PASTOR’S PEN
When the wine runs out of our lives, the
intervention of Jesus is always welcome. It would
be a mistake to think that miracles, such as the
one we had today, were events that happened
long ago. No. These were recorded in the Gospels
by John as signs for us of what Jesus Christ can
do and still does for those who believe. Yes,
miracles can and do regularly happen.
It is funny, however, that people who don’t really
believe in them are the ones who are leaving nine
copies of prayers on church seats urging others to
make nine other copies ad infinitum, or else!
Those who decide positively to have Christ
present in their marriage, not just for the wedding
day, and not just for the sake of respectability, will
always know where to turn when the inevitable
Cana happens in their relationship. Christ turns the
water of selfishness into the wine of love. He and
only He can do this. A man I know, when he hears
the story of Cana this morning will totally believe
the sign of the six stone wine jars, for he believes
in Jesus’ intervention into his own marriage when,
as he says, “Christ turned beer into furniture for me. I had a drinking problem, so much so that there wasn’t a decent stick of furniture in the house. It is completely through my wife’s prayers and through the power of Christ that I have been set free.”
Miracle? Why not? It is as good a sign as any.
Should Murphy’s Law invade any of our lives, let
us remember the very last words attributed to
Mary in the Gospels. Can you remember what She
said to the servants? All She said was: “Do whatever He tells you.”
There are days in everyone’s life when nothing
goes right. The car won’t start. The baby is sick.
The electricity has just been cut off. The washing
machine won’t empty. There is water coming out
of the fridge. There is a knock at the front door.
The mailman delivers a letter from the school
principal requesting an interview with you about
your son’s behavior in school. Two young
gentlemen in well-pressed dark suits and well-
groomed haircuts, with Bibles under their arms,
wish to know have you yet “found Christ.” And all
that on Monday morning. Murphy’s Law states
that, if anything can go wrong, it will. O’Toole’s
commentary on Murphy’s Law states that Murphy
was an optimist.
An exaggeration, maybe, but the probability of
things going wrong make even the happiest of
homes into an assault course where tensions rise,
and the warts, wounds and welts in our various
personalities show up as if placed under a
microscope.
Older married couples tend to take such events
with a philosophical shrug of the shoulder.
Younger married couples often find the reality of
Murphy’s Law too much to bear. Having at last
discovered that one hasn’t married the ideal
husband or wife, but rather a person who is
deeply wounded by sin and selfishness, as we all
are, having discovered the awful ordinariness of
the person to whom you are now committed for
life, the temptation is always to make hasty
decisions. It is said that when Henry Ford and his
wife were celebrating their 50th wedding
anniversary, she was asked if either herself or
Henry ever once contemplated divorce in all those
years. She was shocked at the question.
“Divorce?”, she said. “No! Not even once. Murder? Yes, many times!”
The heady wine of attraction and romance runs
out of many relationships only to be replaced with
the dull tasteless water of routine. Let me assure
you the same happens in all walks of life, including
the priesthood where the initial enthusiasm and
idealism can often fade into the dullness and
routine of endless meetings going nowhere fast.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Follow Him and change your life. The message of Jesus is clear.
When He says those words, “change your life,” He is asking you
to make a profound change in your whole life. To do that, first,
we must listen to the Gospel and learn who Jesus is. And only
once we begin to know Him, can we choose to follow Him and to
help Him help others. That’s what it means to be a disciple.
There are many aspects of His life that help us to understand how
we must change to be more like Jesus. He calls us to lift up the
poor, to cherish and love them; to fight injustices; to spread the
Good News; and to share all the goods of God’s creation so that
they are not kept only by a few. And while we cannot change our
life in one day, we can take the steps to follow Him every day to
become better disciples.
I write to you today to suggest one meaningful way for us to
follow Jesus by making a gift of hope through the Archbishop’s
Charity and Development Drive (ABCD). The ABCD, which
supports our community through life-changing programs and
ministries, is a way for us to put our faith into action. Every gift
opens the door to a better tomorrow, a better life, and a more
hopeful future.
Hope has a name: Jesus. To put our faith in Jesus means we must put it into action through
charity. Our archdiocesan programs and ministries effect change, share the love of Christ, and
bring hope to people in need. In the words of Pope Benedict, “A world without God is a world
without hope. A world without God is a world without a future.” Please join me in answering His
call by making a gift of hope today through the ABCD. Individually, we can change our own life,
but together, we can change the world. United, let us be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in
Charity.
Life is God’s gift to us, and what we do with it is our gift to God. Thank you and God bless you!
With gratitude and hope,
Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski
Archbishop of Miami

