CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX!

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: A MESSAGE FOR EASTER

Some time ago I was asked to visit the grandmother of a young man whom I have known for many years. His name is Kevin and his grandmother’s name, Crucita. Kevin has graduated from Pace University. He has made his family very proud of him. Somehow he has found the time to organize a program called Hope for Us which helps children with sickle cell anemia. In fact the toys from our Giving Tree at Christmas time went to those children. That is Kevin and I am very proud of him. His family taught him well. And certainly among those “teachers” was his grandmother Crucita. She suffered from dementia for the past several years, barely able to recognize Kevin or anyone else in her family. She was in a nursing home, well taken care of. And Kevin kept visiting her. She did not recognize him at all, but that did not matter. Kevin asked me to visit his grandmother and give her the sacraments. He said, “It is her time.” !Crucita received the blessed Anointing and the absolution of sins and the other parts of the ceremonies that are given to those who are soon to meet the Lord. Crucita died last year on Holy Thursday. She was surrounded by her two daughters, several relatives and Kevin. When I visited the family, what struck me was not tears, not sadness. What struck me was peace, the peace that comes from faith, the faith that Kevin and his family had, the faith Crucita had taught them to have. Kevin said to me, “It’s alright, Father. Grandma’s bags were packed. She was ready to go home to God for Easter.”! Why do I mention this as we celebrate Easter Sunday? The answer is simple: Easter is not just one day. Easter is what we are all about, all of us. It is what our lives are all about. Easter is our faith. For we are Christians. We believe that the Lord Jesus died for us on the Cross, for every one of us parents and grandparents and children and everyone else .. And we believe that He conquered death on the first Easter morning and therefore our whole world is changed. We are changed. That is our faith. We have been “Eastered” by the Risen Lord and that changes everything. For Easter means that Jesus is alive and we are alive in Him. Those are not just nicesounding words. That is our faith.. It is the faith that parents share with your children at baptism, the faith that you live in your home.!That faith tells us that Easter changes everything. Our faith tells us that life does not end in death, but rather death leads to life. It was that way for the holy women who came to the tomb on the first Easter morning, to find the tomb open, the stone rolled back, the tomb empty. The world changed for those holy woman on the first Easter day as they heard the words, “Why do you seek the Living One among the dead? He is not here. He has been raised.” Can you imagine what went through their minds? Yes, wonder, amazement, even confusion, but most of all faith, their Easter faith blossoming, budding forth like the beautiful flowers of spring. Easter changes everything. That was true for those holy women who came to find an empty tomb on the first Easter. It is true for Kevin and his family who strongly believe that Grandma Crucita is with the Risen Lord in a better Easter, an eternal Easter in heaven. And it is true for every one of us, for everyone who believes that Jesus is not dead anymore. He is alive and we are alive in Him. A mother told me that one day she and her small children were visiting a cemetery and on of them asked, “Is Jesus buried here?” And the mother gave a beautiful answer. “No, Jesus is not buried here. Jesus is not buried anywhere. He is alive and with us. Just close your eyes and He will show you that He is with you always.”! After our Easter Mass is finished, we leave the church. We give one another Easter greetings and perhaps spend some time with !family and friends. But then this feast day will be over. But hopefully Easter will not be over. Hopefully we will take Easter and live it. We will take our Easter faith and share it. Do not lose Easter ever. Do not lose the Risen Christ. And be ready to share your Easter faith with those who are not with us. Remember Jesus is not buried in a tomb. Jesus is not buried anywhere any more. Jesus is alive and He is with us. All we have to do is close our eyes and He will show you that He is with you always.!!

On behalf of your priests, we wish you a blessed Easter. You are always in our prayers. May the Risen Jesus be with us all on this Easter day and always!!

PRAYER FOR EASTER

God of all Life, we rejoice with you in this day of

death’s defeat. To the bewilderedeyes of your disciples,

Christ’s death looked like tragicloss, but you turned it into a

great gain. Give us the faith yougave them to believe that,

through the creative power of your love, even the greatest

tragedy can be transformed and become life!giving. May our

faith strengthen throughout the fifty days of this Easter Seasonas we pray to embrace your gift

of new and everlasting life. Amen.

