M a k i n g the commitment to livelife with another person isa large step. It marks thebeginning of your future together.

Planning a weddingcan be big undertaking. Many times the course of planning from the momentof engagement to thewedding day can stretchover several years. It requires patience, budgeting andorganization. A weddingbinder or filing systemcan help keep receipts andinformation all in one place. Additionally, use these steps as guidelines for your own event.1.1. Engagement party:Many couples enjoy havingan engagement party toannounce that theyre planning a life together.Engagement parties arereceptions on a smaller

scale. Its not necessary to invite all of the guestsyoud be inviting to thewedding unless you have the budget to do so. Keepit to immediate family, including grandparents, aunts and uncles and first cousins. You mayalso want to invite close friends. If finances are anissue, consider a brunch or a cocktail party with passedappetizers instead of a fullsit-down dinner.2.2. Set the date: Once youdecide youre gettingmarried, you shouldconsider when you want thebig day to occur. This candepend on what month of the year you enjoy or whenyou think you may havesaved enough to cover thecost of the wedding itself.Prime months include thespring and summer. If youwant to have your weddingrelatively soon, you may find that certain dates are

already booked up for housesof worship and receptionhalls. Choose an off-peak time of the year, such as January, March, November or December, instead.3.3. Establish a budget: Thescope of your weddingwill depend largely uponwhat you can afford. Many of todays averageweddings range from $25,000 to $35,000.Make a list of all the costsyou will have: wardrobe, clergy fees, reception hall, flowers, photography, gifts for wedding party, transportation, honeymoon, etc. Figure that the majorityof the costs will be around $2,000 each (excluding thereception site, honeymoonand ceremony). Seeing the end cost will help youdevelop a plan for saving.Keep in mind that many of the payments and depositsare made over time, so youwont have to come up with

the lump sum all at one time.4.4. Wedding sites: Once youhave a date and budget, your next step is to makearrangements with thechurch, synagogue or other place where the ceremonywill take place. Most housesof worship prefer you secure the day with them beforebooking your reception site. Many places book a year or more in advance, so it isimportant to shop aroundand secure your locationsas soon as possible. Whenlooking at receptionlocations, it helps to havea preliminary idea of howmany people youll beinviting to the weddingso you can compare costsand decide on room sizes.Certain placesoffer lower rates for Friday andS u n d a y t h a n

Saturday night. This canhelp to keep your receptionmore budget-friendly.5.5. Photography, Music,Flowers, Limos, Hairstylist:Some wedding vendorsbook up as fast as receptionsites, particularly if theycome well recommended.Secure your date for servicesw i t h t h e s e

people shortly after youreserve your ceremony andreception site. Vendors willlikely require a depositand balance paid before thewedding.6.6. Wardrobe: The ladiesin the wedding will need to browse for and decideon gowns roughly 6 to 8months before the wedding. This allows time for thedresses to be ordered andalterations to be made.Gentleman can typicallyshop for tuxedo rentals amonth before the wedding.7. 7. Registry: If you want toselect gifts from a specific

store, register for them as far in advance as possible. This way if people want to give you gifts from theregistry in advance of thewedding, theyll know what to choose. Definitely register by 2 to 3 months before thewedding, because this iswhen the bridal shower is typically held.8.8. Stationery: Order your invitations, save-the-datecards, etc. 5 to 6 monthsbefore the wedding so youhave time to check the proofs and ensure theyre

printed correctly. Weddinginvitations are usuallymailed out 1 to 2 months prior to the event. It iscustomary to stamp theRSVP card so that guestssimply put it in the mail.9. 9. Religious requirements:Some houses of worshiprequire classes or retreatsbefore a wedding ceremony to prepare the couple for marriage in a religioussense. Make sure these tasksare completed.10:10: Honeymoon: It used tobe the grooms task to book the honeymoon, but mostcouples do it together these

days. Book the honeymoonand apply for passports if necessary, several monthsin advance.11.11. Seating arrangements:This can be one of themost challenging parts of wedding planning. Once themajority of your RSVPSare in hand, youll want to think about seating. Mostreception halls will give youa seating map that you canuse to determine seating. If you are a visual person, youmay want to enlarge themap and actually cut out

the names of guests to stickand re-stick in differentareas of the room until theseating is just right. Thereare also computer programs that can help you withseating tasks.12.12. Balances due: In thelast months to weeks before the wedding, most balanceswill be due for the services. The reception hall will wanta final seating count andyou will be picking upyour gown. When paying these balances, its also agood idea to confirm withmusicians, photographersand limo companies.13.13. Rehearsal: Set a rehearsala week prior to the weddingor within a few days before. This gives everyone a trialrun. A dinner is customary following the rehearsal.14.14. The big day: Rest up thenight before and organizeall of your wardrobe, honeymoon packing and then get set for one of themost momentous days of your life.

W h i l ehousewares and kitchenelectronics still dominatewedding registries, todays tech-savvy brides-to-beare expanding their gift

options and includingmore big-ticket electronicson registries, too.

