From the Desk of Father José Félix Ortega

When it comes to movies and actors, I confess my complete ignorance and lack of personal interest. Therefore, obviously, I didn’t watch the Academy Oscar’s ceremony last Sunday, but someone sent me a small clip when one of the singers, in accepting her award, said: “I have worked hard for a long time and it’s not about winning. What it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion: it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down and get beaten up, but how many times you stand up, and are brave and you keep on going.”

In a few days we are starting Lent with the ceremony for Ash Wednesday. We are reminded that we can always come back to God’s mercy, it is about not giving up. It doesn’t matter how many times we fall, sin and leave the Father’s house like the prodigal son, but how many times we stand up again, and are brave to come back and accept His love and mercy for each one of us. Our prize is not a golden statue, but something bigger that lasts forever.

Lent is not about giving up, but about accepting God’s love one more time… and, in doing so, we undoubtedly end giving up a few things. As we embark on this Lenten journey, count on my prayers.

    God bless, Father José Félix

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading — We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:54-59). Gospel — A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People cus-tomarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a re-minder of God’s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Chris-tians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and “clear the air” by asking for un-derstanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repent-ance may be a blessing on your Lent.

(Salmo 92 [91]).
