I hope this mid‐summer missive finds everyone chillin’ while savoring these hot, lazy days! It’s a cat’s life, I go a tell ya! Of course, I admit that I’m spoiled with so many adoring fans a ending 

to my every whim. But my feline pals at ASAP are s ll dreaming of a life where a cage isn’t “home,” wai ng 

for the chance to share a loving life with a new family. And the ki ens this year?!! Darn . . . there are just SO MANY of them!! I hear my human caretakers talking in worried whispers about how slow adop ons are—and how sad it is for these energe c ki ens to grow up in cages at a shel‐ter. Of course, I personally just wish those pesky ki ens would clear out so I can have some peace and quiet! I know, I know . . . I’m just a crotch‐ety old alley cat some mes!

When Melanie and Thomas Neale decided to move to Italy this past January, they didn’t think twice about bringing their beloved ki ens with them.  

The couple had adopted Ziggy and Marley from ASAP al‐most two years ago. The siblings had been found living on the street and were very scared of humans. ASAP foster mom Karen Zwieke nursed them back to health and taught them that humans were pre y great to be around. For the Neales it was love at first sight and they didn’t hesitate to adopt them. As Melanie wrote to ASAP, “We are so blessed to have Ziggy and Marley in our lives. They bring us much joy and laughter!”  

The Neales donated their cat trees to ASAP for foster families to use, and then headed off to Italy with their ki es. A er an adjustment period following the move, the family has now se led in nicely in their new home in the historical district of Guardia Sanframondi in southern Italy. 

 

A couple of months ago, Melanie started no cing some stray cats in their neigh‐borhood. They seemed very hungry but quite comfortable around people. A er awhile she observed some of the neighbors feeding them food scraps. Remem‐bering Ziggy’s and Marley’s rough start in life, she decided to begin feeding the strays in order to supplement what they were ge ng from her neighbors.  

Ziggy and Marley watch the comings and goings of the local cats from the terraz‐zo and the front window, but do not growl at them, which is very different from how they used to behave. Back in Santa Barbara, the siblings would growl at any cat they saw. According to Melanie, “I think they know these cats are down and out and somehow feel a special kinship with them.”   

Currently, Melanie is feeding three stray cats, along with a stray dog, and they have become such regulars that they now have names. There’s the one she calls Lovey, who is very sociable; Hissy, so hungry that she hisses and meows over food, and toothless Limpy, who holds up one back leg when he walks. Melanie and Thomas have been charmed by these Italian cats, who are full of character and personality.   

Unfortunately, Melanie tells us, there is no ani‐mal shelter in the area. The 

cats need to be sterilized and vaccinated. In addi on, many are in need of medical treatment. It’s a sobering reminder of how lucky the Santa Barbara community is to have or‐ganiza ons like ASAP.  

This sen ment is echoed by Melanie, who closes by wri ng, “I want to thank everyone at ASAP for all the great things you do for Santa Barbara’s stray cats. It’s a wonder‐ful service that you offer!”

We think ASAP dedicated supporters John and Diane Kalstrom have set the bar a li le higher with their unique bathroom wallpaper (pictured le ), which is made up of ASAP Sponsor‐A‐Cat Cer ficates. Their bathroom is truly a happy place to visit.  

The roots of the couple’s rela onship with ASAP go back to Diane’s late mother, Jan Bisol, a long me supporter and adopter of ASAP cats. Both John and Diane ini ally volunteered with ASAP cleaning cages. Their first ASAP adop on was a neighbor‐hood stray that they found and brought to ASAP to make sure there wasn’t an own‐er searching for him. When no owner turned up, they were thrilled to officially adopt “Shortcut.” Shortcut lives with the couple in their Santa Barbara home, along with three other cats.  

When they first bought their home, they intended to repaint the downstairs bath‐room, but never quite got around to it. A er becoming ASAP Super Sponsors in 2010, John and Diane decided that their cat cer ficates were the perfect bath‐room wallpaper! Each  me they visit that bathroom, they are reminded of the many cats that they sponsor, that they have sponsored in the past, and the ones adopted by loving families.  

What amazing dedica on to our ASAP Sponsor‐A‐Cat Program (and interior de‐sign)! We hope that others will be in‐spired by the Kalstroms’ story.

It never seems quite like summer at ASAP un l we are over‐flowing with ki ens! Like every year, queens and ki ens started arriving at our shelter in early spring—but we op ‐mis cally held our breath, thinking that we were seeing few‐er ki ens this season. But we were so wrong!! This summer is barely underway and already, 41 fantas c foster families have cared for over 200 ki ens.  

All ASAP ki ens are cared for by foster families while they grow big enough to reach the all‐important two‐pound mark, at which point they are ready for spay/neuter and then adop on. The  me and dedica on of our fosters are remarkable. This year 12% of ki ens taken into ASAP’s fos‐ter program have been under three weeks of age and re‐quired around the clock bo le‐feeding and care. ASAP would not be able to provide this service to our community without our commi ed fosters, adopters, and donors, like you!

