Third Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019 Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy. — Isaiah 35:10a

REASON TO REJOICE Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). TODAY’S READINGS First Reading—The barren deserts will rejoice and flower (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10). Psalm—Lord, come and save us (Psalm 146). Second Reading— e patient, for the coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain (James 5:7-10). Dear Parishioners RECONCILIATION MONDAY … Just a friendly reminder that on Monday, December 16, from 4pm to 8pm, the Archdiocese of New York will celebrate Reconciliation Monday. All the parishes of the archdiocese will have their doors open to hear confessions from 4pm to 8pm. Confessions will be offered here, in the lower church. ADVENT RETREAT DAY … On December 18 the parishes of our cluster (St. Raymond, St. Helena, and Santa Maria) will be holding an Advent Retreat Evening. It will occur at St. Helena in Spanish that evening, and it will be held in English at Santa Maria. We will NOT have a Spanish language Mass that evening here at the Church, and will instead have that evening’s Spanish language Mass at St. Helena. Flyers are in the rear of the church. CHRISTMAS BREAK MASS SCHEDULE … From December 23 through January 1, we will NOT have a 7am Weekday Mass. 7am Weekday Masses will resume on January 2, 2020. CHRISTMAS EVE AND DAY … We begin our celebration of Christmas with our annual Christmas Eve Concert at 8:15pm, followed by our bilingual Christmas Evening Mass at 9 pm … CHRISTMAS DAY ... Masses at 8 am, 9 am in Spanish, 10:30 am (Family Mass) and 12 noon. Come join us as we welcome the baby Jesus into our lives once again. RECTORY OFFICES … The rectory offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 25 and Thursday, December 26. MARY MOTHER OF GOD … On January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. A bilingual Mass will be offered at 5:30pm, followed by Eucharistic Adoration, on December 31. On January 1, there will be a single Mass at 9am. Come and start the new Secular Year with our Lord, Jesus Christ. CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE … "Happy Advent! Advent is a time of hope, peace, joy and love. Let us as a parish community spread our love and give joy and hope to others. The Knights of Columbus will be collecting Christmas gifts for the children of our Elementary School and CCD program, who would benefit from the generosity of the parish. If you are willing to purchase a gift or two for the collection, please see one of the Knights or a wife of a Knight in the back of the church after every Mass. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome

VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area. SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS (c. 1542-1591) December 14 How beautiful the experience of love for God and neighbor, a fire deep within! How disheartening when love suddenly cools and our souls grow dark, our prayer arid. How painful when misunderstanding, even rejection, comes our way, sometimes from those we least expect. For all such “seasons of the soul,” an inspiring fellow-pilgrim is the poet and mystic John of the Cross. As a young Carmelite, he was recruited by Teresa of Ávila for her Discalced (“barefoot,” evangelical poverty) Carmelite reform, striving to renew the Church from within after the Protestant Reformation had led countless religious away. John suffered unspeakably harsh abuse, even imprisonment, from friars who rejected this reform. Yet during these times of deepest suffering, John composed spiritual masterpieces that still guide souls to God, their titles reflecting his own painful yet ultimately victorious journey: from The Dark Night of the Soul through The Ascent of Mount Carmel to his Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love. Los católicos deben casarse en la iglesia y, si es casado sólo civilmente, debe hablar con uno de los sacerdotes acerca de recibir el sacramento en la iglesia (llamado convalidación) ... por favor saber que son bienvenidos para hacer preguntas y recibir dirección y consejos sobre el SACRAMENTO DEL MATRIMONIO … Por favor recuerde de asegurar la fecha para su ceremonia antes de hacer cualquier arreglos con los proveedores, los conductores de la limosina, la familia y los amigos. REGISTRACION PARROQUIAL … todos los miembros de la parroquia debe estar registrados y recibir correspondencia parroquial y los sobres … si usted es un adulto (18 años y más), debe registrarse para recibir los sobres y otra información de la parroquia … tienes que estar registrado para poder recibir cartas de recomendación, cartas financieras, precios de matriculación y otros temas relacionados con la parroquia … ¿CÓMO REGISTRARSE? Llegar a la rectoría en Castle Hill Avenue. ¿TARDE A LA IGLESIA? ... ¿Por qué? Por favor, arreglar llegar temprano a la misa, para orar, leer la Santa Escritura y estar listo cuando empezamos --- hará la misa más devota y significativa para todos … Recuerde, si usted no oye las lecturas, usted no oye las enseñanzas de Cristo. San Jerónimo escribió, "Ignorar las Escrituras es ignorar a Cristo." Llegar a la iglesia a tiempo es importante. VISITANDO A LOS ENFERMOS O LOS CONFINADOS EN LA CASA ... Deben de residir en nuestra área parroquial. SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ (c. 1542-1591) 14 de diciembre Juan Yepes nació en España siendo hijo de un noble y de “una mujer de pueblo”. Ingresó a los 21 años a la orden religiosa de los Carmelitas Descalzos, donde asumiría el nombre de Juan de la Cruz. En 1567 conoció a Teresa de Ávila, quien influenciaría su corazón y espiritualidad y posteriormente, junto a ella, renovarían su comunidad religiosa. No obstante, los talentos y vida espiritual de Juan de la Cruz generaron muchos celos en sus hermanos religiosos a tal grado de que en 1577 lo encerraron ellos mismos durante nueve meses, expuesto a abusos y humillaciones. Gracias a una “noche oscura” logra escapar y vuelve a su monasterio, en el que se le siguió maltratando e ignorando. Durante su cautiverio y años posteriores, escribió los más bellos tratados de espiritualidad y mística, entre ellos La noche oscura del alma. No obstante, su obra no fue valorada sino hasta después de su muerte. MOTIVO DE REGOCIJO El color morado se usa durante el Adviento para expresar el carácter de este tiempo de preparación espiritual para la Navidad y la “venida del Señor”. Pero en el Tercer Domingo de Adviento, anteriormente conocido como Domingo Gaudete (“regocijo” en latín), se puede agregar el color rosa al ambiente litúrgico. Toda la liturgia está impregnada de regocijo. La primera lectura de hoy y el Evangelio proclaman la realidad de la obra salvadora de Dios entre nosotros. Isaías describe con exuberancia la idílica transformación de toda la creación como resultado de la presencia de Dios en medio de su pueblo. En el Evangelio, Jesús vincula la profecía de Isaías con lo que está ocurriendo en su propio ministerio. Además de lista de curaciones de Isaías (los ciegos, los cojos, los leprosos y los sordos), la presencia de Jesús ofrece otras dos razones para regocijarnos: “Los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia el Evangelio” (Mateo 11:5).
