Over the past several months we have been considering some of the sins against the First Commandment. I think everyone can understand the seriousness of worshipping the devil, but some mes we miss some of the other related areas. We have already spoken about some of the problems like Ouija Boards, tarot cards, palm reading, etc. Today I would like to address some other areas we may not think of immediately when considering viola ons of the First Commandment.

The first point to consider is supers on. While there is nothing inherently wrong, for instance, with going to a restaurant and breaking open the fortune cookie to get a good laugh, there is something very wrong if we put any kind of credence in what the fortune says. The same can be said of horoscopes, good luck charms, or any other form of supers on.

We have to realize that the alignment of the stars, the arrangement of tea leaves in the bo om of a cup, or the lines in the palms of your hands have nothing whatsoever to do with anything regarding the predic on of future events. If you read the horoscopes in the paper in order to get a good laugh at the vagueness, generali es, or foolishness of the nonsense contained within, there is no sin involved. However, if you read your horoscope and think there is any truth to it that applies to your life, then you have crossed the line into sin.

I think anyone with any common sense can recognize that something like a rabbit’s foot cannot bring a person any kind of luck, good or bad, by its own power. If there is something that has a spell or some other ritual prayers then it should go without saying that it has no place in the life of a Chris an person. As a side note, there are some essen al oils and some homeopathic remedies that have occult prayers and rituals done over them, so be very careful when using such remedies.

While we can all see the foolishness of carrying around a rabbit’s foot for good luck, there are coins, medallions, patches, or other items that are used for good luck. O en these are associated with some kind of god or goddess. These need to be rejected absolutely, as making use of them is a viola on of the First Commandment by calling on false gods. There are some people who are into chakras, karma, mantras and the like. These also need to be rejected as does anything that calls upon energies. To say you have a lot of energy today or you do not have any energy is fine because it is describing your state of being at the moment, but to call on energies or to try to move energies or energy fields around in your body is nothing short of demonic.

Something I have seen a lot of in the past few years is people holding their hand high in the air with only the li le finger and the index finger up. The Texas Longhorns have used this for decades as their school sign, but these days it is used as a sign of Satan, the two fingers held upright being a symbol of his horns. This is held up at concerts, when heavy metal music is played, when something immoral takes place, and even when something good happens and the person wants to give credit to the devil. Needless to say, unless you are at a Texas Longhorns game, no Chris an person should ever use this vile symbol.

What is interes ng is that people automa cally flash this symbol when they hear some kind of horrible music. They clearly recognize where the origin of this music can be found. This tells us that frequen ng concerts or buying recordings of the music played by such bands is definitely not in keeping with Chris an morality. Giving honor to the vile creature in any way, including listening to music inspired by evil, is a sin against the First Commandment.

Having said all of this, there is one other area of sin against the First Commandment we have to men on in this context: the sin of presump on. Presump on is when we know something is wrong, but we do it with the idea we can just go to confession. In other words, we are presuming on God’s mercy. This applies to any area of sin, not just sins that would violate the First Commandment. However, beyond having to confess whatever sin we commi ed, if it was done with the idea we could just go to confession, we also have to confess having commi ed the sin of presump on. Presump on is a sin that violates the First Commandment because it is directly in opposi on to the love of God.

We were created to glorify God or, as the Bal more Catechism puts it, we were created to know, love, and serve God in this life so we could be with Him forever in the next life. This being the case, we have to make God our top priority and remove from our lives anything that gravitates against this. In our rela vis c society we have decided that somehow each of us can be our own arbiter of truth. In other words, we do not have to pay a en on to what Scripture says or what the Church teaches, we can do whatever we want. This violates our own dignity, but it also steers us away from serving God in love and truth. We need to choose to conform our lives to God and to reject anything that leads us away from God, even if we are a racted to it or we personally like it. If it offends God, get rid of it and offer it to God as a sacrifice.

The First Commandment is the most important Commandment of the ten, but it is o en the one we think of least. It is me we give it the recogni on it deserves and strive to live in truth and love as revealed by God.

Andrew was born in Florence, Italy in 1302, on the feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle, a er whom he was accordingly named. As a youth he led a very self-indulgent and sinful life but was eventually converted through the efforts of his mother. One way she helped him to see the error of his ways was by telling him about a dream she had before he was born, in which she gave birth to a wolf, which was changed into a lamb a er running into a church. Andrew made this dream come true the very next day by going into a Carmelite church and, a er praying long and hard, resolving to join the Carmelite Order. He became a friar and was ordained priest in 1328. His noble family wanted to make a big produc on out of his first Mass; to escape this he went to a small convent, where he said his first Mass in peace and secrecy. A er several years spent preaching and then studying in foreign universi es, Andrew was elected prior of his convent in Florence. He became known for his great austerity of life and ability to convert hardened sinners. In 1349, Andrew was chosen bishop of Fiesole. He tried to escape this role by hiding in a Carthusian convent, where he was discovered a er his hiding place was revealed by a small child. A er his consecra on as bishop, Andrew increased his personal austeri es; for example, he slept on the floor on a bed of vine branches. His holiness had prac cal outcomes too, for example in his charity to the poor—o en carried out in secret—and his gi for making peace between warring fac ons in the city. Andrew got sick while singing Christmas Mass in 1372 and died soon a er, on the Feast of the Epiphany. He was buried in the Carmelite church in Florence. Andrew was immediately proclaimed a saint by popular acclama on even though his formal canoniza on did not take place un l 1629. Saint Andrew Corsini, pray for us! Am s ll looking forward to rest of the Christmas Fes ve Liturgies, while holding all of you in St Raphael’s very close to my heart as I offer Mass on these great Solemni es.

I wish to express my deep gra tude for your generous contribu ons and support towards ge ng a vehicle for my ministry here in St. Paul Parish in Walewale. I received your generous dona on of $9,446.35 and along with other dona ons I received, I have started looking for a car to purchase.

I am very grateful! I know all of you made sacrifices towards this course. I am most indebted to Fr Rudolph and Fr Al er for trus ng in your goodwill in appealing to you on my behalf. May God in His great providence, according to His own will and promise, replenish and fill you in your deepest desires and needs.

When I find a decent car, preferably an SUV because of the nature of our roads here, I will let you know and together, we can thank God for his graciousness.

My deepest desire and prayer now is that, may it please God that in the not too distant future, I will be able to come to Crystal and to St Raphael’s to offer Mass for and with you all. I pray earnestly for this daily and cannot imagine the deep joy of that moment.

I hold each one of you dear and pray for you and your inten ons. God is faithful and His promises are true as He shows us this Christmas by giving us His Only Bego en Son, Our Saviour, who is Christ the Lord!

May the Peace and Joy of this Christmas be yours this Season and always!
