BUILD THE BLOCK The NYPD officers serving your community in-vite you to a discussion of the public safety chal-lenges in our neighborhood. With neighbor-hood policing, the Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) and the Steady Sector Officers who work with them have been given more time and opportunity to collaborate with resi-dents in identifying and solving local quality of life conditions and crime concerns. This is a new way of doing business for the NYPD and they need your help to make it work. They want to hear from a broad range of voices about what it will take to make all the residents of our neighborhood feel safe and secure. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 24th at the SSG Michael Ollis VFW Post, 575 Mill Road. Doors open at 6:30 PM for refreshments and the meeting starts at 7:00 PM. 6
Pack/Troop 88 would like to thank all those who contrib-uted to the “Drive for 5”. The ten boxes of items have been delivered to the Staten Island Giving Circle and will be distributed to children in
need here on Staten Island. Your support is greatly appreciated.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday during Lent, Stations of the Cross will be conducted after the 12 Noon Mass fol-lowed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. The Teen Club will conduct the Living Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 3rd Friday, April 10th at 8:00 PM in the Church.
ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older.
FASTING Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are permit-ted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid food between meals is not permitted. There is a serious obliga-tion to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and ab-stinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause of excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence. During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed time of fasting and generosity to local, national and worldwide programs of sharing.

ST. ANTHONY NOVENA St. Anthony of Padua is a favorite saint of many people. Called the “Wonder Worker” because of the many miracles
with which God has favored him, St. Anthony has traditionally been the refuge of all who have lost things, whether temporal or spiritual. If you want to express your devotion to St. Antho-ny, you can make a novena which will begin on Tuesday, March 17th after the morning Masses (8:30 and 12 Noon). The novena will be said each Tuesday until June 9th.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
THE CORONA VIRUS AND LENT The global epidemic of the Corona Virus has drawn the attention and concern of everyone across the globe. From China where it started then to South Korea, Italy, Iran and here in the United States, lives have been lost. Others have been infected and quarantined. All of us have become extremely alert to the danger of contagion. It’s not a good idea to blame one particular nation for the spread of the epidemic. The important thing now is not to cast stones but to join together and fight the disease and to seek an antidote. In this regard, I read recently in the Brooklyn Diocesan newspaper, The Tablet, an article by the Bish-op Nicholas DiMarzio. The bishop had a very good message. He wrote about another time in the world when there was a global epidemic known as the “Spanish Flu.” This occurred approximately between the years 1918 to 1919. 600,000 people died here in the United States alone from that flu. It was a terrible ca-lamity. Bishop DiMarzio related that every year a man would come and visit his grandmother Angelina in Newark where he grew up. One day, the future bishop asked his grandma who this man was and why he came to see her. The grandmother explained that during the flu epidemic of 1918, many people died in the tenements in Newark where they lived. Among those who died were both this boy’s parents. He was an or-phan. As it turned out, the bishop’s grandmother was the only one who would prepare the bodies of the flu victims for burial. She performed this service for this man’s parents, and he never forgot her love and devo-tion despite the risk of contracting the disease herself. His grandma Angelina truly made a great sacrifice and gave of herself! We are now in the season of Lent. Traditionally, the Church recommends prayer, sacrifice and giving during this time. We make little sacrifices to remind ourselves of the great sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross. Our prayers should help us to focus more on our neighbor and less on this troublesome thing known as the “Self.” I suppose the people who made the greatest sacrifices for others were the saints. Where we have trouble giving up cookies, potato chips and candy bars, the saints were willing to risk their lives for their neighbor. For instance, Saint Damian Deveuster was a Belgian priest of the Nineteenth Century who heroi-cally ministered to the lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Eventually, he died of leprosy himself. Then of course, there is our own parish patron, Saint Charles Borromeo. When a terrible plague dev-astated the city of Milan in 1576, it was Saint Charles himself, the Archbishop, who ministered to the sick and suffering with his own hands. The civil authorities fled from the city, but Saint Charles stayed and helped many people. There are many other good examples that we know of people who thought less about their own com-fort and convenience and served others. There is a lesson here for all of us during lent and for that matter, at all times of the year. The world is today a smaller place-some say a “Global Village.” We are all connected. May we stir ourselves to greater concern for our neighbor. Pope Francis reminds us in his Lenten Letter this year: “May we not let this time of grace pass in vain in the illusion that we can control the times and means of our conversion to Him.” Pray this Lent for all the sick and especially for the victims of the Corona Virus. Let us “connect” with them at least spiritual-ly by our prayers and compassion! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
