(Continued on page 4)

Dear Parishioners of St. Ignatius of Loyola:The Society of Jesus is coming up on an annual remem-

brance of six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter who were killed at the University of Central America in San Salva-dor, El Salvador. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that horrific night. El Salvador was in a very violent civil war. The government was very right wing and the poor were considered rebels and suffered greatly. Gradually the priests throughout the country started speaking up against the injustices by pro-moting the Gospel of Jesus Christ in very loud voices. They were taking to hear the words of St. James “not hearers only, but do-ers of the Word.” For their solidarity with the poor, one by one they were executed by the army. The earliest known Jesuit to be killed was Fr. Rutilio Grande, SJ in 1977. Others followed including St. Oscar Romero, then Archbishop of San Salvador. Within the same year, 1980, four Church women were brutally murdered: three Sisters and a lay volunteer: Jean Donovan, Sr. Maura Clarke, MM, Sr. Ita Ford, MM, Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU. The civil war continued with many deaths until November 16, 1989 when the Atlacatl Battalion, trained at the School of the Americas in Ft. Benning, Georgia, en-tered the Jesuit Community at the University to kill Fr. Ignacio Ellacuria, SJ, the president of the university. The Battalion was told to leave no witnesses, so they killed the other five Jesuits who were home that night. In a room at the other end of the Jesuit Community, the housekeeper Elba Ramos and her daughter Celina Ramos were discovered and also killed. They had stayed there to be safe since their neigh-borhood was under attack.

Attempts were made to find the people who made the de-cision to carry out this attack. After a few years some generals and other military were arrested and tried but the judges in El Salvador dismissed the case and most went free. Two were sentenced to prison but released a year later when the gov-ernment issued an Amnesty. Again with the passage of time, a former General of that Arena Party was found living here in Somerville, MA. Colonel Inocente Orlando Montano en-tered the United States with forged documentation. Eventually he was brought to trial here in Boston. He was imprisoned for immigration violations but is now extradited to the High Courts in Spain for a trial regarding the murders of the Jesuits in El Salvador. Five of the six Jesuits murdered were Spanish citizens who were on mission to the University in El Salvador. The case was re-opened in 2017 but still sits incomplete.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because the struggle for

justice continues and this anniversary is an appropriate time to remind us all of the call to follow the Gospel to seek peace, achieve justice and help all women and men live in community and solidarity with each other and God.

On November 16th, three of us will be joining two thou-sand representatives from Jesuit schools and others at the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, DC. For me it is my twenty-second time. It is an annual event that started at the gates of Ft. Benning in Columbus, Georgia and joined with the SOA, School of the Americas protest. That is the United States tax-payer supported school that trains many soldiers from other countries in the tactics of violent warfare. Several of the Salvadoran soldiers involved in the Je-suit murders were trained in this school at Ft. Benning, Geor-gia. We moved to Washington in order to be able to advocate in Congress for the various causes that demand justice.

On our lawn are crosses representing the Martyrs. A prayer for them is appropriate as would be a prayer for personal strength to lift up our voices for justice. The troubles con-tinue in El Salvador and we have many troubles here a well. Let us pray for justice, equality and reverence for a just com-munity.

Let us be inspired by Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, superior gen-eral of the Jesuit Order, who wrote “we are all stewards of planet Earth – a planet to heal. Our responsibility to tend its wounds is in proportion to the talents God has given us. It is the human heart which stands first in need of healing.”

Let us also follow the words of St. James and “be not hear-ers only, but do-ers of the Word.”

In peace and justice,Fr. Don MacMillan, S.J.

Don MacMillan, S.J.

Racial Justice CommitteeBryan Massingale as quoted in National Catholic Reporter 2017“The deepest reason why I have chosen to be a Catholic ethicist who fo-cuses on racial issues stems from my understanding of racism. Although it can be seen as a political issue, sociological phenomenon or cultural divide, it’s Martin Luther King’s view of racism as a “soul sickness” that resonates most deeply. If racism is a soul sickness then we need to pro-vide a remedy that can reach the inner reaches of the human spirit.”
