CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX!

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN There are two dramatic stories that we hear in the Mass today and both of them are about listening. The first story we hear is from the Book of Genesis. It is the story of Abraham, that great man of faith, honored by Christians and Jews and Moslems alike. The story is simple. God has given Abraham a son in his old age, Isaac, the joy of his life. And then you can imagine the heartache when !Abraham hears God telling him, “Take you son Isaac, your only one whom you love, and offer him up as a sacrifice.” And the !amazing thing is Abraham does not hesitate. He is ready to listen to God, the God who gave him Isaac, the God who now wants him back. And even as Abraham is ready to sacrifice his son, he listens again as God calls out, “Abraham do not touch the boy. I see how devoted you are to me.” God was testing Abraham, to see what faith was really in his heart. And Abraham listened and obeyed.! That is the first dramatic story. The second is even more dramatic and it too is about listening. The gospel today gives us the story of the Lord Jesus with His chosen apostles going to Mount Tabor. And there He is transfigured before them, glowing in light, glowing in His radiance as the onlyBegotten Son of the Father. But even as Peter, James and John gaze on this vision, they hear the voice of God the Father from heaven, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” O yes, the apostles must have held on to that blessed sight of seeing Jesus in all His glory. But even more, when the vision was over, when what they saw was a distant memory, they could still hear the Father’s command, “Listen to Him.” The vision lasted a moment; the listening demanded a lifetime.! Lent is about listening, listening to God in prayer, giving God the chance to speak to your soul, letting God speak even through !others. This week we will celebrate the feast day on one of our own American saints, St. Katherine Drexel. She was certainly a saint of listening, a saint who listened to God and listened as God spoke through others. She was born into the wealthy Drexel family of !Philadelphia. She could have enjoyed a life of ease, enjoying her tremendous wealth, keeping it for herself. But her parents also taught her to help the Church. And this she did, supporting the missions among the Native American and African American people of the Southern and Western states of our country. She wanted to do more. And so she went to Rome and asked the wise old Pope Leo XIII to send more missionaries to our country. And the Pope asked her a simple question, “Why do you not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine could have turned away. But she did not. She heard God’s voice in Pope Leo’s question. She gave up her wealth, supported the work of schools and other houses of service among Black and Indian people, all because she listened.! St. Katherine Drexel did not have the experience that Peter, James and John had, the Transfiguration on the holy mountain. But she had something else, something more important. She had the grace to hear God calling her and the grace to listen and to follow. We do not have a vision on a holy mountain either. But we do have that “something else.” We have the Lord Jesus speaking to us every day of Lent and every day of our lives. May we have the grace to listen. May we be ready to obey and to follow. And deep within our souls, may we hear the Father’s voice saying to us, “This is my Beloved Son. Listened to him.”!!

PRAYER FOR THE SECOND WEEK OF LENTSunday Loving God, there is so much darkness in my life and I hide from you. Take my hand and lead me out of the shadows of my fear. Help me to change my heart. Bring me to your truth and help me to respond to your generous love. Let me recognize the fullness of your love which will fill my life. Free me from the darkness in my heart.!Monday Lord, your commandment of love is so simple and so challenging. Help me to let go of my pride, to be humble in my penance. I want only to live the way you ask me to live, to love the way you ask me to love. I ask this through your Son, Jesus, who stands at my side !today and always.!Tuesday God in heaven and in my life, guide me and protect me. I so often believe I can save myself and I always end in failure. Lead me with your love away from harm and guide me on the right path. May your Spirit inspire the Church and make us an instrument of your love and guidance. Thank you for your care for me.!Wednesday God of Love, through this Lenten journey, purify my desire to serve you. Free me from any temptations to judge others, to place !myself above others. Please let me surrender even my impatience with others, that with your love and your grace, I might be less and less absorbed with myself and more and more full of the desire to follow you, in laying down my life according to your example.!Thursday Loving God, I hear your invitation, “Come back to me” and I am filled with such a longing to return to you. Show me the way to !return. Lead me this day in the good works I do in your name. Send your Spirit to guide me and strengthen my faith. I ask only to feel your love in my life today.!Friday Loving God, Caring parent, I am a child who so often turns my back on your love. Please accept my small acts of sorrow today and help to release me from the selfabsorption that closes my heart to you. As I journey through Lent, let me remember the feast you have prepared for me in the resurrection and let me be filled with thanks to you.!Saturday God of infinite love, you shower me with limitless gifts in my life. In my every thought and action today guide me to the bright and loving light of your kingdom. Help me to be aware of the many ways you allow me to share in your life so intimately today. Thank you for the gifts you have placed in my life. Let me be grateful every moment of this day.!!