EASTER SUNDAY!

CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to

5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.!

AN EASTER MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS

“Christ is Risen, Hallelujah!” We can hear the echo of the words the Angel addressed to the women who had hastened to the tomb:!“Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen” (Mt 23:7). We feel as if this invitation is also directed to us; to “hasten” and to “go” announce to the men and women of our times this message of joy and hope, of certain hope, because from the dawn of the third day, Jesus who was crucified, is raised. Death no longer has the last word. Life does! This is our certainty. The tomb does not have the last word; it is not death, it is life! This is why we repeat “Christ is Risen”, many times. Because in Him, the tomb was overcome. Life was born.! In light of this event which constitutes the true and real news of history and the world, we are called to be new men and women in accordance with the Spirit, confirming the value of life. There is life! This is already the beginning of rebirth! We will be men and women of resurrection, men and women of life, if in the midst of the events that afflict the world (there are many of them today), in the midst of worldliness which distances us from God, we will know how to offer gestures of solidarity and gestures of welcome, !strengthening the universal desire for peace and the hope for an environment free from degradation. These are common and human signs, which if supported and kept alive by faith in the Risen Lord, acquire a power that is well beyond our abilities. And this is so !because Christ is alive and working in history through his Holy Spirit: He redeems our shortcomings and reaches each human heart and gives back hope to whomever is oppressed and suffering.! May the Virgin Mary, silent witness of the death and Resurrection of her son Jesus, help us to be clear signs of the Risen Christ amid the affairs of the world, so that those who suffer tribulation and difficulties do not fall victim to pessimism, defeat, and resignation, but find in us many brothers and sisters who offer them support and solace. May our Mother help us to believe firmly in the Resurrection of Jesus: Jesus is Risen; He is alive here among us and this is a worthy mystery of salvation with the ability to transform hearts and life. May she intercede especially for the persecuted and oppressed Christian communities which, in many parts of the world today, are called to a more difficult and courageous testimony.! !! ! ! ! ! ! NEXT SUNDAY IS DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

History of the Message and Devotion to Divine Mercy The Message of the Divine Mercy was revealed by Our Lord Himself to a humble Polish nun, Sister (now Saint) Faustina Kowalska!who died in 1039. The message that Sr. Faustina received fro the Lord was not only directed toward her personal growth in faith but also toward the good of all people. With the command of Our Lord to paint an image according to the pattern that Sr. Faustina had seen, came also a request to have this image venerated, first in the Sister’s chapel, and then throughout the world. The same is true with the revelations of the Chaplet. The Lord requested that this Chaplet be said not only by Sr. Faustina, but by others: “Encourage souls to say the Chaplet that I have given you.”! The same is true of the revelation of the Feast of Mercy. “The feast of Mercy emerged from my very depths of tenderness. It is my desire that it solemnly be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the fount of !My Mercy.”! These requests of the Lord given to Sr. Faustina between 1931 and 1938 can be considered the beginning of the Divine Mercy !Message and Devotion in the new forms. But it is important to remember that this message of The Divine Mercy, revealed to St. Faustina and to our present generation, is not new. It is a powerful reminder of who God is and has been from the very beginning. This truth that God is in His very nature Love and Mercy Itself, is given to us by the Holy Scripture. In His goodness and love God chose to reveal Himself to us, His creatures, and to make known His eternal plan of salvation. This He had done partly through the Old !Testament Patriarchs, Moses and the Prophets, and fully through His only Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. In the person of Jesus Christ, conceived through power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, the unseen God was made visible.!Jesus reveals God as Merciful Father The Old Testament speaks frequently and with great tenderness about God’s mercy. Yet, it was Jesus, who through His words and actions, revealed to us in an extraordinary way, God as a loving Father, rich in mercy and abounding in great kindness and love. In Jesus’ merciful love and care for the poor, the oppressed, the sick and the sinful, and especially in His freely choosing to take upon Himself the punishment for our sins on the Cross so that all may be freed from sin and death, He manifested in a superabundant and radical way the greatness of God’s love and mercy for humanity. In His person as GodMan, one in being with the Father, Jesus both reveals and is God’s Love and Mercy Itself.!The message of God’s Love and Mercy is especially made known by the Gospels. The good news revealed through Jesus Christ is that God’s love for each person knows no bounds, and no sin or infidelity, no matter how horrible, will separate us from God and His love when we turn to Him in confidence, and seek his mercy. God’s will is our !salvation. He has done all on our behalf, but since He made us free, He invites us to choose Him and partake of His divine life. We become partakers of His divine life when we believe in His revealed truth and trust Him, when we love Him and remain true to His word, when we honor Him and seek His Kingdom, when we receive Him in Communion and turn away from sin; when we are !mutually caring and forgiving.!!

