Dear Friends,

As you know, throughout the course of the year, and especially toward the end of the academic year, I thank as many parishioners

as I can (and if I forget someone, please let me know). Although we do not always need thanks for the good things we do, God knows what we do, sometimes it is nice to be acknowledged. So, that being said, this week I thank Joanne and Joe McCartan. Joanne custom made the green drapes in the sanctuary doorways, near the altar. She also made the purple drapes we use during Advent and Lent. She did this two years ago, and I never mentioned it. She doesn’t want her name mentioned but I think its deserving. Her husband Joe, cleaned, sanded, and re-stained the door leading to the main office. He was never asked, nor did he get paid, he just wanted to do it. This is typical of the type of people we have in this parish. And, its the only way a parish can survive and thrive. Thank you Joanne and Joe!

We also thank the men and women who worked security for the festival. They did a great job! When I receive their names I will let you know.

Vacation Time

If you are taking a vacation this summer, have a wonderful time! Everyone deserves some time off and I hope everyone gets at least a little. If you do go away, please bring us a bulletin from the Church you visit. Stay safe! Enjoy! Be assured of my prayers!

Like teachers, the priests take some time off during the summer months. Although we are entitled to a full month, I usually take one full week and try to catch a few days here and there. Because of this, I may not write a bulletin column every week. In fact, we may keep the bulletin somewhat simpler until mid-August. However, if your ministry needs something in the bulletin, send it to Anna Rose Regan. You can find her email address in today’s bulletin.

Thanks for all you do for our parish! Everything is appreciated!

Fr. Grieco

Last week I visited Lourdes with my wife Dolores. I have visited France many times but had never managed to get to Lourdes. We were blessed with beautiful weather during our visit. Wherever you happen to be……the sun always enhances the visit……particularly….as at Lourdes, when so much of the experience is open to the elements.

We were probably fortunate that the ‘peak season’ at Lourdes is during July and August. It was certainly busy in late June, but not so busy that the town felt overcrowded. Speaking of the town….and I know many of you have visited Lourdes……. it can be very commercial. I suppose like everything else it’s a supply and demand situation, so I shouldn’t be too critical of the merchants in town. The sanctuary itself, however, is a haven of tranquility, even though there are so many visitors. The sanctuary is the area which includes the grotto and the basilica and the baths, and once inside the sanctuary, it does indeed become a sanctuary from the forces of the outside world.

For many people the highlight of a visit to Lourdes is the candlelight procession. It is certainly a very powerful experience. Both nights when we joined the procession there was a beautiful cool breeze coming off the river which runs through the Sanctuary. While this brought some nice cool air…… it also blew out many of the candles in the procession, but this did nothing to lessen the experience.

Probably the most moving part of the evening is to witness the faith and the hope of the ‘malades’….the many sick people who had travelled from all over the world in hope of finding some healing. The candlelight procession is led by the sick and their medical and spiritual companions who push them in wheelchairs. While those with chronic illness lead the procession, those of us who are in need of spiritual healing follow behind reciting the rosary. Altogether, a very humbling experience.

While it is a great privilege to visit Lourdes and the grotto where Our Lady appeared, not everyone, of course, has the opportunity to do so. The Blessed Mother appeared to Bernadette and asked her to remind us to follow her Son’s Gospel message of prayer and repentance and good works…..a message at that time….as it is today…..that is largely ignored. That so many people heeded Bernadette back then….and even to this day…is indeed a miracle. However for those among us who may not have the opportunity to visit Lourdes….we are blessed with the greatest miracle of all….available to us each and every day….and literally on our doorstep.

The greatest miracle of all…is of course….the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. So while from time to time God does send us a message through the Blessed Virgin Mary, He makes Himself available to each of us every day of our life. Pilgrimages to Marian Shrines are a wonderful way to reaffirm our faith. However our Blessed Mother knows, and it is her wish for us……that regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament and frequent worthy reception of the Eucharist…..where we become one with her Son….is where we will find the love and the comfort that we, each of us, so earnestly desire.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen!

DEACON LACHLAN

We know many people are away over the summer and can’t attend Mass at Holy Spirit. In the spirit of keeping our spiritual lives alive and well throughout the summer months and continuing to encourage our children’s participation in particular, we are inviting all the children to pick up a Mass bulletin from any other parishes wherever they attend church - across the country and even across the world - and leave them at the office. Sally Zehnter will be collecting them

throughout the summer and putting together a display of our children’s participation in Mass Across The Country and Mass Across the World. Contact her at [email protected].

Please leave any Mass bulletins at the office for the attention of Sally Zehnter. Happy Trails!!
