BAKER’S BITS NEW DIRECTOR OF MUSIC: MARK PACOE Welcome to Mark who has begun full-time at the parish on June 1. Since September, Mark has been assisting with scheduling and laying basic

groundwork for a comprehensive music ministry parish-wide. Mark's experience and accomplishments as a church musician and concert musician have been recognized locally, nationally and internationally. Through Mark's pastoral leadership, all musical elements of the music ministry program will be supported and organized with Dean Fredrickson, Music Assistant, all of the music ministers who are part of the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini community, the Slovak community at St. John, and all who will become part of a new English choir in residence at 66th and 1st. Let's embrace Mark in this pastoral calling in all of the exciting ideas and developments to come. More information will be forthcoming in the next weeks about joining the new choir at St. John. The Novena of masses begins today and continues for 9 days. BOOK FAIR The Daughters of St. Paul, Catholic Sisters who are missioned in New York City at the Pauline Book & Media Center at 64 West 38th Street, will hold a book fair this weekend, June 18–19 after all the Masses. The Sisters will have a selection of religious books, music CDs, and DVDs. This will be a good opportunity to obtain spiritual materials for yourself, your family and friends to deepen your knowledge of the Catholic faith. HOLY YEAR SLOVAK FAITH AND HERITAGE TOUR IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHO-DIUS, September 30th to October 11th 2016. Fr. Baker will lead a Holy Year of Mercy tour to Slovakia, visiting Bratislava, Košice and other important cities and sites in Slovakia. In addition to Slovakia, the tour will also visit Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. The tour will include an English speaking guide in Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar occurs this week. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! SLOVAK PILGRIMAGE IN WEST HAVERSTRAW, NY The St. Stephen Society, Branch 716, FCSU is inviting all their members and friends to attend the annual Slovak Pilgrimage at the Marian Shrine on Sunday, August 14, 2016. An outdoor Mass will be celebrated at 11 A.M. followed by lunch at 12:30. Priests will be available for Confession before Mass. The day will conclude at 2:30 with the recitation of the Rosary along Rosary Way. Účastníci navštívia Bratislavu, Košice a iné dôležité mestá a historické i cirkevné miesta na Slovensku. Zájazd navštívi aj Viedeň a Budapešť. An-glicky hovoriaci sprievodca bude sprevádzať zájazd po-čas celého pobytu v Európe. Dúfame, že aj toto uľahčí slovenským veriacim prísť do kostola aj z väčších vzdialeností, aktívne sa zapojiť do života farnosti a podporiť náš kostol. SLÁVNOSŤ NARODENIA SV. JÁNA KRSTITEĽA 24. júna je Slávnosť Sv. Jána Krstiteľa. Ján Krstiteľ bol synom Zachariáša a Alžbety. Zachariáš bol kňazom v jeruzalemskom chráme. Práve prinášal obetu Bohu, keď sa mu zjavil anjel Gabriel a zvestoval mu, že sa mu narodí syn. Keďže Zachariáš aj Alžbeta boli vo vysokom veku, Zachariáš neuveril. Hneď nato onemel. Prehovoril až potom, ako rozhodol, že jeho syn sa bude volať Ján. Ján žil na púšti v samote, živil sa lesným medom a korienkami rastlín a nosil oblek z ťavej kože. Keď mal 30 rokov opustil púšť, aby na brehu rieky Jordán hlásal príchod Mesiáša, vyzýval na pokánie a krstil ľudí. Veľa ľudí išlo za ním. Prišiel aj Ježiš. Ján v ňom rozpoznal Spasiteľa. Ježiš po krste šiel hlásať radostnú zvesť do Galiley. Ján zostal pri Jordáne. Pretože napomínal vtedajšieho kráľa Herodesa pre jeho nemravný a hriešny život, Herodes ho dal uväzniť a neskôr na žiadosť jeho nezákonnej manželky Herodiady a jej dcéry Salome vo väzení sťať. Ján Krstiteľ vystupuje ako posledný starozá-konný prorok, predchodca Mesiáša. Sám Kristus sa o ňom vyjadril ako o najväčšom medzi narodenými zo ženy. Je to jedna z najväčších postáv dejín spásy. Na Slovensku je veľa ľudových zvykov okolo sviatku sv. Jána. V deň sv. Jána Krstiteľa je letný slnovrat a preto s týmto sviatkom je spojené množstvo ľudových zvykov, ktoré sa udržali na niektorých miestach dodnes. Tradova-lo sa, že na Jána majú najväčšiu moc všetky živly – zem, voda i oheň. Preto sa zvykli počas najkratšej noci roka, páliť jánske ohne a vatry. Mládež, ženy aj muži na svätého Jána tancovali a spievali okolo vatier, často ich aj preskakovali. Sv. Ján Krstiteľ je patrón kožušníkov, remenárov a pastierov. Práve pastieri tento deň považovali za svoj sviatok, oslavovali ho ohňami a bohatou hostinou. Na Jána sa nesmelo sadiť ani prať. Šťastie mal človek, ktorý chytil svätojánsku mušku a nosil ju pri sebe. Poučenie: Povera je vybočenie kultu, ktorý vzdávame pravému Bohu. Prejavuje sa najmä v modloslužbe, ako aj v rozličných formách veštenia a mágie. (Katechizmus katolíckej Cirkvi, 2138)
