Reflections ~ Reflexiones

GGOOSSEEPPLL MMAATTTTHHEEWW:: 1177:: 11--99 In this reading, Jesus takes his apostles Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, he is transfigured before them. He shows them the glory that is his as the only-begotten Son of God. With Jesus are the Old Testament prophets, Moses and Elijah. Peter can hardly believe his eyes. He wants to do something to commemorate this wonderful event. He suggests that they build three tents there! He wanted to mark this spot as holy. Then, from heaven, the voice of the Father was heard: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, all was still. They looked up, and there was Jesus, alone with them. Then he prepared them for his death and resurrection. It is important to remember that this event happened just before the passion and death of Jesus. This was a special gift to the apostles, so that they would remember that Jesus, their teacher and friend, was also their Lord, their Savior, and the Son of God. Long after this event, Peter wrote about it in his first letter. How did he suggest we commemorate this event? Not by building tents on holy ground, but by paying attention to the message of Christ, by listening to the Son of God. 1.) Peter's impulse to mark this spot of encounter with Jesus was not wrong. It is a very human instinct. Our churches and shrines are "holy ground" for us. When we make a prayer corner at home or at school, we are setting aside "holy ground." Does this holy ground help you to be aware of God's presence? Does this holy ground help you to listen to Christ? How? Why didn't Jesus and the apostles stay on the mountain? Why did they come down? What do you think?

¿Te ayudan esos lugares a escuchar a Cristo?

TTrreeaassuurreess FFrroomm OOuurr TTrraaddiittiioonn:: As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome’s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city’s only glory. The Romans wanted “good order” not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. New Eucharistic Holy Hours WWhhaatt iiss EEuucchhaarriissttiicc AAddoorraattiioonn??

“Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ….

During Eucharistic Adoration, we "watch and wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist ... By worshiping the Eucharistic Jesus, we become what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, The Lord draws us to Himself and gently transforms us.

In its fullest essence ... Eucharistic Adoration is "God and Man reaching out for each other, at the same time!" (St. Ambrose Foundation).

NNeeww HHoollyy HHoouurrss aatt EEppiipphhaannyy In the gospels, Jesus tells his disciples: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest," and he also exclaims, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." In Christianity, Sunday is considered the Sabbath day, which means rest, and so it seems to be a fitting time for us to come and rest with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

"In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host.”- Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI "In this Sacrament of Love, Jesus Christ waits for us. Let us not fail to be generous in giving our time to Jesus in adoration.” – St. John Paul II "Know also that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual exercises of the day.” – St. Alphonsus Liguori
