“And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it
came and stopped over the place where the child was…they opened their
treasures and did him homage.” –Matthew 2
Jesus, receiver of the Magi and their gifts, helps us
follow the light in the midst of our dark world.
Fix our eyes and hearts on your light, that we might be
bearers of that light to all those who
walk in the dark. Amen.
“God’s flock is in your midst; give it a shepherd’s care” ( 1 Peter 5:2)
In last week’s diocesan newspaper, The Tablet, it was officially announced that in June, Msgr. Kevin Noone, the pastor of Our Lady of the Angels in Bay Ridge, will relinquish his pastoral duties to reside with us at St Mel’s. Msgr. Noone is a cherished friend and mentor. He has been a constant support and influence in my life. Prior to my ordination in 1992 he supervised me for a summer at St. Gabriel’s in East Elmhurst. When I returned to the Diocese in 1998 after doing post-ordination studies in Rome I was assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Bensonhurst where he was my pastor. And when I assumed the pastoral responsibility of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Williamsburg he supported my ministry in his role as Episcopal Vicar of Brooklyn. Father Barozzi also had the fortune of living and working with Msgr. Noone when they were both assigned to the parish of St. Joseph’s in Astoria. While a priest who retires does not “stop being a priest”, he nonetheless
is afforded the status of “senior priest” to allow him the freedom to enjoy his later years of life without the responsibility of a parochial assignment. Msgr. Noone’s presence among us will primarily be that of a resident priest. As he settles into his new status of life he may offer us some pastoral service but there is no obligation or expectation. I am happy that our parish will be blessed by another priestly presence and that Father Barozzi and I will have the blessing of reuniting with a brother and friend. We continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood. Since arriving at St. Mel’s I have met several potential candidates. The ground here is fertile. We need to cultivate it together with our support, encouragement and care. If our efforts remain rooted in faith and prayer, I am convinced that we will yield a bountiful harvest for the future of the Church. Father Fonti
A Prayer for Vocations
God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ.
We ask that You inspire young people whom You call to
the priesthood and consecrated life to courageously follow Your will.
Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted,
and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen

An Annual Memorial Candle can brighten your intentions all year long.
Purchasing an Annual Memorial Candle to Honor a loved one or a special
intention is a wonderful way to express our sentiments. When we go,
leaving the burning candle behind, we are reminded that our prayers and
intentions burn before the Lord unceasingly.
You can have a perpetual memorial for about .50 cents per day. The
annual offering for each candle is $200, which supports our parish.
If you would like to reserve a memorial candle, please fill out the form
below and return it along with payment to the Rectory. For more
questions, please contact the office at (718) 886-0201.

“Devotion to Mary is not spiritual etiquette; it is a requirement of the Christian life. Looking to
the Mother, we are asked to leave behind all sorts of useless baggage and to rediscover what
really matters. The gift of the Mother, the gift of every mother and every woman, is most precious
for the Church, for she too is mother and woman. While a man often abstracts, affirms and
imposes ideas, a woman, a mother, knows how to “keep”, to put things together in her heart, to
give life. If our faith is not to be reduced merely to an idea or a doctrine, all of us need a
mother’s heart, one which knows how to keep the tender love of God and to feel the heartbeat of
all around us. May the Mother, God’s finest human creation, guard and keep this year, and bring
the peace of her Son to our hearts and to our world.”
- Pope Francis
Inspire them through prayer
to live each day the mystery of
Your dying and rising.
In time of weakness send them
Your Spirit,
and help them to praise Your heavenly Father
and pray for poor sinners.
By the same Holy Spirit,
put Your word on their lips
and Your love in their hearts,
to bring good news to the poor
and healing to the brokenhearted.
And may the gift of Mary,
Your mother,
to the disciple whom You loved,
be Your gift to every priest.
Grant that she who formed You in her human
image,
may form them in Your Divine image,
by the power of Your Spirit,
to the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
Lord Jesus, You have chosen Your priests
from among us
and sent them out to proclaim
Your word
and to act in Your name.
For so great a gift to Your Church,
we give You praise and thanksgiving.
We ask You to fill them with the fire of Your
love,
that their ministry may reveal Your presence
in the Church.
Since they are earthen vessels,
we pray that Your power shine out through
their weakness.
In their afflictions let them never be crushed;
in their doubts never despair;
in temptation never be destroyed;
in persecution never abandoned.
