The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Sixteen: The Visita on, con nued…

How to Win Friends and Influence People is the name of a famous book that was wri en by Dale Carnegie and published in 1936. The story of the Visita on of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth could be called “How to Win Converts and Evangelize People.” With that in mind, what are some things we can take away from this Visit?

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s gree ng, the infant Saint John the Bap st leaped in her womb for joy at the presence of Jesus. This shows that babies in the womb are definitely human persons, with percep on, sensi vity to the Holy Spirit, and wills.

Elizabeth told Mary that she was blessed and commended her for believing the Lord’s words to her. Do we help people see the ways in which they are blessed? Do we encourage them in their rela onship with the Lord and build them up?

Mary carried Jesus in her womb when she visited Elizabeth. When we visit people, do we carry Jesus within us? In other words, are we in a state of grace? Do we want to do His will? Do we want to bring Him to everyone we meet? Do we want others to see Him in us?

Mary’s soul magnified the Lord. Do we ask God to make us saints, so that people may see the beauty and works of God through who we are and what we do? Do we try to impress people with who God is, or with ourselves? By our ac ons, do we try to help people focus on God, or on our favorite projects?

Mary spoke of God’s mercy to those who fear Him. By our words and ac ons, do we emphasize both God’s mercy and the need to respect and obey Him? Do we show God’s mercy—His forgiveness and generosity—to the people in our lives? Do we give an example of reverence to others by how we worship and pray?

Mary talked about God’s strength. Do we act and speak as if God didn’t exist, or do our words and behavior show our trust in Him and in His power? Do we trust God to bring good out of everything that happens? Which do we spend more me talking about—what’s wrong in the world, or the wonderful things God is doing?

Mary talked about the virtue of humility. Do we accept where God has put us in life, or are we constantly and anxiously straining to “get ahead?” Are we grateful for the personality, appearance, and gi s God has given us, or do we wish we were like someone else? Do we try to do things on our own strength, or do we ask God for help with everything? Are we open to learning and correc on, or do we act as if we already know everything we need to know, and resent it when people try to point us in a be er direc on? Are we content with being unno ced by other people, or do we try to get their a en on?

Mary talked about God filling the hungry with good things. Do we realize our need for God and hunger for Him, or act as if we were self-sufficient? Is being with God our greatest desire, or do we put other things or people before Him in our affec ons? Do we thirst for Him like He thirsts for us? Do we hunger to do God’s will more than we hunger for excitement, pleasure and admira on?

If our answers to the above ques ons show us, as in a mirror, that we aren’t as effec ve evangelizers as Mary, let’s not get discouraged. God is very pa ent with us. Also, we can be sure that He will give us all the help we need to become more effec ve missionary disciples in the future. Let’s rest in His love for us as His beloved son or daughter and look forward to the opportuni es He will provide for us to bring Jesus with us on our visits to people. Mary, pray for us, that, like you, we will proclaim the greatness of the Lord.

Yours in Christ with Mary, Father Rudolph

Lioba was born around the beginning of the eighth century in the Wessex region of England. Her bap smal name was Trhûtgeba, but she came to be known as Liobgetha, which was abbreviated to Lioba, which means “the dear one.” At an early age she went to be educated by nuns and was eventually accepted, at her request, as a full member of the religious community at Wimborne in Dorset. The two things that most impressed people at this stage of her life were her single-mindedness and her enthusiasm for books and learning.

Lioba was related to Saint Boniface, the great missionary to the German people. A er he had been sent on this mission by Pope Gregory II and consecrated a bishop in 722, she ini ated a wri en correspondence with Boniface that he responded to and that con nued for years. Then in 748, Boniface wrote to the abbess of Wimborne, Saint Te a, asking if Lioba and some other nuns could come help with the evangeliza on of Germany by founding some monasteries for women. Te a sent no less than thirty nuns, including not only Lioba but also other women who were later canonized, including Saint Thecla and Saint Walburga. Lioba was described by those who knew her in Germany as being very striking physically, with an equally a rac ve personality, including enormous warmth and kindness.

The Rule followed in all her monasteries was that of Saint Benedict. Each day was a balanced mixture of prayer, especially the public prayer of the Church, manual work in the kitchen, bakehouse, brewery or garden, and intellectual ac vity—all the nuns had to learn La n, and the scriptorium, where copies of the Bible were hand-wri en, was always busy. Lioba insisted that all the nuns take the midday rest prescribed by the Rule, saying that by loss of sleep, understanding was lost, especially in reading.

One purpose of the nuns’ community was to provide spiritual support for the monks who worked in the countryside around them. But Lioba was also a great blessing for other folks in the area. Many men and women from various walks of life came to her for help and advice.

Saint Boniface seems to have foreseen his martyrdom, and before his final mission he came to say goodbye to Lioba. He asked the monks to bury her, when her me came, next to him so that they could wait for the Resurrec on together.

A er Lioba had been abbess of Tauberbischofsheim for twenty-eight years, and was very old, she made sure that everything was in order in the monasteries under her care and re red to the monastery of Schornsheim. She went on a brief visit to her friend Blessed Hildegard, the wife of the Emperor Charlemagne. As she was leaving, she told Hildegard: “Farewell, precious part of my soul! May Christ our Creator and Redeemer grant that we may see each other without confusion of face in the day of judgment, for in this life we shall never more see each other.” Soon a er this visit, in 782, she died and was buried in the abbey church at Fulda. Saint Lioba, pray for us!

"Frequently, only silence can express my prayer.

However, this Divine Guest of the tabernacle understands all, even the silence of a child's soul filled with gra tude. When I am before the tabernacle, I can

say only one thing to Our Lord: 'My God, you know that I love you' and I feel my prayer does not re Jesus."
