Outdoor Stations of the Cross
“Please read because I need a response”
On Friday night, April 7th, it is my hope to have an outdoor Stations of the Cross, with the teenagers of the parish doing the readings. We will have flashlights and a huge BONFIRE, supervised by the New Hyde Park Fire Department. And, although every parishioner is welcome and encouraged to attend, the teenagers will be leading the way. This will be a perfect combination of offering our Friday night to God and also having a lot of fun!
However, since there will be a lot of work involved, I need to know how many teenagers are interested. Again, everyone is welcome, but it will be a youth event.
Please respond to this today or ASAP. I will make my final decisions once I know how many parishioners are interested. My email is: [email protected].
Please respond now! Thank you!

Over the last 40 or so years we have grown accustomed to seeing the Holy Father riding in what has become known as the ‘Popemobile’……..a word which has now entered into common usage……. even in countries where English is not the first language. While we tend to associate the Popemobile with St. John Paul, over the years there have been a number of different vehicles used to transport our popes. Of course at one time the Popes rarely left the Vatican, and when they did it was usually only for short trips. In fact from 1870 when the Papal States were incorporated into a unified Italy, until 1929 when the Vatican State was formalized in the Lateran Treaty, the Popes did not leave the Vatican at all. The pope in 1870 when the Papal States were lost…… Pius IX ……referred to himself as the ‘Prisoner of the Vatican.’
In 1909 Pope Pius X was presented with the gift of an automobile, but it was never used. (He was still a horse and carriage guy!) The entry of the first automobile into the Vatican occurred at the beginning of the pontificate of Pius XI in 1922. (Pius XI was fascinated by anything mechanical). It was a gift from the Association of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Milan. Although Pius did use the car, the world would have to wait for the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929 before the Roman pontiff would travel by car outside the Vatican. (One day I may do a story on the Papal States and the Lateran Treaty……although it would need volumes and volumes to do it justice.)
Pictured here is the car used by Pius XI when he became the first Pope to travel by automobile, and the first Pope to leave the Vatican since 1870. The car is a Graham Paige 837 (American made) and was used by Pius throughout the early 30’s. As it happened Pius really enjoyed riding in cars, because by the mid to late thirties he had been gifted a Citroen and also a Mercedes. These cars became the mainstays of the Vatican fleet although they were never used very much.
Then in 1966 came the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL limousine. Although it was rarely used by Pope Paul VI, John Paul
II chose it from the start as his main car...despite the fact that it had no air conditioning…and he always enjoyed riding in it. In 1976 along came the first real “Popemobile,” the white off-road vehicle used by the pope for brief journeys and which also gave the huge crowds an opportunity to see him better. The first “Popemobile” was a Toyota Land Cruiser, followed by a Fiat Campagnola, which was the one being used during the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981. Since then, the Popemobile (and all papal cars) are armored. The SCV plates (Vatican City State) are in red letters on a white background for cars used by the pope (numbers 1 to 7) and in black letters on a white background for all the others.
A little Papal trivia for you, and also some interesting facts for the car enthusiasts out there.
May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen!

All children ages 4 and up are invited to participate in the Little Passion this year.
The children of the parish reenact the events of the Passion; events that Jesus went through before he was crucified. It is important to remember that this is not a play, but rather a gift from the children of the Parish in which we are all reminded about the single greatest event that has ever, and will ever happen on the earth.
There will be a sign-up taking place on Sunday,March 26th after the 9:30 AM Mass in the back of the Church.
The Passion will take place on Sunday, April 2nd during the 9:30 AM Family Mass. There will be a practice on Saturday, April 1st in the Church at 11 AM. If you have any questions, you can email Fred Grimshaw at [email protected].

Ministry provided. Each month, we served an average of 75 children, 116 adults and 11 seniors. The largest service provided was food and basic needs (soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, etc.). Also, St. Vincent dePaul provided clothing, furniture, help with utilities and
rent, etc. for any of our neighbors. All of this was made possible through the generosity of YOU, our parishioners. So, thank you very much
