Time flies at a busy school. It is so hard to believe that it is

already past the middle of October! As you read through our blog, visit our school, and

engage in conversations with your children about their school day, I hope you are as excited

as we are about the learning that is taking place both inside and outside of classrooms at

Churchville.

We are thankful for your patience and understanding as we re-organized classrooms to meet

Ministry expectations. We have now completed the required changes resulting from our re-

organization. We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible educational

experience for your children. Through September and October, teachers have used a variety

of instructional strategies with students to better identify their learning strengths and needs. This

year, we will continue to place a strong focus on developing numeracy skills and we are

continuing to focus on innovative assessment strategies that place a strong emphasis on

student understanding of the learning destination and our use of descriptive feedback to

better support their success. Please stay connected with your child’s teacher to better

understand how you can support your child’s learning as a partner in education. Our students

are excited to share their learning with you at our upcoming Student Led Conferences on

November 15th and 16th.

Churchville continues to be a wonderful and engaging place for students. Our staff and

volunteers help to make the school a caring place to teach and learn. Our extra-curricular

Thank you to our parents and community members who supported our Terry Fox events and to

our Terry Fox committee and our students for your hard work on this endeavour.

An inclusive and caring school climate is of utmost importance to us. Through our regular

messages on character education, we will continue to encourage students to show kindness

and respect to their peers, their parents, teachers and themselves. To support a positive school

climate, this year we will continue with our monthly character assemblies program. This month

we are focussing on “Determination”.

spare a half an hour one day each week during the school day to read with one or

two children in our Grade Two Superstar Reading Program. If you are interested in

BOOMERANG LUNCH

We are excited to announce that we are participating in the BOOMERANG LUNCH

program for all staff and students at Churchville Public School!!!

What is a BOOMERANG LUNCH?

A boomerang lunch is a lunch that has every piece of it return to its source. In other

words, everything in the lunch goes back home at the end of the day. This includes

leftover food, containers, recyclables, and/or garbage.

Why do we have a BOOMERANG program?

To increase awareness of the amount of waste created in one day’s lunch

To encourage the use of reusable containers

To discourage the use of disposable containers

Things to consider...

We can reduce the amount of garbage we produce by:

1. Using reusable containers

o Tupperware containers

o Reusable water bottles

o Reusable cutlery

2. Buy larger items of something – (e.g., chips, cookies etc.) and then transfer the

amount needed for each day into a reusable container instead of individually

packaged snack sized items.

Morning Kiss and Ride is a safe, efficient way to get children to school if we all work together. Please:

1) Drop students off only in the designated ‘Drop Off’ areas. All drop offs should be at a curb. Children should be dropped off on the side of the sidewalk or walkway.

2) Kindergarten parents, please use the drop off zone closest to the Kindergarten gated area. Students wearing safety vests will walk your children to their classes.

3) Parents, please remain in your cars. Students should exit from the passenger side of the vehicle.

4) After your children have exited the car, please leave promptly and safely. 5) Please be patient when the weather is challenging. Our children’s safety is worth the

few extra moments it may take.

Thank you to all students and families who are walking to and from school. This is a great way to stay fit and to keep our environment clean. To keep students and families safe, please follow the guidelines and expectations:

1) Please cross only at the light or the crosswalk 2) Use sidewalks and do not walk through the parking lot 3) Look both ways before crossing the road and follow the direction of the crossing guard

and teacher supervisor

The following protocol has been established to ensure that students connect with their families at the proper location and to promote an organized and safe dismissal for all students:

1) Grade 1 to 3 students will be dismissed through door 4 2) Grade 4 to 8 students will be dismissed through door 7 3) All bus students will dismiss through door 1 (main entrance) 4) All students in portables will dismiss from the portables 5) Supervisors will be outside from 3:35 to 3:50 – after this time, students will be brought

into the office to phone home 6) The Kiss and Ride area and our parking lot is closed in the afternoon during dismissal

time.

Have a ‘Plan B’ Please take a moment to create a ‘back up’ plan with your children. Be sure they know

what to do if the designated pick-up person is not present at dismissal.

Help keep everyone in our community safe.

Never make a U-turn or a 3- point turn in a school zone.