MASS SCHEDULES
C H U R C H O F T H E E P I P H A N Y
At a wedding in Cana Jesus changed water into wine. There are many things in our spiritual lives that should be changed. Jesus’ power is available to us too. Let us reflect on our need of this power in order to change the things in our lives that need to be changed. First reading (Isaiah 62:1-5). We hear of a new wedding feast between God and his people.
Second reading (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Though there are many spiritual gifts, they all come from the same Spirit, and should be used for building up the community.
Gospel (John 2:1-12). Jesus fulfils the prophecy of Isaiah. The changing of water into wine is a symbol of the old order yielding to the new.
“BUT GOD DOES”
During the past week, every Catholic family known to the Archdiocese of Miami received a letter from Archbishop Wenski, in anticipation of the Annual Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive. The Archbishop once again is asking us to continue the great work of helping him to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, care for the sick and dying. He also asks us to assist the poorest of the parishes and schools, provide shelter and care for the homeless, and to aid in the education of priests for the Archdiocese. As you know, the Archbishop only makes one appeal a year to help the needy and calls upon us as Christians to share whatever we have with the less fortunate brothers and sisters. Through your generosity to the Appeal, the Archbishop is able to serve the caring ministries in the counties of Monroe, Dade and Broward. Epiphany Parish has always been the leader in these appeals, and next Sunday you will once again, through your pledges, be the friend, the neighbor or the stranger who provides love and comfort for the needy. If it weren’t for you, it would be impossible to serve the needy people of God. An elderly ill woman who was being cared for in one of our facilities, asked her special aide, “Mary, thank you for taking such care of me. Who pays for all of this?” The Aide looked at her and responded. “Audrey, the money that supports you and hundreds of others really comes from strangers in the Archdiocese…But I bet God knows them very well.” When you make your pledge next week, you will feel very special because you offered a helping hand to many people like Audrey…so be as generous as possible and remember these poor souls may not know your name… “But God Does.”

PLAN FOR TOMORROW
Tomorrow is a special day... Because it is unspent...
And so it offers all its time... For us to be content...
It has not even made a start...
And therefore, it is free... For us to use in any way...
To keep us company... We may devote its hours to...
A very worthy cause...
Or figure every minute as...
Another chance to pause... In any case we ought to stop...
And think of it today... And try to measure out our work...
With time enough for play...
We ought to make a schedule for...
Our labor and our rest... So, every second will be one...
In which we do our best.
CHAPLET OF THE DIVINE MERCY
Everyone is invited to come and pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy every Saturday after the 8:00 AM Mass, followed by Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament until 9:00 AM. Join us!

Because of you...
The Archbishop’s Charities Drive changes lives.
2 0 1 9 A . B . C . D .
Archbishop Wenski reminds us that we are the Catholic Community
of South Florida that changes lives. Because of our commitment to
share our generosity and faith with others, Catholic Charities
continue to make a difference in the lives of children, the elderly,
people with disabilities, and the poor through ministries providing
help and hope.
Next Sunday is the Archbishop’s Charities Drive. The Archbishop is
inviting all of you to be One in Faith, One in Hope, and One in Charity
for the most abandoned. Your gift will make a difference in the lives
of children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and the poor.
Most of you have already received a letter from the Archbishop, and
probably have responded directly to him with your pledge or gift.
Those of you who have not, will have the opportunity to make that
pledge next weekend on January 26 and 27.
