MAST 2014 – 2015 “Every student will have a VOICE. Every student will be part of the HEARTBEAT.”

! What if… !Every student in our school knew that someone – a staff member – really cared about him/her? All students had educational, career and personal goals toward which they were working and could see their courses as useful in reaching these goals? All parents personally knew someone at school whom they could call – who really knew their child – and how well they were doing? All school staff had the opportunity to develop close connections and mentoring relationships with a small group of students throughout their high school years? Every student had an opportunity to have their voice heard among the student body? Students could lead small groups and participate in important decisions regarding student life and activities at their school?

These “what ifs”, if realized, could make our school a more rewarding place for everyone.

Mentor and Student Team (MAST)

Purpose: Establish an advisor/advisee relationship for all students at Chapin High School. Provide students an opportunity to actively participate in important decisions on campus; ensuring every student’s voice can be heard. Goals for Advisor/Advisee Relationship: MAST will establish an Advisor/Advisee relationship for every student at Chapin High School. Advisors will support the social, emotional, and academic growth of each advisee and sustain relationships with advisees, parents, and community. The Advisor will assist students to set goals and monitor their goal progress. Advisors will provide positive behavior interventions and support for members of their advisee group. Advisors will support the exploration of career paths for their students and ensure students are aware of the courses that would contribute to their chosen career interest. Advisors will assist students in their understanding of how to serve a positive citizen in their school and community. Goals for Student “VOICE”: MAST will encourage students to understand the concept of individuality as well as the value and responsibility of group membership. MAST will provide students the feeling of being “connected” to the student body. Students will elect a Captain and Co-Captain to represent their MAST. Students will discuss, vote and participate in school-wide decisions; utilizing their MAST leaders to represent their individual voices. Captains and Co-Captains will also lead discussions on important issues facing all students today. (cyber-bullying, digital foot prints, peer pressure, etc.)