On April 9, 2019, as part of the board’s commitment to equity and inclusion, the Peel

board approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Islamic Heritage Month in

October. In addition to Islamic Heritage Month, the Peel board also approved motions

to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month and Hindu Heritage Month in

November, Sikh Heritage Month in April and Jewish Heritage Month in May. The board

will continue to recognize Black History Month in February, Asian Heritage Month in

May and Pride Month in June.

The Government of Canada first established October as Islamic History Month in 2007

while the Province of Ontario declared the month of October as Islamic Heritage

Month in 2016.

At Churchville, students are participating in a number of activities that recognize and

celebrate the rich heritage, history, culture and contributions of Muslim Canadians as

well as Muslim communities from around the world. Thank you to Mrs. Carriere who

has purchased and provided resources to support staff and students. Thank you also

to our group of moms who created a wonderful display in our foyer.

If your child will start grade 1 in September 2020, one of the important choices you will

make is whether you want to enroll your child in French Immersion (FI). The French

Immersion program runs here at Churchville. What is French Immersion? Is it right for

Our work has just begun. The Peel Learning Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to enable Peel District School Board students to achieve personal excellence by providing resources that help them overcome barriers. We officially launched in February 2019, and to date, the foundation has supported more than 200 students.

That’s more than 27,000 Peel board students. Through the Student Emergency Needs program and Student Backpack program, the support we provide can be as simple as providing funds for food or transportation, a winter coat, or a backpack filled with school supplies. This type of support can enrich a student's school experience and help them achieve success. Any teacher, staff or support person can speak confidentially to their school’s principal, vice-principal or supervisor when they encounter a student in need, who will then reach out to us to ask for help. FRENCH IMMERSION INFORMATION EVENING

October 23 is Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Our students will be thanking their drivers

Regional Learning Choices programs unlock passions Regional Learning Choices Programs offered by the Peel District School Board empower students by providing them with opportunities to develop and explore skills in a particular area of interest. Regional programs are open to all students who meet the criteria for acceptance. Students and their families are encouraged to attend the information night for the program of their choice to receive more information about the program and application details. Transportation is not provided for students in regional programs. If students have been accepted into a regional program and they live within the school boundary, they are eligible for busing only if they meet the distance criteria outlined in the board’s Transportation Policy #39. All regional programs include annual fees, including a non-refundable $40 application fee, except the Regional Skilled Trades and Transportation Engineering and Technology programs, which are offered at no cost.

Engage. Educate. Empower. Speakers Series. After 18 years, the Peel District School Board is revamping its annual parent conference. After hearing from participants, we are changing the traditional full-day workshop model to a multi-evening speaker series focused on a specific subject, where parents and caregivers will hear from a keynote speaker followed by a panel who will take audience questions. We will also invite Peel board departments, groups and community partners to share their information in an exhibitor area. The Engage. Educate. Empower. Jump start your future with Explore High Skills

Explore High Skills is a Peel District School Board pathway program that allows secondary schools with Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs to offer a unique specialized program choice for grade 9 and 10 students. These sector-related programs are available to students in all skill levels and in all pathways. Specialized programs in grade 9, like Explore High Skills, provide unique learning experiences to engage students as they transition to high school. Students can focus their learning on an area of interest as they build self-confidence, learn essential skills, and develop a sense of belonging in school and in the community. To enroll in the Explore High Skills program, students will indicate their interest when selecting high school courses in the fall. The opportunity to study a language in addition to English and French can benefit all students,

society in general and an increasingly independent world, including:

students with no prior knowledge of a particular language

students whose first language is English or French and who wish to study their home languages as

a second or third language

students whose first language is their home language

The International Languages program is based on oral communications, reading and writing in

languages other than English or French. Grammar and language knowledge are incorporated into

each of the three skill areas.

Any student who is currently enrolled in a Peel District School Board elementary or secondary school is

eligible to attend. Classes operate each Saturday from mid-September to mid-June, except for

holiday weekends and school vacations. Credit classes are 3.5 hours per day and run from 9 a.m. to

12:30 p.m. Elementary classes are 2.5 hours per day and run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration

is currently open. In partnership with School-day, Continuing Education offers an online, cashless
