A Note from Our Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

We move forward this weekend into Ordinary Time as the Christmas season has concluded, and still give thanks for the observance of our Savior's birth that we sustained for several days. Under the restrictions of the pandemic, and with many exercising extreme caution, our celebration was different this year as we're well aware, and yet beautiful and joyful, despite bearing the burdens of tough times. I continue to express gratitude to all for the many ways our people participated. In particular, I thank our Paramus Council of the Knights of Columbus here at our parish and Visitation as well. Members are involved in the life and ministry of our communities in a number of ways, and share their gifts and blessings. Each year at Christmas, as well as Easter, they have presented a generous financial gift to our parishes, and they did so again this Christmas, for which I am so touched and appreciative. The concern they continue to show helps us to obtain the means of supporting parish life here in Paramus, and so my special thanks go out to them. Like many groups and organizations, their activity has been compromised by COVID-19, with meetings and certain events suspended for the time being. We miss the regular schedule to which we're accustomed, but trust that this year brings the hope of returning to it as soon as we can. And so to our Knights, again, my sincere appreciation for your presence and ministry in our two parishes, and for the most generous offering you have presented during the Christmas season. Let's give thanks for all of our Knights serving in parishes around the nation, and ask that the Lord stir in the minds and hearts of many of our men the willingness to join their ranks and be a part of the work. Our members have served for many years, and I know how much it would mean to them to see more and more younger men be a part of their communion. May that be at the center of the prayers we offer with and for them, especially those of thanks for their kindness.

Our liturgy this Sunday is a special invitation to keep discovering Christ and welcome the life into which he called his first followers, and calls us as well. The weeks ahead bring us into the heart of Jesus' life and public ministry. We are transformed and strengthened by it, welcoming a sense of hope and peace, and aware that his life continues on through the mission we share as his people. We listen to the Gospels stories not only to find the foundation of Christian belief and ministry, but in particular, to discover it at work in the daily opportunities that we have to live our faith. In it, we receive so much, and also hear the call to be a part of what we extend and offer to each other. It remains our abiding privilege to share that life and ministry again this year, with the hopes and longings we have, and even with the challenges we need to surmount, especially those brought on by the pandemic. And so this weekend, I invite us all to take up our journey together once again, and allow our weekly, and even daily, listening to God's word guide us and be that source of nourishment and strength. Events of all kinds in our nation and throughout the world continue to remind us how much we need Christ's love to heal and lift up humankind. Let's believe we are part of that great life, in our homes and parish, and in all the times and spaces we can live out our faith each day. May the way forward in ministry build up the Church everywhere, and reveal to all of us our sharing in it as God's family.

Baptism

The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated for infants on the second and fourth weekends of each month, except during the Lenten season. The celebration may take place during the 10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. Mass on Sunday, or at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Parents are invited to contact Judy Fanelli, even before your baby is born, so that participation in our preparation program can be arranged and the baptism planned.

Reconciliation The sacrament of Reconciliation is offered in the church on Saturdays between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Personal appointments for other times are available and can be made by contacting Father Jim.

During the Lenten Season, a communal Celebration of Reconciliation is offered in conjunction with Our Lady of the Visitation parish.

Vocations Are you being called to priesthood or religious life? As you discern God's calling, explore www.rcan.org/vocation. Ministry to the Ill and Homebound At times, physical injury, old age, or debilitating disease prevents our parishioners from participating regularly in the celebration of the Eucharist. During such times, contact with the community of faith is needed more than ever before. We can arrange for you to receive the Eucharist, the sacrament of Reconciliation, and/or the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in your home or hospital room. Please call the Parish Center if you wish to be visited.

Parish Membership If you are new to the parish, please submit a completed parish census form. Blank forms are available in the Gathering Space and on our website. Families already registered with the parish are encouraged to keep current their membership information.

Initiation into the Catholic Church The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of formation and initiation for those (age seven and older) who have never been baptized and wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Formation and initiation opportunities also exist for adults baptized into the Roman Catholic Church as infants, but who have not received the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist.

Christians baptized in Eastern Orthodox Churches or in communions other than Roman Catholic who wish to enter into the fullness of Catholic communion may also participate in the RCIA formation process.

Visitation Academy Parents wishing to provide their children with a quality Catholic education are encouraged to consider Visitation Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Located in Paramus and supported by the Catholic parishes of Paramus and Rochelle Park, Visitation Academy offers classes for Grades pre-K3 through eight. Intention Requests We can spiritually remember an anniversary of marriage, ordination or death, birthday, or other significant milestone for the living or deceased by dedicating the items we use for worship: the sanctuary lamps which burn constantly before the Blessed Sacrament in the church and Holy Family Chapel, the altar candles which remain lit during each liturgical celebration, the bread and wine consecrated at Mass, the Advent wreath candles, and the Paschal candle. Masses may also be offered for a special intention.

A set donation is requested for each intention, a card is provided, and the intention is printed in the bulletin. To request an intention, please visit the Parish Center.
