosurvive in almost unbearable conditions.

Faced with the effects of the Israeli occupation – frompetty harassment, to home demolitions, to aggressionand violence – none could leave with the same innocence with which they arrived. The hospitality of the Palestinians, coupled with the beauty of their country and culture, make the trip a curiously celebratory affair, as well as a chance to establish a dialogue and exchange ideas.

This whistle-stop tour takes in a stay at Aida refugeecamp, a visit to the last remaining shepherds in the once fruitful Jordan Valley, meeting the inspiring youth of The Freedom Theatre, and a tear gas filled demo atthe apartheid wall. Barely glimpsing the real struggles of existing in modern day Palestine, each artist seesmore than enough to change their view of the world irrevocably.

Like overcooked poultry, Brussel sprouts, indigestion and theQueen’s Speech, It’s a Wonderful Life is a Christmas tradition, and one best enjoyed on the big screen!

Far from being a saccharine, sentimental wallow, this film, in littleover two hours, manages to run the gamut of human emotions, from total joy to utter despair.
