NEW YEAR’S FAMILY FAITH
RESOLUTIONS This New Year 2020 offers us a new beginning with opportunities to change and grow when we make and keep resolutions. A good way to teach children the importance of New Year’s resolutions is to turn setting them into a family activity. Try these ideas for faith-based New Year’s resolutions: 1. Make it a family activity. Take turns telling what you each like about your relationship with God and what you would like to change. It may help if parents demonstrate. Then, using their comments, write down a brief list of goals for every person. 2. Age appropriate resolutions get kept.
What each child needs to resolve depends on the child. Gently steer youngsters toward age appropriate prayer times, works of charity (chores, contributions
to the poor box or parish collection), or Scripture reading (perhaps reading from a children’s Bible). Limit the number of resolutions so they are doable throughout the year. Post each person’s resolutions in a prominent place in the home. 3. Be a role model. Children of any age will understand the value of working to grow in faith if parents lead. As a family, periodically review resolution progress but make it a time of encouragement, not punishment. Praise effort. The best part is you are working together to grow in faith and lover of God. That has its own reward.
THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH
December 29, 2019
“Because we are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness and patience. Bear with
one another: forgive whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Over all these virtues put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect.” As we conclude the calendar, praying for our family, we look to the family of Nazareth as a model. Surely they were tried by travel, poverty, oppressive government edicts, forced to take part in a census, flee a treacherous dictator, but united in the presence of the Christ. Paul’s teaching allows us to take stock of our own home and family life. Each virtue he names is like a different room in our home, or steps we ascend daily. If one is missing we can look for it as we begin a new year. May we ‘dedicate ourselves to thankfulness’; for all the blessings given our family this year and seek His blessings as we turn the page to 2020.
