Talk about calling long distance. Mt. Juliet High junior Shelley Choudhury will be among several Tennessee students questioning NASA shuttle pilot Barry “Butch” Wilmore during a phone up-link scheduled Sunday, Nov. 22. Capt. Wilmore, himself a 1981 graduate of Mt. Juliet High, and the rest of crew of Atlantis, blasted

into space Monday afternoon from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center -- marking the beginning of the end of the space shuttle program. Atlantis will deliver some 15 tons of equipment to the International Space Station and return one of its crew members to Earth during an 11-day mission. The space craft is expected to dock with the ISS sometime today (Wednesday). Choudhury won the

chance through a question contest with Wilmore’s alma mater -- Tennessee Tech. Choudhury says she is looking forward to speaking with Wilmore while he orbits in space. Her question, “If your communication devices failed in space what would you do about that – cause that’s going to be a major issue.” “All I will be thinking about is, ‘I never thought I would be here asking an

astronaut a question while they’re in space!’ You never would dream of that and it’s so cool that I get the opportunity,” she said. Capt. Wilmore, 46, invited several of his old high school coaches to watch the lift-off in Florida. A former linebacker for the Golden Bears, Wilmore took a Mt. Juliet High School jersey to space. When his mission is complete, the jersey will be displayed at the school. The six crew members were busy Tuesday surveying the shuttle’s thermal protection system, checking out spacesuits

and grappling the Express Logistics Carrier 1. The crew was also scheduled to install the centerline camera, extend the Orbiter Docking System ring and checkout rendezvous tools in preparation for docking to the ISS today. On Monday, Wilmore, Commander Charles O. Hobaugh and Mission Specialists Leland Melvin and Randy Bresnik used the 50-foot-long shuttle robotic arm and its 50-foot-long orbiter boom sensor system to get an up close look at the tiles of Atlantis’ wing leading edges and nose cap.

Wilson County Commissioners were at odds with one another on a number of issues and ended up making decisions that did not exactly show support for their constituents. Monday night’s meeting began with District 22 Commissioner Heather Scott of Mt. Juliet moving two resolutions to right after the reading of the minutes because she had to leave during the meeting. Those resolutions dealt with removing the Road Committee Chairman’s salary and another about holding the funding of the construction on the county’s portion of Curd Road. The most important issue of the evening was the latter of the two, which Scott wanted to amend to say that the funding should be reconsidered after the old Mt. Juliet Elementary property on Mt. Juliet Road had sold and closed. The original wording said for the Budget Committee to reconsider the issue in 120 days if the resolution to fund it with capital outlay notes failed. District 15 Commissioner Mike Justice and several others said that they would not vote for the use of capital outlay notes, but urged that the county should pay for its portion. The county has entered into a contract with Odell Binkley to buy the property for $3.4 million and he has 120 days to pay that money. He has the option of asking for up to two 30-day periods of extra time, but he would be forced to pay $25,000 of his earnest

money if he asked for them.“If you all vote to borrow this money (with capital outlay notes), I’m going to move that we borrow $40 million to build a new school,” said District 20 Commissioner Annette Stafford. Scott’s amendment did not pass, but the original version of the resolution was accepted. District 21 Commissioner Eugene Murray said that the people of Mt. Juliet did not necessarily need the money immediately, but they did need to see that this body supports them. The other resolution, which came fi rst, was a change of the Special Acts of 1961 that gave the Road Commission chairman a monthly salary of three times a commissioner’s per diem, which according to District 2 Commissioner Chris Sorey, was $5 a month, making the chairman’s salary $15 a month. “In 1961, the County Commission, which was called the Quarterly County Court, only met four times a year and the Road Committee met every month,” Sorey said. “If you account for infl ation of $15 from 1961, it would translate into $108 today, but since the chairman got a raise every time the commissioners got a raise, he makes $1,200 a month today.” Sorey added that this is nothing personal toward Mayor Robert Dedman, who is the Road Commission chairman, because this resolution would not take effect until Sept. 1, 2010, when the county would have a new mayor. He also said that the three candidates running for county mayor agreed with his resolution. “This is just about

adjusting something that is inappropriate at this time,” Sorey said.“ You’ve got to remember whose money it is that you are spending,” said District 19 Commissioner L.T. Jenkins. “Do you want to pay $1,200 a month for someone to preside over a meeting? Come on!”

The vote was one vote shy of the 17 votes needed for a two-thirds majority but Murray said he was confused by the vote. Sorey moved to have the vote reconsidered and it was; however, it still failed by a wider margin than the previous time. The meeting then continued with committee reports

and then the voting on the remaining resolutions. The resolution to fund the county’s portion of the Curd Road construction with capital outlay notes was deferred to the March meeting. The other resolutions passed with little discussion.

