AND MOST FRIDAY MORNINGS

Practicing Faith The following is a reprint of a devotional from The Seedbed Daily Text with Omar Rikabi

The Formula

Jude 25b Amen.

“Amen” is the signal that we’re done. The most common modern definition is “so be it.” “Amen” usually serves as the

prayer version of “The End.”

Jude ends his letter with “Amen” and we move on. But what if that’s not really the end?

The word amen originates in the Old Testament Hebrew meaning “truth.” To put it in more practical terms, to say “amen”

at the end of a prayer or a sermon means something like, “What you’ve said is the truth.”

1 Corinthians 1:20 says, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him

the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

In other words, through Jesus the truth is spoken by you and me.

With that in mind, consider the pattern these last three days on how to defend the faith against false teaching. Jude be-

gins with you and me individually:

But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love (v.

20-21).

Then he moves to how we deal with others:

And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judg-

ment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives (v.22-23).

Then he concludes with God’s actions and nature:

Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, pow-

er, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.(v. 24-25)

Distill it down to it’s most basic and we get you for others because of God.

This is the amen, the truth we speak with our lives. It’s an amen defended by loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind and loving our neighbor as ourselves… which is the pattern if you reverse the order of Jude’s ending. See what he

did there?

And so Jude ends his letter on defending against what is false with an amen that is not a “the end” but a “to be contin-

ued” until Jesus returns.

Can I get an amen?

THE PRAYER Jesus, give me more and more mercy, peace, and love. Amen and amen.

MISSIONS UPDATE

While our ONE THING project is on hiatus for

the summer, please share your ideas for

recipients for future months with the Missions

committee. They would appreciate your input

and prayers as they select mission projects for

the remainder of this year.

FUMC Finance Report Operating Fund through June 23, 2019

Income $8,374 (Devil’s Run Proceeds to date $6,895.72)

*Amount needed per month to meet our 2019 budget is $10,446.92

Remember to send in your offering when you’re not in church. Consider the option of automatic withdrawals from your

bank. Thank you for your giving!

The Finance Committee would like to remind everyone that the option of giv-ing your Church offering through elec-tronic deduction from your checking or saving account is available. The neces-sary form is available at the usher’s station at the southwest corner of the sanctuary. If you would like the form mailed to you, please contact the church office at 662-2873, or Gwen Hodgins at 662-5963. Anyone who wishes to take advantage of this meth-od of giving should complete the form and return to the church office or to Gwen Hodgins, finance secretary. Our bank, Western State Bank, will then set up the electronic deduction. This is an easy and convenient option of giving. If you have questions concerning the form, please feel free to contact Gwen.

SUMMER BIBLE STUDY

The Monday afternoon Bible study of the book of Mark has had two enjoyable meetings, and after a short break, we will resume on Monday, July 8 at 1:00 pm in the large classroom near the west entrance of the church. No preparation necessary, just come and find out what the shortest gospel has for you.

FUMC Administrative Council Meeting Minutes June 19, 2019

Members present: Chuck and Jonielle Soderstrom, Pastor Lori Broschat, Arlene Kirk, Bev Oehlke, Ray Russell, Joyce Carter, Perry Lundon, Gwen Hodgins, Fran Dockter, Rodney Brown, Leo Sayler, and Marcia Ulrich. Call to Order: Chairperson Chuck Soderstrom called the meeting to order. Pastor Lori shared a devotion and prayer. Approval of Minutes: Chuck called for approval of the May 2019 minutes; motion was made by Ray, seconded by Rodney, motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Perry reported a deficit general fund balance of $12,503.44. We are squared away with insurance company and our payment is taken out automatically. Our income/expense status is minus $1,438.06. There is an esti-mate of $4500 from Devils Run with one more deposit to be made. Therefore, a final report is pending. Perry made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report as presented, seconded by Leo, motion carried. Finance Committee Report: The committee has not met this month, but similar to report from May, it continues to focus on key areas: electronic giving, the offering difference between 4