Are cats smarter than dogs? The debate rages on. But they DO have us wrapped around their li le fingers (errr, paws) quite nicely, don’t they? Cats are smart enough to have figured out how to train us. Feed me now, pet me here, the list is endless. Well, volunteers at ASAP are turning the tables on them, and demand‐ing tricks for their treats! And the cats are loving it!  

A newly formed feline behavior team at ASAP has been using clicker training, a method commonly used to train dogs, to work with the cats. Clicker training is posi ve reinforcement training, using a click noise to mark behavior we like. The click is like saying to the cat, “That’s right, and you win the prize!”  

With clicker training, a cat can learn to do everything from giving nose kisses to high fives. Let’s face it, who 

can resist a cat who can give you a high five? But the goal of the new training program isn’t about teaching them to do “stupid pet tricks.” It’s about building a rela onship. The clicker is a two‐way conversa on that means the same thing every  me. Each training session is a posi ve, and predictable, interac on that always works out well for the cat. ASAP volunteers work very hard to make every cat’s stay as stress‐free as possible.  

But the reality is that even for a well‐adjusted cat, life in a shelter cage can be hard and confusing. The structure of the shelter environment gives them so li le control over their lives. Clicker training reduces their feelings of helplessness by giving them an opportunity to act in a way that improves their situa on. This increases confidence in a  mid cat, reduces frustra on in a cat suffering from cage stress, and engages the mind of a bored cat.  

Besides all that, it’s just plain fun!   

Perhaps the greatest benefit with clicker training is the ability to reach those cats who have completely wit drawn psy‐chologically due to the stress of the shelter. Overwhelming fear, depression and stress can cause cats to withdraw so completely that they appear frozen. Clicker training provides a way to reach through this frozen state and engage the cats.  

Just ask Sasha. Before working with the behavior team, Sasha spent several months at the back of her cage, with‐drawn, depressed, immobile. She is s ll nervous with the ac vity at the shelter but recently took her first tenta ve steps outside of her cage and then promptly asked for her reward of choice—head scratches and pe ng! Through con nued work with the clicker, ASAP volunteers are op‐mis c that Sasha will gain confidence and be able to 

show her true personality to poten al adopters.  

Volunteers firmly believe there is a person out there for every cat. Our job is to help you find each other. Some‐mes the perfect match is hard to see even though it is

It’s not as far‐fetched as it might seem!

daily life at the shelter is so different than life in a home. It can be so hard for them to show us the pussycat inside when life is so uncertain.   

Pam was one of those shelter cats some mes labeled “unpredictable.” Sadly, her irritable behavior was not at all unpredictable or uncommon among cats that have spent a long  me at the shelter. Though we know the shelter is only a temporary safe haven for them un l they can find their forever homes, how can they know that?   

Some cats respond by becoming depressed. Pam re‐sponded by becoming grouchy. With all of the grumbling she did, and the occasional well‐ med swat or nip to an offending hand, she did a pre y good job of hiding the underlying sweet nature that we knew was there. She was the perfect candidate for clicker training. So we chose her to be our very first clicker class demo cat. A er all, we like a challenge!   

Pam was a brilliant pupil and surprised us all by learning to give a high five in about 15 minutes. And the surprises con nued; she was so excited by her new skill that she delighted in demonstra ng it to everyone. Or maybe she delighted in how well she had trained us to give her treats and a en‐on? Who knows? But it worked. She became very interac ve with the volunteers and public and soon picked her new 

family. Her adopters report that Pam “loves to run up and down the stairs, play with her many mousies and feather toys, and follow her new humans from room to room. She has even trained them to do high fives and rewards their efforts with big purrs and nuzzles.” She has clearly found her happy forever home.  

Shelter cats aren’t the only ones who can benefit from clicker training. Clicker training at home is a great way to build and strengthen the bond you share with your cat. It increases their sense of security, provides mental s mula on and relieves stress. 

 

Perhaps more importantly, clicker training is an effec‐ve way of addressing problem behaviors. One of the 

reasons cats have the reputa on of being untrainable is that we have been going about it the wrong way. Tradi onal punishment methods are simply not effec‐ve, or necessary, with cats. With clicker training we 

can address the underlying cause of the behavior and give them a more socially acceptable, and fun, way of mee ng their needs.   

So contrary to what you have heard, you CAN teach an old cat new tricks. Whether it’s teaching them self‐confidence, more social behaviors, or stupid pet tricks, ASAP volunteers are seeing firsthand how much cats benefit from the process. And each li le click brings them one step closer to their forever home.

Hey, Baba Louie, that's a head bu , not a nose kiss! 

For a year, ASAP volunteer Chris Lambrecht had been wai ng to adopt a cat or two, but each  me he got close, uncertainty with his job stopped him. Knowing that adop on is a long‐term commit‐ment, Chris wanted to make sure he could always be responsible for his feline companions. Finally, things se led down and he was ready for a long‐term commitment. The following is Chris’ account of what happened:  

I’d had my eye on cute Connie for a while so when she was returned to the shelter by an adopter, I decided she was the one. Despite being shy, she was very affec onate. She just needed a chance to become comfortable with her surroundings.  

