“Do not lose peace… I am the way,

the truth and the life”

One of the most important experiences of Jesuit formation is, no doubt, the Spiritual Exercises. For a month, a little more in my case, and not because of my holiness, we Jesuits prepare ourselves to listen to the invitations of the Lord and ask for the gift of finding His invitation in our lives. Hence, we walk under the banner of the Cross. “Do not lose peace… I am the way, the truth and the life” were, and still are, words that rang powerfully during those days. Opening one’s heart, allowing yourself to be transformed, offering your life for building the Kingdom are experiences that might shake anyone. They can fill you with joy, but at the same time, with uncertainty. In that context, listening to Jesus saying, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” was like a balm that soothed all my fears and anxieties. All my life, with its lights and shadows, I found myself in Him. My life found a place in the very source of life.

Eleven years after that early formational experience, the words of the Gospel continue to shake me and remind me that we are not alone; we walk by His side toward true life. Today’s liturgy surprises me by uniting John’s Gospel to the reading regarding the institution of Deacons in the Acts of the Apostles. This past year I have had the gift of serving as a Dea-con for the Parish’s Hispanic community. Being of service to others, setting my love more in deeds than in words, and allow-ing myself to be shaped by so many people, has been a deep experience of God’s love and the care He has for each one of us. From this community, I have experienced God giving life, and it has increased my desire to live in his truth.

In the readings, we hear in Acts that the disciples are wor-ried because the daily charitable service has not been tended to; in the Gospel we learn that Thomas does not know what way he needs to take, while Phillip still does not fully under-stand who Jesus is. I have lived all these experiences, and we have lived them together in community. Sometimes, we do not know how to discern the Lord’s invitations to us, nor how to actualize our love for Him and for our brothers and sisters. Like the disciples, we are restless, disoriented, and, for a while, lacking in faith. Ironically, perhaps our only clarity is that we do not know how to follow Jesus and are scared about trivial concerns that take away our peace. Our temptation could be to struggle alone, falling into hopelessness. However, Jesus enters telling us: “do not lose peace. If you believe in God, believe also in me.” He calls us to trust Him, and thereby, to soothe our anxieties and to recover our path. Only in Him, and from Him, we can confidently repeat: O Lord, you are my way, my truth and my life.

A Faith That Does Justice, with Fr. Peter Gyves, S.J., is an ecumenical program that seeks to raise consciousness about social issues that affect the most vulnerable among us and offer opportunities to live faith with others less fortunate than ourselves. We offer two programs: small group meetings that ex-plore the faith dimension of working for social justice; and larger meetings with invited speakers who will dis-cuss timely social issues that affect many in our city and country. Bible Study with Marsha Mirkin: The Power of RelationshipMay 27th|10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.Garden Level, Parish OfficeMarsha Mirkin will once again lead us in studying the Hebrew scriptures. We will deal with many important questions such as the following: what might the journey from slavery in Egypt to the cove-nant at Mt. Sinai and beyond teach us about our own rela-tionship with ourselves, family, community, and God, as well as how these relationships intertwine with each other; what messages might this biblical journey give us about spiritual community and the values of that community; what might we learn from the human beings who aspire to live their lives as people made in God’s image and in relationship with God while also having very human flaws; and what happens when we stand at Sinai? Please join us along with Moses and Miriam as we gather on the shore of the Sea of Reeds (Red Sea), shortly after the exodus from Egypt, and undertake the emotional and holy journey toward and beyond Sinai.

Book Discussion Sunday, May 21st | 11:15 a.m.Parish OfficeIn a review of Thirteen Ways of Look-

ing by Colum McCann, Emily Holman asks "Just how much does one’s way of looking determine what one sees? We all know that perception isn’t merely a mat-ter of the angle from which you view a table or a tree: as Sartre emphasized, it has much more to do with imagination. How we look doesn’t just shape what we see; it creates what we see. This fact poses for writers a great, and greatly difficult, task: that of generat-ing new ways of seeing.” By the end of Colum McCann’s collection of stories, a new way of seeing, a shift in per-spective has taken place-- nothing radical, but rather the sort of altered vision that comes to each of us in our lives as we gather information and experience and look back at what has been. Please join the discussion of this intrigu-ing and thought-provoking book on May 21st.
