TRANSCRIPT
CICan Applied Research Survey, 2016-17
Reporting Period: April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017
Welcome to Colleges and Institutes Canada’s (CICan) annual survey on applied research activity undertaken by Canadian colleges, institutes, polytechnics and cégeps.
The information collected will enable CICan to highlight to the federal government, stakeholders and the public the valuable applied research activities conducted by colleges and institutes. The information will be used to support advocacy with the federal government for increased investments in college and institute applied research, and to respond to federal government consultations and various information requests.
For an optimal survey experience, we recommend you have information related to the following topics close at hand before starting the survey:
• Applied research centres;
• Products, processes, prototypes and services produced by your institution;
• Applied research funding, including sources of funding
• Numbers of faculty and students involved in applied research;
• Information related to applied research partnerships.
Clicking on words in purple throughout the survey will pop up the relevant definitions.
A PDF of the survey questions can be downloaded here.

4. (b) Identify the number of
applied research projects Each applied research project consists of
a set of research and development activities, is organized and managed for a specific purpose, and has its own objectives and expected outcomes, even at
the lowest level of formal activity. Applied research projects meet the following five criteria: 1. To be aimed at new findings (novel) 2. To be based on original, not obvious, concepts and hypotheses (creative) 3. To be
uncertain about the final outcome (uncertain) 4. To be planned and budgeted (systematic) 5. To lead to results that could be possibly reproduced
(transferable and/or reproducible)
undertaken at your institution per area. If applicable
also indicate the number of projects in which clean or
green processes and technologies were involved.
