The easy style that Cheryl Johnson has about her belies how many projects she’s almost always juggling. She greets most everyone with a smile; she saunters rather than rushes about. Her personality is easy, not frenetic. Although she is a full-time employee of Alabama

A & M University and a busy member in the Rho Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, nevertheless, Cheryl carves time out of a busy schedule to serve Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC USA). Having grown up in FPC as well as in a family where service is sovereign may help explain Cheryl’s generosity. Her mother, Dorothy Johnson, has been celebrated by numerous organizations and by FPC for her incalculable service. Cheryl’s sister Jerita is also a devoted volunteer; an inactive elder, Jerita currently works with the youth, serves on the Stewardship and Finance Ministry Team, and sings with the Praise Team. The other sister, Cerisa Rice, volunteers in the FPC food ministry when her schedule permits and serves on the Bob Jones Booster Club. The Johnsons are a service family. Thus, the evidence suggests that Cheryl has inherited the desire to serve and to do any task she accepts extremely well. She has her hand in various levels of communication at FPC. For the last few years, as the church clerk, she has recorded the work of session and reported its decisions and topics to the congregation via the newsletter HAND. She is indispensable to the production of the church newsletter, in fact, designing its pages. When readers say the newsletter is pretty, they are admiring the layout that Cheryl has created. Moreover, she has taken on the designing of FPC’s bulletin boards, except for the youth-focused one. The boards are creative and fulfill their function of informing the congregation. Another arena involves visual communications. Cheryl (along with Brenda Bunley and Eternity Grays) has been trained on how to create presentations using Easy Worship 7. This venture entails gathering content such as images, sound and video pertaining to the worhip service. Cheryl (and cohorts above) has also been trained on how to operate the program so that it appears

on the screens. Cheryl is one of the two people to date to substitute for Kyle Fallin for a complete service. An additional type of communication for Cheryl involves designing, layout, and printing special-program bulletins and program booklets such as the Honor’s Banquet booklet prepared for the youth ministry or the church bulletin prepared for Women’s Day. Cheryl’s special touch in creating appropriate, lovely covers and placing appealing content makes her the go-to church member for these kinds of projects. Cheryl decorates the fellowship hall tables for lunches on the third and fifth Sundays. She is visible in many other tasks such as handing out programs at the Black History Program on February 16; serving food at varied dining events in the fellowship hall; changing the information sign content on the church lawn; or working the registration table at Vacation Bible School. Recently, she has agreed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Vine ministry. Supporting churches of the Vine are represented on the board. Mary Mitchell previously held the position. Where a helping hand is needed, one is likely to see Cheryl’s hands serving, folding, typing, tacking, or positioning items. She is a woman blessed with numerous talents, and she freely and graciously shares them with her church. The staff of HAND extends appreciation to Cheryl Johnson for years of splendid work on HAND and in the organizations of FPC. She is most certainly a woman to be acknowledged and celebrated on Women’s Day when we “Celebrate the Gifts of Women.” Thank you, Cheryl! The staff of HAND could not operate without your creativity, vision, and work ethic! We love you.

The staff of HAND chooses a church member to honor for their invaluable service to the church family and to the programs FPC. Congratulations to Cheryl Johnson. The staff of HAND acknowledges, applauds, and thanks Cheryl Johnson for years of thoughtful service and leadership with love. She labors to make Fellowship Presbyterian Church the place that is ‘making disciples by reaching, growing, and sending people with Christ to do justice, to live mercy, and to walk humbly with God.” We invite the FPC congregation to join us in this spirit of recognition and gratefulness. Indeed, the grace of God knows no boundaries.

Fellowship Celebrates Black History Month with Activities and Recognitions

February is the shortest month in the year but at Fellowship, it’s one of the busiest. To spread positive knowledge about and to embrace African American history, ministry teams planned programs and events for every weekend in the month. Each Friday night, a culturally sensitive movie was shown at church and dinner or refreshments were served. Attendees enjoyed Black Panther, The Wiz, Selma, and The Long Walk Home. Each Sunday morning, one of the youth presented a “Black History Moment,” educating and reminding the congregation of brave, inventive, and intellectual Black men and women throughout American history. Each Sunday was also a special dress day to acknowledge Black History Month. February 3 was heart health awareness day or Go Red Sunday, and red was the color of the day. (See separate article and photos.) February 7 was red, black, gold, or green attire Sunday. On February 17, pride in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) was wildly evident throughout the congregation. For the Call to Worship a litany acknowledging the irrefutable value of these institutions was read and the congregation was invited to call out schools. Reverend Gregory Bentley’s sermon also acknowledged the value that black institutions have played in the life of African Americans and the country as well. The pictures below are testament to the joy of representing one’s undergraduate college or university and to the variety of institutions acknowledged.

On Saturday evening, February 16, a sizable crowd of both Fellowship members and visitors gathered in the sanctuary to enjoy “Listening to Voices from the Past,” a history program directed by Lamar Braxton under the auspices of the Christian Education Ministry Team. Numerous Fellowship members and guests gave voice to historic and culture altering visionaries, including Harriet Tubman, Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Mary McLeod Bethune, DiniZulu, Gil Scott Heron, and Nikki Giovanni, to give a small example of the program’s expanse. Thomas Ross portrayed DiniZulu, the African father of scouting, reciting DiniZulu’s exploits at length, without text. The art and evolution of cheers by ’cheerleaders,’ at sporting events also had a place on the program. The photographs below are a small illustration of the program’s variety.