Local Opinions

To the Editor: I want to commend all of the city employees involved in the creation of Mount Juliet’s fi rst disc golf course at Mundy Park. I have long advocated for such a course to be created here, but these folks went out and got it done! I have played disc golf for some years and took advantage of the weather this weekend to check out the new course. This is an easy course for the experienced disc golfer and that is a big plus for novices, seniors, and those who want to get their kids in on the fun. Disc golf is an inexpensive sport that offers anyone an opportunity to compete with friends, bring their kids along or take in a round on their own. Playing by myself I was able to complete the nine-hole course in about half an hour while getting in some needed excercise. Our local sporting goods store has everything you need for a round of disc golf. This course can be a ‘one club’ course for those on a budget. I recommend a mid-range ‘driver’ like the Innova ‘Shark’. Kids should look for ‘clubs’ at

or under 150 grams or just use the larger fl ying discs they are used to. Disc golf has long been established as a professional sport and everything from long range ‘drivers’ to ‘putters’ are available for the enthusiast who wants to branch out to other area courses. For more information about the sport, check out www.pgda.com . Mundy Park has historically been sadly underutilized and has long been criticized for the level of expense it has created versus its level of use by residents of Mount Juliet. Indeed, when I was there to play a round of disc golf on Sunday, there was a small group from outside of WIlson County on the soccer fi eld, me, and a group ahead of me playing the new disc golf course. This course is good news for our residents and for Mundy Park. There is still work to be done- I never found the fi rst ‘tee’ and course markers are needed- but I urge everyone to check out this great new addition to the recreational opportunities in Mount Juliet. New home construction permits hits all time high in years in MJBy Tomi L. WileyManaging Editor

Proving that Mt. Juliet can still buck the trend of spiraling new home construction that has plagued the rest of the country, a new record for new single family residential permits issued hit a new high for the month of October, City offi cials said Monday. Mt. Juliet Public Works Director Marlin Keel

said there were 33 new

single family residential permits issued in October of this year, compared to 21 in the same month of 2006, 26 in 2007, and 18 in 2008. He said most of the permits were pulled in Del Webb and Phase D (Shadow Creek Townhomes; 12 permits) in Providence. The few remaining were at various locations across the City. All the permits were for single family residents. Twelve of the permits were for townhomes in Shadow Creek, Phase D of Providence. “We do not have the specifi c information as to why so many permits were issued in October,” Keel responded via email. “It could be a combination of several reasons: We like to think that Mt. Juliet remains a preferred residential destination due to the quality of life issues that the Community offers;

the stimulus package tax incentive could be a factor; could be that builders’ inventory of new homes is decreasing and builders desire to provide additional inventory.” City Manager Randy Robertson agreed that the tax credit for new home buyers could defi nitely be a factor. “October would be the last point in time to start building and be done by the end of the year,” he noted. “The signifi cant

number of single family residential home permits for the month of October is good news for the City,” Keel agreed. “You can read a lot into the signifi cance of the 33 residential permits, what could be a single month spike. I would prefer to wait and see what happens in November, December, and future months to see if a consistent trend is established. I do not want to speculate as to the specifi c reasons other than it does say that Mt. Juliet remains a preferred destination for new residents and that builders remain confi dent that their products will sell in Mt. Juliet. “The October permit numbers do exceed our FY10 budget anticipations, which is good news. I hope that the trend continues throughout the remainder of this fi scal year and into years to come.”

A tax incentive for fi rst time home buyers could be a factor in why this October there were more new construction permits pulled than in the past several years.

Mt. Juliet will welcome another grocery store, this one with a bit of a cult following, in the fi rst quarter of next year when Aldi opens its doors on N. Mt. Juliet Road. According to local Aldi Director of Real Estate Jesse Anesi, the discount grocery store is slated to open in April 2010, weather permitting. The sign is already up and construction underway on the lot across from the Paddocks development housing Lowe’s and Wal-Mart on S. Mt. Juliet Road. “I am so excited about having an Aldi in Mt. Juliet,” exclaimed local

resident Bella Farchesi. “I’ve been driving to Hermitage – or sometimes to Lebanon, if I’m in the area – but I’d much rather keep the money in our community.” Anesi said the new grocery will have the same brands and products as other area Aldis but will have a “totally different building.” “It will have the same merchandise and prices but with more windows, higher ceilings, a more open-air environment,” Anesi said. “More display room, more room in general. But the products will be the same.” Anesi added that schematics for the new building are not available at this time, and while he wasn’t certain, he thought the new store will open up six to eight jobs.