Sarah was more like picking a name out of a hat. I hadn't interacted as much with her. I knew she was shy, had been at the shel‐ter a long  me, but was recep ve to pe ng under the right condi ons. Since I was commi ed to Connie, I needed to find an‐other calm, shy cat that wouldn't be overbearing. There may have been other cats that would have been a be er fit, but my mind was stuck on Sarah.   

Jump ahead to today: each morning I awake at about 5:45. Sarah is asleep next to me, and Connie is hopping up on the bed me‐owing in my face. Some days a er feeding them, I lie back down for a few minutes, but never for long! Soon they’re back on the bed purring and begging to be pe ed and brushed. Every morning I get to laugh because when Sarah starts purring loudly, she snorts and then suddenly sits up straight like she just realized she was doing something ridiculous!  

Not only have they become comfortable with me and their new environment, their bond with one another is growing stronger with each day. In short, I couldn't be happier with these two, and they seem to be quite happy with ME, too! 

Timing is everything!

According to the latest news reports and planning websites like O eat Bride and A Prac cal Wedding, the tradi onal wedding registry is undergoing a drama c overhaul. No longer do brides and grooms ask for candles cks, place se ngs, or bedding. Modern couples now ask for contribu ons toward honeymoons, gi  cer ficates for things like fancy dinners and zip‐lining, or — most wonderfully — for dona ons to favorite chari es and non‐profit organiza ons.  

Recently two separate couples asked their friends, families, and guests to donate to ASAP in lieu of wedding gi s: Katherine Farris and Alan Penner of Goleta, and Shayna Ingram and Vernon Lingley of Santa Barbara.  

Katherine and Alan, who will marry in late July 2013, adopted their cat Abby from ASAP. They have invited their guests to donate to ASAP as a tribute to them and their cat‐human family. Abby (the tabby) grac‐es their wedding website; the soon‐to‐be‐newlyweds note that Abby is anxiously awai ng their guests’ “RSVP.” This special couple is also sponsoring an ASAP cat for each table at their wedding recep on! Shayna, a long me shelter volunteer, and her partner Vernon also adopted their cats, Helo and Loki, from ASAP. When planning their October 2012 wedding, Vernon and Shayna felt strongly that they did not want gi s. Instead, they wanted their loved ones to donate to non‐profits dear to their hearts. One guest promptly gave ASAP $350 to “adopt a cage” in the couple’s honor. On their wedding day, Shayna wore a necklace with a sterling silver cat pendant to symbolize the couple’s fondness for ki es.  

Wedding season is in full swing in the Santa Barbara area (does it ever stop??), and ASAP has found itself swept up in the good dings. We are very grateful for these generous dona ons. Perhaps the next thing we will hear is that happy couples are using 

our famous Basil cat socks as wedding favors!

      Something tells ol’ Burt here that         you’re itching for more stories         about ASAP ki y alums. Using my       alley cat wiles, I have got the inside       skinny on some really cool adop on               stories!             Theresa and Chris opened their hotel room door at the Bacara Resort, north of Goleta, and found a “debonair” black and white cat wai ng for them, insistently demanding food. Mickey must have known that Theresa and Chris had a so  spot for felines because he chose their door out of hundreds. The couple quickly fell for this smart cat, but their op ons were limited for helping him because they were on vaca on!  

When they learned a Bacara employee had taken Mickey to ASAP, they quickly rushed over to visit him at our shelter. They vowed to return to adopt him a er his holding period passed, and once he had been given a gold star by our veter‐inarian and undergone the all important neuter surgery.  

The couple was as good as their word; they returned for Mickey and drove him to his new home to San Mateo, in the Bay Area. Theresa reports that Mickey acts like he’s lived in their house forever, and that their resident cat Binx is ad‐jus ng well to his new brother.  

Mickey’s story just brings a tear to my old, jaded alley cat eye—but don’t you dare tell Basil I’m going so ! 

Bart, now known as Clay (for his orange coloring) or Zorro (because of his fox‐like fluffy tail), had a bit of a “bad boy” reputa on at ASAP. He made his dislike of shelter life well known to all of the volunteers—but can you really blame him?! Bart also had a tendency to play a li le too rough, but once the volunteers started teaching him some manners he quickly won them over with his sweet, loving personality.  

Thanks to the hard work of ASAP volunteers helping to smooth out Bart’s “rough edges,” a wonderful adopter named Janet fell head over heels in love with him. He now has a huge window that’s ideal for bird watching and he sleeps at the foot of Janet’s bed. Bart also gets catnip pack‐ages from his feline penpals Luna and Fuego, also ASAP alumni. He has made himself right at home with Janet and as you can see in this photo, he appears to be “all smiles”—a truly contented ki y! Sounds to me like Bart scored a pre y sweet deal!
