Call To Lament

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?3 My tears have been my food day and night,while people say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul:how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty Onewith shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.

Psalm 42:1-5

Lord from sorrows deep I callWhen my hope is shakenTorn and ruined from the fallHear my desperationFor so long I’ve pled and prayed“God come to my rescue”Even so the thorn remains Still my heart will praise you

Storms within my troubled soulQuestions without answersOn my faith these billows rollGod be now my shelterWhy are you cast down my soul?Hope in him who saves youWhen the fires have all grown cold Cause this heart to praise you

Should my life be torn from meEvery worldly pleasureWhen all I possess is griefGod be then my treasureBe my vision in the nightBe my hope and refuge‘Til my faith is turned to sight Lord my heart will praise you

Oh my soul put your hope in GodMy help my rock I will praise himSing oh sing through the raging stormYou’re still my God my salvation

Oh my soul put your hope in GodMy help my rock I will praise himSing oh sing through the raging stormYou’re still my God my salvation

12 ‘Even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’13 Rend your heart and not your garments.Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

Call To Confession

Merciful God,our maker and our judge,we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed:we have not loved you with our whole heart,we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves:we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.Father, forgive us.Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life;through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession

Joel 2:12-13

The Apostle Paul writes:

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

Jesus said:

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ,God’s only Son, our Lord,who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,born of the Virgin Mary,suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died, and was buried;he descended to the dead.On the third day he rose from the dead;he ascended into heaven,and is seated at the right hand of the Father;from there he will come to judgethe living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit,the holy catholic Church,*the communion of saints,the forgiveness of sins,the resurrection of the body,and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

*The ‘catholic church’ denotes the totality of God’s people through the ages who hold firm to the classic teachings of Christ’s apostles, regardless of denomination. It affirms the unity of the church.

Bible

1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 He said:3 ‘May the day of my birth perish, and the night that said, “A boy is conceived!”4 That day – may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine on it.5 May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it.6 That night – may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months.7 May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it.8 May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.9 May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn,10 for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.11 ‘Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?12 Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?13 For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest14 with kings and rulers of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,15 with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.16 Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?17 There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest.18 Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver’s shout.19 The small and the great are there, and the slaves are freed from their owners.

This is the word of the LordThanks be to God

20 ‘Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul,21 to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure,22 who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave?23 Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?24 For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water.25 What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.26 I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.’

8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Psalm 86A prayer of David.

1 Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.2 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you; save your servant who trusts in you.You are my God; 3 have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.4 Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you.5 You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.6 Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy.7 When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.8 Among the gods there is none like you, Lord; no deeds can compare with yours.9 All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name.10 For you are great and do marvellous deeds; you alone are God.

11 Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness;

give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name for ever.

13 For great is your love towards me; you have delivered me from the depths,

from the realm of the dead.14 Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God; ruthless people are trying to kill me –

they have no regard for you.15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,

slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.16 Turn to me and have mercy on me;

show your strength on behalf of your servant;save me, because I serve you

just as my mother did.17 Give me a sign of your goodness,

that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

5 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow,will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