Perhaps its a trendspurred on by a greater influence from grooms- to-be with the registering process, or a reflection of the

times: women are no longer kitchen-bound and contentsimply with blenders andcoffee makers. Regardless, trends indicate thateverything from flat panel televisions, to home-theater systems to digital andvideo cameras are popular registry items.

In lieu of thisregistry evolution, here aresome tips for women ready to hit the stores and createwedding registries.

Register for whatyou need or want. Many of todays couples have livedindependently in their own

homes before tying the knot.So its likely that theyhave many home essentialsalready. Theres no pointin registering for a set of silverware if you alreadyhave one. Think about theitems that can add to your inventory or specialtyeffects that you now desire.

Think multipleregistries. You neednt limityourself to one store. Choose three favorite retailers andregister items at each. Thisgives guests plenty of items to choose from on your wishlists and provides greater flexibility to those who dontlive by a specific store or dont have online access for

Web shopping. Just be surenot to overlap items betweenstores, because then youcould end up with doubles of things. Its better to choose three distinct retailers, suchas a big-box store for linens,a housewares store for small

kitchen appliances andcooking essentials, and anelectronics center for those techy gifts youd love tohave.

Register as acouple. It certainly mayseem more time-efficient if you go out on your own toregister, but involving your spouse in gift selectiongives him more of a sayin the household choicesand future marriage. Asregistry protocol changeseven further, your guycan even choose items thatare specifically guy-zoneitems, such as tools and

power equipment for thegarage. This encourages abalance.

Dont get blindedby greed. Its easy to gooverboard when you have the stores registry scanner gun in your hand. But firing it at every item on the shelves is certainly not the way to go. Have a rangeof items that are pricedat a spectrum so theressomething for every guestsbudget. Consider avoiding the cheapest or smaller items - a ladle here, a meat thermometer there - because those are things you cancertainly pick up on your own.

Capturing the uniquecharacter of yourwedding day!

W hile a personswedding day is a time for celebration, as any brideand groom know, the dayitself and the monthsleading up to the big eventcan be stressful.

Such stress is oftenheightened for couplesin which each person is from a different religiousbackground. Whereas suchcouples used to be rare, studies continue to show that interfaith marriagesare on the rise. In the2001 American ReligiousIdentification Survey, nearly 25 percent of allcouples responding were ininterfaith marriages.

Interfaith couplesneed to do extra work withrespect to their weddingday, taking care of certainmatters that, for couples of the same faith, neednt bediscussed. For interfaithcouples, the following tipsshould help ease the stressof the big day.

Determine whatsmost important: Despitebeing raised in a particular faith, many adults either dont regularly attendreligious ceremonies or consider themselves as practicing a particular religion. In fact, a 2005 survey titled Atheism:Contemporary Rates andPatterns, found that39 percent of Americansconsidered themselves either agnostics (claiming no

belief or disbelief in God) or atheists (claiming disbelief in God). For interfaithcouples about to get married, its important to trulyconsider ones beliefs. Brideand groom should examinehow meaningful their faithis to them, and what theycan live with or without in awedding ceremony.

Attend a service,be it a wedding or weeklyservice, from each faith:Knowledge is a greatmediator when decidinghow to conduct an interfaithceremony. Learn as much

as possible about eachothers faith and traditions. Attending a service or ceremony might even openyour eyes to an element of your partners faith thatyou find appealing andmight want to include in the ceremony. In addition, knowing about a partners faith will help you better understand their thought process when planning theceremony.

    Consider two

ceremonies: Sometimes oneor both persons decide their faith is very importantso that they insist on a traditional ceremony being performed. This isnt all that uncommon, and canappease the families of both people getting married,as couples wont run therisk of leaving somethingimportant out of theceremony.

Planning an interfaith marriagePlanning an interfaith marriage

One of the biggestdecisions a couple has tomake when planning awedding concerns how to feed the guests. This boilsdown to two choices: a sitdown meal or a buffet styleserving. Each has their upsand downs, and which route to take typically dependson a number of factors.

Degree of formality:Formal weddings oftencall for a sit-down meal,as its generally viewedas more elegant. But thisdoesnt exclude the buffet-style option from formalweddings. At more laidback, but still formal, weddings a buffet-stylemeal is perfectly acceptable.

The guest list: Theglobal nature of the world today means friends and family are spread out more than ever. The age of guestsshould be considered as wellbefore deciding on a mealoption. If there will be lots of elderly people or even guestswith young children, its

probably easier on them to offer a sit down meal. For weddings that boast a particularly young guestlist, a buffet style mightencourage more minglingand allow those guests to meet one another a loteasier than a sit down mealwould.

Budget: Buffet-style meals are generallyless expensive, but thisisnt always the case. Some think a sit-down mealwill cost more because await staff is required toserve the food and drinks. Flexibility: Guest listsare often unique, with eachguest having particular preferences when it comes to food. This makes buffets anespecially attractive option.Sit down meals can be verylimiting, which wont bodewell for picky eaters. Abuffet, however, offers manyselections, and chances areeven the pickiest of eaterswill find something theycan devour.
