Dear ParishionersBesides gold, frankincense and myrrh, was

there perhaps a fourth gift? Our tradition has easily focused on these three rich-

ly symbolic gifts: gold, a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense, a symbol of being a royal priest, and myrrh, an embalming oil that symbolizes suffering and death. Our tradition then infers from these three gifts that there were three magi. In fact, in the West since the 8th century, we have even given these three magi names: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Matthew, how-ever, never actually gives us the number of Magi. More-over, this proposed fourth gift is not terribly explicit.

As Thomas H. Troeger, retired Yale Divinity professor and noted author points out, this fourth gift may be found in Matthew’s use of the Greek word “proskyneo” – “do him homage.” Matthew uses it three times in the Gospel passage we hear today. The third time it is used is when the magi enter the house and see the child with Mary: “they prostrated themselves and did him homage”[Mt 2:11]. It is only after this act of profound humility that

the magi then present their valuable and precious gifts. This order of actions, homage first and gifts sec-

ond, Troeger argues, is quite significant, particularly since “gift giving can be a way of controlling others.”

As a way to understand what he may mean, we might consider the obligation we often feel when given a gift. Don’t we almost immediately want to give a gift in re-turn or at least to be sure to give an appropriate thank you? It is subtle, but there is often an imbalance, an in-equality set up when giving a gift, even when given with the best of charitable intentions. Sometimes the giv-er wants to know exactly what you’ve done with their gift. It is therefore not really a free gift. There is no danger of that here in Matthew’s gospel however. The magi surrender themselves completely before this child and only then do they provide their gifts. Cleverly, Tro-eger suggests, “the magi’s fourth gift, paying homage to Christ, prostrating themselves in worship, is in fact their first gift. “ He then pointedly asks us: “What is ours?”

In Christ’s Peace, Fr. Joe

Sunday, January 15th.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!So many parishioners contributed their time and talent to make our Christmas Masses truly memorable. Thanks to Eric Haydel’s artful

design and with the help of our Community Connections volunteers our Church looked perfectly stunning. The Children’s Pageant under

the direction of Tracy Magee certainly brought the Gospel story of Christ’s birth to life for us at our 6PM Mass. It was inspiring to see so many young people participate from the young lectors and

children’s choir to the budding young thespians. The dancers at the masses, of course, added a special touch. Our choir and musicians under the direction of Michael Burgo, assisted by Matt Anderson, were sublime. Many thanks also to our liturgy coordinators, lectors

and eucharistic ministers. And much thanks to all of YOU for your participation and for your

Christmas gift of support for our parish.

You are invited to a discussion of Spiritual Ecology: A Guide to Reconnecting with Nature by Jim Nollman. One reviewer notes "Spiritual Ecology will shock, provoke, and reawaken all readers to the marvels of our natural world. Written in the philosophical tradition of ecologists John Muir, Rachel Carson, and Henry David Thoreau, poetic and prophetic, this book helps us to see our earth better: through the soul of our living planet.” Come to the parish office and learn, as Pope Francis advises us, to care for our common home.

Book Discussion

It is with some sadness, but more so with great ap-preciation that we announce the departure of Michelle Abadia from our roster of cantors. Michelle’s voice has brought peace, joy and consolation to so many of us; we will miss her song leading at our weekend liturgies. Michelle has decided to explore new musical oppor-tunities that will preclude her from continuing at St. Ignatius on a regular basis, but we look forward to her participation in special ways going forward. We send our prayers and best wishes for her future success, and so we will take the opportunity to celebrate with her after the Noon Liturgy on Sunday January 15th downstairs in the Friary Room. Please join us in expressing our gratitude for her many years of ministry at our parish.
