We pray that viewing the service online will feed your soul with the life-giving gospel.

The seven candles on the altar recall the seven times our Savior spoke while on the cross. The extinguishing of the candles recalls the ebbing of his life and the darkness that came over the land on that first Good Friday.

OPENING HYMN (125:1,3,4) “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross”

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died,

My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a tribute far too small; Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Let us confess our sins to God our Father, and plead for his forgiveness. C: Almighty God, we come together to stand in your presence and to remember the precious sacrifice of your beloved Son.

M: But who may appear in your presence, Heavenly Father, and who may call on you for help? C: He who has clean hands and a pure heart; he will receive blessings from the Lord.

M: O holy and righteous God, you alone can make us clean. We have rebelled against you and have become ruined by sin. But your mercies never end; they are new every morning. At your command and promise, therefore, we come to you and confess our sins.

C: O holy and merciful Father, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you, and do not deserve to be called your child. But for the sake of the bitter sufferings and death of your beloved Son, I plead: Have mercy on me, O God, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. First candle is extinguished PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Heavenly Father, when your Son hung on the cross, he cried out to you in agony and grief. You gave him the strength to endure so that death might be destroyed and life restored. Have mercy on us all our days and preserve us in the true faith unto life everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Second candle is extinguished OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ......................................................................................... Isaiah 53:1-12 1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He

grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty

or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He

was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one

from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken

by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was

crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his

wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his

own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to

the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants?

For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was

stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though

he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes

his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord

will prosper in his hand. 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be

satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their

iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the

spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with

the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Third candle is extinguished EPISTLE LESSON .................................................................................................... Galatians 3:10-13 10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone

who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one is

justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not

based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ

redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed

is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

Fourth candle is extinguished HYMN (127) “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted”

Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See him dying on the tree!

’Tis the Christ, by man rejected; Yes, my soul, ’tis he, ’tis he.

’Tis the long-expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;

Proofs I see sufficient of it: ’Tis the true and faithful Word.

Tell me, as you hear him groaning,

Was there ever grief like his? Friends through fear his cause disowning,

Foes insulting his distress, Many hands were raised to wound him,

None would intervene to save, But the deepest stroke that pierced him

Was the stroke that Justice gave.

If you think of sin but lightly Nor suppose the evil great,

Here you see its nature rightly, Here its guilt may estimate.

Mark the sacrifice appointed; See who bears the awful load-

’Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed, Son of Man and Son of God.

Here we have a firm foundation,

Here the refuge of the lost; Christ’s the rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast.

Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, Sacrifice to cancel guilt-

None shall ever be confounded Who on him their hope have built.

Fifth candle is extinguished SERMON .................................................................................................................. Matthew 27:45-50

45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46 About

the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which

means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 When some of those

standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them

ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to

Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save

him.” 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

The Greatest Battle Ever Fought PRAYER LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Sixth candle is extinguished THE DEATH & BURIAL OF OUR SAVIOR ............................................................... John 19:17-42 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called

Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus

in the middle. 19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the

King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified

was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests

of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man

claimed to be king of the Jews.” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares,

one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven

in one piece from top to bottom. 24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide

by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They

divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” So this is what the soldiers

did. 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,

and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved

standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the

disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. 28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled,

Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it,

put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had

received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his

spirit. 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath.

Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked

Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came

and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the

other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not

break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a

sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his

testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may

believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his

bones will be broken,” 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have

pierced.”

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple

of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took

the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus

at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. 40

Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was

in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there

was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because

it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Seventh candle is extinguished CALLED WORKER QUARTET – “A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth”
