PASTORAL POST Returning to the Sacraments, by Fr. Tony Davis

Welcome back to St. Matthias and our normally published bulletin! We

are happy to reopen our Church building and resume public worship.

While we need to do our part to stay safe and not contribute to a sec-

ond wave of covid-19 cases, I think we all are realizing the mental health

benefits of being out and about. Prior to this experience, I have always

been hesitant about recruiting people to become more involved in our

church. I know many of you have busy lives and cannot afford to put

more on your plate. But after this experience, I am not as hesitant to ask

you to actively help build community. Community involvement is valuable

to our well-being.

As mentioned in the St. Matthias Feast Day letter, our reopening process

with start with the spiritual aspects of our Church, namely the sacra-

ments. Overtime, we will be reintroducing events that had to be can-

celled or postponed. I ask for your patience as we review our calendar

and come up with a plan, all the while knowing that everything is still

subject to change.

For now, there is an essential sacrament that I do want to offer: the sac-

rament of reconciliation. The liturgical season of Lent is great time to

examine of lives and make a confession. This past March, I had scheduled

about 6 or 7 priests to be here to help with our Lenten Penance Service.

Since cancelling that service, I have been bothered by not sufficiently of-

fering the sacrament of mercy to all of us during Lent 2020.

As a result, even though Lent and Easter are over, I invite you to consid-

er receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation in the month of June. Per-

haps the ‘stay at home’ order has allowed you to reflect more deeply

upon your life or has led to the creation of new sinful habits. I think all of

us have had some bad days over the past few months and maybe even

some regrets. Getting this out in the open in a confidential setting may

help.

Each Sunday afternoon in June (7, 14, 21, 28), from 1:30 – 3 pm, multiple

priests will be available to talk in the sacrament of reconciliation. Confes-

sional stations will be set up in the lower wing classrooms, as the Church

will be open as well for Eucharistic Adoration from noon – 3 pm. Please

consider coming and use the carport door entrance.

PRAY FOR FINANCE COUNCIL

Please pray for the members of our Finance Council as they prepare for their June 4th workshop and formulate a plan

moving forward.

PALMS FOR 2020

Palms were blessed on Palm Sunday, April

05. They are available in the vestibule. Please take one as you leave church. They will be available for several weeks.

UPDATING PARISH RECORDS

We have begun to cleanup and correct our

parish records, especially our list of active, registered parishioners. This is the official list that the diocese uses to evaluate the

size of parishes, and set financial goals for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. In the coming weeks, you may receive a request to

update your contact information, and/or verify that you wish to remain an active, registered parishioner at St. Matthias.

PHONE SYSTEM

We have been working on a contract for a

new phone system for several months. Unfortunately, updating the phone system required a lot of maintenance and review

of our infrastructure, which was not in great shape. The entire parish office phone system (incoming calls, outgoing calls, and

voicemail) failed completely at the end of April. Please contact us via email ([email protected]).

RESCHEDULING EVENTS

We are in the beginning stages of reviewing our calendar and rescheduling sacraments,

events, and other community functions that were postponed due to the pandemic. We appreciate your patience.

GREETERS

Greeters are temporarily on hold while we

navigate our new mass procedures. We look forward to welcoming new and returning greeters in the future.

REOPENING INFORMATION

The Ohio Bishops have granted churches permission to open for public masses starting

Pentecost weekend, May 30-31. However, the dispensation from Sunday obligations

continues through September 13, 2020. If you have any hesitancy, please consider stay-

ing home. We are not equipped for large crowds.

The Church will open 30 minutes before mass begins. Please use carport or

welcome table entrances only.

Please wear your masks. Some will be available here for those who do not have

them. Hand sanitizer will also be available.

Music will be offered by the cantor and accompanist. You may sing along softly if

you know the words, but hymnals have been removed.

There will be no sign of peace or communion cups during mass.

Communion will be distributed at the end of mass as we leave the church.

Baskets for the offertory collection will be in vestibule after mass. You may contin-

ue to mail in your offertory if you prefer.

Adoration is available after the 11am Sunday mass until 3pm for those who prefer

to pray and worship on their own. Please use the carport entrance only.

Homilies can be found on our website: stmatthiascolumbus.com/homilies;

Bulletins are available on our website, or for pickup at the carport entrance.

If you are unable to worship with us in person, please continue to make time to wor-

ship at home, and connect with St. Matthias on Facebook.

ROOF UPDATE

We are pleased to announce that the long-awaited replacement of our church roof has

begun! The work began in May, and is scheduled to finish by June 01 (though the week

of rain may have changed our deadline slightly). May our efforts to keep our buildings

updated benefit our parishioners today and in the years to come!

WEEKLY COLLECTION

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support our parish during this time of

no public mass. We have been collecting about half of our budgeted offertory amount,

which is good given the circumstances! Please bring your offerings to mass, or continue

to mail your offering to St. Matthias.

Our regular weekly financial update will return in next week’s bulletin.
