    7/28-29 2010 Bolder Giving/Chronicle Calls

Thanks for inviting me to be on the chat. I love being a part of Bolder Giving and helpingspread the word about how to live and give up to our full potential.

    1.

How much is enough? How do we choose to live on the edge?

I think thats a very individual choice. For our family we have the gift of free housing andmost utilities so the money we wouldve paid for housing is available for other uses. Icant imagine wed need more things! So we invest it in what we care about creating amore just society.

I think it also has to do with eliminating fear and anxiety about the future. We cantprotect ourselves with money from all that we fear so why not give it away to do goodin the present?

We live on the edge because we can if you know youll never be homeless, or withouthealth care - theres a real sense of security. What do we have to fear that money couldfix? Also since we both work in the nonprofit sector we dont want to get too farremoved from people who use the sector for services. Its too easy to start feeling like wehave the answers to problems because we give money. We dont ever want to be distantfrom human need, so we choose to live closer to the poverty line. Ive learned a lot aboutgenerosity from people who have very little money or security. When youve shared acup of coffee with someone who is living in a week-to-week rental motel room youreally experience personal generosity.

For me, money is a tool, but its not the only tool we have in our human toolkit, either. You dont use a hammer for every repair sometimes you need a screwdriver and somehelping hands. Its the same way with money. Its just one way to do something, but Idont divorce it from engagement in agencies I care about or being informed aboutgiving, either.

    2. What do we give to? Why do we give?

We compiled a list the other day to prepare for this chat and its a very long list! We givein a big variety of categories: disaster relief, basic human needs like food and housing(locally & nationally), reproductive health and advocacy, social justice, human rights,LGBT issues, political causes and candidates, all the giving options through the UnitedMethodist Church, community foundations, investigative journalism, public tv and radio, and of course our minimum 10% giving to church. Thats the basis from which all ourother gifts originate. We start with 10% and then use the next 20-50% of our wages forother giving. We give in easy ways - cash & in-kind. We make recurring gifts, annualgifts and planned gifts. I particularly enjoyed being part of a womens giving circle, too.

Why? Its intrinsic to who we are. We live by the motto all we have is gift, all we do isoffering so giving isnt an option. We also give because we can and because we know

    2/21

that the private sector and public sector cant meet all the needs alone. We need a strongindependent sector that requires investment and involvement, too. We give to agencieswere involved with and get involved with agencies we give to. Having worked in thesector all these years its become a part of my life. Some of my most generous givinghas been to the agencies Ive led. Personal integrity is important and living by my

values and beliefs means that I live a life of integrity.

Its funny, in my work Im fierce about how money is used since its not mine, or eventhe agencys. Its entrusted to whatever agency Im leading by the donors and funders.Im all about accountability and donor wishes when Im on-the-job. But as an individualgiver, I dont operate that way. I do due diligence and read 990s and financial statements(I actually like to read financials thank you, Guidestar.org!), but once I give a gift, Idont care how its used. The agency knows the issue best so they know best how to usethe money, too. Ive given to individuals whove asked without wondering what theylldo with it. Nobody asks me what Im going to do with my paycheck and whether theoutcome is measurable!

My daughter is just starting out post-college and even though she doesnt have steadyemployment yet, she gives recurring monthly gifts to her college and it turns out shesone of the biggest givers. Im proud that she is able to defend her generosity from aposition of personal integrity. It makes me feel so good about the decisions weve madeto live our lives as fully generous people.

My grandparents were part of the 1937 Flint sit-down strike and I think collective actionand generosity is part of my personal DNA, too. My parents were both public schoolteachers and I know how much they gave out of their own pockets for their work. Itwasnt a big deal, just something they chose to do because they cared.

    3. Role of faith

I was raised in the United Methodist church and learned early about the teachings of thefounder, John Wesley. He started Sunday Schools to teach miners and their children howto read and write a very practical man who saw the churchs role as being in the world, not separated from it and who believed that were expected to do all the good youcan in all the ways you can with all the people you can for as long as you can.We try to live by the social principles of the church, too. You can learn more here:http://archives.umc.org/interior.asp?mid=1686

I also think that being a childrens Sunday School teacher myself for the past 36 years hasmade it easy for me to live more generously. Did you know that Jesus taught more aboutmoney than any other subject? If youd been a Sunday School teacher as long as I haveyou would! I cant ignore those teachings in my own life and be a Christian.

Its not just about giving money, though, its also about how we use money in otherways. We avoid products that harm the environment, we buy products made ethically andwithout sweatshop labor (that means we need to be aware and informed), we invest our

    3/21

retirement in socially-responsible vehicles, we drive a hybrid car, we share our homewith others, we buy most of our clothing and household goods from Goodwill or othernonprofit resale shops, and we support local and independent stores and services.

    Other:

For you development staff on the chat were the folks that fly under the radar, so wedont fit the usual prospecting assumptions. The most important thing just thank us.Send an acknowledgement after each gift. A small gift might represent a significantproportion of someones income or assets were not the one-time big gift givers, but wegive a lot over time. We added up our gifts over the past 17 years and it rangessomewhere between $332,400 and $520,000. Thats a lot of money by mostmeasurements but even more when you realize that weve never made more than$112,000 a year in any given year. Some years our income was less than $40,000, but wealways give. And another piece of advice dont underestimate our potential for major

gifts. Thereve been times Ive been part of fundraising activities and the developmentstaff didnt ask me for a gift, probably thinking that because I work for a nonprofit, Iwouldnt have much to give. I felt really hurt by that. I was there because I wanted togive.

wealth for social impact." We believe one of the biggest challenges toaccomplishing that mission is the lack of conversations (both peer to peer

and cross-generationally) that focus on the "Why and How" to give more

    and make a social impact.

and a Masters in Finance, I have lived in cultures that provide me with a

member of my community with an amazing career in Wealth

Management spanning 22 years. I have done well and now I am able to

recognize that the essence of life is really a circle and we all, at the end of

the day must give back all that is borrowed from the universe. A

balanced life is the essence of happiness. As such, I am dedicated to

helping my community. I teach FinancialP

lanning related courseswithin my community and contribute toward the betterment of women

in emerging economies such as India. I began my financial services

career as a Financial Advisor in 1988 in San Francisco as a college

Intern. For over 22 years, I worked with Morgan Stanley as a Financial

Advisor. By combining my knowledge and experience with diverse Wall

Street firms, cultures and my desire to help people live more

meaningfully, I have realized my personal and professional goals. Being

an Indian woman in a successful career and as an American I now

recognize more closely the disadvantages faced by women and children

across the world. I have been afforded opportunities in life by working

hard, and now, the ability to give back is occupying my thoughts anddeeds. Many of my clients are Philanthropists and I have contributed in

the past by helping them. I have learnt a great deal in doing so. I have

taught kids in poor villages in emerging countries basic hygiene and am

now in the process of establishing Reading Rooms and libraries in India

and hopefully Haiti. My most prized assets remain my toddlers, Jack and

    Anjali, and my husband Jon.

management expertise. I found this call interesting because most

fundraising organizations are focused and driven by contributions from

major donors. However as the pool of major contributors is shrinking

non-profit organizations need to turn to other target populations for

significant contributions or at least cultivate and educate traditionally

non-philanthropic focused individuals on how they too can be

    philanthropists.