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Help children unwrap the gift of Lent

The Catholic practice of giving something up for Lent !abstaining from a favorite food or activity develops !selfcontrol, serves as penance for sin, and can lead to a greater !appreciation of our blessings. Even young children can benefit from a Lenten sacrifice but choosing one that’s too hard can turn Lent into a chore. Try these ideas to help choose a !rewarding sacrifice:!Give up something valuable. This can be a favor ite desser t, game, toy or activity.!Make it reasonable. The sacr ifice should be something !specific and age appropriate so that she will be able to see it through.!Add Back. An alternative to giving something up is to add instead: more prayer, an extra chore, a daily devotion such as the Rosary.!Give up luxuries. Consider encouraging your youngster to pick something that may not be good for him anyway for !example, sweets, soft drinks, or television watching during the week. Make healthy choices for Lenten abstinence. He may even decide to do without it when Lent is over.!

Born in 1858, into a prominent Philadelphia family, Katharine became imbued with love for God and neighbor. She took an avid interest in the material and spiritual wellbeing of African Americans and Native Americans. She began by donating !money but soon concluded that more was needed. The lacking !ingredient was people.! Katherine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Native Americans and African Americans, whose members would work for the betterment of those they were called to serve. From the age of 33 until her death in 1955, she dedicated her life and a fortune of 20 million dollars to this work.! In 1894, Mother Drexel took part in opening the first mission school for Native Americans, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other schools quickly followed for Native Americans west of the !Mississippi River and for African Americans in the southern part of the United States. In 1915 she also founded Xavier !University in New Orleans. At her death there were more than 500 sisters teaching in 63 schools throughout the country. Katharine was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 20, 1988, and canonized on October 1, 2000 by the same Pontiff.!!

PRAYER God, You called St. Kathar ine Drexel to teach the message of the Gospel and to bring the life of the Eucharist to the African American and Native American peoples. By her prayers and example, help us to work for justice among the poor and the oppressed, and keep us undivided in love in the !Eucharistic community of Your Church. Amen! !

REFLECTION OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT!

Last Sunday the Liturgy presented Jesus tempted by Satan in the desert, but victorious over temptation. In the light of this Gospel, we are again made aware of out condition as sinners but also of the victory over evil for those who undertake the journey of conversion and, like Jesus, want to do the Father’s will. In this second Sunday of Lent, the Church points out to us the end of this journey of !conversion, namely participation in the glory of Christ, which shines on the face of the obedient Servant, who died and rose for us.! The Gospel page recounts the event of the Transfiguration, which takes place at the height of Jesus’ public ministry. He is on his way to Jerusalem, where the prophecies of the “servant of God” and his redemptive sacrifice are to be fulfilled. The crowds did not !understand this: presented with a Messiah who contrasted with their earthly expectations, they abandoned Him. They thought the !Messiah would be the liberator from Roman domination, the emancipator of the homeland, and they do not like Jesus’ perspective and so they leave Him. Neither do the Apostles understand the words with which Jesus proclaims the outcome of his mission in the !glorious passion. They do not understand! Jesus thus chooses to give to Peter, James and John a foretaste of His glory, which He will have after the Resurrection, in order to confirm them in faith and encourage them to follow Him on the trying path, on the Way of the Cross. Thus, on a high mountain, immersed in prayer, He is transfigured before them: His face and His entire person irradiate a !blinding light. The three disciples are frightened, as a cloud envelops them and the Father’s voice sounds from above, as at the Baptism on the Jordan: “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him” (Mk 9:7). Je4sus is the SonmadeServant, sent into the world to save us all through the Cross, fulfilling the plan of salvation. His full adherence to God’s will renders his humanity transparent to the glory of God, who is love. ! Jesus thus reveals Himself as the perfect icon of the Father, the radiance of his glory. He is the fulfillment of revelation; that is why beside Him appear transfigured, Moses and Elijah appear; they represent the Law and the Prophets, so as to signify that everything !finishes and begins in Jesus, in His passion and in His glory.! The instructions for the disciples and for us is this: “Listen to Him!” Listen to Jesus. He is the Savior: follow Him. To listen to Christ, in fact, entails taking up the logic of His Pascal Mystery, setting out on the journey with Him to make of oneself a gift of love to others, in docile obedience to the will of God, with an attitude of detachment from worldly things and of interior freedom. One must, in other words, be willing to “lose one’s very life” (cf. Mk 8:35), by giving it up so that all men might be saved: thus, we will meet in !eternal happiness. The path to Jesus always leads us to happiness, don’t forget it! Jesus’ way always leads us to happiness. There will always be a cross, trials in the middle, but at the end we are always led to happiness. Jesus does not deceive us. He promised us !happiness and will give it to us if we follow His ways.! With Peter, James and John we too climb the Mount of the Transfiguration today and stop in contemplation of the face of Jesus to retrieve the message and translate it into our lives; for we too can be transfigured by Love. In reality, love is capable of transfiguring everything. Love transfigures all! Do you believe this? May the Virgin Mary, whom we now invoke with the prayer of the Angelus, sustain us on this journey.!!

