OUR DESIRE FOR THE EUCHARIST

In 1955 Ray Kroc put his entire life's savings on the line to become the exclusive distributor of a five-spindled milkshake maker called the Multimixer. Ray heard about a hamburger stand in California that was using 8 of his mixers at one time. He went out there to take a look and was amazed at seeing so many customers being served at the same time. Ray convinced the owners of that hamburger stand to open several such restaurants, and in 1955 the first McDonald's hamburger franchise was opened in Des Planes, Illinois.

And since that first opening, McDonald's has become the world's largest and best known food service retailer with more than 35,000 restaurants in about 120 countries. McDonald's has sold billions of hamburgers.

Now, I don't know about you, but as my taste buds and digestive tract have matured, I seem to have outgrown my yearning for McDonald's fast food. I must admit that McDonald's is NOT my first choice (or second choice for that matter) of places to dine.

However, when I reflect on my relationship with McDonald's over the years, and how I drifted away from the golden arches, I think there is some analogy or parallel with the situation of Catholics and the feast we celebrate today—The Body and Blood of Christ.

One of the great delights I have every year is witnessing the preparation of children who are receiving their First Holy Communion. As the day draws near, the children get more and more excited. The children want to receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. And catechism teachers and parents go through a lot of preparation to make their children's First Communion a really memorable occasion.

I would dare say, for most of the children, they are more excited about their First Communion than going to McDonald's on their special day. But, it seems that with age their desire and excitement for receiving the Body of Christ fades. By the time of adulthood, many have lost all taste for the "bread of eternal life."

This is really a problem. Worse yet, many Catholics really think it’s optional to come to Mass every Sunday. They’re wrong. It’s a serious offense against God NOT to come every Sunday to the banquet He has prepared for us. Jesus Himself tells us: “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (Jn 6:53)

McDonald's has over 35,000 restaurants in about 120 countries around the world, and has served billions of people. But, let's remember, Jesus Christ has set HIS dining table in way more than 35,000 churches, and in EVERY corner of the world, and the Church has served many more billions of people than McDonald's in her 2,000 years of offering the Body and Blood of Christ.

And let’s remember that the best "value meal" offered on the planet is what Jesus offers us in Holy Communion.

Fr. Dave

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL:

HAVE YOU MADE YOUR PLEDGE YET?

Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners, we have made great strides toward our goal of $103,983 but we still have a way to go. Each gift is important to the mission of the diocese. If you have not yet made a gift or responded to the ADA, we invite you to do so today. There are pledge cards at the back of the church and in the Parish Office.

Every dollar raised to meet our goal supports important diocesan services. And every dollar raised above our goal will be returned to our parish to help with the many needs of our parish and school. But if we fail to meet our goal, our parish will have to pay the difference. To those who have contributed, we are most grateful. Thank you!

Our 2017 ADA Goal: $103,983

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul leads us to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tra-dition of its founder, Blessed Frederick Ozanam, and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

The Holy Cross/St. Matthew Conference is blest by your generosity in making this outreach possible. Your collective food and financial contributions enabled us to assist 216 adults and 278 children in Champaign during April & May.

Please continue your support and keep the members of St. Vincent de Paul Society and those they help in your prayers. Our donation poor box is in the vestibule of the Church. If you have special needs that the St. Vincent de Paul Socie-ty can assist you with, please contact the parish office.