Let us all prepare for the Feast of Divine Mercy next Sunday by reflecting on the mercy of Jesus shown to us on the cross. One simple thing would be to look at the Cross in your home or at the end of your rosary each day during this week and thank the Lord for !extending His mercy to us on the Cross. And may we all put our trust in Our Merciful Lord, saying to him often each day, “Jesus, I trust in you.”!

Barney Casey became one of Detroit’s bestknown priests even though he was not allowed to preach formally or to hear confessions!! Barney came from a large family in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. At the age of 21, and after he had worked as a logger, a hospital orderly, a streetcar operator, and a prison guard, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukeewhere he found the studies difficult. He left there, and in 1896, joined the Capuchins in Detroit, taking the name Solanus. His studies for the priesthood were again arduous.! On July 24, 1904, Solanus was ordained, but because his knowledge of theology was judged to be weak, he was not given permission to hear confessions or to preach. A Franciscan Capuchin who knew him well said this annoying restriction “brought forth in him a greatness and a holiness that might never have been realized in any other way.”! During his 14 years as porter and sacristan in Yonkers, New York, the people there recognized Solanus as a fine speaker. James Derum, his biographer writes, “For, though he was forbidden to deliver doctrinal sermons, he could give inspirational talks, or feverinos, as the Capuchins termed them.” His spiritual fire deeply impressed his listeners.! Father Solanus served at parishes in Manhattan and Harlem before returning to Detroit, where he was porter and sacristan for 20 years at St. Bonaventure Monastery. Every Wednesday afternoon he conducted wellattended services for the sick. A coworker estimates that on the average day 150 to 200 people came to see Father Solanus in the front office. Most of them came to receive his blessing; 40 to 50 came for consultation. Many people considered him instrumental in cures and other blessings they received.! Father Solanus’ sense of God’s providence inspired many of his visitors. “Blessed be God in all his designs” was one of his favorite expressions.! The many friends of Father Solanus helped the Capuchins begin a soup kitchen during the Depression. Capuchins are still feeding the hungry there today.! In failing health, Solanus was transferred to the Capuchin novitiate in Huntington, Indiana, in 1946, where he lived for ten years until needing to be hospitalized in Detroit. Father Solanus died on July 31, 1957. An estimated 20,000 people passed by his coffin before his burial in St. Bonaventure Church in Detroit.! At the funeral Mass, the provincial Father Gerald said: “His was a life of service and love for people like me and you. When he was not himself sick, he nevertheless suffered with and for you that were sick. When he was not physically hungry, he hungered with people like you. He had a divine love for people. He loved people for what he could do for themand for God, through them.”! In 1960, a Father Solanus Guild was formed in Detroit to aid Capuchin seminarians. By 1967, the guild had 5,000 membersmany of them grateful recipients of his practical advice and his comforting assurance that God would not abandon them in their trials . !Solanus Casey was declared Venerable in 1995, and beatified on November 18, 2017.!!

!

His biographer James Patrick Derum writes that eventually Father Solanus was weary from bearing the burdens of the people who!visited him. “Long since, he had come to know the Christtaught truth that pure love of God and one’s fellowmen as children of God are in the final event all that matter. Living this truth ardently and continuously had made him, spiritually, a free manfree from !slavery to passions, from selfseeking, from selfindulgence, from selfpityfree to serve wholly both God and man” !(The Porter of St. Bonaventure’s,)!
