Mercator, Gerard. The 'Mercator Atlas of Europe' was acquired in March 1997 from the Railways Pension Fund, thanks to a large grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The atlas contains the only surviving example of Mercator's wall map of Europe (1554), one of only four surviving examples of his wall map of the British Isles (1564) and two sections of the 1569 world map. Two manuscript maps of northern Italy are believed to be in his hand. Besides those, there are 30 maps from an early edition of Ortelius, and an unsigned map of Ancona. The atlas may well have been put together in 1570-1572 by Mercator for Werner von

Gymnich, who was then planning a European tour with his pupil the young Hereditary Prince Friedrich Karl of Cleves. Found in a Belgian bookshop in 1967, the volume was sold to the British Rail Pension Fund at

Sotheby's in 1979 and put up for sale again (unsuccess- fully) by Sotheby's on 26 November 1996. All the Mercator maps are reproduced in colour in Marcel Watelet (ed.), The Mercator Atlas of Europe (Walking Tree Press, 1998).

Jefferys, c.1750. (The screen comprises an 8-sheet map of the world, surrounded by 20 circular maps (in rectangular frames), together filling precisely a four-fold screen, 180 X 256 cm. In effect, this is a flattened out world atlas, aimed at an educated English audience, with separate maps of the environs of London, Cam-

bridge and Oxford, the parts of the British Isles, the countries of Europe and the heavens. It was first advertised by George Willdey in 1721, and Jefferys was still offering it in the 1760s. Coincidentally, the only other example that could be traced was also sold in
