This coming Wednesday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our mass times will be the same as in years past: 6:30pm (Tuesday vigil – English); 8:30am (English); 12:00pm (Italian / English); 6:30pm (Spanish / English).

This is a very holy day in our liturgical calendar where we give thanks to God for the gift of our Mother Mary. She took care of her son, Jesus, while on earth, and takes care of us now from heaven! Let's increase our conversation with her, asking her to teach us to imitate the virtues she models and for her intercession for all of our spiritual and material needs. I know it is not easy to make it to mass during the week if you are working full-time, but I invite you to plan ahead, make a sacrifice, and make it to mass this Wednesday, if not at Mt. Carmel, at another parish close to your place of work!

P.S. Below is some information about the origin and meaning of the Feast Day.

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven (often shortened to the Assumption) is, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy, as well as parts of Anglicanism, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.

The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". This doctrine was dogmatically de-fined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility.[5] While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe

in the Dormition of the Theotokos, whether Mary had a physical

death has not been dogmatically defined. In Munificentissimus De-

us (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as

scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory".

The New Testament contains no explicit narrative about the death or Dormition, nor of the Assumption of Mary, but several scriptural passages have been theologically interpreted to describe

the ultimate fate in this and the afterworld of the Mother of Jesus.

In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on 15 August. In many countries, the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman

Catholic Church.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

RINFORZATI DAL PANE DELLA VITA

Siamo noi a cercare Dio o e lui a cercare noi? Ancora prima che noi cominciamo a cercarlo consapevolmente, egli ci attira a sé, come un innamorato, tramite Cristo. La reazione giusta da parte nostra è di essere pienamente disposti ad ascoltare e ad imparare: “Chiunque ha udito il Padre e ha imparato da lui, viene a me”. Ciò significa seguire Cristo, poiché “solo colui che viene da Dio ha visto il Padre” e quindi solo lui può conoscere perfettamente la volontà del Padre e rivelarla. La vita eterna che noi tutti desideriamo dipende dalla fede in Cristo, da una fiducia e da un impegno costanti, che faranno cominciare la vita-risurrezione qui ed ora, garantendo la risurrezione dei corpi alla vita immortale. In attesa, i fedeli si nutrono del suo Corpo e del suo Sangue nella santa Eucaristia, costituendo a poco a poco in loro stessi una “riserva” di vita immortale. Se Elia o gli Ebrei dell’Esodo mangiarono del pane prezioso, noi mangiamo qualcosa di molto più prezioso: “Il pane che

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic commu-nities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were gen-teel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of fam-ily and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British as-sault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocat-ed in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a mu-seum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States.

FORTALECIDOS POR EL PAN DE VIDA Hoy retomamos el discurso sobre el “Pan de Vida” del Evangelio según san Juan que comenzó hace dos semanas. Juan alude a los ancestros de los judíos que comieron el maná en el desierto. Hoy pensaríamos sobre todo en el pueblo de Israel caminando por el desierto, pero los judíos fieles también conocían el relato de Elías que escuchamos hoy. Elías comió y bebió en el desierto, y con la fuerza de aquel alimento, el ángel del Señor lo envió en su viaje de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches (la cifra bíblica que simboliza un tiempo de preparación). De la misma manera que el alimento que recibió Elías en el desierto, Jesús le dice a su público que él es pan para la vida del mundo. Es muy importante que sigamos escuchando a Jesús después de su promesa de vida eterna, sin duda es una promesa maravillosa, pero esta “recompensa” no es la única razón para darnos un festín con el Pan de Vida. También vamos a la mesa con el fin de recibir fuerzas para el camino de la misión, de manera que el mundo entero pueda tener vida en la plenitud de Cristo. Si hemos comido el pan de vida, estamos obligados a servir a todos.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1973 Juan A. Espinosa escribió la canción “Santa María del Camino” con la cual invita a la Madre de Dios a caminar con sus hermanos y hermanas en la fe. La can-ción reta al creyente a caminar a pesar de lo difícil que puede ser y a luchar por los cambios que sólo el Reino de Dios puede realizar. En todo esto María es invitada a caminar con el creyente. En esta semana recordamos la Asunción de María al cielo, y lo hacemos reconociendo que además de ser Ma-dre de Dios y madre nuestra, ella también es nuestra her-mana y compañera en el camino de la fe. Ella ha llegado a la meta de nuestra peregrinación y lo ha hecho en cuer-po y alma por un privilegio singular. Nosotros también lo haremos en los últimos días cuando nuestro cuerpo resucite para unirse con nuestra alma. Es en vista de los últimos tiempos que invitamos a María a descender de sus altares, regresando del cielo una y otra vez para caminar con sus hermanas y herma-nos, en la fe, que tanto necesitan su ejemplo y apoyo.
