Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to you. Allow Your hea-ling hand to heal them. Touch their soul with Your compassion for others. Gospel: Mark 10: 46-52 When someone calls attention to himself in a crowd, oth-ers sometimes say, "Stop making a spectacle of yourself!" In today's gospel story, it is the blind beggar Bartimaeus who is irritating the crowd. He is shouting so persistently to Jesus that the people are embarrassed by this public

display of neediness. They attempt to shush him. But Bartimaeus shouts, "Son of David, have pity on me!" Jesus hears the beggar's plea and restores his sight. He tells Bartimaeus that his own faith has healed him. We all suffer from blindness of one kind or another because we fail to see things as Jesus does. "I want to see" should be our daily prayer to him. 1.) Why do you think the crowd was so irritated by the blind beggar's behavior? 2.) What experiences do you have of people being embarrassed by those who are odd or different? 3.) How does Bartimaeus respond to the complaints of the crowd?

Administrator’s Corner October 28, 2012 = 30th Sunday of the Year – B

Is Halloween a pagan festival? Origins of the modern holiday can be traced to the pre-Christian celebrations, like the Celtic festival of ‘Lord of the Dead’ or ‘Samhain’ which was celebrated before the Celtic new year on Nov. 1. In 835 AD, Pope Gregory IV moved the commemoration of martyrs (later on All Saints Day) from May 13 to Nov. 1. The night before became known as All Hallows Eve (“holy evening”), and later Hallow-een. (Nov. 2 became All Souls Day.) Many modern Halloween traditions have ancient roots. Trick-or-treating began hundreds of years ago in Ireland when farmers went door-to-door collecting food and goods for an autumn village feast and bonfire. Contributors were promised prosperity; the others received threats of bad luck. Irish Catholic immigrants brought this with them. However, when combined with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, Halloween can be a good time to celebrate believers who have gone to Heaven before us and our hope of joining them. God bless you. Fr. ¿Es Halloween-El Día de las Brujas-una fiesta pagana? Los orígenes de esta moderna celebración se remontan a las fiestas como la del festival del ¨Señor de los Difuntos¨o “Samhain” que ocurría en la víspera del Año Nuevo Céltico en los tiempos antes de Cristo. En el año 835 el Papa Gregorio IV cambió la fecha de la celebración del Día de los Mártires (luego conocida como el Día de todos los Santos) del 13 de mayo al 1ro.de noviembre. La noche anterior a esta celebración se conocía como “Víspera del dia de los Santos” (All Hallows Eve) o Halloween en inglés. El 2 de noviembre se convirtió en la Fiesta de todos los difuntos. Muchas de las costumbres actuales del Día de las Bru-jas”(Halloween) también tienen raíces muy antiguas. La costumbre de pedir dulces (Trick-or-treat) por ejemplo, comenzó hace muchísimos años cuando los granjeros en Irlanda iban de puerta en puerta recolectando alimentos y provisio-nes para las celebraciones y fogatas que las aldeas tenían para festejar la venida del otoño. A los que contribuían se les prometía prosperidad (treat), mientras que a los que no lo hacían se les amenazaba con tener mala suerte (trick). Estas costumbres fueron traídas a América por los inmigrantes Católicos de Irlanda. A pesar de ello, podemos aprovechar las celebraciones del Día de los Santos y del Día de los difuntos con Halloween para celebrar a aquellos que ya están gozando de la vida eterna y tener la esperanza de poder reunirnos con ellos algún día. ¡Dios los bendiga! TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: En México y otros países latinoamericanos se están preparando para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos (1o de noviembre) y el Día de los Muertos (2 de noviembre). Estas dos fiestas cristianas fueron mezcladas con antiguos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas. Ellas enfatizan que la muerte es parte normal del ciclo de la vida y que los difuntos no se olvidan de sus seres quer-idos. Esta es la base de la devoción católica a los santos: Dios es Dios de los vivos y no de los muertos (Mateo 22:32); por eso los muertos siguen vivos en una nueva dimensión. En estos días las familias pasan tiempo en los cementerios, visitando las tumbas de sus parientes y amistades, lavando las lápidas, poni-endo arreglos de zempasuchil y encendiendo veladoras. En casa, muchos latinos construyen y adornan altarcitos dedicándolos a las almas de sus seres queridos que han muerto. En los al-tares se encuentran papel picado, fotos de los difuntos, artículos religiosos, comida, bebida, cigarritos y otras cosas que los ya muertos dis-frutaban durante sus vidas.