Lord Jesus, you are my teacher, my beloved and my life. You draw me close to all people and to the divine love that gave us being. Lead me now on the way of the cross, the way of love you walked to death and resurrection. Amen.!!

1) Jesus Is Condemned to Death Lord, giver of life, you come to us with healing in your hands. In response to life, we give death; in response to mercy, condemnation. To stay with you, I must stand with the one condemned to death. Breathe in me now that I may walk with you this way.!2) Jesus Carries His Cross “Your will be done,” you told your father. I watch you accept your cross. How difficult for me to accept what you ask: not what I expect to carry, not what others expect of me, but what you ask. Let me not ask for more, less or different. Here is my peace.!3) Jesus Falls the First Time The cross you accepted is real. It’s heavy and rough, and you stumble under its weight. Your Father!does not spare you the pain of your “yes.” Does my “yes” mean others will see me as weak, alone and unable? God’s dignity is not ashamed to be brought low. Lead me in your way.!4) Jesus Meets His Mother Ah, you are not alone. Along your way is an encounter . As you bear the cross we gave you, you meet the one who bore you. And so I encounter her as Mother of God. Help me meet suffering with love as I encounter others along this way.!5) Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross Your Mother , the God bearer , is fir st, but other encounters follow. Simon is pressed into helping you; I am invited, not forced, to carry your love of humanity. Is Simon eager? Ashamed, Bitter? Honored? I react in all these ways and more. Whatever way I offer it, receive my service. Teach me mercy.!6) Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus You, who met suffer ing and sinfulness with compassion, are met with rejection, shame and spitting. At last, one of us courageously shows you the face of compassion. In return, you give the beauty of your face. As Veronica holds you image, may I hold your compassion, no matter what I face along the way.!7) Jesus Falls the Second Time Is it only the physical weight? Is it the weight of knowing that those you loved until the end threw this burden at you, already bleeding from blows and scorn? When I am betrayed, I want to hit back. This is not your way. If I must fall again, reassure me that I walk with you.!8) Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem Another encounter : abandoned by men, you are met by women. Dar ing to behold you, they weep for you. You redirect their tears. Redirect mine, though I may not want to see the imperfection of my love. Strengthen my heart that I may love you better and love others better.!9) Jesus Falls the Third Time You are utter ly alone. No more encounters. Is that why your body gives out, crushed by wood, wounds and abandonment? Is this the lowest point? Your fall makes me bold to call on you, no matter how far I fall, and to go to the lowest places, or farthest peripheries, for love’s sake.!10) Jesus is Stripped of His Garments There is yet more to be taken away. You return to the Garden by a shocking route, the new Adam naked before God and humanity, naked now through human cruelty and weakness. Radically vulnerable, you teach me the way of vulnerability. I fear, yet long, to learn to love this way. 11) Jesus is Nailed to the Cross Affixed, helpless, you are pinned to pain and shame, agony and death. Your are us, the sinless become sin for us, showing us where we are, though we cannot see. You see, and yet you love. You know, yet you are with us. Here I learn the fullness of your mercy.!12) Jesus Dies on the Cross For you, it must be a relief, a lettinggo, like touching bottom after the seemingly endless free fall. For us, it is remorseless, relentless, unbearable. I stand before you in speechless woe, utter loss and emptiness. Has sin conquered? Has love failed? Or is love, after all stronger than sin and death?!13) The Body of Jesus Is Taken Down From the Cross Even in this darkest night of all, somehow light cracks in. Your beaten, discarded body is received by human hands, with compassion, courage and reverence. May I receive the stranger thusfor the stranger is you, my Christ.!14) Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb The finality lays waste my hear t. Is this the end of all things? Or is it the beginning of waiting, watching and keeping vigil? I am in two places at once: despair and hope, death and love, helplessness and new life. For you are !descended into hell yet risen to glory.!!

Final PrayerMy Jesus, your way and mine has ended but only just begun. I am content to remain here, where faith alone can keep me: with you and with my sisters and brothers. Show us the light of the Easter dawn. Amen!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! From Creative Communications for the Parish!
