Dear Parishioners,In these early days of our Lenten journey, we wonder what

lies ahead and what God might be seeking to reveal to us in this time of renewal. How might God be calling us to some-thing new?

I was excited to find the edges of something new in the first of the Universal Apostolic Preferences recently shared with the Society of Jesus and the Ignatian family. We are invited "To show the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and dis-cernment". At first glance, this might not seem like something new at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish.

Through the years, many parishioners have traveled the Spir-itual Exercises and come to deeper encounter with one anoth-er and with God. They go forth with discerning hearts, seeking places to accompany others and finding ways to be more atten-tive to God's dream for peace, reconciliation and justice in the world. The identity and mission of our parish has always been rooted and grounded in Ignatian spirituality. So, how might God be calling us to something new?

What struck me as new in the first Apostolic Preference was the urgent need to embrace the "diverse social contexts of today's world". The document proclaims: "We resolve to collaborate with the Church in experiencing secular society as a sign of the times that affords us the opportunity to renew our presence in the heart of human history". This feels to me like a welcome reframing of how we might choose to view the diversity of "secular society". The institution of the Church has often engaged in open confrontation with secular society, lamenting the growing numbers of those (often young adults) who might describe themselves as "unaffiliated" yet seeking a path to God. It might surprise you to learn that these seekers are seeking out the Spiritual Exercises in growing numbers, and coming to our parish hungering for a way to grapple with the questions and signs of our times.

Are we being called to move forward into new spaces of freedom and discernment that bring opportunity for renew-al in our troubled times? It has been my experience over the last ten years that these "free spaces" exist on the margins where "churched" and "unchurched "come together to deepen their relationship with God. In these challenging times, where one can feel weary of scandal and obstacles to change in the Church, the Spiritual Exercises bring together companions who desire to listen to God's voice within and to learn the ways to discern God's presence in their lived experience. At the end of the Spiritual Exercises journey, retreatants are often sur-prised how their adventure on their personal pathway to God has led them to a desire for faith community. Their experience contributes to our wider understanding of what loving eccle-

CRS Rice Bowl 2019 | Second Week of Lent - Encounter AnnetSince her parents’ deaths 4 years ago, 16-year-old Annet has been caring for her three siblings: Gladys, 6, Irene, 8 and Emman-uel, 10. Ongoing violence in their home country, South Sudan, forced Annet to take her siblings and flee south to neighboring Uganda. Now they live in Bidi Bidi, one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. While Annet is happy to be away from the violence, life in Bidi Bidi is hard—especially for a young woman trying to raise her siblings. That’s why CRS is building houses for families like Annet’s. Annet was given her own plot of land to plant on so she will be able to continue providing for her siblings. “My hope is to raise my siblings,” she says. “And I know I can do it with the help of CRS.”

CRS Rice Bowls are on the Outreach table and in the Lannon Chapel.