Go Red Sunday

For several years, under the leadership of Frances Harris, Fellowship has been receptive to Go Red Sunday. This Delta Sigma Theta Sorority initiative encourages everyone to acknowledge the importance of a healthy heart. Educational materials are available in the narthex on a beautifully decorated table, and all are encouraged to practice heart-healthy eating habits and to exercise. Fellowship members looked striking in red outfits or red ties for the men. Lisa Likely and Constance Malone assisted in the set up and handing out of materials

Barbara Anthony Celebrates Milestone Birthday On a table in the back of the room sat an aqua and pink frosted cake and similarly frosted cupcakes. However, the most important table was up front where Barbara Anthony sat, looking celebratory and happy. Family and friends had made the upward trek to the Ledges Clubhouse to commemorate Barbara’s 80th year with her; one cousin had flown from California. It was a beautiful occasion marked by testimonials of love, friendship, remembrance, and gratefulness. Among the numerous memory-making events during the celebration were these: a serenade by the Alpha Ensemble; loving testimonials by two cousins who grew up with Barbara; Janine Anthony’s declarations about her mom and their family; two versions of “Happy Birthday” one sung by the Alpha Ensemble and another by AKA sisters; responses to the slide presentation that depicted Barbara’s life from about age three; and the obvious affection that all present had for the birthday woman. Since the event was professionally captured by local photographer Ritchie Carter, Barbara and her family will be able to relive that fine day many times in the coming years.

Several members of Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC-USA) and also singers in the Huntsville Spiritual Chorale participated in the Bobby Wiggins Spiritual Festival held at the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA on February 23, 2019. They were one of nine choirs in the festival and performed selections arranged by notable musicians such as Moses Hogan, William Dawson, John Work, and Roland Carter. The event was hosted by New Dimensions Choral Society, a community choir that promotes the Negro Spiritual as the Huntsville Spiritual Chorale does. FPC members who attended were Linda Burruss, Demetrius (DJ) Davis, Stefanie Davis, Bettye Dixie, Ted Dixie, Jr., Lucille Grayson, George Grayson (Chorale cheerleader), Henry Muse, and Joyce Pettis Temple. The Chorale was founded and is directed by Brenda and William Davis, Thirty-five participants, including ten members of the Alabama A & M University Choir, made the trip. Area churches with members in attendance were Phillips CME Church, Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church, The Rock, Lakeside United Methodist Church, Union Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, and First Baptist Church on Governors Drive. The Chorale received a standing ovation at the end of their four spirituals. This ambitious travel was supported in part by the Rosetta James Foundation and the office of Representative Anthony Daniels.

North Alabama Presbytery sponsored Elder Training

By request, the North Alabama Presbytery offered elder training in January and February. The training was highly encouraged for new elders and was a good refresher/reminder for returning elders or those who have not served recently. Training covered the theology of the Presbyterian system of governance (why we do what we do) and the basic responsibilities of the Session (what we do), providing a good common foundation for individual Sessions to ground their own specific procedures. Reverend Tom Lovell, pastor at Faith Presbyterian, and Reverend Christie Ashton facilitated the training. Highlights from the training: • Four sections of Book of Order F - Foundation—why we do what we do G - How we are organized W - Directory of worship. How we worship D - Rules of discipline • Four councils of church 1. Session of local congregation 2. Presbytery—North Alabama (28 churches with

about 3500 people . . .) 3. Synod of Living Waters (12 presbyteries) 4. General Assembly (approximately 171

presbyteries) • Committees make recommendations to Session. • A commissioner is elected to do a task and

empowered to make decisions. • Ministers are members of the presbytery not the

church. • Session is not the “boss” of the minister. • The church must have a treasurer. • Financial participation only does not equal active

membership. • Offering must be counted by two people. • The Clerk of Session does not have to be a member

of the Session. • Moderator is a member of Session and has a voice

and a vote. • Pastors cannot vote at congregational meetings. • The moderator is the pastor. Session cannot meet

without a moderator. • The pastor can appoint another minister to be

moderator of if pastor cannot appoint, then the Committee on Ministry will appoint a moderator.

• Congregational Meeting: Pastors have to be present for a vote. Pastor can step out for discussion.

Five (5) things pastor can do (W-2.0304): 1. Order of worship 2. Scripture 3. Sermon 4. Music 5. Prayers Five (5) things Session** can do (W-2.0303): 1. Worship times 2. Worship space 3. Special appointments (flowers, etc.) 4. Ministries of arts 5. Sacraments (time, regular observance) **Remember the pastor is a member of the Session Five (5) (6) things congregation can do (G-1.0503): 1. Elect officers 2. Call a minister* 3. Change existing pastoral relationships (terms of call,

requesting/consenting to/declining dissolution)* 4. Sell/purchase/encumber property* 5. Request exemption to terms of service* 6. (Joint congregational witness – this is rare)* *Also requires presbytery approval, but cannot happen without congregational approval. Fellowship attendees were Reverend Gregory Bentley, Cheryl K. Johnson, elders Jacquelyne Bennett, Pauline Bodiford, Eddgra Fallin, Robert Peagler, Thomas Ross, Anthony Thompson; and deacons Diann Bentley, Brenda Bunley, Lamar Braxton, Jannie Jones, and Mary Peagler.

“ 13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray

over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.