th Sunday and 5

th Sunday months. There is a new struc-

ture in bulletin to reflect this. The Steps of Giving chart has been in newsletter, and will appear frequently to keep it in front of people. A talk from pulpit about our finances might be worthwhile again. Joyce suggested that Leo give more specific details to the congregation about monthly expenditures, as most people are unaware of this. The endowment committee did make the Hope Center payment. Leo is concerned with whether the endowment committee will expect us to conduct a fundraising campaign in the event on another large project. Also, will that impact the regular giving? Board of Trustees Report: Ray reported on a recent meeting to walk around the church. There is work to be done within the church; the signup sheet has worked. The sign in front needs to be replaced, and he suggests that the Admin-istrative Council make that decision. The parsonage needs grass pulled from rocks and some tree trimming, and the big thing is the front and back decks which need cleaning and repainting. This equates to a good deal of physical labor. Vance can use his pressure washer, but an outside painter will cost money. Certain names of painters were mentioned, so should we ask for bids? We actually need carpenter as well as a painter. Ray offered to do the tree trimming if some-one would be there to supervise. Ray will meet with inspector from insurance company on June 25

th at the church.

Staff Parish Relations Report: No report given, committee has not met but plans to do so this quarter. Nothing perti-nent has been presented. Missions Report: Marcia reported that the One Thing project is on hiatus for the summer. There will be a Missions brunch on June 30

th with the offering going to SAAF.

UMW Report: Joyce reported the group met in June and will not meet until September. Education Committee Report: Jonielle reported the committee is on hiatus until October 1

st. Vacation Bible School

was well-received by the kids. Youth Group Report: They are also on hiatus for the summer. Worship Committee Report: Pastor Lori would like to do another joint service with Spirit Lake; the best Sunday for them is one that she had also chosen for a Breakthrough Prayer training (August 25

th). So we will hold the service here

with a shared lunch meal to follow. We would like more special music through the summer months. We can consider asking the Presbyterians to help with music if they are willing. Pastor’s Report: Pastor Lori advised of Breakthrough prayer training on August 25

th. She begins the non-profit leader-

ship course in July, starting with a 2 day meeting at the school in Mitchell, SD, so will be away July 15-17. Annual confer-ence was interesting, and Joyce enjoyed the experience as our delegate. Apportionments will stay at the 16% level and may be increased in increments in the future. The AA group needs their own liability insurance. They have asked to continue to meet here in July while this is being researched. Lori told about a lady named Jody, who is a friend of Daryl Strong’s daughter Chryl, who requested a transfer of membership from Vincent UMC in Minot to our church for personal reasons. Though she does not reside in DL, she will support our church with her offering. Tana’s walking group on Mondays is going well. Lori feels that Tana has become an advocate for new approaches within the church and we should encourage her to keep her vision going. Old Business: Apparently Grace will have an 80

th birthday celebration with a “This is your Life” theme during fellowship

on Sunday, August 4th with sandwiches, chips and cake. Open to public so could be many people. Gwen will contact

Grace’s daughter for more details to ensure we have people to help.

2019 37 60 41 67 51

2018 34 40 35 50 40

By your regular attendance and invitation to bring a friend to worship, your church is blessed and nurtured.

New Business: It was clarified that food money from funerals goes to the UMW. Marcia asked if the members of the ad council would like to have meeting minutes emailed to them. We can try this, although we all read them in the news-letters and we would presumably like a copy to look at during the meetings anyway. Meeting was adjourned. Pastor Lori dismissed us with a prayer. The next meeting is Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at 7:00 pm—please note this is the 4th Wednesday of the month

Respectively submitted:

Marcia Ulrich, Ad Council Secretary

When You or Someone You Love Visits the Hospital From: Altru Pastoral Services

Mark Ellingson, Chaplain Manager

[email protected] 701-780-5300

None of us look forward to time spent in a hospital bed. Altru Health system seeks to both help with what is wrong physically, and also to support patients in other ways. That includes spiritual support.

Some of you may remember the days when the local hos-pital would call churches to inform pastors when a parish-ioner had become a patient. That went away years ago. These days, patient privacy is protected carefully.

So, if you become a patient at Altru, your information will be kept private. You will have full control of who comes to see you, including your pastor. There are two ways to arrange a visit. One way is for you to tell your pastor, or to have your family contact the church. Your pastor wants to know.

The second way is to ask an Altru Chaplain to contact your pastor. Altru’s Chaplains want to help, and believe in the ministry and support your pastor can provide. If you ask, and only if you ask, a chaplain will make that contact.

The chaplains at the hospital want to serve you and to serve the church. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Pastoral Services.
