September 30, 2018Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)
Nm 11:25–29; Jas 5:1–6; Mk 9:38–43, 45, 47–48The tapestry scene may not seem to have much to do
with the readings, yet it does. Let me explain: This wall-size work of art depicts the murder decreed by Herod of allthe children two years and under. It was his desperateeffort to extinguish any possibility that the Messiah mighteventually contest his throne.
The reading of James could very well be applied to thegreedy and avaricious Herod. “You have lived on earth inluxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for theday of [your own] slaughter” (James 5:5). All the wealth, authority, and success he had only led him to be moregrasping and insecure. Anyone who sees a threat to hisown well-being in the birth of a child reveals his owninternal poverty of spirit.
Rather than remove the little ones from our lives, weshould do all we can to edify and maintain their faith.Jesus, as well as James, has harsh words for anyone whowould lead a little one to sin.
Herod was the first who needed to hear the words ofthe Messiah he was trying to silence. If anything causesyou to sin, even something as precious as a hand or foot,itʼs better to cut it off and live physically impaired ratherthan maintain apparent wholeness while spiritually rottingfrom within. The life of our souls and that of the little onesis of paramount importance, and no material securityshould be placed ahead of it.
—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

Numbers 11:25-29
Psalm 19
James 5:1-6
Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48
Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word:
For years the Israelites looked to Moses to speak on the
Lord’s behalf. Similarly, the disciples looked to Jesus to
drive out demons. But today we hear first of God bestowing
the gift of prophecy on seventy elders and then of a stranger
driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Moses and Jesus re-
spond the same way to the objections of others: the spirit of
the Lord is upon these people. They are on our side.
Question of the Week: How do I put too much faith in those impermanent things
that bring me wealth and comfort? How can I express the
Spirit who I received in baptism to others?

Santiago 5, 1-6
Marcos 9, 38-43. 45. 47-48
