Today’s Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. Throughout these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the king-dom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the disciples. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus offers three more short parables.
The first two parables describe the great value of the king-dom of heaven. In the first parable, Jesus says that the king-dom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth pos-sessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell every-thing else to possess. These parables teach us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God.
The third parable that Jesus proposes in today’s Gospel is different from the first two, but it is reminiscent of the para-ble of the sower heard in last week’s Gospel. The kingdom of heaven is compared to fishing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated.
Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a house-hold who “brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that Jesus is here instructing the early Christian community on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jew-ish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’ teach-ing about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jew-ish tradition; it interprets it in a different light.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK . . .
Dear Parishioners:
It is with beyond pleasure that I am welcoming you all back home to your beautiful parish of
the Holy Innocents in the face of these unsettling times. Throughout the past six months, many of us
have been through a lot unforeseeable issues due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This pandemic has
completely changed the world, the way we live and worship. Many of you are still afraid to come out
due to safety concerns, we acknowledged your concerns and keep you in our daily prayers. Our com-
mitment to the safety of our parishioners and our staff has remained our main concern. Rest assured
that we are committed to make it our highest priority during the reopening of the Church and rectory
office.
You may have noticed various changes during your visits to the rectory and the Church. In
compliance with the law, our Church is following infection control recommendations of the Dioce-
san guidelines. As you can imagine, infection control has evolved into a “new normal.” We made
these changes and implemented enhanced infection control procedures for the safety of our parish-
ioners and our staff. For example:
Our Church is marked with blue tape on the floor, and seats are designated, the collection is
taken differently, communion is given on the palm of the hands to allow for social distancing from
other parishioners. Additionally, the lector uses a separate lectionary and lectern on the altar to allow
for social distancing from our priests and deacons.
Following New York State guidance, please wear a face mask covering and have one for your
child/children over the age of 2. We provide hand sanitizer at the entrance doors of the Church, in
front of the altar, and we kindly request that you use it before entering and leaving the Church. There
also will be hand sanitizer around the office and Plexiglass for safety measures as well when the of-
fice is fully opened to assist you.
We kindly ask that you don’t touch the statues, icons, shrines, and waterfont for the well-
being and safety of all. I am looking forward to seeing you all soon to pray for healing, courage, and
strength so that we may together put an end to this virus and return to our healthy way of living and
worshiping.
Please, also know that we are grateful for your loyalty, generosity, and your support of our
mission during these unprecedented times.
Yours in Christ,

Oratio Imperata – Prayer in Times of Calamities
Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to You in gratitude for the wonders of creation of which we are part, for Your providence that sustains us in our needs, and for your wisdom that guides the course of the universe.
We acknowledge our sins against You and the rest of creation. We have not been good stewards of nature. We have confused Your command to subdue the earth.
The environment is made to suffer our wrongdoings and now we reap the harvest of our abuse & indifference. Global warming is upon us. Typhoons, floods, volcanic eruption and other calamities occur in increasing number & intensity.
We turn to You our loving Father and beg forgiveness for our sins. We ask that we, our loved ones and our hard-earned possessions be spared from the threat of calamities, natural and man-made. We beseech You to inspire us all to grow into responsible stewards of Your creation and generous neighbors to those in need. Amen.