In the past several weeks the Mt. Juliet Police Department has seen a growing trend in the number of false police reports fi led. Since October 1st several arrests have been made and several more are being presented to the Wilson County Grand Jury. The Criminal Investigations Division has been told by the offenders that the reports

are being fi led as a result of the current economic times. During one recent investigation a subject reported that he had been robbed at the Mt. Juliet League Ballpark. His story just did not seem valid to the detectives working the case and after a lengthy interview the offender did admit that the report was false. The subject stated that he owed money and was hoping to buy himself more time in paying a loan with a report from the Police Department. The subject was charged in Wilson County and is currently on probation. The other reason for false reports is the misuse of prescription drugs. In the past several weeks the Mt. Juliet Police Department has seen an increase in the number of citizens calling to report that their prescription medication has been stolen, lost, and in some cases fl ushed down the toilet. The Police Department is fi nding that as a result of the tough economic times people who would never think about selling or misusing prescription drugs are now selling prescription drugs to keep the lights on or food in

the refrigerator. Lt. Detective Gwin King, Supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Division, wants to warn those involved in fi ling false police reports that they will be charged with a class E Felony which can carry up to 6 years in prison and a fi ne up to $3,000.00. Those who falsely report that medication has been stolen and are currently receiving benefi ts from TennCare will have the report forwarded and charged by the Inspector General’s offi ce and could be charged with defrauding the government which would result in more time in jail if convicted and loss of that benefi t. Chief Andy Garrett warns that those who continue to fi le false police reports will be charged and prosecuted to fullest extent of the law. The chief further states that the increase, in these false reports have put a strain on the Police Department and the judicial system as a whole. Anyone that fi les a false police report with the Mt. Juliet Police Department will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

An investor group led by Kieran Burke and Gary Story, industry veterans who built the world’s largest regional theme park company from a single Oklahoma City amusement park, has purchased Nashville Shores Water Park and Marina. Burke, formerly Chairman and Chief Executive Offi cer of Six Flags, Inc. (and its predecessor companies), and Story, formerly President and Chief Operating Offi cer of Six Flags, have formed Nashville Shores Holdings, LLC and acquired Nashville Shores. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The new company owns and will operate Nashville Shores, which consists of a water park, marina and boat rental operation located on 385 acres of land and water ten miles east of downtown Nashville on the banks of J. Percy Priest Lake. Nashville Shores fi rst operating season was in 1998. “Gary and I have been looking for special opportunities on which we could work together again,” said Burke, President of Nashville Shores Holdings, LLC. “Nashville Shores presents a rare opportunity to develop an existing facility into a fi rst rate water park, marina and campground close to the heart of a top U.S city. “And, the growing and diverse Nashville market helped to convince us that when we deliver a fi rst class water park in 2010, families and businesses in Middle Tennessee, as well as tourists that visit, will respond very positively.”

Expansion for 2010 Season The new owners are planning a multi-million dollar program to expand the water park as well as improve current facilities. The upgrades are slated to be in place for the start of the 2010 season. A formal announcement of the new attractions and other upgrades is scheduled for the fi rst week of December.“Nashville Shores already has many of the pieces in place to make a great water park and family resort,” said Burke. “By capitalizing on the existing assets, utilizing our park and entertainment experience, and adding some exciting improvements, we believe that we can transform this property into a regional family destination.” Mike Williams has

been one of the primary owners of Nashville Shores since its inception. Williams was looking for the right type

of buyer for the property. Burke and Story’s expertise in the industry and the means to improve the facility

were the right fi t. “I’m very proud of what we accomplished during the past decade

at Nashville Shores,” said Williams. “We provided a place where families created lifelong memories together.

Taking stuff for granted The human mind is amazing. Just think about it. Think of all the things you can do without really even thinking about it. Just try this. Raise your arms above your head, wiggle your fi ngers, stick your tongue out and hum. I want you to think of all the things you just did without much effort at all. Then I want you to realize how blessed you are to be able to do all those things with little or no effort. There are many people each and every day that are either born without the ability or lose the ability to do all the things you just did and more as a result of an injury or illness. There are many days when most of us awake in just an all around bad mood. I must admit that I do this myself. I have gone many days wining because of some of the smallest things. But all it takes for me to be put in my place is to see someone else facing far more challenges than me handling their situation with far more class, dignity, character, integrity and enthusiasm. Now that is something that can set you straight in a hurry. Life is not easy and there is always going to be someone else that will face far more challenges in life. The positive lessons we learn from them is what makes us tougher, stronger and more supportive. The older I have gotten and the more challenges and experiences I have each and every day have taught me many things, especially gratitude, humbleness and the ability to count and appreciate my many blessings. The older I get the less I fi nd myself fussing about what I do and don’t have. I personally think that is why we do so much for our children. We want the very best for them and will do without so that our children have better than what we had when we were kids. With all of this in mind, please count your blessings each and every day. Please take time to realize what we sometimes take for granted. Please love on the ones you love each and every moment and chance you get for there are no guarantees they will be here tomorrow. Please take time to talk, listen, touch and learn from those that you love and care for because there is no guarantee that you will have the ability to touch, feel, see hear, or hug those that you love tomorrow. There are 86,400 seconds in a twenty four hour period. Please enjoy as many of them as you can.
