Wow, what a month! April has been a cold month

with several car events canceled due to the cold

weather! But don’t fret, the 70+ degree weather is

here and the flowers are blooming and it’s time to

show our cars off!

We have posted all the flyer’s and registration sheets to this newsletter. Be sure to share them with your friends and family. We are looking for some additional voluntaries to help with the car show and helping out locating and contacting additional sponsors, just ask and we will get you going in the right direction! We all want to thank you for making the 2014 Car Show a fun and entertaining event. We have lots planned, so bring out those cars on September (14

th) and enjoy an Ice Cream cone with your

friends and family at the Sugar Shack! We will be changing the newsletter design in the coming months. Something which will be just a little easier to print! Did you know? Five things that will kill your classic car

Contrary to general perception, most classic cars aren’t fragile flowers. In fact, many are anvil-tough, particularly American cars of the 1950s and 1960s, built with real Pennsylvania steel and very little plastic. But even these rolling bank vaults can be seriously screwed up by these five things:

1. Non-use: This one is really is counterintuitive. When classic cars come to mind for many, the image of the trailer queen or museum piece looms large; in fact, most people think that these are the best cared-for cars. In actuality, they often turn out to be the most problematic cars when they are finally driven. Non-use is actually abuse — seals dry out and start to leak; gas gets stale and turns to varnish; batteries corrode when not removed; and tires get flat spots. Cars that are used and maintained on a regular basis, on the other hand, are often the happiest and most reliable old cars.

2. Improper storage/rodents: This goes along with the above. Failure to drain fuel or use a stabilizer, not using jack stands, and making certain that anti-freeze is up to snuff all contribute to storage-related deterioration. But perhaps the most destructive force has four teeth and a naked tail — rats and mice, the same rodents that wiped out half the population of Europe by carrying Bubonic plague, can really mess with your classic car. They chew upholstery and insulation to make nests (in which they pee, poop and reproduce, not necessarily in that order), and worst of all, they chew on wiring harnesses where it isn’t apparent until something smokes or catches fire from behind the dash of your 1965 Mustang.

Did you know? Five things that will kill your classic car

1. Road Salt: Most everyone who has taken chemistry knows that the reaction between sodium chloride and steel yields iron oxide, more commonly known as rust. But few people truly realize how quickly the damage is done. Just one drive on a wet salty road will give your classic an ugly coating of surface rust on anything on the underside that is not well protected, like suspension parts, exhaust and even the frame. A season or two that lets salty mud penetrate the nooks and crannies of your car will almost certainly cause visible rust to erupt. And don’t think you’re immune because your car is fiberglass, there’s plenty of steel to rot away under the pretty plastic panels of your 1972 Corvette Stingray. Conversely, getting caught in the rain every now and then isn’t death for your classic, as long as nothing like carpets or trunk mats get soaked and stay wet. Some of the cleanest and most rust-free old cars we’ve seen come from the damp Pacific Northwest, where it snows little and road salt isn’t used.

2. Old Tires: Most vintage cars don’t see 15,000 miles of use each year and, often, totally unsafe tires can look deceptively sound. In addition to tread wear, age, dry rot, flat spots and UV exposure can render tires unsafe. About six or seven years should be tops in terms of tire life, regardless of how the tires may look. A blowout or a thrown tread can not only threaten your life, it can severely damage your car severely as I found out first hand when an otherwise fine-looking tire threw a tread and put a football-sized dent in the lower quarter panel of a formerly pristine 1977 Datsun 280Z.

3. Bad driving habits: The list of things that you can do to shorten the life of the major systems of a classic — from engine, transmission to differential — is long and beyond the scope of this article. But perhaps the most destructive thing you can do to a vintage car is to not let it warm up properly. I’ve witnessed tons of people who should know better start up a cold car and immediately zing it to the redline with the first shift. It’s painful to watch and even more painful to realize the harm that’s being done to the engine. Always drive gently until the car has reached normal operating temperature (usually around the mid-point of the temperature gauge).

Ford is marking the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang with a special version of America’s original pony car. The 2015 Mustang 50 year Limited Edition is a Mustang GT fastback that’s been dressed up with several retro cues. Among them are an extra helping of chrome exterior trim, unique grille with mustang in a corral logo, and rear quarter windows designed to look like they’re covered with louvers. Each car will is equipped with an upgraded performance package and powered by a 5.0-liter V8 with “at least” 420 hp. The only options are a choice of manual or automatic transmissions and Wimbledon White or Kona Blue paint.

to party! Inside, the aluminum trim gets an axel-spin finish, two-tone seats are upholstered in cashmere and black-colored leather, while cashmere stitching is featured throughout. Only 1,964 of the cars will be built, a reference to the Mustang’s unveiling on April 17th, 1964, with the earliest cars produced often referred to as 1964 ½ models. No word yet on pricing, but the special edition cars will be among the first built when the all-new 2015 Mustang goes on sale this fall.

Waxing your car is one of the best things you can do to protect the paint and finish. But did you know there are certain days that you should not wax your car? Taking a few precautions and steps prior to applying wax to your car can help extend the life of the wax and make your car's surface shine.

1. 2. Before Waxing

o The first step to waxing a car is actually washing it. Wash, rinse and dry the car to clean the surface of any dirt or debris. Park the car in the shade or out of direct sunlight. The best time to wax a car is when the temperature is between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too hot the wax won't dry properly. If the temperature is too cool the wax becomes too hard to apply and spread evenly.

After drying the car, use a clay bar and lubricant on the surface to remove all small particles or embedded metal or other contaminants. You won't be able to feel these things in the surface, but if left on the car they can eventually cause rust damage. Work in small areas, spraying the lubricant and rubbing back and forth with the clay bar. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and then move to another section. Repeat this until the entire car has been rubbed with the clay bar.

Apply a lightly abrasive car polish with a dual action orbital polisher. Work the polisher back and forth and in small circular motions until the polish has been applied and worked into the car completely. The car should be clean and very shiny at this point.

3. Applying the Wax

o Use a clean, damp sponge to apply a thin coat of pure carnuba wax. Pure carnuba wax is the best possible wax to put on your car. Use a thin coat, or even two thin coats, rather than one thick coat. A thick coat won't dry properly and will build up on the surface.

Apply the wax by hand, working in small sections at a time. Apply the wax and work your way down the side of the car. Only let the wax stand for five minutes or less and then wipe it off with a clean, dry cotton cloth. You may not get the entire car done at one time. Work on one side at a time, applying the wax and then wiping it off before moving to another side. Once the car is completely waxed you should not need to wax it again for another few months.
